Extraversion-Introversion And Sensitivity To Nonverbal Cues, Virginia Seiser Jul 1982

Extraversion-Introversion And Sensitivity To Nonverbal Cues, Virginia Seiser

Dissertations and Theses

Sixty-five college students completed the Profile of Nonverbal Sensitivity (PONS) and the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire. The results did not support the hypothesis that introverts would be found to be relatively more sensitive to negative nonverbal cues than to positive cues, and that this difference would be greater for introverts than for extroverts. The outcome did not support predictions concerning the relationship between sensitivity to nonverbal communication and extroversion- introversion based on either Gray's fear-frustration hypothesis or Eysenck's general conditionability hypothesis of extroversion-introversion.

The results supported findings of earlier researchers that females are more sensitive to nonverbal cues than males, and …

An Attributional Analysis Of The Expectancy Component Of Motivation Theory, John Edward Mathieu Jul 1982

An Attributional Analysis Of The Expectancy Component Of Motivation Theory, John Edward Mathieu

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Many modern work motivation theories are based at least in part on individuals’ subjective expectancies regarding successful job performance. However, the antecedent conditions and developmental process inherent in these formulations have yet to be specifies clearly. The present study utilizes the components of Social Learning Theory and Attribution Theory to examine these conditions in a laboratory setting. Experimental and correlational techniques were used to explore the relative contributions of both state and trait variables on causal attributions. Differences among causal attributions rated on relevance versus quantity were illustrated. Additionally, the underlying processes relating causal attributions, affective responses and future expectancy …

Autonomic Self-Control Of Clinical Relaxation As A Function Of Imagery, Dean G. Allen May 1982

Autonomic Self-Control Of Clinical Relaxation As A Function Of Imagery, Dean G. Allen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this dissertation was to test the significance of objectively measured imagery ability on the learning of self-controlled relaxation of autonomic nervous system activity. Imagery is discussed in terms of its interaction with Autogenic vs. Jacobsonian methods of training clinical relaxation.

Thirty-six female subjects from a college population, representing extreme highs and lows on "spatial ability" tests were given a series of three six-session sequences of Baseline, Treatment 1, and Treatment 2, which contained silent relaxation as a control, plus Jacobsonian and Autogenic relaxation. High and low spatial ability subjects were divided into split groups (A & B) …

The Use Of Sensory Predicates To Predict Responses To Sensory Suggestions, James M. Talone May 1982

The Use Of Sensory Predicates To Predict Responses To Sensory Suggestions, James M. Talone

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A scale consisting of eight suggestions worded with specific sensory predicates was administered to a large undergraduate introductory psychology class. Following the presentation of the suggestions, Self-Scoring Forms were filled out to assess the subjects' response to auditory (A), visual (V), and kinesthetic (K) suggestions. Prior to the conclusion of the session, subjects were asked to write a brief essay describing their experience of the suggestion portion of the session. Subject essays were content analyzed for the use of predicates (including, but not only A, V, and K). Frequency of usage of A, V, and K predicates were compared with …

The Relative Importance Of Fathers' Participation In Family Therapy, Alice Ann Smith Aldous May 1982

The Relative Importance Of Fathers' Participation In Family Therapy, Alice Ann Smith Aldous

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The purpose of this paper is to survey research and literature on family therapy to assess what is known currently about contributions of fathers in family counseling. At the same time, theory about fathers' participation in family therapy and his expected contributions to it are summarized here. Because a certain amount of theorizing and speculation are involved, the major question of this paper will be narrowed to avoid moving too far from the known. The main question will be the importance of the father's participation relative to his nonparticipation. Questions of the significance of the father's involvement relative to his …

The Behavioral And Resource Needs Assessment Of The Hispanic Community In Kalamazoo County, Roberto Flachier Apr 1982

The Behavioral And Resource Needs Assessment Of The Hispanic Community In Kalamazoo County, Roberto Flachier

Dissertations

This research was set out to assess in depth the behavioral and resource needs of the Hispanic Community in order to create a data base from which tactics of action could be developed and responsive and necessary services could be planned and initiated. Following are four of the basic assumptions that guided this research. One, Behavioral Health (BH) is directly related to the behavioral and resource base in areas necessary for living. Two, in order to plan responsive and necessary services, it is necessary to know the target community's behavioral and resource base and needs; e.g., in economics, employment, education, …

