Constructive Memory For Bizarre And Sensible Sentences, Paula T. Hertel, H. C. Ellis Jan 1979

Constructive Memory For Bizarre And Sensible Sentences, Paula T. Hertel, H. C. Ellis

Psychology Faculty Research

Sensible, interrelated sentences were presented with or without bizarre sentences that could be transformed to fit the context of the sensible sentences. Two experiments examined subjects' ability to recognize or recall both types of sentences, either immediately or after 2 weeks. Bizarre sentences were frequently recognized at immediate testing; they were generally unavailable at delayed recognition and were never recalled verbatim. In addition, results indicated that transformations of bizarre sentences were stored in memory but were not well incorporated within the structure for the sensible material. These findings are consistent with a constructive approach to memory. Finally, the results suggest …

A Study Of Basic Characteristics Of "The Man Of Tao" Of Lao Tzu And "Self-Actualizing People" Of Maslow, Kuang-Fu Chang Jan 1979

A Study Of Basic Characteristics Of "The Man Of Tao" Of Lao Tzu And "Self-Actualizing People" Of Maslow, Kuang-Fu Chang

Masters Theses

This thesis serves two purposes: One, it reveals the influences of Taoist philosophy on Maslow's humanistic psychology which has become the third force in the field of psychology; secondly it lets all those who have regarded Chinese classics as nothing but a bundle of obsolete stuffs know that an archaic well still has fresh water to be drawn out to use.

In Tao Te Ching, or Lao Tzu the book, the man of Tao and innocent child are highly praised by Lao Tzu and may be referred to as ideal characters of his mind. Metaphysically, Tao is the Way, the …

Test-Retest Reliability Of The Hand Test With The Institutionalized Elderly, Thomas J. Lundquist Jan 1979

Test-Retest Reliability Of The Hand Test With The Institutionalized Elderly, Thomas J. Lundquist

Masters Theses

The Hand Test (Wagner, 1962) was administered to 50 institutionalized elderly subjects. There were 36 female and 14 male subjects with a mean age of 76.94 years and a standard deviation of 10.48 years. A list of possible subjects was initially obtained from the activity directors at each nursing home. They were instructed to list the individuals which were "alert" and would be cooperative. The subjects were given a brief organic screening device to eliminate those subjects of severe or moderate mental impairment. Those subjects which missed two or less questions were then administered the Hand Test. Following approximately a …

A Comparison Of Stimulus Control Procedures And Progressive Relaxation In The Treatment Of Insomnia, Mark L. Balen Jan 1979

A Comparison Of Stimulus Control Procedures And Progressive Relaxation In The Treatment Of Insomnia, Mark L. Balen

Masters Theses

Behavioral treatments for insomnia have seen increasing use in recent years due to the inefficacy of pharmacological treatments. Behavioral treatments utilized have included progressive relaxation training, systematic desensitization, stimulus control procedures, biofeedback, autogenic training, paradoxical instructions, and several miscellaneous procedures. Research has shown all of these treatments to be effective, although there have been methodological flaws in many of the studies. Stimulus control procedures have never been compared to progressive relaxation in the treatment of insomnia.

In the present study six insomniacs with a mean latency to sleep onset of at least 30 minutes were used to compare stimulus contol …

Relationship Of Locus Of Control And Other Personality Characteristics In Enuretics, Judy Louise Bowlby Jan 1979

Relationship Of Locus Of Control And Other Personality Characteristics In Enuretics, Judy Louise Bowlby

Masters Theses

Past research concerning the personality construct of enuretic children has demonstrated conflicting results. During recent years, the concept of internal versus external locus of control has been used in extensive research dealing with personality and behavioral characteristics of various populations. However, there had not been a study involving locus of control among enuretics. One purpose of the present study was to identify locus of control and other personality and behavioral characteristics among both enuretic and "normal" (non-enuretic) children and their mothers. Another objective was to determine valuable predictors for locus of control in enuretics, locus of control in mothers of …

Cognitive Effort And Memory, S. W. Tyler, Paula T. Hertel, M. C. Mccallum, H. C. Ellis Jan 1979

Cognitive Effort And Memory, S. W. Tyler, Paula T. Hertel, M. C. Mccallum, H. C. Ellis

Psychology Faculty Research

We propose that the concept of cognitive effort in memory is both useful and important. Cognitive effort is defined as the engaged proportion of limited-capacity central processing. It·was hypothesized that this variable might have important memorial consequences and might also be a potential confounding factor in levels-of-processing paradigms. The first experiment tested this possibility using two types of incidental-learning tasks factorially combined with two degrees of effort. It was found that high effort led to better recall than low effort, but that level-of-processing effects were nonsignificant. A second experiment clearly demonstrated the feasibility of using performance on a secondary task …

