Exploring The Effect Of Item Parceling Strategies And Number Of Items Per Parcel On Measurement Invariance Testing In Confirmatory Factor Analysis, Chunhua Cao, Xinya Liang Jan 2025

Exploring The Effect Of Item Parceling Strategies And Number Of Items Per Parcel On Measurement Invariance Testing In Confirmatory Factor Analysis, Chunhua Cao, Xinya Liang

Psychological Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Item parceling is common in structural equation modeling used in psychology, especially when the research interest is in the structural relationship between latent factors, but research on its performance in measurement invariance testing is scarce. This study examined the sensitivity of fit measures (LRT, RMSEA, CFI, AIC, BIC, and SaBIC) to measurement noninvariance with different numbers of items per parcel and parceling strategies using a simulation study. The design factors included the location of measurement noninvariance, the magnitude of measurement noninvariance, the proportion of items with measurement noninvariance, sample size, number of items per parcel, and parceling strategies. Results suggested …

The Role Of Parental Self-Efficacy During The Preschool Years: Links To Parenting Behaviors And Parent-Child Relationship Quality In Dual-Risk Families, Catalina M. Borges Jan 2025

The Role Of Parental Self-Efficacy During The Preschool Years: Links To Parenting Behaviors And Parent-Child Relationship Quality In Dual-Risk Families, Catalina M. Borges

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Parental self-efficacy (PSE) has been shown to play a critical role in shaping parenting behaviors and parent-child interactions. Examining whether domain-specific PSE like parental self-efficacy helping the child succeed in school (PSEHCSS), influences broad parenting behaviors and parent-child relationships is especially important for families experiencing elevated stress. This secondary analysis explored whether PSEHCSS predicted parenting behaviors and parent-child relationship quality over the preschool years in dual-risk families (i.e., low socioeconomic status and a child with developmental concerns). It was hypothesized that higher PSEHCSS would predict more positive and fewer negative parenting behaviors, and greater parent-child relationship quality; parenting behaviors would …

Forks And Knives And Shower Times: Pro-Environmental Spillover After Emotion Appeals, Shaquille D. Rainge

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As concerns for climate change continue, pro-environmental behaviors (PEBs) need to be adopted to help combat the rapid changes occurring. The purpose of this field study was to test whether manipulating the reason for performance of an initial behavior (PEB1) can induce positive versus negative spillover to a secondary PEB (PEB2) and to investigate how long the effects of spillover last. The present study had three experimental conditions: baseline condition (no poster), a guilt-inducing poster encouraging selection of a vegan meal (PEB1), and a neutral emotion poster encouraging PEB1. After participating in PEB1 (or not), participants were asked if they …

Severe Aggression Among Zoo-Housed Coconut (Trichoglossus Haematodus) And Rainbow (Trichoglossus Moluccanus) Lorikeets: Wellbeing Considerations For Free-Flight Aviaries, Emily Simkins Jan 2025

Severe Aggression Among Zoo-Housed Coconut (Trichoglossus Haematodus) And Rainbow (Trichoglossus Moluccanus) Lorikeets: Wellbeing Considerations For Free-Flight Aviaries, Emily Simkins

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As conservation and education institutions, modern zoos balance the needs of animals with the interests of visitors through several strategies which can increase animal wellbeing and improve visitor experience. Environmental enrichment is frequently employed to increase the suitability of anthropogenic environments for zoo-housed animals, such as through walkthrough habitats and free-flight aviaries. While habitats such as these are important for visitor experience and can be enriching to animals, there are also wellbeing considerations for these spaces. Walkthrough habitats can be a potential source of fear and stress for animals, as shown by increased frequencies of vigilance, undesirable behavior, and aggression. …

Diversity Makes Me Uncomfortable: Effects Of Diversity Language On University Student Belonging, Ziena Baker Jan 2025

Diversity Makes Me Uncomfortable: Effects Of Diversity Language On University Student Belonging, Ziena Baker

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Diversity statements and experiences form the first impressions students have of their prospective universities and employers, setting the stage for perceived feelings of belonging, otherness, and comfort within new environments (Baleria, 2021; O’Keeffe, 2013; Starck et al., 2021). Diversity statements can signal feelings of comfort and belonging or feelings of stress depending on the way in which diversity is framed (Chaney, 2022; Trawalter et al., 2016). This is especially true for students, who are more often affected mentally and physically by changes in university diversity perspectives (Sladek et al., 2021) The current study thus uses a novel blood pressure measure …

