Beliefs About The Prevalence Of Dissociative Identity Disorder, Sexual Abuse, And Ritual Abuse Among Religious And Nonreligious Therapists, Mark R. Mcminn, Nathaniel G. Wade
Beliefs About The Prevalence Of Dissociative Identity Disorder, Sexual Abuse, And Ritual Abuse Among Religious And Nonreligious Therapists, Mark R. Mcminn, Nathaniel G. Wade
Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program
Four hundred ninety-seven Christian therapists and 100 membe.rs of the American Psychological Association returned questionnaires indicating the prevalence of dissociative identity disorder (DID) . sexual abuse, and ritual abuse in their clinical practices. There was a low rate of diagnosing DID and ritual abuse among all respondents. Christian pSychologists were slightly more likely to diagnose ritual abuse than other psychologists, but they were no more likely to diagnose DID or sexual abuse. No differences were observed in diagnosing ritual abuse or DID between Christian psychologists, other licensed Christian therapists, non licensed Christian therapists, and lay counselors. Licensed Christian therapists who …
Religious Orientation, Guilt, Confession, And Forgiveness, Katheryn Rhoads Meek, Jeanne S. Albright, Mark R. Mcminn
Religious Orientation, Guilt, Confession, And Forgiveness, Katheryn Rhoads Meek, Jeanne S. Albright, Mark R. Mcminn
Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program
Religious orientation and psychological functioning were investigated in an analog study with 83 participants. After completing the Religious Orientation Scale (Allport & Ross, 1967), participants read a continuous narrative with three scenarios in which they first committed a dishonest act, and then felt compelled to confess what they had done. The final scenario contained a manipulation of grace or no-grace, in which half of the participants were forgiven for their act and half were not. Following each scenario, participants were tested for feelings of guilt and related behavioral and emotional responses. Intrinsically religious participants were more prone to guilt, more …
How Do Actors And Actresses Age?: Self-Monitoring And Aging, Barbara A. Bowman
How Do Actors And Actresses Age?: Self-Monitoring And Aging, Barbara A. Bowman
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study investigates the relationship between life events, self-monitoring, and aging. This relationship is explored in the following five areas: religious practices, social networks, intergenerational relationships, retirement, and leisure. It was hypothesized that, compared to low self-monitors, high self-monitors would (a) spend less time in private devotional activities as they age, (b) feel a heavier impact from the reduction in the quantity of social networks, (c) have more distant intergenerational ties, (d) adjust to forced retirement more quickly, and ( e) be less satisfied with leisure time as they age. The 120 volunteer participants ranged in age from 51 through …

The Psychological Effects Of Functional Electrical Stimulation Leg Cycle Ergometry On Persons With Spinal Cord Injury, Renee Christner, Scott Nolte
The Psychological Effects Of Functional Electrical Stimulation Leg Cycle Ergometry On Persons With Spinal Cord Injury, Renee Christner, Scott Nolte
Masters Theses
Major depressive disorder (MDD) affects many individuals in the general population. Spinal cord injury (SCI) may exacerbate depressive symptoms as individuals must adapt to an altered lifestyle as a result of the injury. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Functional Electrical Stimulation Leg Cycle Ergometry (FES-LCE) on the subjective reports of the incidence and severity of symptoms of depression in individuals with SCI. Survey packets, including a demographic data sheet and the Inventory to Diagnose Depression (IDD), were mailed to 215 individuals participating in FES-LCE programs and 215 persons with SCI not involved in FES-LCE. …

