Examination Of Awareness And Frequency Of Behavioral Masking/Camouflaging Based On Life Experiences, Elizabeth M. Smith
Examination Of Awareness And Frequency Of Behavioral Masking/Camouflaging Based On Life Experiences, Elizabeth M. Smith
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Camouflaging behaviors are typically employed by individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to appear more in line with societal norms and avoid social ostracization. This study examined the connections between camouflaging and theatre experience, mental health diagnostic status, and levels of self-monitoring. In the study, participants completed a brief, 30- minute survey online examining camouflaging, autistic traits, self-monitoring, and life experiences across individuals of different age ranges. All participants were 18 years of age or older, completed a consent form, and received a debriefing. All responses were completely anonymous. The results showed significantly higher levels of camouflaging behaviors in participants …

Widowed And Wounded? Exploring The Health Impacts Of Adverse Childhood Experiences In Later Life Widowhood, Sierra Wickline
Widowed And Wounded? Exploring The Health Impacts Of Adverse Childhood Experiences In Later Life Widowhood, Sierra Wickline
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Losing a spouse is considered one of the most stressful life events that disproportionately affect older individuals. Exposure to traumatic events at an early age can change the body’s response to subsequent stressors across the lifespan. These physical changes often impact people’s health. Utilizing data from the Health and Retirement Study, the current study aimed to investigate the link between: adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and three indicators of health: inflammation (i.e., c-reactive protein [CRP], reflecting immune functioning), as well as self-reported depressive symptoms and physical health, among people who have lost a spouse. Participants included 97 widowed individuals aged 68 …
Effects Of Pressure-Based Virtual Reality Training On Mental Toughness In Athletes, Rylee J. Aspinwall
Effects Of Pressure-Based Virtual Reality Training On Mental Toughness In Athletes, Rylee J. Aspinwall
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Athletes often underperform in high-pressure situations due to challenges in emotional regulation rather than deficits in physical skill. Mental toughness, broadly defined as the ability to maintain performance under stress, is a key determinant of athletic success but remains difficult to train using traditional methods. Virtual reality (VR) offers a controlled and immersive environment for simulating competitive pressure; however, its application for training mental toughness remains limited. The present study examined the effects of pressure-based VR training on psychological and physiological responses in collegiate baseball and softball athletes. Participants completed up to eight VR training sessions under either high-pressure or …
Social Support, Trauma And Neurophysiological Stress, Devon S. Glicken
Social Support, Trauma And Neurophysiological Stress, Devon S. Glicken
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Traumatic life experiences and the prolonged effects of stress can negatively impact an individual’s mental and physical health. Hyperreactivity to acute stressors can often be seen in individuals with anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideations, conditions commonly observed with endocrine dysfunction. How do traumatic experiences, particularly experiences related to military affiliation, influence stress responses and feelings of burdensomeness and thwarted belongingness? This study predicted (1) that military-affiliated individuals (and those with PTSD symptomology and high perceived life stress) will have heightened neurophysiological responses to minor levels of acute stress compared to individuals without military-affiliations (and those without PTSD symptomology or high …

The Relationship Between Interoceptive Awareness And Eating Disorder Symptomatology, Madelyn G. Johnson
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Interoceptive awareness (IA; e.g., the ability to perceive and interpret internal bodily sensations) is increasingly recognized as central to eating disorder (ED) psychopathology, yet findings remain mixed regarding whether heightened IA is protective or maladaptive. Across two studies using a sample of 654 college students (Mage = 18.74, SD = 1.56; 46% White; 58% female) from a large northeastern U.S. university, we examined (1) how specific IA facets relate to ED symptom severity, and (2) whether anxiety sensitivity (AS) helps explain these associations. In Study 1, linear regressions predicting Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire–7 (EDE-Q7) scores showed that nearly all MAIA-2 …

Investigating A Mindfulness Curriculum And Prompting For Generalization On Overall Engagement Time, Caitlyn Ruggiero
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Mindfulness is a practice that has existed for centuries (Felver et al., 2022) and has been adapted to address various aspects of human life. Among the various uses of mindfulness practices, they have been adapted for use in school settings to support the use of adaptive learning behaviors in the classroom. For the target behavior to change in the natural setting, the student receiving intervention must be able to generalize the learned mindfulness skills to the classroom. The current study aimed to determine whether participation in the Soles of the Feet mindfulness intervention increased students’ overall engagement time (OET) in …

