The Effects Of Crowding On The Dominance Behavior Of Laboratory Rats As Assessed By Three Measures Of Dominance, Barbara C. Worthington
The Effects Of Crowding On The Dominance Behavior Of Laboratory Rats As Assessed By Three Measures Of Dominance, Barbara C. Worthington
Master's Theses
The present study was designed to assess behavioral changes in social dominance, which may accompany or be affected by short term crowding and any adrenal enlargement which may be a concomitant of crowding. To avoid methodological inaccuracy and further establish whether different measures of dominance would accrue the same results a multimethod approach suggested by Howells and Kise (1974) was employed. · Additionally sequence of test presentation was considered and both male and female subjects were used to determine if the measures differentially discriminated between the sexes.
This experiment as designed to evaluate the effects of crowding (independent variable) on …
The Effects Of Leadership Style On Group Interaction In Differing Socio-Political Subcultures, Kenneth W. Gilstein
The Effects Of Leadership Style On Group Interaction In Differing Socio-Political Subcultures, Kenneth W. Gilstein
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Four encounter groups were run using 41 undergraduates at Utah State University to measure the effects of leadership style, member vii socio-political subculture, and member personality on the quantity and quality of group interaction, and on member satisfaction. Using Kerlinger's Social Attitudes Scale, the subjects were divided into subgroupings of "conservatives" and "liberals." One conservative group and one liberal group were each conducted by a leader acting in a non-directive style, while one conservative and one liberal group were run by a leader acting in a directive style. The California Psychological Inventory was administered to the subjects to gain …
Interpersonal Attitudes Of Suicidal Individuals, Vicki Lee Nelson
Interpersonal Attitudes Of Suicidal Individuals, Vicki Lee Nelson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this study was to see how suicidal individuals in therapy as compared to nonsuicidal individuals in therapy characteristically report their relations to other people in interpersonal interactions.
One hundred and nineteen individuals were referred to the study by his or her psychotherapist associated with the participating mental health centers in the Salt Lake City and Logan, Utah, vicinities. The following measures were administered to all individuals: the FIRO-B, Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation-Behavior, two scales, Sociability and Tolerance, from the CPI, California Psychological Inventory, and a brief biographical questionnaire composed of age, sex, marital status, education, religion, and …
Perceived Feminine Role Orientation And Positive Self Concept, Jeanne Josselyn Edwards
Perceived Feminine Role Orientation And Positive Self Concept, Jeanne Josselyn Edwards
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this thesis was to explore the relationships between perceived feminine role orientation and positive self-concept, as measured by scores attained on the Inventory of Feminine Values (IFV), and the Total Positive Self Scale of the Tennessee Self Concept Scale (TSCS). Three objectives were established. First, to gather current information on women's realistic and ideal self-perceptions of their feminine roles, and determine whether these are liberal, traditional, or neutral in orientation. Second, to determine if there are significant differences in self-concept as measured by the TSCS among women who see themselves as either traditional, liberal or neutral in …

The Effects Of A Self-Directed Behavior Change On Self-Concept, Larry A. Leatham
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The effects on self-concept as a result of behavior changes made during a self-directed self-modification project were studied on 16 students at Utah State University over a period of nine weeks. Pre and post measures of self-concept administered were the Tennessee Self Concept Scale and the Well-Being Scale from the California Psychological Inventory. The research design employed was the pretest-posttest control group design. A separate analysis of covariance was run for the Total P raw score of the Tennessee Self Concept Scale and raw scores on the Well-Being Scale. The F was substantially short of the value of F needed …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The objective of this study was to develop and evaluate an alcohol education program for the inhabitants of region seven, state of Idaho. A questionnaire comprised of multiple choice, and true-false questions, plus an attitude scale was developed to measure changes by way of pre and post testings.
The five hypotheses of this study are:
- That our community and school education program would result in subjects obtaining a higher percentage of correct responses on information items on the post test administration of our questionnaire versus the pre testing.
- The community and school education program would result in subjects obtaining an …
Anxiety Correlates Of Sex Role Identity, Mary Kay Biaggio
Anxiety Correlates Of Sex Role Identity, Mary Kay Biaggio
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this study was to examine differences in anxiety levels between the sexes and between sex role identification groups (as defined by scores on a test of masculinity-femininity). Possible explanations for these differences were explored using a questionnaire made up of an openness versus closedness scale, a liberalism versus conservatism scale, and a cross-sex versus same-sex parent identification scale.
A sample of 108 females and 71 males was administered Gough's Femininity Scale, Cattell's IPAT Anxiety Scale Questionnaire, Taylor's Manifest Anxiety Scale, and a questionnaire devised for this particular study.
The sexes did not differ significantly in anxiety level …
The Abused Child And His Parents, Richard David Young
The Abused Child And His Parents, Richard David Young
IUSTITIA
Children in our society pass through a prolonged period of dependency during which they are taught the complex technological and social skills necessary for successful adult functioning. The child's experiences during this period can have profound effects on the development of his potential for meaningful interpersonal relationships, competency, and creativity. The child's dependence needs are the complement of the caretaker's nurturance. When nurturance fails or is inconsistent, societal loss merges with individual tragedy. Yet nurturance does occasionally fail. Some of those charged with the care of children abdicate their responsibilities, and do not provide the physical and/or emotional necessities for …