Personality And Behavioral Characteristics Important To The Coach/Athlete Relationship, Michael A. Zacharias Apr 1982

Personality And Behavioral Characteristics Important To The Coach/Athlete Relationship, Michael A. Zacharias

Honors Theses

Research in the area of sport psychology has grown tremendously over the past twenty years. One area, in particular, that has been researched a great deal is the idea of the typical athletic personality. (Fletcher and Dowell, 1971; Foster, 1977; Morgan and Johnson, 1978; and Morris, Vaccaro and Clarke, 1979 are examples.) Does the personality of the athlete differ from that of the non-athlete? Of particular concern are the areas of personality dealing with locus control and self-esteem. Locus of control is distributed along the internal/external dimension. Internal control was defined by Rotter, Livenant and Seeman (1962) as the perception …

When Can We Introspect Accurately About Mental Processes?, Ronald Thomas Kellogg Mar 1982

When Can We Introspect Accurately About Mental Processes?, Ronald Thomas Kellogg

Psychological Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Some theorists have suggested that the cognitive processes determining a person's performance in a given task are unconscious, making introspection a poor research tool for studying these processes. Others have argued that the relevant processes usually are consciously controlled and can be detailed by asking the person to introspect. Here, a synthesis of these two positions, a dual-factor approach, is proposed. Some of the processes involved in achieving a cognitive goal, such as learning a new concept, are viewed as unconscious and automatic; however, other processes are intentionally allocated conscious attention, in certain tasks, to accomplish other goal. To illustrate …

Aspectos Atribucionales De La Utilización De Servicios De Salud. (Attributional Aspects Of The Utilization Of Health Services, Gerardo Marín, B Marín, A M. Padilla

Psychology

This paper reports on the answers given by 100 Hispanic residents of East Los Angeles, California to questions dealing with why they themselves, their families and people in general did not receive proper health care. As has been found in other studies, the reasons considered as most important by the subjects were the high cost of health services, the lack of medical insurance, being undocumented, lack of child care, long waits and difficulties in speaking English. Cultural reasons such as a preference for curanderos, fear of physicians or modesty were not considered as important as some authors have proposed. When …

Acculturation And Biculturalism Indices Among Relatively Acculturated Hispanic Young Adults, H C. Triandis, C H. Hui, J Lisansky, Gerardo Marín Jan 1982

Acculturation And Biculturalism Indices Among Relatively Acculturated Hispanic Young Adults, H C. Triandis, C H. Hui, J Lisansky, Gerardo Marín

Psychology

Samples of Anglo and Hispanic male Navy recruits answered a series of questions relevant to acculturation and biculturalism. Three acculturation indices were identified: (a) Length of Residence in the U.S., (b) Media Acculturation and (c) Social Acculturation. Two biculturalism indices were identified: (1) Media Biculturalism and (2) Social Biculturalism. The subject's generation in the U.S. (low score for being born outside the U.S., high score for grandfather born in the U.S.) was positively related to all indices of acculturation and negatively related to Media Biculturalism. It was unrelated to Social Biculturalism.

A Factor Analytic Comparison Of The Work Values Of Divergent Groups, Janette A. Hankins Jan 1982

A Factor Analytic Comparison Of The Work Values Of Divergent Groups, Janette A. Hankins

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A new concept in motivation has recently been devised: that of work values. The Work Values Inventory (WVI) developed by Donald E. Super (1970) was used to test five hypotheses:

(1) The underlying work value structures of persons will not vary according to age;

(2) The underlying work value structures of persons will not vary according to sex;

(3) The underlying work value structures of persons will vary according to level (undergraduate, master's degree students, or post-master's degree);

(4) The underlying work value structures of college students will vary according to whether they are a psychology major or not;

(5) …

A Comparative Study Of Three Methods For Raising Self-Esteem Among The Elderly, Laila Gitelle Melin Davidson Jan 1982

