The Effect Of A Past History Of Reinforcement On Signal Detection, Jo Ann Weaver Jan 1975

The Effect Of A Past History Of Reinforcement On Signal Detection, Jo Ann Weaver

Honors Theses

Previous research indicated that a past history of reinforcement affects perception, but conflicting data were found concerning the effect of punishment. These experiments were testing the theory of signal detection, which holds that a past history of reinforcement when linked with a signal makes perception of that signal more likely in the future. Eighty eight students from introductory psychology classes at the University of Richmond participated. Subjects looked at inkblots and made responses on a human operant apparatus. In Experiment 2 an analysis of variance revealed a significant difference in the perception of human forms in ambiguous inkblots after a …

The Effects Of Modeling, Behavioral Rehearsal, And Videotape Feedback In Assertive Training, Judi Wallace Jan 1975

The Effects Of Modeling, Behavioral Rehearsal, And Videotape Feedback In Assertive Training, Judi Wallace

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the relative effectiveness of (1) modeling, (2) modeling plus behavior rehearsal, and (3) modeling, behavior rehearsal,_ and videotaped feedback in assertive training.. Twelve psychiatric outpatients were randomly assigned to three treatment groups, ,each of which received 5 hours of training. Four additional subjects served as a waiting .list control group.

The dependent measures used were the Assertive Behavior Situation Test (ABST), a behavioral role-play test, and two additional paper and pencil measures (Constriction Scale and Fear of Negative Evaluation). Each of these measures was administered at pre- and post-test sessions.

Split-plot 4.2 analyses of variance (Kirk, 1968) …

The Effects Of Frustration And Social Desirability On Heterosexual Attraction, Donelson R. Forsyth, Russell D. Clark Iii Jan 1975

The Effects Of Frustration And Social Desirability On Heterosexual Attraction, Donelson R. Forsyth, Russell D. Clark Iii

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

Walster, Walster, Piliavin and Schmidt's (1973) finding that a selectively hard-to-get female was preferred over either an easy-to-get or a hard-to-get female was replicated for unfrustrated males. However, when males were mildly frustrated, they preferred females who had indicated attraction toward them. The implications of these results were discussed in terms of external rewards and the motivational state of individuals.

Meaning Formation, Gail F. Czukar Jan 1975

Meaning Formation, Gail F. Czukar

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

An attempt was made to demonstrate laboratory conditions in which experiential components of meaning (i.e. perceptual and emotional correlates of observable stimuli and responses) pattern to form a gestalt. Semantic differential scales were used to measure the meaning of simple visual figures in two phases of the experiment. The first phase consisted of a pre- and post-exposure measurement of meaning with an intervening exposure to a compound visual display. In the second phase, subjects were exposed to an altered visual display and then rated the stimuli again.

Results do not support the predictions that (1) the meaning of the central …

Community Corrections, Judith Ursula Mary Gedye Jan 1975

Community Corrections, Judith Ursula Mary Gedye

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Troubled and troubling youth have been the focus of interest for generations of mankind. Modern society has chosen to deal with its “delinquent” youth in characteristically alienating ways. This thesis looks in depth at the development of community psychology, the history of the juvenile court system and corrections, the literature of troubled and troubling youth, and the history of the community of Kitchener-Waterloo in an effort to understand the current situation for youth in our culture. Theintent of the thesis was to develop a Group Home Committee which would focus the interest and energy of some members of a community …

An Investigation Of Semantic Desensitization As A Therapy In The Treatment Of Snake Phobia, Linda Rose Brown Jan 1975

An Investigation Of Semantic Desensitization As A Therapy In The Treatment Of Snake Phobia, Linda Rose Brown

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The initial study of the present research was conducted to determine the effect of low versus high imagery stimulus words on the outcome of semantic desensitization as conducted by Hekmat and Vanian (1971). The overall lack of significant findings led to a more intense examination of the basic underlying assumptions of semantic desensitization. Study II was designed in an attempt to find a method which would successfully achieve meaning change while maintaining interest. A paired associate method was more powerful than the Hekmat procedure in producing meaning change. Study III compared the potency of the paired associate and Hekmat procedure …