Comparison Of Cnn And Lstm Networks On Human Intention Prediction In Physical Human-Robot Interactions, Khosro Ghorbani Zadeh, Niloofar Zendehdel, George L. Holmes, Keyri Moreno Bonnett, Amy Costa, Devin Michael Burns, Ming-Chuan Leu, Yun Seong Song

Psychological Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Advancements in robotics and AI have increased the demand for interactive robots in healthcare and assistive applications. However, ensuring safe and effective physical human-robot interactions (pHRIs) remains challenging due to the sophistication of human motor communication and intent recognition. Traditional physics-based models struggle to capture the dynamic nature of human force interactions, limiting robot adaptability. To address these limitations, neural networks (NNs) have been explored for force-movement intention prediction. While multi-layer perceptron (MLP) networks show potential, they struggle with temporal dependencies and generalization. Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks effectively model sequential dependencies, while Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) enhance spatial feature …

Balance Assistance Without Mechanical Support Using A Virtual Cane With Haptic Feedback, Sindhu Reddy Alluri, Sambad Regmi, Fazlur Rashid, Devin Michael Burns, Yun Seong Song

Psychological Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Light Touch (LT) has been known to improve standing balance without mechanical support by providing sensory information about the movement of the body. Inspired by this, this work developed a Virtual Cane (VC) which gives no physical support but provides other sensory information that a physical cane would. The VC is developed with a distance sensor and vibration actuators to provide cane tip-to-ground distance information to the user. The extent to which this haptic feedback improves standing balance was assessed in a human experiment. 10 healthy young participants underwent a standing balance experiment with tandem stance and eyes closed, using …

(In)Attention To Attractive Brand Alternatives, Danielle J. Brick, Veronica L. Thomas Jan 2025

(In)Attention To Attractive Brand Alternatives, Danielle J. Brick, Veronica L. Thomas

Marketing Faculty Publications

Understanding how consumers maintain their brand relationships has important implications for marketers as committed consumers contribute significant value to firms. In the present research, we propose and test one such way consumers protect their brand relationships, namely through attentional avoidance of attractive alternative partners. Across multiple studies, we find support for our theory that committed consumers avoid attending to alternative brand partners by recalling less about and spending less time focused on attractive alternatives. We further find that this inattention occurs because consumers view the competing brand as a threat to the consumer’s current relationship. In addition, we investigate a …

Psychophysiological Responses To An Objectified Environment In College-Aged Females, Urska Dobersek, Richard A. Bennett, Sarah E. Siebers, Laurel A. Standiford Reyes

Midwest Social Sciences Journal

Objectification and its associated negative psychological consequences of self-objectification are well-established. Specifically, internalization of an observer’s perspective can lead to habitual body monitoring, negative psychological consequences, and mental health risks. Nevertheless, comparatively few studies examined physiological responses to an objectified environment. To remedy this gap, we explored the effects of an objectified environment on stress levels assessed via salivary cortisol in a single-blind experimental study of 34 undergraduate female students (Mage = 18.62, SD = 0.74). State self-objectification was manipulated by participants wearing tight, revealing exercise clothing (experimental condition; n =16) or baggy exercise attire (control condition; …

Lgbtqia+ Hate Crimes And State Non-Discrimination Policies: An Analysis, Jillian Jones Jan 2025

Lgbtqia+ Hate Crimes And State Non-Discrimination Policies: An Analysis, Jillian Jones

Midwest Social Sciences Journal

While LGBTQIA+ rights have been increasing in the United States for decades, many states do not have non-discrimination policies that protect individuals based on their gender identity and sexual orientation. This lack in protection leaves many LGBTQIA+ individuals vulnerable to experiencing discrimination and harassment, which could lead to hate crimes, cultivating an environment of passive tolerance rather than active resistance. Active resistance can be achieved through the passage of non-discrimination policies, as well as addressing minority stress that LGBTQIA+ individuals can be susceptible to when they are actively experiencing or anticipating discrimination and harassment. This research paper addresses whether the …

The Relationship Between The Facets Of Extraversion And Exercise Habits, Mckenna Prouty, Izzy Melendez, Garrett Handelman, Will Feinberg

