Children's Test Behavior And Examiner Bias On The Wechsler Intelligence Scale For Children, Charesa Mae Kirchner May 1979

Children's Test Behavior And Examiner Bias On The Wechsler Intelligence Scale For Children, Charesa Mae Kirchner

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study was designed to investigate the effect of chi1dren 1s test behavior on examiners' scoring, questioning, and confidence in test resu1ts. The variables under investigation were leve1 of inte11igence and extraversion-introversion as operationally defined in terms of sociabi1ity, response speed, and persistence. E1even-year-old male accomplices read scripts containing responses to the Verba1 Scale of the WISC and operationally defined test behaviors. The test responses to the Verba1 Scale of the WISC were designed to yield superior (IQ= 128) or average (IQ= 97) test scores by varying the quality of test responses. Extravert-Introvert test behaviors independent of the scoring of …

The Relationship Of A Counselor-Guided Meditation To Counselor Presence As Defined In Psychosynthesis, David Bradley Green May 1979

The Relationship Of A Counselor-Guided Meditation To Counselor Presence As Defined In Psychosynthesis, David Bradley Green

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study was designed to investigate the relationship, in a counseling session, of an initial guided meditation by a counselor to presence, a core condition of counseling and psychotherapy as defined in psychosynthesis. Presence consists of two variables--the quality of the therapeutic relationship and the ability of the counselor or therapist to disidentify from his or her personality and become identified as a 11 Self. 11 The quality of the therapeutic relationship was measured by the Barrett-Lennard Relationship Inventory. Counselor disidentification-"Self"identification was assessed by the number of distracting thoughts, feelings, and body sensations experienced by the counselor during the counseling …

A Behavioral Study Of Maternal-Infant Interaction With Focus On Infant Attachment And Infant Cognition, Bruce Mcnickle May 1979

A Behavioral Study Of Maternal-Infant Interaction With Focus On Infant Attachment And Infant Cognition, Bruce Mcnickle

Student Work

This study examined the interactions between 15 maternal-infant dyads using an operant learning format with special emphasis on the relationship of infant attachment to maternal behaviors, specifically the securityinsecurity dimension of infant attachment. Observations of maternal-infant interactions were made each month from infant ages 9 months to 12 months. Maternal and infant behaviors were coded and each category was scored for frequency and duration of behavior with an Esterline-Angus Event Recorder. Maternal ratios of responding and latency in responding to infant behaviors were calculated from the Esterline-Angus charts. Infants were administered several cognition tests and an attachment test, while mothers …

Effects Of Varying The Opportunity To Attack During A Fixed-Time Schedule, Phillip G. Muller May 1979

Effects Of Varying The Opportunity To Attack During A Fixed-Time Schedule, Phillip G. Muller

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Three White King pigeons were exposed to a fixed-time 120-second food delivery schedule and a live target pigeon. In order to evaluate whether induced aggression can take place in time periods other than immediately after food delivery, the target bird could be attacked (l) throughout the interfood interval; (2) after fixed post-food times had elapsed, or (3) after random post-food times had elapsed. When target availability was continuous or limited to random 30-second periods of the interfood interval, attacking was greatest after food delivery and decreased thereafter. Attacking did not predominate in any 15-second target access period occurring 15, 45, …

The Use Of Tolerance For Ambiguity And Empathic Listening Skills To Predict Conscientious Crisis Intervention Volunteers, Lois Murphy Apr 1979

The Use Of Tolerance For Ambiguity And Empathic Listening Skills To Predict Conscientious Crisis Intervention Volunteers, Lois Murphy

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

It was hypothesized that the personality variable Tolerance for Ambiguity and empathic listening skills would significantly differentiate conscientious from nonconscientious crisis intervention volunteers. A group of 20 conscientious and a group of 20 nonconscientious volunteers from a local crisis intervention center were given a test of Tolerance for Ambiguity and a test of empathic listening skills that measured Interest, Understanding, and Response-ability. Results of t-tests between the groups and correlations between the variables indicated that Tolerance for Ambiguity was not a significant differentiator between the two groups. However, it was found that conscientious volunteers had significantly higher levels of Interest …