Visual Attention Differences Across The Lifespan: A Study Of Inhibition, Emily H. Cointin '95
Visual Attention Differences Across The Lifespan: A Study Of Inhibition, Emily H. Cointin '95
Honors Projects
In 1980, Treisman and Gelade proposed a two stage process of attention. According to the Feature Integration Theory, information is first processed automatically through feature extraction while integration of these features occurs later. Feature extraction is a parallel process and therefore automatic while feature integration is a serial process and thus requires attention. Because of the attentional nature of Treisman's theory, it has often been used as a paradigm for studies on attention and inhibition. The theory has also been used to highlight differences in cognitive abilities at various levels of development. In particular, it has been used to demonstrate …
Long-Term Effectiveness Of Combined Alprazolam And Cognitive-Behavioral Therapies In Panic Disorder, Steven M. Bond '95
Long-Term Effectiveness Of Combined Alprazolam And Cognitive-Behavioral Therapies In Panic Disorder, Steven M. Bond '95
Honors Projects
Benzodiazepines, particularly alprazolam, have been shown to be effective in the acute treatment of panic disorders. Difficult withdrawl and high relapse rates after successful discontinuation continue to be problems with this class of medication. Recent studies instituting cognitive-behavioral therapy as a treatment supplement to alprazolam taper have shown promising results out to one year follow-up. The present study investigated whether that combined treatment results in long-term improvement.
Justifications Of Intentional Aggression In Sport, Joseph Kwame Mintah
Justifications Of Intentional Aggression In Sport, Joseph Kwame Mintah
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which athletes in selected contact and semi-contact sports commit intentional acts of violence during competition. A second purpose was to determine how athletes justify or rationalize the use of intentional violent behavior. The subjects (N = 85) for this study were all male athletes from one mid-western University (age 18-42): football athletes (n = 31), basketball athletes (n = 12), wrestling athletes (n = 14) and soccer athletes (n = 28). Subjects responded to a modified form of the Bredemeier Athletic Aggression Inventory (BAAGI) and a researcher generated questionnaire …
Development And Initial Psychometric Properties Of The Adolescent Reasons For Living Inventory (Arfl), Tricia M. Besett
Development And Initial Psychometric Properties Of The Adolescent Reasons For Living Inventory (Arfl), Tricia M. Besett
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The purpose of this study was to develop a self-report measure for assessing adolescent suicidal behavior. This measure, the Adolescent Reasons For Living (ARFL), was modeled after the adult Reasons For Living Inventory (RFL) developed by Linehan, Goodstein, Nielsen, and Chiles (1983). Psychiatric inpatients, high school students, and college undergraduates were participants in this study. The development of the new measure closely followed the guidelines offered by DeVellis (1991) for designing new measures. The final version of the ARFL contained 35 items that loaded on six factors. The coefficients alpha were high and satisfactory. Significant differences were found between the …

The Effect Of Self-Care Information On Intentions To Engage In Preventive Health Behaviors Of Healthy And Ill College Students, Barbara Jane Houle
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether health condition affects the impact self-care information has on intentions to engage in preventive health behaviors. The concept of creating a "teachable moment" toward selfcare information based on health condition was also investigated. The theoretical model used in the study was the Health Belief Model (HBM). Participants (N = 202) were recruited from a health center at a midwestern university. The intervention used in the study was a self-care booklet. Participants were randomly assigned to either receive an envelope containing survey materials plus a self-care booklet and information sheet (n …
Attachment Theory And Self-Disclosure Of Hiv Status, Amy H. Grimshaw
Attachment Theory And Self-Disclosure Of Hiv Status, Amy H. Grimshaw
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
This study examined the influence of attachment style on self-disclosure of HIV seropositive status. Subjects were classified according to Bartholomew's model of adult attachment (i.e., secure, preoccupied, fearful, or dismissing). Steps were then taken to assess differences in the subjects' willingness to disclose their HIV seropositive status, the communication style chosen for disclosure, the subjects' perceptions of the importance of disclosing their HIV seropositive status, and the feared negative consequences of disclosure. To increase generalizability subjects were asked to assess their self-disclosure to three types of target persons: lover, same-sex friend, and opposite-sex friend. Attachment style significantly affected perceived importance …
Differences In Attitudes About Amphetamine Held By Adolescents Who Do And Do Not Intend To Use The Drug, K. Davies
Theses : Honours
An SEU measure was constructed to test the relationships between adolescents' combined expectations and values of possible outcomes of amphetamine use and intention to use the drug. The structure of the measure was then examined using Principal Components Analysis. Two orthogonal subscales were identified representing desires for the positive outcomes and fears of negative outcomes. Tukey's HSD analysis of pairwise means indicated that the two subscales were differentially effective in distinguishing participants with high, moderate and low levels of intention to use amphetamine. Participants with high levels of intention differed significantly from participants with low or moderate intention in their …

