The Effects Of Locus Of Control On Performance In Self-Directed Study, Jane Vaughn Apr 1975

The Effects Of Locus Of Control On Performance In Self-Directed Study, Jane Vaughn

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

A sample was taken from a self-directed statistics/experimental psychology class to investigate the relationship between locus of control orientation of the students and their academic performance. Self-directed study was defined as student oriented learning with few lectures and the use of contingency points (points earned for work completed) as reinforcement for completing work packets and projects. (The null hypothesis was that there is no relationship between grades and locus of control in the self-directed class.) It was found that internals progress through a self-directed class setting at a significantly faster rate than do externals.

The Abused Child And His Parents, Richard David Young Apr 1975

The Abused Child And His Parents, Richard David Young

IUSTITIA

Children in our society pass through a prolonged period of dependency during which they are taught the complex technological and social skills necessary for successful adult functioning. The child's experiences during this period can have profound effects on the development of his potential for meaningful interpersonal relationships, competency, and creativity. The child's dependence needs are the complement of the caretaker's nurturance. When nurturance fails or is inconsistent, societal loss merges with individual tragedy. Yet nurturance does occasionally fail. Some of those charged with the care of children abdicate their responsibilities, and do not provide the physical and/or emotional necessities for …

The Effect Of Interpersonal Trust, S̲ Naivete, And The Use Of Deception Upon S̲ Perceived Demand Awareness, Robert George De Laney Apr 1975

The Effect Of Interpersonal Trust, S̲ Naivete, And The Use Of Deception Upon S̲ Perceived Demand Awareness, Robert George De Laney

Master's Theses

The present experiment was designed to study the effect of the variables of naivete concerning psychological experimenta tion, the use of deception, and level of trust on a S's ability to become demand aware. It was hypothesized tha t the demand awareness of high and low trust s would be differentially affected by their level of knowledge about psychological experi menta tion, and by the type of explanation given to them (none, honest, deceptive) as to the purpose of the experiment. Non significant results indica ted no support for this hypothesis. Difficulties with the subjective aspect of the demand awareness …

On Justifying Enforced Requirements: A Reply To Baier, David B. Lyons Apr 1975

On Justifying Enforced Requirements: A Reply To Baier, David B. Lyons

Faculty Scholarship

There are limits to the possible subjects of justification. Typically, it concerns human behavior and things that human intervention can affect. Failing special circumstances, it makes no sense to speak of justifying the weather. There may be other limits to the class of possible subjects for justification; for example, it is sometimes said that a thing cannot be justified unless it has been indicted, though it is not clear how this claim should be taken. For there simply may be no point in bothering to justify something that is not suspect in some way, and the relevant condition can generally …

A Concurrent Validity Study Of The Acting Out Score Of The Hand Test, Arthur Dosch

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

In an investigation of the concurrent validity of the Acting Out Score (AOS) of the Hand Test, the AOSs of 32 normal college students were compared with the scores they obtained on two clinically popular self-report criterion measures of hostility and aggression, the Buss-Durkee (BD) and the Hostility and Direction of Hostility Questionnaire (HDHQ). The AOS did not significantly differentiate between high and low scoring groups on either the HDHQ or BD although both criterion measures were found to be significantly related.

The Relationship Of Locus Of Control Of The Diabetic Patient And Compliance With Medical Regimen, Lois Daniel Mar 1975

The Relationship Of Locus Of Control Of The Diabetic Patient And Compliance With Medical Regimen, Lois Daniel

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The literature indicates that many diabetic patients do not adhere to their prescribed medical regimen and that there is a need to discover factors that stimulate compliant behavior. It has been proposed that the patient's decision to accept or reject treatment has many determinants. This study explored the effect of one such determinant, the locus of control (the source of the stimulus for a person's behavior). It was hypothesized that a person with an internal locus (one who believes his actions influence his future) would be more likely to comply with a medical regimen than one with an external locus …

Effect Of Stressful And "Neutral" Moving Images And Still Images On Dreaming, Elizabeth Anne Anderson Feb 1975

Effect Of Stressful And "Neutral" Moving Images And Still Images On Dreaming, Elizabeth Anne Anderson

Dissertations and Theses

A controlled presleep experience was used in an attempt to trace waking experience in dreams. Dream reports were collected in the laboratory from 12 dreamers (half men, half women; half recallers, half nonrecallers), using the electrophysiological method of Dement and Kleitman. Following a baseline night, each dreamer was awakened on three consecutive nights during every REM period (rapid eye movement and Stage 1-ascending EEG pattern). Immediately prior to sleep on Night 3, four of the dreamers viewed an emotionally arousing film, four others viewed a slide sequence having the same content as the stressful film, and four others viewed an …

Matching With Compound Sample Stimuli In The Pigeon, Richard G. Marriott Feb 1975

Matching With Compound Sample Stimuli In The Pigeon, Richard G. Marriott

Psychology ETDs

The role of attentional and stimulus encoding factors in animal memory processes has recently received increased discussion. Central to the assumed processes of selective attention and stimulus encoding is the role of selective training or practice. The present experiment addressed the possibility of attentional or encoding factors in the appearance of differential retention effects between stimulus dimensions and the reversal of these effects by selective training. Four pigeons were trained to perform a 3-second delayed matching-to-sample task in which some trials began with a compound sample stimulus, i.e., a geometric form superimposed on a color. When the choice stimuli appeared, …

A Comparison Of Self-Perception Between Facilitated & Leaderless Developmental Groups, Gloria Gatti Feb 1975

A Comparison Of Self-Perception Between Facilitated & Leaderless Developmental Groups, Gloria Gatti

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Change in self-perception, assessed by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), F scale and an experimenter developed self-perception measure, was examined for participants in facilitated and leaderless developmental groups and a control group. The subjects, students in sophomore level psychology courses, were administered the MBTI, F scale, and self-perception measure one week prior to the first developmental group session and one week after completion of nine group sessions. No significant difference was found in amount of change in self -perception between the three groups. It was concluded that brief low intensity developmental groups may not produce significant positive chance in self-perception …

Risk-Taking Propensity In Relation To The Choice Of Vasectomy As A Preferred Method Of Contraception, Kathleen Hines Feb 1975

Risk-Taking Propensity In Relation To The Choice Of Vasectomy As A Preferred Method Of Contraception, Kathleen Hines

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The present study investigated the possible relationship between the degree of risk-taking propensity and the choice of vasectomy as a preferred method of birth control. Three sample groups, vasectomy seeking men, their wives, and men using contraceptive measures other than permanent sterilization, were tested for degree of risk-taking. The instrument used to measure risk-taking propensity was The Desire For Certainty Test (Brim, 1955). In addition, selected demographic variables were analyzed for the two groups of males to assure a relatively greater degree of homogenietv among these two male sample groups. A Dunnett's Test was used to assess the difference between …

Recognition And Attractiveness As A Function Of Sex And Race, Evelyn Elizabeth Hamilton Schroder Feb 1975

Recognition And Attractiveness As A Function Of Sex And Race, Evelyn Elizabeth Hamilton Schroder

Student Work

The present experiment replicated and refined.tests of. recognition memory for the human face. Three subject groups were used: White American females, White American males and Black African Malawian males. In part one, eighty monochromatic slides of Black and White American college seniors of both sexes were shown as (original) stimuli and then shown again with eighty new slides in a paired comparison task.

An analysis of variance performed on the recognition scores revealed the following results: (a) A main effect for groups of slides with American females generating significantly fewer errors than the African males; (b) A main effect for …