Providers' Perceptions Of Barriers And Facilitators To Implementing Non-Pharmacological Treatment For Adults With Chronic Pain: A Meta-Synthesis, Mikhaela Mcfarlin
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Background. Chronic pain is a public health concern impacting approximately 20% of adults in the U.S. Nonpharmacological interventions are considered first-line treatments for patients with chronic pain, yet nonpharmacological interventions remain significantly underutilized. While previous research has explored barriers from the patient’s perspective, limited attention has been paid to providers’ experiences implementing these treatments. This qualitative meta-synthesis aimed to examine provider-perceived barriers and facilitators to implementing nonpharmacolgical treatments for adults with chronic pain. Methods. Independent reviewers conducted systematic searches across PubMed, PsycInfo, CINAHL, and ProQuest Dissertations using relevant (e.g., “mental health provider”, “nonpharmacological”) and applied inclusion criteria to …

Improving Clinical Decision-Making: Reducing The Affect Heuristic In Substance Use Treatment, Corey M. Monley
Improving Clinical Decision-Making: Reducing The Affect Heuristic In Substance Use Treatment, Corey M. Monley
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Therapists are at risk for engaging in the affect heuristic, which occurs when automatic emotional reactions influence clinical decision-making more than objective data about clients. Emotional reactions are common when treating clients using substances (CUS), but the influence of the affect heuristic on therapists’ clinical decision-making with CUS has yet to be quantified. This study investigated (1) the extent to which therapist trainees engage in the affect heuristic with CUS and (2) whether it can be reduced through brief cognitive science training. Graduate-level therapists (n = 130) were randomized to one of two conditions: brief online training involving …
Paying The Price: How Financial And Health Stress Can Impact Incidental Memory In The Survival Processing Paradigm, Bailey C. Hall
Paying The Price: How Financial And Health Stress Can Impact Incidental Memory In The Survival Processing Paradigm, Bailey C. Hall
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Cognitive psychologists have examined how evolutionary pressures can shape memory systems and how survival-relevant information is processed. Nairne et al. (2007) established the survival processing paradigm and showed that processing information within a survival context reliably enhances later recall. Previous research has identified academic pressure and financial stress as the most influential stressors for undergraduate students (Patel & Lewis, 2023). Financial stress is widespread and influences multiple domains of life, including health behaviors and psychological well-being (Northern et al., 2010). In this study, two scenarios were created to explore financial and health stress compared to the original grassland survival scenario. …
Family Routines And Cognitive Emotion Regulation: The Role Of Harsh Parenting And Family Activities, Vidhi Jain
Family Routines And Cognitive Emotion Regulation: The Role Of Harsh Parenting And Family Activities, Vidhi Jain
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Cognitive emotion regulation (CER), consisting of adaptive and maladaptive strategies, is a critical developmental process linked to various well-being outcomes across the lifespan. Family contexts such as daily routines, parenting, and engagement shape the development of emotion regulation. Existing literature generally links family routines to better CER outcomes (Selman & Dilworth-Bart, 2023), but has not yet investigated the impact of routines in adverse family environments. The present study examined whether harsh parenting and the frequency of shared family activities jointly moderate the relationship between family routines and adaptive and maladaptive CER. A sample of emerging adults (N = 210; …
Weighing The Costs: Understanding How Eating Disorder History And Motivation For Use Impacts Experience On A Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonist And Interest In Future Use, Kimberly M. Gauert
Weighing The Costs: Understanding How Eating Disorder History And Motivation For Use Impacts Experience On A Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonist And Interest In Future Use, Kimberly M. Gauert
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1 RA) medications have become popular tools due to their effectiveness regarding weight loss and chronic disease management. The drastic increase in demand for these medications has led to widespread availability and an increase in “off-label” use for cosmetic purposes. Although GLP-1 RA medications have the potential to positively impact overall health and wellbeing, there is also concern regarding potential misuse of these medications by those with a history of eating disorder behaviors. However, few studies to date have examined the relationship between a history of eating disorder pathology, reason for GLP-1 RA use, and current …
Social Class Differences Between Client And Therapist: A Grounded Theory Study Of Working-Class Clients' Perspectives, Micah Herman
Social Class Differences Between Client And Therapist: A Grounded Theory Study Of Working-Class Clients' Perspectives, Micah Herman
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Although a substantial body of research highlights the importance of broaching differences related to race, ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation in psychotherapy, considerably less attention has been paid to social class, a dimension of socio-cultural identity that profoundly shapes individuals’ life circumstances, their sense of self, and their relationships with others. In recognition of our limited understanding of how working-class clients perceive and respond to class-based cultural differences between themselves and their therapists, the present grounded theory study addressed (1) how working-class clients experience and make meaning of social class differences in the therapeutic relationship and (2) what clients see …
Investigating The Effects Of Values Clarification And Self-Compassion On Mental Health Self-Stigma And Willingness To Seek Psychological Help, Sara V. White
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Mental health self-stigma, or the harmful beliefs that one holds about his or her mental illness, is associated with psychological distress and acts as a significant barrier to help-seeking. Yet, self-stigma is notoriously resistant to change when targeted directly. To address such concerns, the present study examined the effects of two brief writing interventions, self-compassion and values clarification relative to a control condition, in reducing self-stigma and improving willingness and intentionality to seek psychological help. Additionally, the present study also explored the contributions of two theoretically relevant mechanisms—state self-compassion and psychological (in)flexibility—on self-stigma, and whether resistance to self-compassion negatively impacted …
The Chemistry Of Red Lipstick: The Impact Red Lipstick Has On Society, Lilliana Weldeslassie
The Chemistry Of Red Lipstick: The Impact Red Lipstick Has On Society, Lilliana Weldeslassie
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Cosmetic chemistry is deeply embedded in everyday life, shaping the products people use from morning to night. Among these, red lipstick stands out as a formulation that blends complex chemistry with a cultural meaning. This thesis examines the scientific foundations of red lipstick through its chemical composition, pigment structure, toxicological history, analytical methods, and evolving sustainability practices. Historically, red lipsticks relied on high-risk ingredients such as lead, mercury, and other toxic metals, reflecting an era before chemical safety and regulatory oversight were incorporated.21 Modern formulations have established safer synthetic dyes, natural waxes, plant-based oils, and stabilizers created to optimize …
Academic Satisfaction Of Graduate Students In Mental Health Professions: Mediating Roles Of Burnout And Engagement, Yu Ying Li
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Academic satisfaction for students is as critical to their retention and well-being as job satisfaction for working adults; however, it has received limited empirical attention particularly among graduate students in mental health-related programs. One of the barriers to mental health trainees’ satisfaction with their academic training is burnout. The current study evaluated the applicability of Study Demands-Resources (SD-R) framework (Lesener et al., 2020) to trainees. Specifically, this study examined the relations between study demands (i.e., perceived stress), study resources (i.e., supervisory alliance and social support), student burnout, student engagement, and academic satisfaction. It also tested if student burnout and engagement …

