Transfer Of A Discrimination Along A Drug Stimulus Continuum., William Eugene Foote Jul 1974

Transfer Of A Discrimination Along A Drug Stimulus Continuum., William Eugene Foote

Psychology ETDs

The experiment was designed to demonstrate the transfer of a discrimination along an interoceptive stimulus continuum associated with changes in dose of Δ 9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ 9-THC), the major active ingredient in marihuana.

Two groups of ten male albino rats were trained on a two-bar, simultaneous choice discrimination. The prior administration of a high or a low dose of Δ 9-thcc indicated reinforcement availability on the right or left bar respectively. All drug injections were given by the I. P. route two hours before the discrimination session. Each daily session began with a variable period of extinction followed by a period …

Effects Of Complexity, Incongruity And Content On Cartoon Humor Appreciation., Robert Goodkind Jul 1974

Effects Of Complexity, Incongruity And Content On Cartoon Humor Appreciation., Robert Goodkind

Psychology ETDs

Jerry M. Suls proposed an information processing model for the understanding of cartoon humor. The model describes two processes involved in humor appreciation: recognizing the incongruity (the "incongruity" variable), and finding a logical explanation or solution to the incongruity (the "complexity" variable). Suls states that there are no other operative variables in cartoon humor appreciation besides these two. The implication of this is that cartoon content should have no effect on humor c1ppreciation when incongruity arid complexity are controlled. The present study was a test of Suls' model. Cartoons previously rated for incongruity, complexity, hostile content and sexual content were …

Impact Of College Speech Classes On Listening Skills Of Students, Candice Piazza May 1974

Impact Of College Speech Classes On Listening Skills Of Students, Candice Piazza

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of college speech classes upon developing improved listening skills. More specifically it sought to determine the extent to which the students who took Speech 100 or 111 have acquired listening skills.

There has been considerable theorizing concerning listening and auding with only a scattering of experimentation. According to existing data, listening would appear to be a complex human behavior that is only partially understood. There are, however definite listener functions, listening conditions and variables that affect listening. Aspects of attention are also important when considering the occurrence or unoccurrence of …

Temporal Compounds And Attention Theory, Bob Kosiba May 1974

Temporal Compounds And Attention Theory, Bob Kosiba

Psychology ETDs

The major purpose of this experiment was to extend the experimental analysis of temporal compounds to differential operant conditioning, and to study a variety of tasks differing in their difficulty due to the presence of various components and the assignment of reinforcement contingencies. After initial bar-press training in a Skinner Box equipped with a response bar, food delivery cup, and the mechanics to present sound and light stimulation, 48 female albino rats were randomly assigned to 6 groups for discrimination training. All groups were counterbalanced for the assignment of reinforcement to the stimulus configurations. Single stimulus presentation consisted of 1/2 …

Stimulus Structure And Varied Constant Input In Recall Of Letter And Digit Sequences, Frederick J. Parente May 1974

Stimulus Structure And Varied Constant Input In Recall Of Letter And Digit Sequences, Frederick J. Parente

Psychology ETDs

Three experiments investigated the coding strategies formed with Constant and variable input of letter and digit series. Recent research in memory indicates that varied presentations of perceptually-grouped letter sequences will lead to superior recall relative to conditions in which the same sequences are presented in a fixed or constant manner. The perceptual regrouping hypothesis advanced by Ellis et al. implicates stimulus structure as a principal factor contributing to the superiority in recall of variable stimulus training. The present experiments were designed as a test of this assumption, Ss were trained with stimuli varying in structure (meaningfulness and/or pronounceability) and presented …

The Use Of E.M.G. Biofeedback To Promote Relaxation And Relief Of Chronic Low Back Pain, Esther Fashina, Dorothy Holm

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this exploratory study was to determine if relaxation instruction and electromyographic (E.M.G.) feedback would reduce chronic low back pain. A secondary aim was to determine if the locus of control variable as defined by Rotter would influence the results obtained.

