An Exploratory Investigation Comparing Battered And Non-Battered Women Using The Hand Test, Debra A. Dalton Jan 1981

An Exploratory Investigation Comparing Battered And Non-Battered Women Using The Hand Test, Debra A. Dalton

Masters Theses

The physical and mental abuse of women as wives and lovers is a largely unrecognized crime of violence just beginning to receive attention in the United States. The extent of wifebeating is difficult to determine since, although it occurs in every strata of society and every age group, it is underreported for a variety of reasons. The motives for wife abuse are complex. There are several social and psychological explanations that have been suggested as the underlying rationale for wifebeating. Psychological testing with battered women is rare and what testing that has been done has been limited to interviews and …

Job Satisfaction And Attitudes Of Professional Autonomy Among Community Hospital Staff Nurses, Michael Thomas Quinn Jan 1981

Job Satisfaction And Attitudes Of Professional Autonomy Among Community Hospital Staff Nurses, Michael Thomas Quinn

Masters Theses

The rapid rate of specialization within the health care field has affected the practice of nursing by demanding increased autonomy and professional identification among nurses. Past research has demonstrated that nurses' attitudes relevant to autonomous functioning and professional identification differ with the occupational role and setting in which the nurse works, with community hospital staff nurses being less likely than other nurses to endorse professionalism or autonomous functioning. The research has also demonstrated that the job turnover rate among hospital staff nurses is extremely high and that a large proportion of this turnover rate is directly related to job dissatisfaction. …

The Effects Of Religious Beliefs On Preferences Among Four Types Of Christian Counseling, Suzanne Ruth Gascoyne

Theses and Dissertations

Forty-five participants from Protestant denominations completed surveys designed to investigate the effects of religious beliefs on preferences among four types of Christian counseling. The proponents of the counseling theories were Clyde M. Narramore, Jay E. Adams, Lawrence J. Crabb, and Andre Bustanoby. Participants read a case history of a fictitious client, and four short treatment plans which represented each Christian counselor's approach. Then, they completed questionnaires designed to assess their preferences for the counseling approaches, as well as completing other measures, including a religious fundamentalism scale, the Religious Orientation Scale (ROS), and the Rokeach Value Survey (RVS). It was found …

Success Expectancy In Depressives, Marilyn Frances Barnowe-Meyer Jan 1981

Success Expectancy In Depressives, Marilyn Frances Barnowe-Meyer

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis was an attempt to investigate two important cognitive aspects of depression: expectation of success, and changes in this expectation. Recent studies in these areas have yielded inconsistent results. It has generally been concluded that subclinical depressives do not differ from nondepressives in initial expectation of success, though they do at times exhibit smaller changes in success expectancy following personal experiences of success or failure. Two main cognitive theories of depression have attempted to account for this difference between the two populations. Beck (1967) has proposed that depression results from specific negative cognitive processes, among them a denial of …

Comparison Of Scores Obtained On The Ppvt And The Ppvt-R, Jennie L.M. Choong Jan 1981

Comparison Of Scores Obtained On The Ppvt And The Ppvt-R, Jennie L.M. Choong

Dissertations and Theses

The Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT) is a widely used receptive vocabulary screening tool, but it is not without its limitations, such as inadvisable I.Q. usage and a standardization procedure that lacks scope. A revision of the PPVT, known as the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-Revised (PPVT-R) was published in 1981, and contains a more complete standardization procedure as well as some structural changes of the test itself (Dunn, 1981). Speech/language pathology, whose diagnosticians most commonly use the age equivalent value, is a profession that would gain from information which deals with the equivalency of the PPVT-R to the original PPVT. …

Mental Health Services For Ontario Correctional Clients, Benjamin Clyde Hoffman Jan 1981

Mental Health Services For Ontario Correctional Clients, Benjamin Clyde Hoffman

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Human services and program evaluation literature suggests that correctional policy must be formulated in the context of an Empirical Penology that begins with the data of corrections (Conrad, 1973; Newman and Price, 1977; Law Reform Commission of Canada, 1976). The Ontario Ministry of Correctional Services is currently involved in policy discussions concerning the future provision of mental health service to its clients. As part of its discussions, a Ministry Task Force is examining mental health service delivery models. However, standardized descriptive data of the existing client target population and the current service are not available. Comprehensive service evaluation are also …

A total of 35 individuals were interviewed, and 31 individuals were surveyed. The research approach is described and is supplemented by an explanation of the role of the researcher as a part of the setting. The researcher’s entry and effort to gain a sense of legitimation in the setting is …

Planning Ahead Before And During The Retirement Years: Its Relation To Life Satisfaction And Self-Concept Age For Retired Males, Mary Elizabeth Close Jan 1981

Planning Ahead Before And During The Retirement Years: Its Relation To Life Satisfaction And Self-Concept Age For Retired Males, Mary Elizabeth Close

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Forty retired males participated in interviews concerning amounts and types of planning before retirement and for the future, self-concept age, and life satisfaction. Twenty males who were 65 to 69 years of age were designated the “Newcomers” and twenty who were 70 to 75 years of age were designated the “Veterans.”

It was hypothesized that, as the amount of planning increased (None to Low to Medium to High), life satisfaction (L-SAT) would also increase to a maximal level after which it would decrease. Also, an inverted curved relationship was hypothesized for self-concept age in that, as self-concept age decreased, L-SAT …

The questionnaires tapped staff perceptions of the degree to which each of these …

The Treatments Of Child Abuse, Susan D. Haske Jan 1981

The Treatments Of Child Abuse, Susan D. Haske

Honors Theses

Child abuse is a major problem in our society today. It is the major killer of children in the Untied States. (Kalman, 1977) There are many different estimates of the rate of occurrence, and no one knows for sure how prevalent it is. The major problem with making estimates of incidence is that so many cases are never reported. Only 20-50% of the cases are reported. (Kempe, 1978)

There are three types of child abuse. (Roth, 1975) One type is situational. This type is in response to an overwhelming stress. It usually happens one time, and is the easiest to …