Moderators Of Subjective Distress And State Body Image During Open And Blind Weighing, Danielle E. Peters
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Objective: Body image disturbances are central to eating disorder (ED) pathology and are often addressed through exposure-based methods, such as open weighing. Open weighing is recommended in evidence-based ED treatments, but many clinicians and patients prefer blind weighing. It may be that pre-treatment patient characteristics may influence how distressed they feel by open and blind weighing. As such, the present study aimed to 1) compare how open and blind weighing impact subjective distress and state body image, and 2) examine whether self-weighing tendencies, body avoidance, body checking, body checking-related beliefs, intolerance of uncertainty, and ED psychopathology moderate the relationship between …
Racial Bias In Collateral Report Of Adhd Symptom Endorsement, Teresa Mejia
Racial Bias In Collateral Report Of Adhd Symptom Endorsement, Teresa Mejia
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is the most frequently diagnosed mental health condition among children in the United States. However, prevalence rates in the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD are unequal across populations. Specifically, the literature has demonstrated consistent variability in symptom endorsements and diagnosis dependent on a child’s demographic factors (i.e., race, gender, age). A diagnosis of ADHD requires that the diagnostic criteria be met in at least two aspects of a child's life, usually the school and home environments. As such, teacher reports are commonly used in the assessment of ADHD for children and adolescents. Given the challenges in obtaining …