A Comparative Study Of Three Methods For Raising Self-Esteem Among The Elderly, Laila Gitelle Melin Davidson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The self-concept of elderly people as a group is generally considered low. Self-concept is negatively influenced by an external source, i.e., cultural regard, and by the internal or personal adaptive changes of the aging process. To age successfully, positive or high concept of self is considered necessary. The literature indicates that self-concept can be changed. This study tested whether involvement in one of three educational processes (class groups) was effective in raising the self-esteem of the elderly participants. The class groups were (1) Current-Events or Job-Preparation, (2) Psychology, and (3) Memory and Relaxation Techniques. A fourth group, not in an …

Capgras' Syndrome, Robert J. Berson Jan 1982

Capgras' Syndrome, Robert J. Berson

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Capgras' Syndrome, the delusion of doubles, is a rare delusional phenomenon in which a person believes that identical doubles have replaced significant people in his life and/or that there exist identical doubles of himself. These delusional doubles are almost always believed to be malevolent. The delusion occurs in a variety of psychotic states, usually schizophrenia. It occurs in both women and men in a wide age range. This dissertation reviews early French reports by Capgras and his associates as well as over 100 cases reported in English. Previous efforts to explain the Syndrome have stressed both organic and psychodynamic factors. …

Exploratory Study Of A Measure Of Self-Actualization, Norma C. Troncoso Jan 1982

Exploratory Study Of A Measure Of Self-Actualization, Norma C. Troncoso

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Two studies were conducted to measure positive personality change expected to occur during four years of a self-actualizing program. The first study computed inter correlations among the scales of the Personal Orientation Inventory (POI) for students in the Psychology and English Departments of a Spanish-speaking college, which were then compared with those reported in the test manual. Generally, correlations were greater than those in the manual, which suggested possible influence by the humanistic and Christian philosophy of the college. The second study examined the effect of training for self-actualization and personality growth on the behavior of a group of psychology …

Hypothesis Recognition Failure In Conjunctive And Disjunctive Concept-Identification Tasks, Ronald Thomas Kellogg Jan 1982

Hypothesis Recognition Failure In Conjunctive And Disjunctive Concept-Identification Tasks, Ronald Thomas Kellogg

Psychological Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

While solving either a conjunctive or a disjunctive concept-identification problem, college students were asked to recognize hypothesis, stimulus, and feedback information from the immediately preceding trial. After this phase of the experiment, subjects were asked to estimate feature frequencies of occurrence and to classify old and new instances of the concept. Recognition performance was best for feedback and worst for stimulus information. Contrary to hypothesis theory, hypotheses were correctly recognized 65% of the time overall. Instances presented twice, once, and never before were classified equally well, a finding that argues against specific-instance theory. Finally, frequency estimates increased as a function …

The Upstream Approach In The Employee Assistance Program Concept, Raymond M. Thornton Jan 1982

The Upstream Approach In The Employee Assistance Program Concept, Raymond M. Thornton

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The employee assistance program (EAP) concept in industry is defined and examined in this paper. Stress is defined and its impact on the individual and the organization is examined. The development of a preventative model of an EAP which utilizes stress management techniques to prevent human suffering and lost company time is discussed. One of the main purposes of this research report is to propose that individuals with "Type A" behavior patterns who are taught stress management techniques will have significantly lower scores on physiological measures, stress measures, role conflict and role ambiguity measures than those Type A individuals who …

Relationship Between Creativity, Intelligence, And Sex Role Attitudes In College Students, Deborah D. Roman Jan 1982

Relationship Between Creativity, Intelligence, And Sex Role Attitudes In College Students, Deborah D. Roman

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

During the late 50's and early 60's the topic of creativity gained popularity among the scientific community, resulting in a proliferation of research on creativity. This increase in popularity led to the development of numerous test batteries claiming to measure creativity. These included batteries by Wallach and Kogan, Guilford, and Torrance, Although these researchers differ somewhat in their definitions of creativity, all of these tests tend to measure divergent thinking (requiring the generation of unique new ideas by synthesizing and reorganizing the available information) as opposed to convergent thinking (requiring knowledge, memory, and recognition). The development of objective tests of …
