A Comparative Analysis Of Selected Adolescent Fears, Martina Griffith Meyer Jul 1989

A Comparative Analysis Of Selected Adolescent Fears, Martina Griffith Meyer

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The subject of adolescent fears troubling today's generation was studied with the question of specific fears and methods of questioning. It was hypothesized that direct, close-ended questions related to the fear of nuclear war and the fear of failure would elicit responses of greater fear than would indirect, open-ended questions about the future. It was also hypothesized that there would be sex differences in fearfulness of nuclear war with females indicating more fear. It was also expected that there would be developmental differences with 8th-grade subjects more fearful of nuclear war than 12th-grade subjects, and with the older subjects more …

Influence Of Mission Statements On Teacher Education Programs At Two Church-Related Undergraduate Institutions, Ann Marie Biermaier May 1989

Influence Of Mission Statements On Teacher Education Programs At Two Church-Related Undergraduate Institutions, Ann Marie Biermaier

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the ways in which stated institutional missions influenced the operation of teacher education programs, and the way that teacher education programs used the institutional mission statement in evaluating their programs as it applied to two private, liberal arts colleges in Minnesota. Institutional missions were expected to guide curricular policy, inform the public, and establish criteria for accountability and subsequent program evaluation.

This study was conducted utilizing the case study method. Data were gathered by reviewing documentation pertaining to the institution and to the teacher education program as well as by interviewing administrators, …

The Effects Of Diary Writing Support Groups On Women's Depression, Self-Acceptance And Well-Being, Linda Elaine Barnes May 1989

The Effects Of Diary Writing Support Groups On Women's Depression, Self-Acceptance And Well-Being, Linda Elaine Barnes

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study was conducted to determine whether learning specific writing techniques and discussing them in a small group is more beneficial to women than writing a journal using self-taught techniques, or not writing at all.

Instruments used included the Beck Depression Inventory and the California Personality Inventory (Self-Acceptance and Well-Being scales).

The literature review covers four general areas: a brief discussion of the impact of contemporary feminism on traditional therapy; an examination of feminist therapy, specifically its advocacy of consciousness-raising groups as a therapy alternative; women's self-reports on diary or journal writing; and information on modern non-literary journal uses including …

Assessing Mental Health Needs In Northern Haiti: A Multidimensional Approach, Jean Abede Alexandre Apr 1989

Assessing Mental Health Needs In Northern Haiti: A Multidimensional Approach, Jean Abede Alexandre

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

This study assessed mental health needs in Northern Haiti, with the socioeconomic and sociocultural factors which predispose to mental disorders. Following the Key Informants approach to needs assessment, two groups were chosen to participate in this study: 27 out of 60 physicians and 30 out of 70 clergymen (n = 57), completed a questionnaire which asked specific questions on certain mental disorders they have either observed or dealt with among the population. The participants were also asked to give the frequency with which those disorders occurred among the population, and to rate the importance of factors contributing to those mental …

The Transition From Infancy To Early Childhood: A Difficult Transition, And A Difficult Theory, Carolyn P. Edwards Jan 1989

The Transition From Infancy To Early Childhood: A Difficult Transition, And A Difficult Theory, Carolyn P. Edwards

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The transition from infancy to early childhood was observed in households in rural Zinacanteco households in the Highlands of Chiapas, Mexico, in 1968-1969, and found to be a fairly lengthy period of upset, disturbance, listlessness, and apathy for the children, leading eventually to their accepting a new position in the family. The transition involved three abrupt and harsh changes: (1) abrupt weaning from the mother’s breast; (2) simultaneous change in sleeping arrangements from lying next to the mother to sleeping with siblings; and (3) more gradual transfer of the child’s primary care from the mother to older siblings or courtyard …

Modern Black Psychological Theories Versus European Methodology And How They Relate To Corporate Savvy, Lynda Williams Smith Jan 1989

Modern Black Psychological Theories Versus European Methodology And How They Relate To Corporate Savvy, Lynda Williams Smith

Theses

There has been extensive research done on Black Theoretical Constructs versus European Constructs. It is the intent of this project to provide its readers with an insight into the problems that exist with racist and oppressive theories and their applications and methodologies (past and present); I will also explore the "Afrocentric Model" (a black frame of reference), and how that model of Black personality theories can be developed to "deal with" White corporate situations.