Becoming-With The Earth: Contemplative Practice As A Critical Onto-Epistemic Resource For Planetary Belonging, Care, And World-Making, Megan M. Fowler
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
In an era of accelerating planetary crisis, social work is called to reimagine its theories, methods, and practices beyond anthropocentric frameworks that separate human wellbeing from the health of the Earth and its resplendent living systems. Working in the space of transformative eco-social work, a growing chorus of voices contends that eco-centric responses require broadening the scope of health, welfare, justice, and care to extend beyond the human, to include the more-than-human world upon which all life intimately depends—understandings resonant with Indigenous and other relational knowledge systems long marginalized by colonialist-capitalist-modernity. Drawing from eco-feminist, eco-queer, decolonial, and post-anthropocentric lineages of …
A Moderated Mediation Analysis Of Mental Health Literacy, Personal Stigma, And Gender On Help-Seeking Intentions In College Students, Anna M. Gentile
A Moderated Mediation Analysis Of Mental Health Literacy, Personal Stigma, And Gender On Help-Seeking Intentions In College Students, Anna M. Gentile
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Although many college students experience mental health challenges, help-seeking rates remain disproportionately low relative to reported need (Abelson et al., 2022). Identifying factors that facilitate help-seeking is critical for improving access to mental health support in this population. Prior research has identified mental health literacy as a significant predictor of help-seeking behavior and intentions among college students (Gorczynski et al., 2017; Smith & Shochet, 2011), whereas personal stigma, which is defined as a person’s negative attitude towards people with mental health concerns (Griffiths et al., 2006), has been consistently associated with reduced help-seeking (Abelson et al., 2022). Grounded in the …
Perceptions Of Psilocybin-Assisted Psychotherapy And Standard Interventions For Nicotine Cessation, Philip Kamilar-Britt
Perceptions Of Psilocybin-Assisted Psychotherapy And Standard Interventions For Nicotine Cessation, Philip Kamilar-Britt
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Clinical trials suggest potential therapeutic utility of psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy (PAP) for nicotine cessation. In response to promising outcomes, research into PAP for nicotine dependence is growing. However, attitudes towards PAP among the general public, especially daily nicotine users, remains understudied. To address this knowledge gap, we recruited daily nicotine users (N=534) to complete an anonymous online survey with questions on demographics, nicotine use, prior history with psychedelics, and attitudes towards PAP and standard interventions for nicotine cessation. As hypothesized, daily nicotine users were more familiar with standard interventions and rated them more favorably than PAP. Despite differences in treatment attitudes, …

The Triple Dominance Measure (choosing between prosocial, individualistic, and competitive options) and the Slider Measure (“sliding” between various orientations, for example, from individualistic to prosocial) are two widely used techniques to measure social value orientation, that is, the weight individuals assign to own and others’ outcomes in interdependent situations. Surprisingly, there is only moderate correspondence between these measures, but it is unclear why and what the implications are for identifying individual differences in social value orientation. Using a dataset of 8021 participants from 31 countries and regions, this study revealed that the Slider Measure identified fewer competitors than the Triple …

How Autistic Children Define Novel And Real Words, Henry James Tomiser
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Word knowledge is highly valuable to Autistic individuals, and although much research has characterized Autistic children’s vocabulary breadth (i.e., the number of lexical entries), less attention has been paid to vocabulary depth (i.e., the richness with which one understands a given word). In this exploratory post-hoc study, 11 Autistic children (one assigned female at birth) participated in novel and real word learning paradigms in which child-friendly referents were paired with CVCV word forms. Participants were then asked to provide open-ended definitions of the words. Definitions were parsed into meaningful subunits, or semantic features. Semantic features were coded by type of …

Influence Of Parental Immigration On Children Of Latino Immigrants’ Attachment And Substance Use, Leilanis Cancel-Lopez
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This study aimed to explore how children of Latino immigrants described their attachment and substance use experiences. The narrative that formed implies that throughout their adolescence, children of Latino immigrants use substances in part to cope with their parents’ heightened expectations for the participants to perform well in school/work/life. Additional results find that children of Latino immigrants also form a sense of exoneration for their parents upon reaching young adulthood. Clinical implications include the use of a systemic perspective when approaching children of immigrants when treating substance use and the inclusion of this narrative when creating prevention strategies for immigrant …