The Social History Delinquency Scale, Mary A. Byrne
Masters Theses
Twenty four delinquents from Coles County, Ill. and twenty four non-delinquents were given the Social History Questionnaire (Best and Ericksen, 1973). The two groups were matched on age, sex, and self-reported social status. An item analysis was performed and the questions which differentiated between the delinquents and the nondelinquents were identified. A delinquency subscale was then developed from the 54 significant questions.

The Experimenter Bias Effect And Its Relation To Submission To Authority, Anat Rutenberg
The Experimenter Bias Effect And Its Relation To Submission To Authority, Anat Rutenberg
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Scientific researchers are expected to control the “Experimenter” or “Rosenthal” effect, in which the experimenter’s (E’s) expectations somehow induce the experimental results. Some seventy studies dealing with experimenter bias effect (EBE), many of them recent, were critically reviewed. Contradictory results and failures to replicate were reported. The most plausible explanation involved the personality characteristics of, and the dominance relation between, E and S. Accordingly, the present study examined one personality trait which seems to underlie the EBE, namely, submission to authority.
To elicit EBE, students serving as Es administered Ss Rosenthal’s Photo Rating Test (RPRT), a series of photographed faces …
An Exploration Of The Feelings And Attitudes Of Women Separated From Their Children Due To Incarceration, Dorothy Lundberg, Ann Sheekley, Therese Voelker
An Exploration Of The Feelings And Attitudes Of Women Separated From Their Children Due To Incarceration, Dorothy Lundberg, Ann Sheekley, Therese Voelker
Dissertations and Theses
Although significant research has shed light on what happens to children when they are removed from their parents, few studies have explored the effects on parents undergoing separation from their children. Discussions tend to be confined to separate dimensions exploring child's needs on one side and parental obligations on the other. Much of the planning and prolonged care provided for children in placement reflects a traditional child-centered focus. This has led to a lack of attention to parental needs, and a gross ignorance about their lives, feelings and aspirations.
When women are involuntarily separated from their children through incarceration, a …
Recent Role Changes Made By Women And The Effect These Changes Have Had On Marital Adjustment, Nancy L. Scolar
Recent Role Changes Made By Women And The Effect These Changes Have Had On Marital Adjustment, Nancy L. Scolar
Dissertations and Theses
Sex Roles, A History. From Insects to humans, gender is associated with specific behavior. Below the mammals there are sex differences in dominance that are correlated with androgen function on the inside, and with certain types of stimulation on the outside. In higher forms, the increasing complexity of brain development means increasing capacity for modification through experience and learned modes of adaptation to the environment.
By the time the primate level is reached, social influences have become so intricate and compelling as to clearly foreshadow culture.
According to Elizabeth Janeway in her article Reflections on the History of Women, in …
Maturity Of Adolescent Unwed Mothers, Sarah L. Claiborne
Maturity Of Adolescent Unwed Mothers, Sarah L. Claiborne
Dissertations and Theses
Adolescence traditionally has been recognized and accepted as a period of exploration of an occasional rebellion against the adult world. Explorations are viewed by behavioral scientists as a quest for identity expansion, and as such, a necessary phase for attaining maturity. Several tasks have been identified which each adolescent must complete if he is to reach maturity. For the present these tasks can be summarized as character formation, attainment of sexual identity, establishment of mature relationships and emancipation from parental control.
Society's attitude towards the rebellion and exploitation of youth is mixed. This confusion seems related to a general breakdown …
