Personality Differences Between Talented High School Achievers And Underachievers, Martin Leroy Mini Jan 1960

Personality Differences Between Talented High School Achievers And Underachievers, Martin Leroy Mini

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Today, more than ever before, there is present an increasing emphasis on the part of educators to help the academically talented student develop his scholastic ability to its maximum level. Past experience has shown that there is a large number of talented students who are not achieving scholastically in terms of their apparent intellectual potentials. Research on the differences between achieving and underachieving talented students, has left unanswered many important questions concerned with this area of educational psychology.

A Program Of Correlation For The Sixth Grade Teachers Of India, Jagdish C. Goyal Jan 1960

A Program Of Correlation For The Sixth Grade Teachers Of India, Jagdish C. Goyal

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The people of India had long been dissatisfied with the educational program which existed prior to the Basic system of education. The traditional system which preceded Basic education originated with the Charter Act of 1813 of the East India Company of Britain. Only a relatively few persons benefited directly from this system; it never reached the masses. This policy of "downward infiltration" created some complex and unfavorable results. It is important to note in this connection a statement from the 1958 UNESCO world Survey of Education that "owing to defects in the official policies, the position of mass education in …

A Comparison Of The Revised Stanford-Binet Scale And The Terman-Mcnemar Test Of Mental Ability With Respect To The Prediction Of Scholastic Achievement, Sanford L. Mcdonald Jun 1959

A Comparison Of The Revised Stanford-Binet Scale And The Terman-Mcnemar Test Of Mental Ability With Respect To The Prediction Of Scholastic Achievement, Sanford L. Mcdonald

Student Work

Although more than fifty years have passed since the Frenchmen Alfred Binet and Theophile Simon published the first effective intelligence test, psychological testing has evolved through many stages since that time. There are many different types of psychological tests now, with numerous methods of interpretation. However, through all of this evolution the basic purpose of the tests has remained the same— to measure Individual differences. Just as Binet and Simon's first intelligence test ". . . succeeded in differentiating between children of various age and grade levels and made possible the prediction of the child's progress in school, so psychological …

Electrical Desiccation As A Method For Marking Functional Cortical Areas, Kenneth R. Earp

Psychology ETDs

The present study is concerned specifically with whether a means can be found to make a mark at the point where handedness has been localized by electrical stimulation without producing changes in that area sufficient to alter its functioning.

The Influence Of Error Density On Error Detection Efficiency, Edward A. Ahr Jan 1959

The Influence Of Error Density On Error Detection Efficiency, Edward A. Ahr

Psychology ETDs

Statement of the problem.—It was the purpose of this study (a) to investigate the effect of error density (level, rate, or number of errors) on checking efficiency in a proofreading situation under normal conditions, i.e., comfortable working conditions without stress; and (b) to investigate the effects of experience in detecting errors at one level of density on the detection of errors at a later time in which the density level has been changed. This would show if there is a relationship between signal detection and habituation as well as signal density, and would reflect the possible role of learning in …

The Effects On The Quality And Rate Of Cursive Writing Of A Seven Months Delay In Its Introduction In The Waterloo Schools, Mary Elizabeth Fredrikson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

It has been the policy in the Waterloo school system for the past sixteen years to make the transition from manuscript to cursive handwriting during the last six to eight weeks in second grade. The first part of third grade is spent in a review of the formation of the small and capital cursive letters. Cursive writing is taught throughout the remainder of third grade and used as the primary writing tool throughout the grades. The purpose of this study was to investigate how the quality and rate of cursive writing were affected by delaying the starting of instruction in …

An Analysis Of Relationships Among Ratings On Entrance Examinations And Academic Achievement In The College Of Engineering, University Of New Mexico, Elizabeth B. Thurston Jun 1958

An Analysis Of Relationships Among Ratings On Entrance Examinations And Academic Achievement In The College Of Engineering, University Of New Mexico, Elizabeth B. Thurston

Psychology ETDs

The purpose of this study is two-fold:

1. To determine relationships between academic success of students in the College of Engineering, University of New Mexico, and their standing in certain entrance examinations; and

2. To recommend cutting scores on the various tests which might be set as standards for admittance to the College of Engineering.

