A Behaviorally-Based Graduate Practicum Program In Applied Behavior Analysis, James Harper Kaye Aug 1982

A Behaviorally-Based Graduate Practicum Program In Applied Behavior Analysis, James Harper Kaye

Dissertations

Although practica are often required of psychology students at various points during their graduate training, seldom are any resulting skills described and validated. Faculty are occasionally involved in campus-based clinics which serve some practicum students; however, when practica are based off-campus, faculty are seldom directly involved. As a result, practica are frequently uncoordinated, duplicative, and non-specific in terms of their practicum student training procedures.

Although there have been some attempts reported to systematize and coordinate either off-campus or on-campus practica, no such effort has been previously reported in relation to multiple complex organizations, both on-campus and off-campus.

In the present …

The Effects Of Self-Recording On The Generality Of Parenting Behaviors, Sonia Beatriz Meyer Apr 1982

The Effects Of Self-Recording On The Generality Of Parenting Behaviors, Sonia Beatriz Meyer

Masters Theses

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of parental self-recording from audiotapes of family interactions on effective parenting skills and on the generality of their application to three different times of the day in which different child behaviors occurred.

Two single parents were instructed to deliver correct commands and differential reinforcement and to code and graph their verbalizations from audiotapes. Self-recording was introduced in one situation at a time, while audiotaped assessments were made by the parent in all three situations throughout the day. Both positive and cost incentive systems were used for the delivery of tapes …

Aspectos Atribucionales De La Utilización De Servicios De Salud. (Attributional Aspects Of The Utilization Of Health Services, Gerardo Marín, B Marín, A M. Padilla

Psychology

This paper reports on the answers given by 100 Hispanic residents of East Los Angeles, California to questions dealing with why they themselves, their families and people in general did not receive proper health care. As has been found in other studies, the reasons considered as most important by the subjects were the high cost of health services, the lack of medical insurance, being undocumented, lack of child care, long waits and difficulties in speaking English. Cultural reasons such as a preference for curanderos, fear of physicians or modesty were not considered as important as some authors have proposed. When …

Assessment, Intervention And Treatment Of Geriatric Psychopathology : A Comparison Of The Medical And Behavioral Models, Susan C. Mcclintock Jan 1982

Assessment, Intervention And Treatment Of Geriatric Psychopathology : A Comparison Of The Medical And Behavioral Models, Susan C. Mcclintock

Honors Theses

The elderly represent nearly a third of the population in public psychiatric facilities. The social and physiological changes associated with aging can lead to a variety of psychiatric disturbances which necessitate institutionalization of the elderly individual. Treatment of these disturbances is likely to be based on the medical model of psychopathology, although findings indicate that behaviorally-oriented therapy may often be the more appropriate course of action. The reported findings carry implications pertinent to the future of geropsychology.

A Comparison Of Reading And Listening Performances Of Braille And Print Readers, Betty P. Zook Dec 1981

A Comparison Of Reading And Listening Performances Of Braille And Print Readers, Betty P. Zook

Masters Theses

Blind and sighted subjects were tested on their capability to retain information after both reading and listening to specially prepared printed and taped materials. The sample consisted of graduate students and professional individuals. It was found that, on the average, subjects retained more after reading than listening. This effect was more pronounced in the braille reading subjects. As the level of complexity of the material increased, the difference in the points earned between the two modalities, reading and listening, increased significantly. A behavioral analysis suggested some reasons for this difference. It was suggested that further research into reading and listening …

A Case For Family Therapy For Low-Income Families, Ruth Mihevc Nov 1981

A Case For Family Therapy For Low-Income Families, Ruth Mihevc

Theses

"A Case for Family Therapy for Low-Income Families" explores the challenges faced by low-income families in accessing mental health services, particularly family therapy, and presents a model for addressing these challenges. The thesis begins by examining the relationship between social class and mental illness, noting that lower-income individuals face greater barriers to mental health care while also experiencing higher rates of mental illness. These barriers include logistical issues such as transportation, financial constraints, and scheduling conflicts, as well as systemic biases in the mental health delivery system that make it difficult for low-income families to access appropriate care.

The Relationship Between Knowledge Of Teamwork, Satisfaction, And Perceived Performance Effectiveness Among Professional Human Service Teams, Sonya Monroe-Clay Aug 1981

The Relationship Between Knowledge Of Teamwork, Satisfaction, And Perceived Performance Effectiveness Among Professional Human Service Teams, Sonya Monroe-Clay

Dissertations

This study investigated the relationship between knowledge of teamwork, performance, and satisfaction in members of human service teams. Team Knowledge was conceptualized as encompassing four critical areas: Personal-Interpersonal, Team Environment, Team Leadership, and Team Processing.

Research findings in the literature point to certain general benefits of the team model. Nevertheless, some teams are dysfunctional, which may be reflected in poor performance and low morale or satisfaction. Lack of knowledge about teamwork was identified as a possible contributor to such problems.

A major hypothesis of the present study was that there is a direct relationship between team knowledge and satisfaction, team …

Disabled Women: Sexism Without The Pedestal, Michelle Fine, Adrienne Asch

Publications and Research

The position of the disabled woman in current U.S. society deserves political, theoretical and empirical attention. In this paper we have delineated the economic, social and psychological constraints which place her at a distinct disadvantage, relative to disabled men and nondisabled women. We evaluate the ways in which having a disability is viewed as an impediment to traditional or nontraditional sex role development. The construct rolelessness is introduced, defined and examined. We conclude with reconmiendations for needed research and policy.

An Exploratory Investigation Comparing Battered And Non-Battered Women Using The Hand Test, Debra A. Dalton Jan 1981

An Exploratory Investigation Comparing Battered And Non-Battered Women Using The Hand Test, Debra A. Dalton

Masters Theses

The physical and mental abuse of women as wives and lovers is a largely unrecognized crime of violence just beginning to receive attention in the United States. The extent of wifebeating is difficult to determine since, although it occurs in every strata of society and every age group, it is underreported for a variety of reasons. The motives for wife abuse are complex. There are several social and psychological explanations that have been suggested as the underlying rationale for wifebeating. Psychological testing with battered women is rare and what testing that has been done has been limited to interviews and …
