Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications
This study initially set out to explore the facial features (and their descriptions) of the emotion-expressive behaviors of "peace" and "contentment" but ended up with a third one, "annoyed/irritated." The emotion-expressive behaviors of "peace" and "contentment" have been associated with the faces of deceased persons in a previous study. The pictures of two volunteers taken during a class on relaxation technique were given to 93 respondents made up of volunteer students from a small midwestern college and volunteer residents of a nursing home (see Appendix A and B). Participants were asked to choose from a list provided them the emotion-expressive …

Differences Between African Americans And White Americans On Social Acuity, Richard Raymond Jaramillo
Theses Digitization Project
This study, conceptually replicating the study by Funder and Harris (1986), examined the difference between African Americans and white Americans on measures of social acuity. Social acuity, as defined in this context, is the ability and inclination to perceive the psychological state of others and guide one's behavior in accordance with that perception.

Validation Of The Suicide Resilience Inventory-25 (Sri-25) With African American College Students, James Corye Johnson
Validation Of The Suicide Resilience Inventory-25 (Sri-25) With African American College Students, James Corye Johnson
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Suicide behavior has increased over the last several years in the 15-24 year old age group. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), in 1999, suicide was the 11th leading cause of death in the United States. There are substantial ethnic group differences in the rates of suicide for adults and adolescents. In both adults and adolescents, African Americans have the lowest rates of suicide in the United States of any other ethnic group. Resiliency behaviors are behaviors/protective factors that buffer individuals who are at risk for suicidal behaviors. This study was designed to examine whether ethnic group …

Telling - or writing - a story about an event in your life is telling a social story. Autobiographical narrations are also, to be sure, personal and unique, but the social nature of narrating is often overlooked in research and education. In particular, to appreciate what young people are doing when we ask them to share their personal experiences in public institutions like school, we need a theory to guide our reading of narratives as conversations.
This chapter focuses on how young narrators juggle the demanding yet potentially rewarding activity of narrating in public settings, and it offers insights for …
Potential Antecedents Of Muscle Dysmorphia, Crystal Henson
Potential Antecedents Of Muscle Dysmorphia, Crystal Henson
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The present study was designed to gain a better understanding as to some of the possible contributing factors of muscle dysmorphia. Muscle dysmorphia is an under recognized form of Body Dysmorphic Disorder. Individuals who are diagnosed with muscle dysmorphia are in reality very large and muscular, but they have a profound fear and belief that they are small and weak. These individuals go to extreme lengths to increase their amount of lean muscle mass. This includes behaviors such as spending hours in the gym, excessive attention to one's diet, and use of steroids or nutritional supplements. These individuals experience extreme …

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
In the August 2002 issue of Business 2.0, Geoff Keighley sketches the profits that companies such as Sony, Disney, Microsoft and others hope to make, as they enter into, or expand their existing, online multiplayer gaming ventures. With Everquest attracting some 150,000 players within six months of launching, each of whom was prepared to pay $10 a month to participate in online multiplay, it is easy to see why those in the industry are excited at having discovered such an apparently reliable revenue stream, with Keighley citing Sony Pictures Digital Entertainment President, Yair Landau's claim that This is …

On Katherine Frank's G-Strings And Sympathy: Strip Club Regulars And Male Desire, Kristen Schilt
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
Katherine Frank's book, G-Strings and Sympathy, provides an anthropological look into the fantasies of male strip club regulars in a Southern City she calls Laurelton. Turning the gaze onto the gazers, a group left unstudied in the majority of literature on sex work, Frank unpacks how trips to the strip club are closely linked with discourses about sexuality, consumption and masculinity. Through six years of participant observation at a variety of clubs in Laurelton and in-depth interviews with thirty self-professed strip club regulars, Frank delves into not only why these men attend strip clubs but how these visits …
Intensive Care Medical Procedure : Ptsd Symptoms In Children, Ludmila Zaytsev
Intensive Care Medical Procedure : Ptsd Symptoms In Children, Ludmila Zaytsev
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Studies indicate that medical procedures may cause post-traumatic stress (PTS) symptoms (fear, avoidance, sleep disturbances, irritability, concentration difficulties. hypervigilance). It has been suggested that administration of midazolam hydrochloride, a sedative/amnesic medication commonly used in the Pediatric Intensive Care Units (PICU), may help decrease if not prevent the development of PTS symptoms. This study examined if PTS symptoms were related to procedural invasiveness (PI) and whether midazolam had a moderating effect on the development and intensity of PTS symptoms in children. English-speaking children ages 8-16 (N=20) who had been in the PICU for at least 3 days were recruited at Loma …
Family: Variations And Changes Across Cultures, James Georgas
Family: Variations And Changes Across Cultures, James Georgas
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
In order to study psychological phenomena cross-culturally, it is necessary to understand the different types of family in cultures throughout the world and also how family types are related to cultural features of societies. This article discusses: The definitions and the structure and functions of family; the different family types and relationships with kin; the ecocultural determinants of variations of family types, e.g, ecological features, means of subsistence, political and legal system, education and religion; changes in family in different cultures; the influence of modernization and globalization on family change throughout the world.
Cross-Cultural Meta-Analyses, Dianne A. Van Hemert
Cross-Cultural Meta-Analyses, Dianne A. Van Hemert
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
In the enormous collection of cross-cultural data that have been published during the last few decades it is difficult to perceive patterns. There is a clear need for systematizing the vast amount of cross-cultural studies and for developing models that explain cross-cultural differences in psychology. Two methods of cross-cultural meta-analysis can be distinguished. First, the instrument-based method of comparing data for one instrument across countries is suitable for instruments which have been administered in many countries. Second, a domain-based meta-analysis used a thematic domain from which culture-comparative studies are sampled instead of one specific instrument or method.
Emotion Representation And Perception Across Cultures, Jeanette Altarriba, Dana M. Basnight, Tina M. Canary
Emotion Representation And Perception Across Cultures, Jeanette Altarriba, Dana M. Basnight, Tina M. Canary
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
Are emotion words or emotion categories universal, or are particular emotions and emotion categories specific to certain cultures? The current review explores the answer to this question by summarizing the limited number of studies that have addressed this issue. The representation of emotion is discussed with regards to verbal and nonverbal (facial) processing, in turn. The evidence indicates that the answer is often conflicting and that issues such as methodological, linguistic, social and cultural variance have contributed to the often contradictory findings.
