The Effect Of Preliminary Training In Phoneme Discrimination On The Articulation Of An Unfamiliar Speech Sound., Dolores Smith Butt May 1965

The Effect Of Preliminary Training In Phoneme Discrimination On The Articulation Of An Unfamiliar Speech Sound., Dolores Smith Butt

Psychology ETDs

The usual procedure followed by speech therapists in correcting defective articulation is to begin with a period of auditory training before giving direct practice in articulation. Presumably, this auditory training will later transfer to articulation le~rnin5. Defective articulation is the most frequent type of speech problem which a speech therapist must treat. In these cases, a student may omit, distort, or substitute error sounds for the correct articulation of a speech sound, or phoneme. The ti1erapist attempts to teach the child. correct articulation, out in many cases the child cannot produce the phoneme correctly and direct practice is difficult. Therefore, …

A Comparative Study Of Discomfort Experienced By Surgical Patients On Three Selected Postoperative Days, Lillian Barker Bartlett May 1965

A Comparative Study Of Discomfort Experienced By Surgical Patients On Three Selected Postoperative Days, Lillian Barker Bartlett

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A descriptive survey was conducted to compare the discomfort experienced on three selected postoperative days to determine if there is one day identified by the patient as the most uncomfortable and to assess the symptoms of which he might complain. A checklist of twelve symptoms common to postsurgical patients was administered on the evenings of the second, third and fourth postoperative days by the researcher. Findings indicated that nineteen or 56 per cent of the thirty-four patients interviewed stated that the second day was most uncomfortable, nine or 27 per cent the third and six or 17 per cent the …

Suggestibility Of Placebo Reactors And Non-Reactors In The Autokinetic Situation, Lee Glenn Mason May 1965

Suggestibility Of Placebo Reactors And Non-Reactors In The Autokinetic Situation, Lee Glenn Mason

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The phenomenon of not relying solely up on one's own judgment and of distorting one's perception toward a perceived social norm has been observed to take place with a rather large percentage of subjects participating in a number of research projects. Both Asch and Sherif have done extensive work showing this distortion of perception when an individual is placed in a group setting and finds himself in a contradictory position between his own perception and that of the other group members.

Factors Related To First Year College Success In A Selected Group Of Scholarship Recipients, Laverl C. Giles May 1965

Factors Related To First Year College Success In A Selected Group Of Scholarship Recipients, Laverl C. Giles

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The idea of a scholarship program is almost as old as the oldest institution of higher learning. The universality of such a program is almost completely comprehensive throughout the world. Although the purpose of scholarship programs has varied as much as each of the institutions varies, in most of the situations the programs have been well acclaimed. The success of these programs in terms of the student has often been tested or at least scrutinized. This type of study has been attempted several times. However, both Harris (11) and Endler (7), in reviewing the literature from 1931 to 1959, report …

Informational And Teaching Effects On Changes In Prejudice Of College Students, Nolan E. Ashman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

An attempt was made in the present research to investigate the effects of informational source, instructional differences, environment in the college, and awareness of ethnic and religious attitudes as the result of the administration of the test instrument.

Subjects used in the study were drawn from courses in general psychology and basic orientation courses in engineering. All subjects were presented with a revision of the Bogardus Social Distance Scale following the fall quarter of instruction (1960-61 academic year). All but a control group taken from one psychology section received the same scale at the beginning of the instructional period.

Since …

The Programmed Text As An Aid To Teaching Spelling In Junior High School, Gordon Howard Nicholls May 1965

The Programmed Text As An Aid To Teaching Spelling In Junior High School, Gordon Howard Nicholls

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Organized education, historically, has been slow to commit itself to any sort of intensive examination of how learning can be both analyzed and substantially improved. But today Komoski (1960) tells us that we are looking beyond the traditional approaches to teaching. If a newly developed method is shown to be more effective than the techniques which have traditionally been employed, it is carefully considered for incorporation into the current education program.

Programmed instruction is just such an example of a recently developed teaching method which claims it will contribute much to education. It dates back to Pressey's report (1926) of …

A Comparison Of The Academic Achievement And Social Adjustment Of Mentally Retarded Students, C. Thomas Musgrave May 1965

A Comparison Of The Academic Achievement And Social Adjustment Of Mentally Retarded Students, C. Thomas Musgrave

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Public awareness of the problem of mental retardation is relatively new. Professional services in this area are less than one hundred and fifty years old in America. In essence, the treatment of the mentally retarded since ancient times has been very harsh. The Spartans from ancient Greece left all defectives exposed to the elements to die. They were treated with aversion and subjected to many indignities.

The Self-Concept And Failure In The Junior High School, Milton C. Madsen May 1965

The Self-Concept And Failure In The Junior High School, Milton C. Madsen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

From the observations of counselors and teachers within our school district there seem to be these indications: (a) That many failing students are experiencing personal adjustment problems due to a faulty self concept and that they tend to behave in terms of how they perceive themselves, or according to the role forced on them by others. So if they have been labeled as a failing student this is the role they perceive for themselves and they tend to behave in terms of the role they perceive for themselves. (b) Non-promoted students who have been retained seem to have a lower …

The Verbal-Quantitative Differential As An Indicator Of Personality Maladjustment, Robert W. Spencer May 1965

The Verbal-Quantitative Differential As An Indicator Of Personality Maladjustment, Robert W. Spencer

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Counseling centers at many universities are constantly trying to improve their value to the universities by identifying the students who have problems, and by making known to students the services that are available. Since many counseling centers are in direct contact with large numbers of students during the admissions testing program, it would seem that data gathered at this time should be carefully examined for clues that would aid a student in making a healthy and profitable adjustment to his university environment.

