Youth Stress, Support, Coping Skills And Depression: Developing A Model For Primary Prevention In The High Schools, M. Jill Somerville Jan 1991

Youth Stress, Support, Coping Skills And Depression: Developing A Model For Primary Prevention In The High Schools, M. Jill Somerville

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This study examined the needs and resources of Galt Collegiate Institute and the City of Cambridge in order to develop a primary prevention program for adolescent stress, support, and coping skills. Two hundred and ten high school students (grade 9 to OAC) completed an adolescent experiences questionnaire including measures on daily hassles, social support, coping skills, depression, and affect. As well, ten individuals from the community completed an interview focusing on program ideas and available resources. Multiple regression analyses of the student data revealed that hassles were directly related to negative affect and depression, and coping skills were directly related …

Depressive Deficits In Memory: Focusing Attention Improves Subsequent Recall, Paula T. Hertel, S. S. Rude Jan 1991

Depressive Deficits In Memory: Focusing Attention Improves Subsequent Recall, Paula T. Hertel, S. S. Rude

Psychology Faculty Research

58 Ss (aged up to 55 yrs) diagnosed as depressed, recovered from depression, or without a history of depression performed an unintentional learning task, followed by tests of free and forced recall. In the learning task, Ss decided whether a series of nouns sensibly completed corresponding sentence frames that varied in decision difficulty. For half of the Ss, the focus of attention was unconstrained by the demands of this task. The others, however, were required to repeat the targeted noun at the end of the trial as a means of focusing their attention on the task. Depressed Ss in the …

Recalling In A State Of Natural Or Experimental Depression, Paula T. Hertel, S. S. Rude Jan 1991

Recalling In A State Of Natural Or Experimental Depression, Paula T. Hertel, S. S. Rude

Psychology Faculty Research

In three experiments we attempted to extend the cognitive-effort account of depressive deficits in memory to naturally depressed college students. This account maintains that depression reduces attentional resources, thereby impairing performance on demanding tasks, and has received support through experimental inductions of depressed moods. Nondepressed, naturally depressed, and (in Experiment 2) experimentally depressed college students performed unannounced tests of free recall following learning tasks with two levels of difficulty and (in Experiment 2) two degrees of structure. In Experiments 1 and 2 we measured cognitive effort on those tasks via latencies on a secondary task. Latencies and subsequent recall increased …

Dimensions Of Functional Social Support And Psychological Symptoms, Irvin Sam Schonfeld Jan 1991

Dimensions Of Functional Social Support And Psychological Symptoms, Irvin Sam Schonfeld

Publications and Research

In the summer following graduation a sample of 125 female college graduates (mean age = 28) completed Cohen & Wills' ISEL (1985) which includes scales measuring four social support functions: belonging (social companionship), appraisal (availability of confidants), tangible (instrumental), and self-esteem support. In the summer and fall subject status on two outcome scales was ascertained: the Psychophysiologic Symptom Scale and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). Reliability of the difference scores suggested that the ISEL scales do not measure entirely different constructs and the ISEL Self-esteem Scale is operationally redundant with the Rosenberg Self-esteem scale and the CES-D. …

The First Two Years Of Woolwich Community Health Centre: Program And Project Evaluations, Corrine W. Johnston

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Community health centres were set up to aid in combatting the accelerating rate of spending in health services, to encourage a shift from the present emphasis on acute hospital in-patient care to other forms of health care, and to more fully reflect the objectives and priorities of illness-prevention and health promotion, and community-based care. Broadly, the purpose of this thesis was to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of a new health centre—Woolwich Community Health Centre. Specifically, the evaluation assessed health promotion and illness prevention programs implemented by the staff of the health centre, client empowerment and client satisfaction with the health …

Christianity And Cognitive Therapy (Chapter 3 Of Cognitive Therapy Techniques In Christian Counseling), Mark R. Mcminn Jan 1991

Christianity And Cognitive Therapy (Chapter 3 Of Cognitive Therapy Techniques In Christian Counseling), Mark R. Mcminn

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

LEN NERVOUSLY EYED THE DIPLOMAS on the wall, the titles on the bookshelf, and the wilted leaves on the plant I routinely neglect before telling me why he came for help. "I guess I'm here because you're a Christian and I need help dealing with my feelings ." Within this first thirty seconds of therapy, Len had revealed some important information about himself. He was nervous. He wanted to talk with a Christian, probably because he was also a Christian. He was troubled with uncomfortable - feelings, but wanted to be selective about the help he received. Len, like so …

Religious Values, Sexist Language, And Perceptions Of A Therapist, Mark R. Mcminn Jan 1991

Religious Values, Sexist Language, And Perceptions Of A Therapist, Mark R. Mcminn