Fourteen non-hospitalized subjects with chronic low back pain, meeting the criteria of this study became the sample group. The training program consisted of six 30-minute sessions during which the subjects were taught relaxation with the use of a feedback electromyograph and relaxation instructions. After an interval of two weeks, a seventh session was conducted to evaluate if …

The Effect Of Preadmission Orientation On Post Hospital Behavior In Children, Alice Loo May 1974

The Effect Of Preadmission Orientation On Post Hospital Behavior In Children, Alice Loo

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Hospitalization was assessed as imposing stress on a child which may result in negative behavior. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a planned preadmission orientation in decreasing negative behavior after hospitalization.

An experimental randomized group design was used.

There were fifteen subjects ages 3.8 to 10.6 years who had a planned admission to Loma Linda University Medical Center for a minor surgery and brief hospital stay. The children were randomly assigned to two experimental groups and a control group. It was hypothesized that those receiving an orientation would have less negative post hospital behaviors than …

A Longitudinal Study On The Effects Of Stopping Out, Robert Dean Smith May 1974

A Longitudinal Study On The Effects Of Stopping Out, Robert Dean Smith

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Inquiries have been made by the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education and the United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare to determine how colleges and universities could meet the financial crisis now being faced. One of the recommendations made by both agencies as a result of their investigations was that curriculum planners at these institutions provide students with opportunities to have off-campus experiences, preferably in their chosen career areas, before they are graduated to determine whether they want to pursue their studies in that area or reorient themselves to other options. These planned stopouts, they suggested, would curtail drifting …

Development Of A Systems Approach For Training In Counseling Psychology, Alan Gettis

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The profession of counseling psychology has, for a long time, realized the need for reevaluating and improving traditional methods of training counselors. The major professional demands have been (1) a science-based approach to the training counselors; and (2) a more experientially oriented approach to the training of counselors. This study represented a developmental effort geared towards the integration of the above two demands.

Seven experientially oriented modular instructional units were developed for use in a counselor education program. Units were developed on (1) what counseling and psychotherapy are; (2) history of counseling and psychotherapy; (3) counselor attitudes; (4) interviewing skills …

The Preference-Success Assumption In Education, Thomas N. Dorsel Apr 1974

The Preference-Success Assumption In Education, Thomas N. Dorsel

Psychology ETDs

The preference-success assumption refers to the presupposition many educators seem to make that one will perform better at a task one prefers to do over a task one does not prefer to do, or that one will perform better if allowed to use a preferred method instead of a nonpreferred method. Research related to this assumption was reviewed, and it was argued that none of the previous research had evaluated this assumption in a straightforward, systematic manner, the goal of the present investigation. A 2 x 2 x 2 factorial design was utilized with 32 female and 32 male Ss …

In Phase One of the study, Mischel’s Delay-of-Reward Questionnaire was given to 443 fourth and fifth grade children. Results indicated that girls were significantly more willing to delay gratification than boys, middle class children were significantly more willing to delay gratification than lower class children, and Spanish-American children were significantly more willing to delay gratification than Anglo children. Results were considered to be reflective of differences …

A Response-Independent Schedule For Food Delivery:Interactions With Reinforcement And Extinction Produce Stimulus Control., Michael Glenn Grisham Mar 1974

A Response-Independent Schedule For Food Delivery:Interactions With Reinforcement And Extinction Produce Stimulus Control., Michael Glenn Grisham

Psychology ETDs

Pigeons were trained to keypeck for food delivered according to a response-dependent random-interval schedule. Then, in each of three experiments, a control group and an experimental group received multiple schedule successive discrimination training followed by generalization testing in extinction. During discrimination training two component schedules, each associated with a distinctive stimulus projected on the response key, alternated within each session. The component schedules were random-interval reinforcement and extinction for control groups, while one component schedule for experimental groups was random-time food delivery. In the random-time component response-independent food delivery occurred at the same irregular time intervals as in the random-interval …

A Developmental Study Of Imagery And Verbal Mediation As A Function Of Instructions In A Delayed Discrimination Task, Thelma A. Giomi Feb 1974