A Study Of The Onset, Severity And Frequency Of Illness As Related To Life Changes And Coping Mechanisms, Lynne Susan Dubblestyne Jan 1975

A Study Of The Onset, Severity And Frequency Of Illness As Related To Life Changes And Coping Mechanisms, Lynne Susan Dubblestyne

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

A study which investigated the relationships between the onset, frequency and severity of past and present illnesses, with life changes and coping mechanisms was carried out. Subjects consisted of three levels of health care: (1) symptom-free (N=88); (2) minor illness (N=72), and (3) hospital patients (N=100). Three measures were employed to test these relationships: (1) the Schedule of Recent Experience (SRE); (2) the Medical History Check-List (MHCL) and, (3) the Boston University Personality Inventory (BUPI). In addition, Seriousness of Illness Rating Scale (SIRS) mean values or severity weights were assigned to subjects’ physician diagnosed illnesses.

As expected, the amount of …

Measures Of Approach And Avoidance In The Defence Style Of Spider Phobics, Gysbert Herman De Vink Jan 1975

Measures Of Approach And Avoidance In The Defence Style Of Spider Phobics, Gysbert Herman De Vink

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Phobic behaviour is traditionally described in terms of avoidance of the phobic object. Andrews (1966) contested this notion and formulated several postulates in which approach toward the phobic object as well as avoidance could be expected as the behavioural manifestation of the phobia. In the present research Andrews’ idea of approach is examined with behavioural and pencil and paper measures.

On the basis of Repression-Sensitization Scale (R-S) scores and their self-rated fear of spiders, 30 fearful repressors and 30 fearful sensitizers were obtained. These people were then tested with the Behavioral Avoidance Test designed by Lang and Lazovick (1963), a …

Supervisory Performance And Satisfaction In Relation To Supervisory Style Interactions At Adjacent Levels Of Management, Gary F. Hanke Jan 1975

Supervisory Performance And Satisfaction In Relation To Supervisory Style Interactions At Adjacent Levels Of Management, Gary F. Hanke

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The present study examined, for a range of industrial management positions, the relationship of supervisory style patterns at adjacent managerial levels to supervisory performance and job satisfaction. It also investigated the utility of Fiedler’s Contingency Model for determining the supervisory style associated with optimal work group performance at the middle levels of industrial management. Supervisory style was viewed as the extent to which a supervisor’s job related behaviour was basically task-oriented or human relations-oriented. One hundred and twenty-four production supervisory staff representing six manufacturing companies and six organizational levels completed a multi-faceted questionnaire. Measurement devices included: three indices of supervisory …

Personality Factors And Operant Heart Rate Conditioning, Jerry M. Malkiewicz Jan 1975

Personality Factors And Operant Heart Rate Conditioning, Jerry M. Malkiewicz

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The present study was concerned with certain individual differences that relate to a subject’s ability to increase his heart rate on command when given appropriate external feedback. The main purpose was to extend to the operant conditioning paradigm Eysenck’s theory that introverts classically condition more readily than extraverts. A second purpose was to determine which personality factors—extraversion, anxiety, and ability to perceive autonomic responses—contribute to heart rate control in operant conditioning. The Eysenck Personality Inventory and the Autonomic Perception Questionnaire were administered to 46 undergraduate males who attempted to accelerate their heart rates, with visual proportional feedback provided, during 20, …

The Experimenter Bias Effect And Its Relation To Submission To Authority, Anat Rutenberg Jan 1975

The Experimenter Bias Effect And Its Relation To Submission To Authority, Anat Rutenberg

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Scientific researchers are expected to control the “Experimenter” or “Rosenthal” effect, in which the experimenter’s (E’s) expectations somehow induce the experimental results. Some seventy studies dealing with experimenter bias effect (EBE), many of them recent, were critically reviewed. Contradictory results and failures to replicate were reported. The most plausible explanation involved the personality characteristics of, and the dominance relation between, E and S. Accordingly, the present study examined one personality trait which seems to underlie the EBE, namely, submission to authority.