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

This study investigated the effects of emphasizing religious values above clinical skills and the effects of sexist language on therapist perception. One hundred fifteen adults in a continuing education program completed a questionnaire after reading one of four possible quotes allegedly from a psychotherapist. Those quotes emphasizing religious values over clinical skills produced higher ratings of likability, trustworthiness, and approachability in the therapist. However, there was an interaction effect with those who were nonreligious preferring the therapist who valued clinical ski lls above religious values. No significant effects were found between groups reading quotes with and without sexist language. Implications …

Perceptual And Cognitive Abnormality Model Of Hypochondriasis: Psychological Correlates Of Amplification And Misinterpretation, James R. Craft Jan 1991

Perceptual And Cognitive Abnormality Model Of Hypochondriasis: Psychological Correlates Of Amplification And Misinterpretation, James R. Craft

Theses and Dissertations

Hypochondriasis is a disorder that may affect ten percent of all individuals seeking medical care. This places a great burden on the health care resources that are currently available. Unfortunately, very few of these individuals come to the attention of mental health professionals.

Various models have attempted to conceptualize hypochondriasis. These include the psychiatric model, the psychodynamic model, the social learning and the perceptual or cognitive abnormality model.

The perceptual or cognitive abnormality model suggests that individuals who are hypochondriacal misinterpret and/or amplify normal bodily sensations. These processes lead the individuals to believe they are suffering from a serious disease. …

Development Of A Measure Of Therapist Trustworthiness, Gregory M. Alberts Jan 1991

Development Of A Measure Of Therapist Trustworthiness, Gregory M. Alberts

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Graduate and professional therapist training programs emphasize the acquisition of technical skills (Stevenson & Norcross, 1987) and deemphasize the promotion of interpersonal and relationship competencies (Lambert, 1989; Schiffman, 1987 ) . The content of such training programs and the procedures by which the competencies of prospective mental health practitioners are developed and evaluated have been critic ized because neither are based on an adequate fund of clinically relevant empirical knowledge (Ford, 1979; Garfield, 1977; Matarazzo, 1978; Ponterotto & Furlong, 1985; Scofield & Yoxtheimer, 1983).

[Introduction To] Handbook Of Social And Clinical Psychology: The Health Perspective, C. R. Snyder, Donelson R. Forsyth Jan 1991

[Introduction To] Handbook Of Social And Clinical Psychology: The Health Perspective, C. R. Snyder, Donelson R. Forsyth

Bookshelf

From 1988 to 1991 Donelson R. Forsyth worked with C.R. Snyder and many other experts in the field of social and clinical psychology, editing a handbook that--at that time--summarized ongoing efforts in what was known as the social-clinical interface. This interface recognized the growing interdependency of these two fields. Up to that time social psychologists were mostly preoccupied with the study of the interpersonal determinants of thought, feeling, and action. Their work was primarily theoretically driven, the behaviors they sought to explain were the sort that occurred in everyday settings, and they preferred to test their hypotheses through laboratory experimentation. …

Relationship Among Type A Behavior Pattern, Hostility, And Uncontrollable Event In A College-Aged Population, Marna Elyea Burns Jan 1991

Relationship Among Type A Behavior Pattern, Hostility, And Uncontrollable Event In A College-Aged Population, Marna Elyea Burns

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

Seventy-two male college students classified as Type A or Type B on the basis of scores on the Jenkins Activity Survey - Form T (JAS-T) were given the Cook and Medley Hostility Scale and divided into four groups on the basis of test scores: A/High Hostile; A/Low Hostile; B/High Hostile; and, B/Low Hostile. Subjects were then randomly assigned to either Group I: Controllable Event or Group II: Uncontrollable Event. Pre- and post-experimental one-minute time estimates and pre- and post-experimental one-minute key tapping sessions were recorded for all subjects. During the experimental condition, subjects in Group I: Controllable Event estimated a …

The Effects Of Wellness Activity Choices On Urban Employees' Psychological Mood States And Job Satisfaction, Ruth Porter Holland Jan 1991

The Effects Of Wellness Activity Choices On Urban Employees' Psychological Mood States And Job Satisfaction, Ruth Porter Holland

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education

This ex-post-facto study was designed to examine the effects of varied levels of physical activity participation choices on employees' mood states and job satisfaction. A six (group) x two (sex) x three (times) ANCOVA method analyzed the relationship of three independent variables (group, sex and repeated exercise sessions) to ten dependent psychological measures (seven mood states and three job satisfaction components). Comparisons by group, sex, and time were made to determine whether four treatment groups of male and female employees who made choices to participate in varied levels of physical activity over an eight week period differed significantly from two …

Psychosocial Developmental Levels Of Freshman Urban University Students With Learning Disabilities, Nancy Ann Wolthuis Olthoff Jan 1991

Psychosocial Developmental Levels Of Freshman Urban University Students With Learning Disabilities, Nancy Ann Wolthuis Olthoff