A Developmental Study Of Imagery And Verbal Mediation As A Function Of Instructions In A Delayed Discrimination Task, Thelma A. Giomi

Psychology ETDs

Current paired-associate (PA) research has questioned the traditional role of imagery in young children's memory representations. In the present study it was hypothesized that the developmental trend of PA findings reflects an artifact of the procedure, i.e., decoding, rather than the actual memory representation employed by the child. To minimize response learning and decoding and obtain a more accurate assessment of the mediator modality utilized by the child, the present study employed a two-choice delayed matching-to-sample task. A total of 80 middle socio-economic level children of two age levels, 4 and 7, participated in a three-stage study: acquisition, in which …

Social Play And Play-Soliciting By Infant Canids, Marc Bekoff Feb 1974

Social Play And Play-Soliciting By Infant Canids, Marc Bekoff

Ethology Collection

The development of social interaction was studied in infant coyotes, beagles, and wolves. In this paper, social play behavior is discussed. Social play may be characterized in a number of ways: (i) actions from various contexts are incorporated into labile (unpredictable) temporal sequences; (ii) the "play bout" is typically preceded by a metacommunicative signal which indicates "what follows is play"; these signals are also observed during the bout; (iii) certain actions may be repeated and performed in an exaggerated manner; (iv) the activity appears "pleasurable" to the players.

By comparing these three species, some insight into the dynamics of social …

A Study Of The Relationship Between Attitudes Toward Woman's Roles And Career Choices Of Women Graduate Students, Barbara Backstrand Feb 1974

A Study Of The Relationship Between Attitudes Toward Woman's Roles And Career Choices Of Women Graduate Students, Barbara Backstrand

Dissertations and Theses

The purposes of the present study were to explore how American college women view their roles and whether or not women who choose not-traditional-for-women (NTW) careers have more or less social support from significant others for that choice than women who choose traditional-for-women (TW) careers. A related question asked whether aspects of a woman's personal history predict her role attitudes and behavior as an adult.

The Relationship Of Verbal And Symbolic Mediation To Induced Meaning, Dennis G. Groome Jan 1974

The Relationship Of Verbal And Symbolic Mediation To Induced Meaning, Dennis G. Groome

All Master's Theses

Four experimental groups were presented nine induced-meaning training trials with 20 CVC stimuli and either abstract or concrete noun, picture alone, or picture plus noun responses. Two control groups received no training trials. Two experimental groups were required to learn associations and the other two simply viewed S-R pairings. Half the groups in each condition generated images and the other half generated word associates to 12 nouns and 20 CVCs. No evidence of induced meaning or of active versus passive learning differences was found. Suggestions for more effective experimental procedures are made.

The Effects Of Pictorial Stimuli On The Direction-Following Behavior Of Mentally Retarded Adolescents, Dennis J. Tucker Jan 1974

The Effects Of Pictorial Stimuli On The Direction-Following Behavior Of Mentally Retarded Adolescents, Dennis J. Tucker

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

Two groups of retarded adolescents were presented sets of multiple verbal directions (imperative sentences). One group was exposed to pictures illustrating the objects and action of each direction in addition to the verbal directions. Subjects were required to carry out performances demanded by the directions. The direction-following behavior of the Verbal + Picture Group was found to be significantly superior to that of the Verbal Group. The groups did not differ significantly in sequencing their performances, i.e., carrying out the verbal directions in the order in which they were presented. Two possible explanations for the superior performance of the Verbal …

Facilitation Of Retrieval Of Words From Long Term Memory, Edward John Federman Jan 1974

Facilitation Of Retrieval Of Words From Long Term Memory, Edward John Federman

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This paper investigated whether retrieval may be facilitated by a process in which one learns to retrieve in a manner analogous to learning to learn as demonstrated by both Harlow's (1965) work with monkeys and Postman's and Keppel's (1966; Keppel, Postman, & Zavortnik, 1968) work in verbal recall. While the major focus of this study was to demonstrate this phenomenon, and the analogies cited suggest that the process will remain unspecified, an attempt was made to indicate and analyze the processes involved in the facilitation.