Racism and oppression are two critical problems of our time for which some have theories, but no one has an answer. Every man, in a sense, …

Human Factors, Ergonomics, And Human Factors Engineering: An Analysis Of Definitions, Deborah M. Licht, Donald J. Polzella, Kenneth R. Boff Jan 1989

Human Factors, Ergonomics, And Human Factors Engineering: An Analysis Of Definitions, Deborah M. Licht, Donald J. Polzella, Kenneth R. Boff

Psychology Faculty Publications

This report was prepared in response to a request by the Human Factors Committee of the National Research Council to aid its deliberations regarding a standardized definition of human factors. Though many variations of definitions abound, a formally endorsed unified definition of the field does not exist. CSERIAC's approach to this query was to compile and analyze definitions of human factors (and related terms) from a range of key resource materials and present them in a manner to expedite the Committee's consideration of a unified definition. Subsequent to a review of the human factors literature, we collected definitions, sorted and …

Creationist Resistance To Evolution: The Patriarchal Unconscious As The Key, Ladelle Mcwhorter, Robert B. Graber Jan 1989

Creationist Resistance To Evolution: The Patriarchal Unconscious As The Key, Ladelle Mcwhorter, Robert B. Graber

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Enlightened scientists and educators everywhere lament the persistence of disbelief in the process of evolution through natural selection, but they have done little to illuminate the psychological basis of this resistance. This neglect unfortunately applies even to psychoanalytic commentators, who, while uncovering oedipal elements in evolutionism, have remained silent about creationism. We believe, however, that psychoanalysis has much to offer toward a solution of the problem of creationism's persistence. In particular, we propose that evolutionary theory stirs a profound fear, rooted in the psychosexual developmental processes characterizing human society thus far, of female power.

A Comparison Of Three Thought Constraint Treatment Analogues: Process Constraint, Reality Constraint, And Combined Process And Reality Constraint, Martha Lana Bogardus-Groble Jan 1989

A Comparison Of Three Thought Constraint Treatment Analogues: Process Constraint, Reality Constraint, And Combined Process And Reality Constraint, Martha Lana Bogardus-Groble

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Several studies have explored the application of self-generated attitude change model to the reduction of phobic affect. Three treatment analogues of constrained thought, previously demonstrated to attenuate polarized affect, were compared to determine the relative efficacy of process constraint, reality constraint, and combined constraint. The effects of treatment were assessed with-measures of behavioral approach, physiological arousal, subjective fear report, self-appraised performance, and subject predictions of ability to cope in extra laboratory situations. It was predicted that the combined condition would provide the most powerful treatment analogue but this was not demonstrated. Subjects in all conditions improved across all measures, except …

Views Of Cesarean Birth Among Primiparous Women Of Mexican Origin In Los Angeles, Laura H. Cummins, Susan C. M. Scrimshaw, Patrice L. Engle Sep 1988

Views Of Cesarean Birth Among Primiparous Women Of Mexican Origin In Los Angeles, Laura H. Cummins, Susan C. M. Scrimshaw, Patrice L. Engle

Psychology and Child Development

This study examined data from a larger project on the cultural context of first birth among low-income women of Mexican origin giving birth in Los Angeles. Data on knowledge of cesarean birth and perceptions of the cesarean birth experience were collected. In addition, differences in perceptions of the experience between women giving birth vaginally and those giving birth by cesarean as reported in the literature were assessed. Five hundred eighteen women were surveyed, of whom 58 had a cesarean birth. Statistical analyses revealed few significant differences between the two groups with regard to childbirth knowledge and attitudes, which may indicate …