The Use Of "Fashion Therapy" As Adjunctive Therapy In The Rehabilitation Of Psychiatric Patients, Virginia Geddes Eyestone May 1965

The Use Of "Fashion Therapy" As Adjunctive Therapy In The Rehabilitation Of Psychiatric Patients, Virginia Geddes Eyestone

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Mental illness is one of the greatest public health problems and foremost challenges of our time. However, because of improved medical practices and modern research methods, more mental patients are now being released and returned to society than at any other recorded period.

The mentally ill person loses touch with reality. Things that once were of primary concern are no longer important. Many mental patients become accustomed to carelessness in dress and personal habits. This state of deterioration often remains as a mark of mental illness, and the resulting inappropriate dress frequently limits the activity of the individual. The patient …

Presentation Factors As Critical Variables In Learning By Program, Guide, And Self Study, Charles Holman Jennings

Master's Theses

Visionary suggestions for improving formal education are now at last becoming realities. More and better equipped plants are rising. Teachers' salaries are on the increase. More updated text books are available. Ability grouping is Widely practiced. A wider range and greater depth or course offerings enhances the high school curricula. Increased alumni contributions and government grants are leading to expansion of staff and facilities at the college level. However, none of these consider how a student learns. Thus none copes directly with the most basic o! needs, that of making the teaching-learning process itself more effective and efficient. The approach …

Patterns Of Response As A Function Of Intelligence, Motivation, And Personality, David T. Hess Jan 1965

Patterns Of Response As A Function Of Intelligence, Motivation, And Personality, David T. Hess

Master's Theses

The present study will attempt to investigate C and RSR differences, sampling from a broad range of functions, using measures which may be less subject to verbal sets than the more traditional methods used by Couch and Keniston. The differences will be assessed in terms of the subjects' intelligence, general personality function, and test taking motivation.

An Analysis Of Extreme Response Set As Related To Personality, David L. Hamilton Jan 1965

An Analysis Of Extreme Response Set As Related To Personality, David L. Hamilton

Master's Theses

The phenomenon that certain individuals have unique and consistent patterns of responding to test items is called ''response set" or "response style". Such a set leads a person to respond to test items differently than he would if the same content were presented in a different manner or form. Thus, when response sets are present, the content of a statement become less important in determining the response. During the last decade, the study of various response styles has been one of the most active areas of research in psychology.

Sex Differences In The Arousal Of Need For Affiliation, M. C. Robbins, J. M. Bregenzer, R. T. Flint Jan 1965

Sex Differences In The Arousal Of Need For Affiliation, M. C. Robbins, J. M. Bregenzer, R. T. Flint

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

This study reports that the Pelto Projective Pictures when scored by the Atkinson-Heyns-Veroff procedure is a valid instrument for measuring n affiliation. The hypothesis that an experimental group of junior-high-school students exposed to a stimulus would display a significantly higher mean n affiliation score than a control group was rejected. A sex difference was involved in the failure to reject the null hypothesis. There is strong evidence that n affiliation was aroused in an experimental group of females, but not in an experimental group of males. The Pelto Projective Pictures were successful in discriminating this difference. Moreover, the scoring procedure, …

Weather, Crime, And Mental Illness, R. Joseph Lucero, John P. Brantner, Byron W. Brown, Gordon W. Olson

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

ABSTRACT - A simple count of disturbed incidents in the mentally ill and total radio transmissions of the Minneapolis Police Departmenf were collected daily over a six-month period. These were correlated with calendar time, temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure for the same period. Separate comparisons were made of all these measures for December 1959 with those of other Decembers. All the weather variables correlated linearly and significantly with the behavior v.ariables; temperature and humidity, positively; barometric pressure negatively. Calendar time for the half year correlated linearly and negatively. December 1959 had a higher crime and mental disturbance rate than other …

A Study Of The Concerns Of Eleventh And Twelfth Grade Seminary Students By Sex And Grade In Areas Covered By The Thirty-Five Directional Objectives Of The Lds Seminary System, M. Richard Maxfield Jan 1965

A Study Of The Concerns Of Eleventh And Twelfth Grade Seminary Students By Sex And Grade In Areas Covered By The Thirty-Five Directional Objectives Of The Lds Seminary System, M. Richard Maxfield

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the concerns of eleventh and twelfth grade L.D.S. Seminary students in areas covered by each of the thirty-five directional objectives of the L.D.S. Seminary System and to determine whether significant differences occur on the basis of grade and sex. A student inventory was constructed to measure concerns. The question of which directional objectives cause the greatest concern was to be answered for each male and female, junior and senior group. Five null hypotheses were formulated hypothesizing no differences in concerns between juniors and seniors, male and female groups.
The student inventory was …

The Relationship Between Daydreams And Manifest Needs, Donald Cooper Watkins Jan 1965

The Relationship Between Daydreams And Manifest Needs, Donald Cooper Watkins

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

For many years psychologists have been interested in studying methods by which it is possible to assess the presence and strengths of needs (drives) within the human being. In particular, is has long been felt that the needs of an individual are expressed in his daydreams or fantasies. The purpose of the present study was, then, to investigate empirically the relationship between reported daydreaming behavior and manifest needs.
