Effect Of Maze Arm Alternation On Maze Traversal Latency : Analysis Of The Aftereffects Hypothesis, Ronald Seymour Johnson Jan 1968

Effect Of Maze Arm Alternation On Maze Traversal Latency : Analysis Of The Aftereffects Hypothesis, Ronald Seymour Johnson

Master's Theses

Clark Hull (1952) proposed that nonreinforccd trials facilitate distinctive after effects and used this "aftereffect" theory to account for the PREE (the greater resistance to extinction of partially rewarded Ss as compared to continuously rewarded Ss). The theory proposed that stimulus traces of a nonrewarded trial (SN) persist and are conditioned to the locomotor response (Ri) on trials which are reinforced and preceded by nonreinforced trials. If t he SN_>Ri association has been established under partial reward conditions, and since SN occurs during extinction, PREE is predicted.

Effects Of Category-Relevance, Retention Measure, And Category-Affiliation Upon Retention Of The Aging, Gary M. Tyson Jan 1968

Effects Of Category-Relevance, Retention Measure, And Category-Affiliation Upon Retention Of The Aging, Gary M. Tyson

Master's Theses

The present investigation represents an attempt to further explore several parameters of short-term memory as a function of the relevance of appropriateness of the verbal materials utilized. It is the author's contention that due to changing patterns of interests and experiences accompanying chronological aging, certain types of verbal material vary with respect to their relevance for use with aging populations. In regard to parameters of short-term memory, the present study contains provisions for exploring efficiency of retention as a function of the retention measure; and category•affiliated as opposed to randomly-selected words. A more complete and integrated formulation is presented in …

Processes Of Cognitive Growth: Infancy, Jerome S. Bruner Jan 1968

Processes Of Cognitive Growth: Infancy, Jerome S. Bruner

Heinz Werner Lectures

"This is the third lecture given at Clark University, Worcester, Massachusetts in honor of the late Heinz Werner, world-famous developmental psychologist. In this volume Dr.Bruner discusses four great issues in human infancy. Through what processes does voluntary control of behavior develop? Through what means does the child gain control of his own attention? Through what form of learning does the infant progress from being a one-track enterprise, capable seemingly of one activity at a time, to a capacity for carrying out several lines of activity jointly or synergetically? Finally, how does the infant manage to begin a career of reciprocation …

The Relationship Between Beards And The Self Concept, Walter H. Nelson Jan 1968

The Relationship Between Beards And The Self Concept, Walter H. Nelson

All Master's Theses

This research investigated possible differences between the individual self concepts of bearded and non-bearded college men. Two groups of college men, 50 bearded (B) and 50 non-bearded (NB), were randomly selected, interviewed, and given the Tennessee Self Concept Scale (TSCS). Subjects were placed into appropriate categories by judges when they were present during testing times, and by the researcher when they were not. No significant differences in the self concepts existed between groups. These results may reflect what may be expected from other groups or college men.

The Role Of Adventitious Reinforcement In Operant Discrimination, Alan Kamil, John W. Davenport Jan 1968

The Role Of Adventitious Reinforcement In Operant Discrimination, Alan Kamil, John W. Davenport

Avian Cognition Papers

Rats were trained in 2 SD-SΔ discrimination experiments in which the effects of an SD-postponement contingency during SΔ and temporal regularity of SΔ duration were assessed. Experiment I showed that discrimination is markedly facilitated by the presence of an SD-postponement contingency of either fixed or variable duration. Experiment II showed that variable-duration SΔ periods in a noncontingent schedule can also greatly enhance formation of an operant discrimination. These effects were attributed to differences in the probability of adventitious reinforcement of SΔ behavior by SD events.

Job Satisfaction In Relation To General Satisfaction And Personality, Elias E. Mina Jan 1968

Job Satisfaction In Relation To General Satisfaction And Personality, Elias E. Mina

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The purpose of this study was to investigate the idea that the personal characteristics of the worker and his general attitude toward his environment influence his attitude about his job. 101 public school teachers were administered five questionnaires to measure: overall job satisfaction with a job, degree of intrinsic job satisfaction, general satisfaction, neuroticism, and 18 personality variables. Results suggested that job satisfaction had a positive relation to general satisfaction and a negative relation to maladjustment. Overall job satisfaction and intrinsic job satisfaction were not related to each other and each related to a different set of personality dimensions.