For the purpose of this study, no correlations were drawn between scores on these entrance examinations and grade point averages for university work. The criterion for validity for these tests in this case was not grade point averages, but simply the "succeed-fail" differential. Since a …

A Comparative Study Of Personality Adjustment Of Successful And Unsuccessful Readers, Marvin F. Daley Jun 1958

A Comparative Study Of Personality Adjustment Of Successful And Unsuccessful Readers, Marvin F. Daley

Psychology ETDs

The reading process may be considered essentially as a "complex but unitary psychological function". As such, it involves ideational, emotional, and motor aspects as well as the adaptations of the reader to the reading experience. Undoubtedly, of all phases of the school curriculum, the varied aspects and constituents of the reading process have been the most extensively investigated. Yet, the area concerning which least is known is the personality adjustment of the reader. This limitation of research was recognized by Gann over a decade ago, and is as true today as it was then.

An Exercise On The Level Of Aspiration For The Introductory Psychology Laboratory., Susan Williams Strange Jan 1958

An Exercise On The Level Of Aspiration For The Introductory Psychology Laboratory., Susan Williams Strange

Psychology ETDs

It is customary to have a laboratory concurrent with a science course. These laboratories presumably demonstrate the laws and principles of that science. This is done in several ways: by giving the students practical first-hand knowledge of the principles, by having them observe demonstrations or participate in them, by teaching them through “audio-visual aids”, and so on. But it is because certain problems are posed by the very nature of the laboratory. For example, time limits may prevent the completion of experiments or they may be too complicated for the beginning student to undertake.

A Personality Comparison Of Students Born In The Mormon Church And Those Who Have Been Converted, Grant Broadbent Smith Jan 1958

A Personality Comparison Of Students Born In The Mormon Church And Those Who Have Been Converted, Grant Broadbent Smith

Theses and Dissertations

The study of personality and its many facets is one of several significant areas in the field of psychology, which is being studied in detail. Personality, as a construct, is not often well defined and less often well understood, since it is a composite of such varied factors as perception, motivation, learning, culture and so on. Because of this present lack of clarity it must and will be discussed, written about, and experimented with until a clear, operant definition, acceptable to psychology, has been devised.

Group Counseling Of Junior High School Students With Certain Adjustment Problems, Urma Peterson English Jan 1958

Group Counseling Of Junior High School Students With Certain Adjustment Problems, Urma Peterson English

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Three years ago, when the writer first entered the Cedar Falls Junior High School as a classroom teacher, students who did not conform to school regulations were assigned to detention during the period following the regular school day. The policy was to assign each teacher to one week of detention duty on a rotating basis as part of the teaching load. It was apparent that the teachers considered the detention assign.ment among the least desirable of their duties. The primary objective of detention was to make the experience disagreeable enough that the students would conform to school regulations and remain …

The Degree Of Localization Of Function For Handedness In The Rat, Jeanne Rivoire Sep 1957

The Degree Of Localization Of Function For Handedness In The Rat, Jeanne Rivoire

Psychology ETDs

Statement of the problem. Peterson and Fracoral (1938) studied Localization of the handedness area in ambidextrous rate by the technique of the thermocautery destruction. By this process they were able to locate a small area for handedness, situated at approximately 250 microns posterior to the genu of the corpus callosum and lying directly over the caudate nucleus. Destruction of this area produced transfers of handedness in their rats.

However, this method of locating a specific structural area by finding a common area for a group of animals is at best relatively crude because of the variation in individual animals.

The …

An Evaluation Of The Accuracy Of Two Meter Calibration Procedures And The Readability Of A Variety Of Voltmeters, Dan A. Peterson Jun 1957

An Evaluation Of The Accuracy Of Two Meter Calibration Procedures And The Readability Of A Variety Of Voltmeters, Dan A. Peterson

Psychology ETDs

Statement of the problem. The purpose of the study was (1) to determine the comparative accuracy of two electronic meter calibration procedures, and (2) to evaluate the readability of a variety of voltmeters.

These were accomplished by the analysis of distributions of psychophysical errors and psychological mistakes which were produced by the undergraduate engineering students as they made specified voltage settings, read the various meter scales, and computed the resulting correction factors.

A Performance Analysis Of The Upper And Lower 20% Of A Senior High School Group Compared On Tests Of Interest, Personality And Achievement, Richard E. Jensen

Student Work

Since early civilization man has been faced with a multitude of situations demanding that he make a decision or choice on which a future course of action or behavior will be based. We might correctly assume that decisions made by people have never been of such simplicity that they created no tension.

Civilization has become progressively more complicated, and thus more alternatives are present from which a person must choose, In the earliest days of man’s existence, decisions were of the simplest and most fundamental nature, Man’s decisions and choices ware, for the most part, governed by a few biological …
