Predictors Of General And Dating-Related Conflict Among Parents And Middle Adolescents: The Active Role Of The Adolescent, Bonnie Brodzeller Dowdy
Predictors Of General And Dating-Related Conflict Among Parents And Middle Adolescents: The Active Role Of The Adolescent, Bonnie Brodzeller Dowdy
Theses and Dissertations
Current treatments of parent-adolescent conflict and autonomy development neglect the active role adolescents can play in managing conflict. The present study tests a conceptual model based on developmental theory. Dating is postulated as a salient source of conflict for parents and middle adolescents. Adolescents will utilize cognitive strategies to achieve dating-related goals. These strategies include both neutral (talking and selective disclosure) and negative (lying and using friends to cover for you) forms of filtering information parents receive in order to achieve their dating-related goals. General developmental and domain-specific factors were postulated to directly affect as well as moderate the effects …
The Effect Of Exposure To Glucocorticoids On The Retention Of A Spatial Task In Rats Injected Bilaterally With Beta-Amyloid Into The Hippocampus, Harinie Wijeweera '94
The Effect Of Exposure To Glucocorticoids On The Retention Of A Spatial Task In Rats Injected Bilaterally With Beta-Amyloid Into The Hippocampus, Harinie Wijeweera '94
Honors Projects
The pathology of Alzheimer's disease is characterized by neuritic plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. The core component of the plaques is an amino acid named Beta-amyloid (AB). A recent study done by Dornan, Kang, McCampbell, and Kang (1993) reported that bilateral injections of AB along with a subthreshold dose of ibotenic acid (IBO) into the hippocampus significantly impaired the acquisition of a spatial learning task in rats. Dornan et al suggest that the results seen in their study maybe due to AB+IBO working synergistically via NMDA receptors to cause calcium dyshomeostasis. Another way that calcium dyshomeostasis occurs in the brain is …
The Effect Of Premium Offers And Consumer Buying Decisions, Amy R. Parker '94
The Effect Of Premium Offers And Consumer Buying Decisions, Amy R. Parker '94
Honors Projects
Premiums programs are common promotional tools, but have received very little empirical study. The purpose of the present study was to determine the effectiveness of a premium program done by Beer Nuts, Inc. A mail survey was sent to the first 250 respondents to the premium offer. Results indicate that most of the respondents were previous Beer Nuts consumers, would switch brands to receive a premium, would pay more for a product to obtain a premium, will continue to purchase the product after receiving the premium, and will use cents-off coupons. Additionally, results show that the average premium consumer is …

Behavior And Thought Change After A Self-Improvement Program: Studying The Effects Of Environmental And Other Factors On The Transfer Of Training, Jennifer Bernstein '94
Honors Projects
This study tested the attitude-behavior relationship and transfer of training on a specific training program -The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. It is a self-improvement program designed to improve. such things as: interpersonal relationships, time management skills, and concentrating only on what one can change. The subjects were 84 BroMenn Healthcare employees signed up to take the training program. Both groups were given a pre-and post-test consisting of four parts: one's behaviors and thoughts (including questions on locus of control), countertraining, and two parts of the Personal Strain Questionnaire. It was found that a low pre-test countertraining score did …

Perceptions Of Nurse Behaviors By Persons With Copd During Acute Shortness Of Breath, Joyce A. Kowatch
Masters Theses
This study employed a qualitative approach to explore the perceptions of clients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease recalling nursing behaviors as a part of a process of helping during dyspnea. Grounded theory was used to look at how a client's world was constructed in this particular situation. Examination of data led to the generation of a hypothesis to explain the process of helping. Subjects were asked what it was like when they were extremely short of breath and what nursing behaviors helped or didn't help them.; Identified changes were categorized as suffocation, pain, energy depletion, panic, and cognitive haze. Helpful …

Spouse Adaptation After The Partner's Open Heart Surgery, Marietta J. Gardner
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to describe the adaptation of male and female spouses after their partners' open heart surgery using the theory of person as an adaptive system. A descriptive correlational design was used to examine adaptation of male and female spouses to their partners' open heart surgery (criterion variable); and partners' health prior to surgery, length of time partner diagnosed with heart disease, number of years married, and general state of marital relationship prior to surgery as perceived by the spouse were predictor variables. The sample consisted of 20 male and 25 female spouses, 31 to 88 …
Trust In A Medical Expert System: An Exploratory Study, Anthony John Moffa
Trust In A Medical Expert System: An Exploratory Study, Anthony John Moffa
Theses and Dissertations
Operator trust in the abilities of an expert system can be crucial, especially in a high risk setting like the medical field. No studies have attempted to measure trust in a medical diagnostic aid. In the present research, diagnostic agreement and number of trials of an abdominal pain diagnostic aid were manipulated. The scenarios and feedback of the diagnostic aid were limited for purposes of control. Participants entered cases into the computer-based aid. Effects on operators’ trust were measured subjectively. The trust metric consisted of an overall trust question as well as questions representing two models of trust between humans …