To elicit EBE, students serving as Es administered Ss Rosenthal’s Photo Rating Test (RPRT), a series of photographed faces …

Obesity : Two Behavioral Approaches To Weight Reduction, Albert Blake Davidson Jan 1975

Obesity : Two Behavioral Approaches To Weight Reduction, Albert Blake Davidson

Dissertations and Theses

Much of the research on obesity has been designed to explore its relationship to the behavior of overeating. Although a number of physiological, societal, cultural and family background variables have been detailed, researchers have sought an approach that does not rely heavily on these considerations. Most weight reduction programs fail to recognize and concentrate on empirically demonstrated differences between obese and normal subjects. Researchers have shown that obese subjects seem to be more sensitive to external than internal stimuli. A behavioral approach to weight reduction that emphasizes and uses these external stimuli was hypothesized to be the treatment of choice. …

A Preliminary Evaluation Of The Independent Living Subsidy Program In The Model Cities Area, W. Patrick Frawley, Mary Goodwin Gossart Jan 1975

A Preliminary Evaluation Of The Independent Living Subsidy Program In The Model Cities Area, W. Patrick Frawley, Mary Goodwin Gossart

Dissertations and Theses

This is a descriptive and analytical study of the twelve adolescents who have participated in the Independent Living Subsidy Program (ILSP) in the Model Cities area of Portland. It is an assessment of the program’s impact on the adolescents in working toward the goals of independence and self-sufficiency.

The concept of a program which would subsidize out-of-home care for certain adolescents in living facilities of their own, with a measure of independence, was conceived by a caseworker at the Children’s Services Division (CSD) and an administrator of a children’s residential care facility.

Maturity Of Adolescent Unwed Mothers, Sarah L. Claiborne Dec 1974

Maturity Of Adolescent Unwed Mothers, Sarah L. Claiborne

Dissertations and Theses

Adolescence traditionally has been recognized and accepted as a period of exploration of an occasional rebellion against the adult world. Explorations are viewed by behavioral scientists as a quest for identity expansion, and as such, a necessary phase for attaining maturity. Several tasks have been identified which each adolescent must complete if he is to reach maturity. For the present these tasks can be summarized as character formation, attainment of sexual identity, establishment of mature relationships and emancipation from parental control.

Society's attitude towards the rebellion and exploitation of youth is mixed. This confusion seems related to a general breakdown …

An Analysis Of Participation And Leadership In A College Seminar, Hugh J. Phillips Dec 1974

An Analysis Of Participation And Leadership In A College Seminar, Hugh J. Phillips

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The task of this research was to describe the rates and patterns of verbal behavior emitted in a college seminar, under two leadership conditions, teacher leadership and student leadership. The subjects were 12 college students and the course's associate professor. The data were gathered by using R. F. Bale's interaction process analysis. Results indicate that rates of verbal behavior and numbers and rates of paired student-to-student interaction were higher under student leadership than under teacher leadership. In addition, there was a more equitable distribution of responses under student leadership than under teacher leadership.

Couple Awareness And Communication, Gary Johnson Dec 1974

Couple Awareness And Communication, Gary Johnson

Honors Theses

Along with many other psychologists and sociologists, I am alarmed by the rapid increase in divorce rates. Toffler, in Future Shock, suggests one result of increasing technology might be the break up of the basic family unit. Gone are the days of the average couple meeting and settling down in the same town they have always lived in, surrounded by a secure and stable milieu. No longer are most women satisfied to take on the role of housewife, accepting their main responsibility as cleaning, cooking, and clothing their families. A marriage in our increasingly changing society is made up of …

Decision-Making Style As A Factor In The Selection Of Task-Group Coordinator, David E. Morris Dec 1974

Decision-Making Style As A Factor In The Selection Of Task-Group Coordinator, David E. Morris

Student Work

To date, emergent leadership literature has not clearly indicated what variables influence group members' perception and subsequent selection of a group leader. One approach to the study of this problem has been to analyze group members' verbal behavior to identify empirically behaviors which are more frequent among leaders than nonleaders within a task group. The basic assumption underlying this approach appears to be that a group selects as its leader that individual from the group who most frequently exhibits some specific "leadership behavior(s)." The literature indicates, however, that this approach has been misleading and inconclusive. For example, in an early …