Exploring Young Children's Knowledge Of Their Social Network, Their Social Competence, And Links To Their Social Behaviour, Natalie C. Leitao
Theses : Honours
The primary focus of this study is to explore young children's knowledge of their social network and their social competence and the links with their social behaviour. The secondary focus is to investigate ways in which young children may be helped to articulate such knowledge. The six participants were pairs of five-year old children selected from three pre-primary classes located in a common school. Each pair comprised a socially able and a less socially able child as selected by their class teacher. Self-reports, dialogue-interviews, video-taped vignettes and dolls were used to help the participants talk about their knowledge of their …
Self And (M)Other In Patrick White's Fiction : An Object Relations Approach, Mary C. Lloyd Da Silva
Self And (M)Other In Patrick White's Fiction : An Object Relations Approach, Mary C. Lloyd Da Silva
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This thesis offers a new interpretation of Patrick White's novels, using Object Relations psychology. Object Relations psychology differs from Freudian psychology in that it shifts the focus of attention from notions of the Oedipal conflict and repression to issues of nurturing and relationships. This study charts the development of the Whitean protagonist across a selection of novels. The focus of my thesis is White's developing protagonist, and no attempt is made to offer a psychological profile of Patrick White himself. The thesis first surveys a representative sampling of existing critical material. It then defines the theoretical framework of the study …
The Effects On Memory And Self-Reported Behaviour Of Four Types Of Information About Water Conservation, Brigit A. Cosgrove
The Effects On Memory And Self-Reported Behaviour Of Four Types Of Information About Water Conservation, Brigit A. Cosgrove
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Education campaigns conducted by water management agencies are intended to motivate people to conserve water. However, there has been little research to determine what kind of information best achieves this goal. Four types of information partly based on Stem, Dietz and Kalof's (1993) social-psychological model of environmental value orientations were examined in this study: action information about ways to conserve water; abstract factual information about water and its use; anthropocentric information about how people are affected by water use; and ecocentric information about how the environment is affected by water use. Using cluster sampling techniques 160 participants were selected from …
The Social Construction Of Masculinity As It Relates To Sport: An Investigation Into The Lives Of Elite Level Athletes Competing In Individually-Oriented Masculinised Sports, Murray Drummond
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Sport has long been regarded as a masculine domain. In the past the literature has tended to focus on male athletes with respect to sensational or noteworthy performances, however little attention has been placed on the reasons why men participate in sport and the subsequent underpinning sociological implications of masculinity. This research investigated the lives of 12 elite level athletes competing in the three individually-oriented sports of triathlon, surf lifesaving and bodybuilding to attain a more comprehensive understanding of the relationship between male identity and sport, and the process of masculinisation experienced by men throughout the lifecourse. Further, it explored …
Development Of A Measure Of Homosexual Stress: A Factor-Analytic Approach, Lynn Marie Morris
Development Of A Measure Of Homosexual Stress: A Factor-Analytic Approach, Lynn Marie Morris
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Although homosexual stress has been studied in the past, an examination of the literature indicated a need for a reliable and valid measure of this construct. The current study describes the creation and validation of the Homosexual Stress Inventory (HSI), a new measure for I} stressors specific to homosexual men and women. A 70-item measure was created and factor analyzed. For the female subjects, 50 of the original items were retained and four factors emerged, which were labeled Visibility, Family, Work Discrimination, and Violence and Harassment. Among lesbians, homosexual stress seems to be related to more depression, to less social …