The Myth Of Death And Rebirth: Its Manifestation In Contemporary Psychology, Randy Ring Apr 1979

The Myth Of Death And Rebirth: Its Manifestation In Contemporary Psychology, Randy Ring

Theses

The thesis, "The Myth of Death and Rebirth: Its Manifestation in Contemporary Psychology," explores the pervasive concept of death and rebirth across historical, religious, and psychological contexts. Beginning with the idea's presence in ancient mythologies like the Osiris myth and Eastern religious beliefs, the thesis highlights how these cultural narratives framed death not as an end but as a necessary transition to renewal. It emphasizes the symbolic role of death/rebirth rituals in premodern societies, where they marked transformative life stages and spiritual initiation.

The work transitions into examining modern psychology, particularly the contributions of Carl Jung and others who identified …

Methods For Increasing Children's Comprehension Of Prosocial Values As Transmitted Through Television Programs, Lissette E. Villanueva Apr 1979

Methods For Increasing Children's Comprehension Of Prosocial Values As Transmitted Through Television Programs, Lissette E. Villanueva

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the effect of intervening commentary and generalization discussions upon the generalization of prosocial values as transmitted through a commercially broadcast prosocial television program. The subjects participating were 50 first graders and 50 third graders. They were randomly assigned to one of five treatment conditions (control, film only, film with commentary, film with generalization, and film with commentary and generalization). Contrary to predications, the intervening commentary used as a means of directing attention to the critical points in the story, did not have an effect upon the comprehension of the values implied in the program. It is suggested …

The Effects Of Physical Attractiveness And Sex-Role Stereotyping On Peer Performance Evaluations, Claire Trimer Edwards Apr 1979

The Effects Of Physical Attractiveness And Sex-Role Stereotyping On Peer Performance Evaluations, Claire Trimer Edwards

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Each of 216 female and 72 male college students read an essay that supposedly had been written by either a male or a female college freshman on a topic that was either masculine, feminine, or neuter. Photographs attached to the essays were used to create physically attractive and unattractive conditions. Photographs were omitted in the physically anonymous condition, Statistical analyses on six performance variables indicated that physical attractiveness enhanced some evaluations of performance for both male and female essayists in accordance with the what-is-beautiful- is-good stereotype. For male essayists, the attractiveness effect occurred on all essay topics regardless of their …

An Insight Into Management Development Programs, Bretta A. Tulbert Jan 1979

An Insight Into Management Development Programs, Bretta A. Tulbert

Honors Theses

Management development can be defined as any form of training for managers to improve present job performance while preparing them for advancement into higher positions. It involves any attempt by a manager to improve his position by the acquisition of new knowledge, skills, and attitudes in an orderly manner. Management development involves more than a series of presentations; it is a growing process which develops both general and specific interest. This is the responsibility of the company and the individual. The programs should include continuous feedback of results, development of individual career plans, and application of executive development techniques.

The Relationship Of Lateral Eye Movements To Field-Dependence-Independence And Verbal And Performance Skills, Linda J. Stennett-Mason Jan 1979

The Relationship Of Lateral Eye Movements To Field-Dependence-Independence And Verbal And Performance Skills, Linda J. Stennett-Mason

Masters Theses

Lateral eye movements and handedness as indexes of hemisphere asymmetry were compared to field-dependence-independence, as measured by Rod-and-Frame Test errors, and to Wechsler Verbal and Performance IQs. Consistent with previous research, the hypotheses predicted that persons with inconsistent lateral eye movements (ambilaterality) would have greater Rod-and-Frame errors (field-dependence) and lower Wechsler Verbal and Performance IQs.

Subjects were 41 male undergraduates who were grouped according to their lateral eye movements in response to 20 reflective questions consisting of ten verbal (left-hemisphere) and ten spatial (right-hemisphere) questions. The response scoring resulted in 12 subjects with 70% or more lateral eye movements to …

The Measurement Of Anger In Children: A Multi-Modal Approach, Edward Shirrell Eastman Jr. Jan 1979

The Measurement Of Anger In Children: A Multi-Modal Approach, Edward Shirrell Eastman Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this study was to utilize self-report, peer-report and teacher-report techniques in measuring (reporting) anger in children; and to determine the intercorrelation between these three approaches in order to determine their relationship to one another and in turn, to assess these reporting tools. Subjects were 38 male and female emotionally disturbed children from the Virginia Treatment Center for Children, a short-term residential psychiatric facility in Richmond, Virginia. There were 28 boys and 10 girls, with a mean age of approximately 11 years.

