"This chapter examines the theoretical aspects of the application of behavioral psychology (technically, the experimental analysis of behavior) to the process of behavior therapy. Beginning with a brief history, we will then discuss the definition of behavior therapy and behavior modification, survey a conception of problem behavior that grows out of the behavioral approach, examine basic approaches to behavior therapy, look at specific behavior change techniques, discuss biblical parallels, and consider several areas of controversy."

Previous research has indicated the effectiveness of rational-emotive education techniques in reducing anxiety and building self-esteem with regular classroom children. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of rational-emotive group therapy on anxiety and self-esteem of learning-disabled children. One hundred ten learning-disabled children (ages 8-13) were assigned to one of three experimental conditions: rational-emotive therapy (N=32), recreational-educational programming (N=31), or no-contact (N=47). Within the two experimental treatments that actually met, groups of seven to nine members, similar in chronological age, were formed. The rational-emotive groups received therapy based on rational-emotive theory. The recreational-educational programming groups engaged in …

This thesis examines burnout, job stress, and job satisfaction in two public health nurse organizations, located in two different regions. A total of 35 individuals were interviewed, and 31 individuals were surveyed. The major finding was the experience of burnout is a complex experiential synthesis of the constructs job satisfaction, morale, job stress, and self perception. Data suggest intraorganizational processes mediate burnout and the shift from job satisfaction to job dissatisfaction.

This is a developmental study of how young children perceive their teachers. The primary aims of the study are: 1) to provide a developmental picture of elementary school children's perceptions of their teachers, and 2) to determine the accuracy of teachers' awareness of the perceptions of the children. Instrumental to these primary aims are two subordinate objectives: 1) to construct a scale of reactions to teacher characteristic behaviors that are understandable for young children and yet meaningful to adults, and 2) to test the utility of the scale for obtaining measures of affect. The Effect Of Stress On Livestock And Meat Quality Prior To And During Slaughter, Temple Grandin

The effects of stress on cattle, pigs and sheep prior to slaughter are reviewed. Long-term preslaughter stress, such as fighting, cold weather, fasting and transit, which occurs 12 to 48 hours prior to slaughter depletes muscle glycogen, resulting in meat which has a higher pH, darker color, and is drier. Short-term acute stress, such as excitement or fighting immediately prior to slaughter, produced lactic acid from the breakdown of glycogen. This results in meat which has a lower pH, lighter color, reduced water binding capacity, and is possibly tougher. Psychological stressors, such as excitement and fighting, will often have a …

The present study tested a procedure to establish vocal mands in a 47- year-old non-verbal male with Down's syndrome and manually signed mands in a 64-year-old severely retarded female who was physically incapable of speech. In a multiple baseline design across subjects and settings, subjects were taught to complete four behavioral sequences. An establishing operation was then introduced: an item required to complete each sequence was systematically removed once as a probe for manding. Following this, relevant establishing operations were paired with imitative prompts to train manding missing items. Following mastery of a ll mands during booster training, subjects were …

Much research has been conducted on the relationships among psychometric intelligence as measured by standard IQ tests, level of cognitive maturity as defined by Piaget, and school achievement. These types of assessment have been described as measuring separate but highly correlated aspects of cognitive functioning. Little research, however, has been reported concerning the interrelationships of these three types of measures for disadvantaged children, The Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence (WPPSI), a Piagetian Battery (PB), and three subtests of the Peabody Individual Achievement Test (PIAT) were administered to 20 four year old children enrolled at a Parent-Child Center in …

A Review Of The Behavioural Mechanism Of Milk Ejection Of The Domestic Pig, David Fraser
Feeding Behavior Collection
The domestic pig has complex nursing and suckling behaviour, consisting of several distinct phases of suckling by the piglets and a characteristic pattern of grunting by the sow. A review of observations and experimental findings suggests cause-and-effect relationships between the different elements of sow and piglet behaviour, and the relationship of the behaviour to milk ejection. Characteristic features of pig nursing and suckling behaviour are interpreted as an adaptation promoting even distribution of milk among a number of precocious litter-mates.

The effects of 36 hours of sleep loss on information-processing were assessed in an absolute judgment task. Of the 24 subjects employed, 12 served in the sleep-loss (experimental) and control conditions, respectively. All subjects were tested individually for a total of ten sessions; the control group was tested on ten consecutive days, whereas the experimental subjects were tested every four hours over a 36-hour period of sleep loss, and at a recovery session following approximately 12 hours of rest and recovery. Forty-four pregnant women were examined to determine how individual differences in sex-role orientation, as assessed by the Bem Sex-Role Inventory, were related to continued sexual interest, activity, and satisfaction in pregnancy. Subjects were further examined to determine the effects of sex-role identity upon third trimester anxiety levels as assessed by the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, upon physical experience of pregnancy, upon emotional response to pregnancy, and upon labor and delivery records. Subjects were examined periodically in the third trimester of pregnancy to determine current levels of functioning as well as to acquire retrospective prepregnancy and first and second trimester data.