SPARK Symposium Presentations

The majority of adults in the US do not meet recommended levels of physical activity (Wilson & Dishman 2014). Research suggests that there could be a link between these low levels of physical activity and poorer mental health. (Davis, et al 2021). Previous research has suggested that personality traits like extraversion, neuroticism, and (as defined by the Big Five Personality Traits) can have a moderating effect on the relationship of physical activity enjoyment and habit. The current study seeks to observe the relationship between the extraversion personality trait and exercise habits. Participants consisted of Belmont University students enrolled in Scientific …

Fortifying Nuclear Security: Cultivating Vigilance Culture Among Personnel For Enhanced Prevention And Response, Sabariah Kader Ibrahim, Sonia Naz

International Journal of Nuclear Security

A vigorous nuclear security culture is crucial in preventing the theft and sabotage of nuclear material. It requires vigilance from all employees because relying solely on closed-circuit television systems and security personnel is insufficient to deter potential threats. Employee attentiveness plays a vital role in recognizing and preventing suspicious activities. However, achieving a strong security culture is challenging because of the lack of incidents in some facilities, leading to employee complacency.

This paper highlights the pivotal role of personnel in the success of nuclear security measures, emphasizing the need for a proactive and vigilant mindset among staff. Through the analysis …

Enhancing Nuclear And Radiological Security In Polarized Times: Safeguarding Against Extremist Insider Threats, Jessica Baweja, Madelyn Dunning, Keithan Rogers

International Journal of Nuclear Security

Domestic violent extremism has been on the rise in recent years, fueled by growing political polarization, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the spread of misinformation online. This concerning trend raises an important question: has this increase in extremist violence manifested in more incidents involving radioactive or nuclear (RN) materials and a corresponding security concern? To explore this question, we analyzed existing data on events involving chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear materials over time. Specifically, we examined the rate of RN-related incidents, the targets of these events, and the ideologies motivating the perpetrators by using the Violent Non-State Actor Chemical, Biological, Radiological, …

Not Strong Enough? The Role Of Resilience In The Development Of Big Five Personality In Adult Survivors Of Childhood Trauma, Erica Treto

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Childhood trauma is a significant and increasing problem in the United States, with research showing that two-thirds of children have experienced at least one traumatic event before reaching the age of sixteen (SAMHSA, 2023). These events can have severe consequences in adulthood, including impacts on personality. However, there are protective factors, such as resilience, that can help mitigate the negative effects of childhood trauma. Extensive research and discussion have focused on the relationship between childhood trauma and personality, particularly in terms of mental health. However, research has been limited to investigating all Big Five personality traits and childhood traumas along …

Exploring The Connection Between Subclinical Autistic Traits And Dysfunction In The General Population, Victoria J. Carter Jan 2025

Exploring The Connection Between Subclinical Autistic Traits And Dysfunction In The General Population, Victoria J. Carter

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has been a disorder of increased interest in research and diagnostic referrals in recent years, especially within higher functioning populations. However, little is still known about subclinical presentations of ASD and subclinical autistic symptoms. Due to the lack of symptoms to meet a diagnostic level, individuals experiencing subclinical autistic symptoms often do not have access to services and are overlooked in clinical settings. It is often assumed that because an individual is not diagnosable that they are not suffering because of the same symptoms that caused them to be at a subclinical level. This study aimed …

Examining How Adverse Childhood Experiences, Resilience, And Social Support Influence Academic Satisfaction, Zoe Caldwell Jan 2025

Examining How Adverse Childhood Experiences, Resilience, And Social Support Influence Academic Satisfaction, Zoe Caldwell

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

College students face many challenges while working toward their educational goals (Meneghel et al., 2019). Although stressors may not seem significant, they are important to address as the effects accumulate over time and can have a negative impact on students' performance (Gresham & Karatekin, 2023). Without the impact of ACEs, children would be better equipped with skills that could help them continue with higher education, gain better employment, and break the cycle of trauma for any future children. Resilience can help students cope with challenges and improve their chances of graduation and academic success (Myat Zaw et al., 2022). One …

Lgbt People's Sense Of Linked Fate: Belonging And Utility, Kay Hales Jan 2025

Lgbt People's Sense Of Linked Fate: Belonging And Utility, Kay Hales

Theses and Dissertations--Political Science

This is a three study dissertation. While the LGBT community is often referred to as a monolith, research suggests that it may be separate subgroups under one umbrella. Linked fate is the sense that what happens to one member of a group will affect all other group members with consequences for political behavior. While research on racial identity groups suggests that members often feel a sense of linked fate with other group members, this research has not been generalized or explored in the LGBT community. This study empirically explores whether there is a sense of linked fate in the LGBT …