When "Perfect Fear Casts Out All Love": Christian Perspectives On The Assessment And Treatment Of Shame, Nancy S. Thurston
Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program
Shame reactions are often uncomfortable, even excruciating, for clients to work through in therapy. When not adequately treated, shame reactions can seriously disrupt the therapy process. This article seeks to equip Christian mental health professionals with practical strategies for effectively assessing and treating shame reactions. Theoretical perspectives on shame within a Christian context are also briefly discussed.
Personal Space And Territoriality Of Users In An Academic And Public Library, Ruth A. Hamilton
Personal Space And Territoriality Of Users In An Academic And Public Library, Ruth A. Hamilton
Graduate Research Papers
An observation checklist was used to investigate responses of patrons to intrusion in their personal space. The study was done in a small academic library and a small public library. After the subject was seated an intruder would come in and sit as close to the subject as possible. The responding time was limited to five minutes. The response of the subject was recorded on a detailed checklist. Findings indicated that female subjects make more adjustments than male subjects. In general, adjustments made by subjects were minimal in number and minor in nature.
Community Adjustment Of Young Adults With Mental Retardation: Overcoming Barriers To Inclusion, Richard F. Ittenbach, Brian H. Abery, Sheryl A. Larson, Amy N. Spiegel, Robert W. Prouty
Community Adjustment Of Young Adults With Mental Retardation: Overcoming Barriers To Inclusion, Richard F. Ittenbach, Brian H. Abery, Sheryl A. Larson, Amy N. Spiegel, Robert W. Prouty
Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications
Movement of persons with mental retardation out of institutions and into community settings is occurring at an ever-increasing pace (Amado, Lakin, & Menke, 1990). State and federal laws have legitimized the basic rights of persons with mental retardation to live, work, and participate in typical community settings. Yet, physical integration is not synonymous with full community inclusion. Numerous barriers remain that serve as obstacles to successful assimilation into community life. For instance, successful social integration depends on attitudinal changes of persons without mental retardation—families, friends, service-delivery professionals, and the general public—toward persons with mental retardation. The way young adults with …
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator And Marital Satisfaction: Similarity And Complementarity, Glenda Sue Sullentrup
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator And Marital Satisfaction: Similarity And Complementarity, Glenda Sue Sullentrup
Theses
Many personality variables determine marital satisfaction. According to Myers theory (1993), couples are more likely to experience marital satisfaction if the spouses share similarity on the second preference of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI], the sensing-intuition [S-N] index. In contrast, Keirsey and Bates (1984) proposed that opposite MBTI types attract, but opposite temperaments do not. The purpose of this study was to determine whether similarity (having the same preference on the S-N index, or the same temperament) or complementarity (having opposite preferences on the S-N index, or opposite temperaments) was related to marital satisfaction among couples. Thirty-one white married couples …
Mother-Daughter Rapport And Its Relationship To The Daughter's Self-Esteem, Deborah L. Stilwell-Boyer
Mother-Daughter Rapport And Its Relationship To The Daughter's Self-Esteem, Deborah L. Stilwell-Boyer
Theses
The relationship between mother-daughter rapport and the daughter's self-esteem was examined for 36 women. All participants were women who volunteered to complete the Mother-Daughter Rapport Index and the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory. The only requirement for a woman to participate in the study was that the subject's mother had to be living. Where it was predicted that there would be no relationship between quality of mother-daughter rapport and daughter's self-esteem, it was found that there was a relationship between the two. Where quality of mother-daughter rapport increased, the daughter's self-esteem also increased. Where quality of mother-daughter rapport decreased, the daughter's self-esteem …