Individual Differences In Human Operant Heart Rate Conditioning: Autonomic, Cognitive And Dispositional Concomitants, Paul Favaro Jan 1979

Individual Differences In Human Operant Heart Rate Conditioning: Autonomic, Cognitive And Dispositional Concomitants, Paul Favaro

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Research in human operant heart rate conditioning concerned with the elucidation of the mediators of operant heart rate changes has postulated five mediating mechanisms related to operant heart rate change: respiratory, somatic-muscular, central neurological, cognitive and dispositional (personality). However, examination of the literature indicates that much of this research has produced equivocal results, hence, a clear picture of mediation has not emerged. Experimenters interested in the events that mediate operant heart rate changes have not devoted much attention to the individual variability that is so pervasive in studies of human psychophysiology. Individuals may fundamentally differ in teh autonomic, central neurological, …

An Assessment Of The Validity Of The Developmental Inventory Scales For Children (Disc), Marian Kathleen Mainland

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The Developmental Inventory Scales for Children (DISC) was designed as a screening device for preschool children. The purpose of the study was to assess the validity of the DISC. Twenty male and twenty female preschoolers were observed for three 30 minute sessions and their activities recorded by an observer. The observer then rated each child in each of the areas of the DISC under study. Each child was then rated by his/her teacher and one parent using the same rating scales as had the observer. The DISC was then administered to each child and each of the areas under study …

A Descriptive Study Of Parish Clergy And Their Counseling Practices, Gregory J. Ludlow

Masters Theses

First paragraph:

It has been the function of societies throughout history to provide comfort and support for it's troubled members. In the past, this function was performed by the society's religious institutions.Today, as in the past, people who want solutions.to the problems they experience, or who want to gain pathways to possible solutions, look to their religion, their church organization, their clergyman, to their God. The clergymen of a community are apt to be the first professionals of that community to be consulted when the need for help is felt.

The Motivation Of Self-Investment, Dan Nunley Dec 1978

The Motivation Of Self-Investment, Dan Nunley

Graduate Theses

A game of chance void of feedback was played by 36 adults to determine the motivational properties of various degrees of self-investment. The levels of self-investment were created by altering the extent to which subjects were involved in making one of the symbols used in the game. A practice trial was used to establish each subjects base score and a final trial to determine behavior changes induced by self-investment. The gains between trials yielded significant results (p<.01) due to subject participation in the experimental process.

Parental Perception Of The Neonate, Liza Ann Webb Dec 1978

Parental Perception Of The Neonate, Liza Ann Webb

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to determine maternal and paternal perceptions of the neonate. The Broussard Neonatal Perception Inventory was used to measure perception.

Thirty couples who delivered normal, healthy, first-born infants at a Naval Hospital in San Diego volunteered for the study. Consent forms were signed during the hospital stay and the Broussard Neonatal Perception Inventory was administered to both parents in the homes when the infants were one month old.

Statistical analysis of data showed that mothers and fathers did rate their one-month-old infants as above the average infant using the Broussard Neonatal Perception Inventory. The range …

Pharmacological Effects On Aggression And Manual Responding Generated By Tail Shock In The Squirrel Monkey, Grace S. Emley Dec 1978

Pharmacological Effects On Aggression And Manual Responding Generated By Tail Shock In The Squirrel Monkey, Grace S. Emley

Dissertations

The response-independent, fixed-time delivery of electric tail shock in the squirrel monkey generated bites on a rubber hose immediately following shock delivery and manual responses on a lever immediately preceding shock. The procedure generated two temporally and topographically different responses in the single organism in a single experimental session. All responses were measured objectively via response manipulanda and recorded on cumulative recorders and counters. Nine pharmacological compounds were administered to the squirrel monkey after a stable baseline of bite and lever press responding had been established. Three stimulant compounds - d-amphetamine, caffeine, cocaine; three tranquilizer compounds - nicotine, chlordiazepoxide, chlorpromazine; …

Use Of A Modified Instruction Set For The Mmpi With Heroin Addicts, Michael A. Glazer Oct 1978

Use Of A Modified Instruction Set For The Mmpi With Heroin Addicts, Michael A. Glazer

Psychology ETDs

The study proposes that experiences caused by direct drug action and the unusual pressures of obtaining the illegal drug heroin greatly affect heroin addict MMPI responding. These drug-related experiences confound MMPI profile data by introducing a variable not related to personality dynamics or personality traits. An associated confounding variable is the amount of time between cessation of heroin use and the administration of the MMPI. The longer this time period the less the effect of drug-related experiences upon MMPI responding, as the heroin addicts forget some of their drug-related experiences and respond as appropriate to their present life experiences. The …