The Effects Of Prey Vulnerability, Density, And Patch Replenishment In An Operant Analogue Of Foraging, Michael James Dewulf May 1988

The Effects Of Prey Vulnerability, Density, And Patch Replenishment In An Operant Analogue Of Foraging, Michael James Dewulf

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Foraging behavior has recently become a popular area of research with which ethologists, behavioral ecologists, and experimental psychologists converge their traditionally separate disciplines into a more multidisciplinary framework. Ethologists and behavioral ecologists usually study foraging as it occurs in the natural environment or the "field," while experimental psychologists contrive laboratory simulations of foraging and make the assumption, sometimes incorrectly, that generalization occurs across settings, situations, and species. Scientific advances are now beginning to occur in the ability of laboratory researchers to better simulate foraging as it occurs in the field. Field researchers are also becoming more willing to accept these …

The Popularity Of Integration Models, 1980-1985, James D. Foster Jan 1988

The Popularity Of Integration Models, 1980-1985, James D. Foster

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Farnsworth’s five integration models were used to categorize integration articles published in the Journal of Psychology and Theology between 1980 and 1985. In addition, the graduate education of article authors was examined to determine if educational background influenced integration approach. Of the 177 articles reviewed, 52 reported research and 76 were considered integration articles. Results of the review indicate that one integration model accounts for nearly two-thirds of the integration work presented in JPT during this period and that differences in educational preparation do not produce preferences for particular integration approaches.

A Charisma Model Of Telepathic Communication, James M. Donovan Jan 1988

A Charisma Model Of Telepathic Communication, James M. Donovan

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

This paper opened by making some general criticisms of the state of parapsychological research: that it suffered from a lack of external validity and from uncritical acceptance of a flawed paradigm. The charisma model was offered as an attempt to rectify these problems. It allows for laboratory experiments to be designed which closely approximate genuine human interactions by shifting the paradigm for telepathy from that of energy transfers to one of communication events.

Monitoring External Memory, Paula T. Hertel Jan 1988

Monitoring External Memory, Paula T. Hertel

Psychology Faculty Research

The proposal that guides this research is that organizational structures of external memories, like those of internal memories, play an important role in monitoring knowledge. Previous evidence for such a relation was obtained in a laboratory experiment. Here, I report the results of a survey of faculty at Trinity University. They judged their confidence in knowledge related to their research and described their external memories (office files and bookshelves). The more confident among them had read and stored more information; they also maintained the more organized offices. In multiple-regression analyses, organization was the best predictor of confidence.

A Study Of The Relationships Between Hemispheric Asymmetries And Intellectual Abilities, Anne Mcshane May 1987

A Study Of The Relationships Between Hemispheric Asymmetries And Intellectual Abilities, Anne Mcshane

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study investigated the functional significance of cerebral asymmetries. Width measurements of the human brain were derived from computerized tomographic (CT) films and related to intellectual variables as determined by the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale Revised (WAIS-R). Subjects were adults of both sexes who had been referred for neurologic examination and were diagnosed as having no abnormalities (N=28). Reasons for referral included headache, dizziness, or to rule out central nervous system damage following various types of trauma. The asymmetry of hemispheric widths (left minus right) in the frontal, temporoparietal, and occipital areas was correlated with Verbal IQ minus Performance IQ …

2. Science, Technology, And Intelligence, Earl Hunt

The Influence of Cognitive Psychology on Testing

The intelligence test has been cited as psychology's most important technological contribution to society. Whether this is good or ill can be debated (Eysenck, 1979; Gould, 1981; Herrnstein, 1971; Kamin, 1974). Certain facts are not really subject to debate . Psychologists can and have developed "standardized interviews" that, on a population basis, provide a cost effective technique for personnel classification in industrial, military, and some government settings. However, the tests are very far from perfect indicators. Validity coefficients between tests and performance ratings typically range in the .3 to .5 range (i.e. , from 10 to 25% of the variance …