This investigation examined the presence of personality disorders in the mothers of children with an Attention- Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD). This was accomplished by examining 60 male subjects ages 6 to 12. The Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-II (MCMI-II) was administered to 20 mothers of children with ADHD, 20 mothers of children with ADHD and CD and a matched comparison group who did not meet the criteria for ADHD or CD. Repeated analysis of variance (ANOVAS) and Chi Square analyses were calculated on each MCMI-II scale and the Duncan's multiple range test was utilized to determine statistical significance. Data analyses revealed …
The Effects Of Gender Of Juror And Gender Of Plaintiff On Outcomes Of Mock Medical Malpractice Lawsuites, Verity Anne Tubb
The Effects Of Gender Of Juror And Gender Of Plaintiff On Outcomes Of Mock Medical Malpractice Lawsuites, Verity Anne Tubb
Graduate Theses
The current study investigates the effect of the gender of the subject and the gender of the plaintiff on the outcome of a mock medical malpractice lawsuit. Thirty males and twenty-nine females read a transcript from a mock medical malpractice lawsuit, completed a verdict form and answered opinion and recognition questions. The gender of the subjects did not produce any significant results, showing that male subjects did not select significantly different verdicts when compared to female subjects. The gender of the plaintiff did show significant results. The subjects found for female plaintiffs more often than they did the male plaintiff. …
The Assessment Of Political Personality: A Psychodiagnostically Relevant Conceptualization And Methodology, Aubrey Immelman
The Assessment Of Political Personality: A Psychodiagnostically Relevant Conceptualization And Methodology, Aubrey Immelman
Psychology Faculty Publications
The purpose of this article is to narrow the conceptual and methodological gap between existing formulations in psychodiagnostic theory and current practice in political personality. It is suggested that accurate assessment of the personalities of high-level leaders can significantly improve the prediction of political outcomes but that this endeavor has been hampered by inadequate transposition from the source disciplines of personality theory and psychodiagnostics to the target discipline of contemporary political psychology. It is proposed that Theodore Millon’s personological model offers a viable integrative framework for the study of political personality. The present article explicates Millon’s model, specifies the relevance …
Selected Demographic Variables As Predictors Of Moral Development Among George Fox College Students, Joe D. Wood
Selected Demographic Variables As Predictors Of Moral Development Among George Fox College Students, Joe D. Wood
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
The theoretical basis of this research was based on Kohlberg's cognitive model of moral development. Rest's operationalization of principled moral reasoning, Davison's scale score, and Thoma's utilizer score were specifically examined. A predictive relationship between certain demographic variables and the principled moral reasoning and Davison's score have been identified in the research literature. The purpose of this study was to examine further this predictive relationship. The James D. Foster and Beth A. LaForce research project provided the archival data for this research. From the existing data, demographic variables were selected as predictors of moral development among incoming George Fox College …
Crime And Evil: Meta-Theory, Theory, And Praxis In Forensic Psychology, Eric David Kunkel
Crime And Evil: Meta-Theory, Theory, And Praxis In Forensic Psychology, Eric David Kunkel
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
The prevalence of crime is a world-wide problem, and concomitantly, the fear of crime grips the public. Also, social scientists remain pessimistic about solutions: many acquiesce in the •nothing works" conclusion. The general populace views crime as both pathological (i.e., sick) and evil. Privately, social scientists may agree, but professionally they describe crime as nothing but an illness. This research establishes that such reductionism limits the explanatory power of forensic psychology and that ruling out the existence of evil a priori is unscientific. First, the philosophy of science underlying the study of crime is examined. The history of science, the …
The Effects Of Public Commitment And Group Feedback Of Curbside Recycling, Iser Guillermo Deleón
The Effects Of Public Commitment And Group Feedback Of Curbside Recycling, Iser Guillermo Deleón
Masters Theses
Several methods for increasing recycling have been presented in the psychology literature. However, many rely on incentive systems that require individual response monitoring for differential delivery of consequences, thus rendering them prohibitively expensive on a community-wide scale. This study examined the effects of three community interventions which may circumvent this limitation: public commitment, group feedback, and a combination of both. The Commitment Only intervention produced no substantial increase in recycling when superimposed upon a curbside recycling baseline. The Feedback Only intervention and the Combined Intervention produced increases of 25.47% and 40.00%, respectively. A no-intervention Control Group decreased in amount recycled …

Behavioral Effects Of Tyrosine During Sustained Wakefulness, D. L. Wiegmann, D. F. Neri, R. R. Stanny, S. A. Shappell, A. H. Mccardie, D. L. Mckay
Publications
The fatigue and cognitive performance deficits associated with sleep loss and stress, like that experienced during sustained flight operations and nighttime flying, have motivated the search for effective nonpharmacological countermeasures. The behavioral effects of the potential countermeasure tyrosine, an amino-acid precursor to dopamine and norepinephrine, were examined during an episode of continuous nighttime work involving one night's sleep loss. Volunteers performed nine iterations of a battery of cognitive and subjective tasks for approximately 13 h, beginning at 1930 and ending at 0820 the following morning. Subjects remained awake throughout the day on which the experiment began and were awake for …
Maternal Perceptions Of The Social Development And Behavior Of Asthmatic Children, Chelley A. Merrell
Maternal Perceptions Of The Social Development And Behavior Of Asthmatic Children, Chelley A. Merrell
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
To assess the effects of asthma on the social development and behavior of asthmatic children, 60 mothers of 6- to 13-year-old children (30 mothers of asthmatics, 30 mothers of non-asthmatics) completed the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL: Achenbach & Edelbrock, 1986) and were administered the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scale (Vineland: Sparrow, Balla, & Cicchetti, 1984). It was hypothesized that asthmatic children would lag behind non-asthmatic peers in social development, defined as the development of age-appropriate behaviors (i.e., communication, daily living skills, and socialization). In addition, it was hypothesized that asthmatic children would exhibit more internalizing behaviors than non-asthmatic children. There were …

Vocal Perception: Brain Event-Related Potentials In A Chimpanzee, Gary G. Berntson, Sarah T. Boysen, Michael W. Torello
Sentience Collection
We describe the first brain event-related potential (ERP) study of cognitive processes in the chimpanzee. In an extension of our studies on the ontogeny of vocal perception, ERP measures were obtained during the presentation of simple nonsignal stimuli as well as conspecific and human vocalizations. We initially confirmed findings from humans and monkeys of the appearance of a long-latency positivity in the ERP waveform to a rare stimulus in an oddball paradigm. This ERP component is reminiscent of the P3a reported in humans under similar (passive) experimental conditions. We further demonstrated that both conspecific and human vocal stimuli having affective …