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education

This research study addressed the question, "Is there a difference in psychosocial developmental levels, as defined by Arthur Chickering, between male and female traditional-aged urban university freshmen with and without learning disabilities?" Twenty students with learning disabilities, as diagnosed by independent practitioners who exhibited spelling disabilities on a writing sample placement test, were compared to two comparable groups of twenty students. One comparison group did not exhibit spelling disability. The second group while demonstrating spelling problems, did not have documentation of learning disabilities. The Student Developmental Task and Lifestyle Inventory, a measure of Arthur Chickering's theory of psychosocial development, was …

Performance was evaluated with a 2 (Training) x 3 (Feedback) x 2 (In-Basket) x 5 (Dimension) repeated measures factorial design. Reactions were evaluated with a 2 (Training) x 3 (Feedback) x 2 (Questionnaire) repeated measures factorial design. The Training factor was comprised of frame-of-reference training (designed to prepare the recipient to receive the feedback) and a control condition (a lecture on Mintzberg's managerial role classification system). The Feedback factor was comprised of written feedback, oral feedback, …

Effects Of Race And Socio-Economic Status On Children’S Food Preferences, Reginald M. Chandler Jan 1991

Effects Of Race And Socio-Economic Status On Children’S Food Preferences, Reginald M. Chandler

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effects of race and socio-economic status on children's food preferences. Twenty-four obese and 43 non-obese young children (mean age 5.3 years) looked at an array of pictures of food and selected the pictures of items with which he/she would like to make a lunch. The mothers of the children were escorted into the room after the children had left the room and were instructed to modify, if they wish, their child's food selections. The mothers were also told that the modification of their child's selections should reflect a lunch they …

Effects Of Employment-At-Will Policies On Corporate Image, Job Pursuit Intentions, & Union Membership Intentions, Susan Walker Dec 1990

Effects Of Employment-At-Will Policies On Corporate Image, Job Pursuit Intentions, & Union Membership Intentions, Susan Walker

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Since 1884, the courts have embraced and applied the doctrine of employment-at-will which states that employers may terminate their employees, with or without cause or notice, at any time. Recently, the courts have recognized exceptions to this doctrine. In order to avoid these exceptions, lawyers and human resource specialists have suggested that employment materials should explicitly state that all employment is at-will. However, while stating an employment-at-will policy may protect employers' rights to terminate at-will, little is known about the consequences of adopting these measures with respect to applicant and employee attitudes.

The concept of employment-at-will is explored and research …

Temperature And Pain Changes Resulting From Post Surgical (Arthroscopy) Application Of Cold Packs, Caroline L. Creager Dec 1990

Temperature And Pain Changes Resulting From Post Surgical (Arthroscopy) Application Of Cold Packs, Caroline L. Creager

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Post-surgical cold applications are beneficial to orthopedic surgery patients. However, their use is limited because of the difficulty in maintaining a constant temperature, increased need for attention, and unwanted leaks or condensation from ice bags. Twenty-one arthroscopic surgery patients were divided into three groups: a Dura*Kold cold pack group, an Aircast Cryo/cuff compression dressing group, and a control group. Six dependent variables were examined: subjective pain ratings three and 48 hours after surgery, a subjective rating of functional activity 48 hours after surgery, skin temperature for three hours after surgery, and pain medication consumed during three hours and 48 hours …

Applying The Matching Law In A Sheltered Workshop, Kristin Elizabeth Skousgard Dec 1990

Applying The Matching Law In A Sheltered Workshop, Kristin Elizabeth Skousgard

Masters Theses

This study assessed the validity of the matching law in an applied setting. It manipulated extraneous reinforcement and measured the rate of rocking in a 24-year-old developmentally disabled man. The resulting data were compared to that predicted by the matching law.

The results were important in three ways: (1) extraneous reinforcement systematically affected rocking in an applied setting in the manner predicted by the matching law, (2) a clinically undesirable behavior decreased in frequency, and (3) this decrease occurred in the absence of direct intervention on the target behavior. Thus, to a slight degree, scientific, practical and humanitarian goals were …

Evaluating The States Of Mind Model: Comparison To An Alternative Model And Effects Of Method Of Cognitive Assessment, Richard G. Heimberg, Monroe A. Bruch, Debra A. Hope, Mark Dombeck Dec 1990

Evaluating The States Of Mind Model: Comparison To An Alternative Model And Effects Of Method Of Cognitive Assessment, Richard G. Heimberg, Monroe A. Bruch, Debra A. Hope, Mark Dombeck

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Two studies were conducted evaluating aspects of the States of Mind (SOM) Model proposed by Schwartz (1986; Schwartz & Garamoni, 1986, 1989) with a sample of social phobic subjects. First, the SOM ratio [positive thoughts/(positive + negative thoughts)] based on a thought-listing task was compared to a ratio based on Kendall and Hollon’s (1981) “power-of-nonnegative-thinking” model [negative thoughts/(positive + negative + neutral thoughts)], and the relationship of each ratio to criterion measures was assessed. The two ratios were highly correlated and related to several criterion measures, raising questions about the role of neutral thoughts in the internal dialogue. Second, SOM …