Each student was given the Children's Inventory of Anger (CIA) and the Peer-Report of Anger (PR). …

Threat Frequency And Contingency In A Threat-Vulnerable Game, Christine Anne Driver Jan 1979

Threat Frequency And Contingency In A Threat-Vulnerable Game, Christine Anne Driver

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The primary purpose of the present study was to determine the effects of threat frequency and contingency on game-playing behaviour in a threat-vulnerable game. A second purpose was to determine the stability of these effects when strategies were alerted during the final 75 trials of the game. Threat was operationally defined as the use of a particular choice in a threat-vulnerable game. One hundred students enrolled in undergraduate courses at Wilfrid Laurier University played in one of nine programmed strategy conditions: all possible pairwise orderings of a passive, demanding contingent, and a demanding noncontingent strategy. The latter two strategies were …

The Psychodynamics And Process Of A Small Group, Priscilla G. Shoemaker Jan 1979

The Psychodynamics And Process Of A Small Group, Priscilla G. Shoemaker

Theses

This study, conducted by Priscilla J. Shoemaker in partial fulfillment of a Bachelor of Arts degree at The Lindenwood Colleges in 1979, explores the psychodynamics and processes within a small group setting focused on improving communication skills. The research group, composed of six women aged between 30 and 55, engaged in weekly sessions held in the author's home. Under the guidance of faculty advisor Dr. H.D. Johns, the sessions incorporated principles from Transactional Analysis (TA) and Parent Effectiveness Training (PET) to foster better interpersonal understanding and self-awareness.

Shoemaker structured the sessions using a curriculum developed from her academic studies and …

The Study Of Crisis Intervention Programs In Selected Community Mental Health Centers, Susan Van Cleve Jan 1979

The Study Of Crisis Intervention Programs In Selected Community Mental Health Centers, Susan Van Cleve

Theses

This culminating project by Susan Van Cleve (1979) examines the theoretical foundations and operational realities of crisis intervention programs within community mental health centers. The study begins by distinguishing between psychiatric emergencies and crisis states, utilizing the theoretical frameworks established by Lindemann and Caplan to define the phases of crisis and the principles of intervention. It outlines the essential elements of a comprehensive crisis service, which must include 24-hour telephone hotlines, face-to-face interventions (walk-in and outreach), emergency medical/psychiatric backup, and community linkage networks.

A significant portion of the paper is dedicated to a descriptive survey of 41 agencies in Illinois …

Theory And Practice Of Integrated Psychology, Marjorie L. Rand Jan 1979

Theory And Practice Of Integrated Psychology, Marjorie L. Rand

Theses

Marjorie L. Rand’s Theory and Practice of Integrated Psychotherapy explores a holistic approach to therapy that unifies the body, mind, emotions, and spirit. Drawing from Gestalt therapy, Reichian therapy, movement therapy, breath awareness, and meditation, Rand presents a flexible and adaptive therapeutic model that prioritizes self-awareness and personal growth.

The thesis challenges the traditional medical and psychological models, which often treat the mind and body as separate entities. Instead, Rand argues for an integrative approach where energy flows freely, reducing psychological and physical distress. She discusses the role of energy healing, the chakra system, and bodywork as essential components of …

A Study Of Community Psychology Graduate Student Training Experiences For Consultation Roles, Joanne Granek Jan 1979

A Study Of Community Psychology Graduate Student Training Experiences For Consultation Roles, Joanne Granek

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

An exploratory study investigating graduate student consultation training experiences was conducted. Eighty-five graduate students from 35 training programs focusing on community psychology participated in the study. Students reported that they experienced an increase in the intensity of negative feelings as they moved through successive phases of the consultation. The concept of the role discrepancy was introduced and described as the incongruence between the student and professional expert roles which students play simultaneously. There was some evidence to suggest that students who perceived the roles of student and professional as discrepant were more likely to feel incompetent than were students who …