The Relationships Among Competitiveness, Age And Ability In Distance Runners, Robert C. Eklund, Jeffrey J. Martin, Alan L. Smith
Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies
The purpose of this study was to examine relationships suggested by general achievement motivation literature and the popular literature in sport using the Sport Orientation Questionnaire (SOQ). The current study examined if faster runners are more competitive than slower runners, if older athletes were less competitive than younger athletes, and if faster runners were more goal oriented than slower runners. Distance runners (n=80), ranging from 10 to 61 years old completed race packets containing a cover letter, consent forms, the SOQ and a demographic questionnaire. Runners averaged 32.9 years of age and reported levels of competitiveness and goal …

Destructive Hostility: The Jeffrey Dahmer Case: A Psychiatric And Forensic Study Of A Serial Killer, Jeffrey Jentzen, George Palermo, L. Thomas Johnson, Khang-Cheng Ho, K. Alan Stormo, John Teggatz
School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications
We were involved as forensic experts in the case of the serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. We discuss the scene and victim autopsy findings, with a brief consideration of the basic emotion of hostility. These findings support the thesis that at the basis of this serial killer's behavior were primary unconscious feelings of hate that he had channeled into a sadistic programmed destruction of 17 young men. The interview of the serial killer, the photographic scene documentation, and the autopsy findings stress the ambivalent homosexuality of the killer, his sexual sadism, his obsessive fetishism, and his possible cannibalism and necrophilia.
Personality Variables In Weeping Propensity, Michelle C. Lamb
Personality Variables In Weeping Propensity, Michelle C. Lamb
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Until recently, few empirical studies have explored crying reactivity in normal adults. The present study investigated adult weeping by first developing the Weeping Propensity Scale (WPS) and then by comparing scores on that scale to traits which had been hypothesized to be related to weeping propensity. The WPS is a self-report, 22 item, Likert-type scale designed to measure an individual's tendency to react to emotional stimuli with tears. Factor analysis results and internal consistency are reported for the WPS. In order to investigate traits hypothesized to be related to the WPS, 173 university students completed the WPS, the Questionnaire Measure …

The Effects Of A Problem-Solving And Imagery-Based Suggestion On Analgesic Responding In Low, Medium, And High Hypnotizable Females, Gloria Haddad Taggett
Dissertations
This study assessed the effects of a problem-solving suggestion as compared with an imagery-based suggestion on analgesic responding in subjects scoring in the low, medium, and high ranges on scales of hypnotizability. Subjects were exposed at separate intervals to either an hypnotic suggestion patter containing specific imagery designed to enhance analgesic performance, or alternatively to a suggestion patter that provided only general problem-solving direction, but contained no specific imaginal guidance. Performance was assessed using two duration measures on a cold-pressor test. Specific measures included both the total time duration a subject held the target hand in cold water (tolerance) as …
Hiv Prevention And Heterosexual College Students: The Impact Of Video Instruction On The "Safer" Sexual Behaviors Of Sexually Active Men, Cheryl L. Knight
Hiv Prevention And Heterosexual College Students: The Impact Of Video Instruction On The "Safer" Sexual Behaviors Of Sexually Active Men, Cheryl L. Knight
Dissertations
Despite increasing evidence of the heterosexual transmission of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) among young adults, research with college students has been primarily restricted to descriptions of the levels of risky behavior and the correlates of that behavior. To date, few experimentally validated HIV prevention programs have been reported. Furthermore, the existing experimental investigations have seldom based an intervention on a thorough analysis of the barriers to the practice of safer sex.
Experiment One surveyed 195 heterosexual college students to assess HIV risk factors, including sexual behavior, risk perception, knowledge and 10 barriers to the consistent practice of "safer" sex. …
