Strain Differences In Alcohol Preference On Guinea Pigs And Experimental Manipulation Of Preference By Forced Alcohol Consumption, Gerald L. Appelman
Strain Differences In Alcohol Preference On Guinea Pigs And Experimental Manipulation Of Preference By Forced Alcohol Consumption, Gerald L. Appelman
Masters Theses
Introduction
The study of the determinants of alcoholism, one of the most perplexing diseases of mankind, entered its most fruitful era of discovery in the laboratory of the animal researcher. A pioneering study of the determinants of alcohol consumption by Richter (1940) indicated that laboratory rats show a preference for alcohol over water beginning at 1.8 per cent ethanol (v/v) solution, and continue to prefer alcohol over water up to a 6 per cent ethanol (v/v) solution. Richter made two important contributions to alcohol research which had broader implications than the presentation of an index of alcohol consumption in rats. …

Effects Of Delay Of Reinforcement On Problem Solving Behavior, Verne R. Bacharach
All Master's Theses
This study was designed to investigate the effects of delay of feedback in a programmed instruction task, retention, and subsequent problem solving behavior. The instructional material in symbolic logic was specifically presented in such a way as to introduce certain basic logical concepts and mechanical procedures in a logically coherent body of knowledge.

Tester's Race Influence On Hostility Manifestations On The D-A-P'S Of Negro Culturally Deprived Children, Doris Diamant Machtinger
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The main purpose of this study is to determine the effects of the race of an examiner upon hostility indicated through drawings of a person made by culturally deprived Negro children. Spontaneous drawings by children have been long suspected of holding a key to the psychology of child development. The history of psychological research on children's drawings has been reviewed by Harris (1963). He found that as early as 1885 Ebenezer Cooke published an article on children's drawings in which he described the successive stages of development as he observed them. Between 1885 and 1908 many studies were conducted on …

Conditioned Suppression In Humans, Eric W. Pott
An Experimental Study Of Three Programed Methods, David Robinson Grove
An Experimental Study Of Three Programed Methods, David Robinson Grove
Master's Theses
All programed training makes use of successively presented units of information, usually accompanied by a test question and usually providing the subject with. immediate knowledge of whether his answer is right or wrong. The purpose of a program whose assimilated data is in questions and answers is to shape a series of responses into a complex act.
Within this common framework there is--for psychologists, at any rate--a difference between two schools of thought which dominates the field and is reflected in the tasks and types of programs given to the trainee.
The question now becomes one in determining the "best …

A Revision Of The Morgan Test Of Logical Reasoning, Fred K. Mccoy
A Revision Of The Morgan Test Of Logical Reasoning, Fred K. Mccoy
Master's Theses
Do we learn to reason logically just as we learn grammar or estimating distances? Philosophers usually say we do and have taught logic as a discipline for thousands of years. They are generally not content to teach "about" logic, or in the history of it; they generally state their intent is to teach "logic for everyday thinking". Appendix VI is a personal communication to the author from a philosopher stating this clearly and comparing the skill of logical reasoning with the skill of using grammar.
Or is logical reasoning a relatively inherent trait, as intelligence is generally assumed to be? …
A Study Of The Function Of Visual Imagery, Type Of Mediator, And Associative Frequency In Induced Mediation Paradigms, Ted Christiansen
A Study Of The Function Of Visual Imagery, Type Of Mediator, And Associative Frequency In Induced Mediation Paradigms, Ted Christiansen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Bugelski and Sharlock (1952) credit McGeoch with saying that although the concept of mediation was an old one, it had generated more discussion than experimentation. Bugelski and Sharlock in commenting on McGeoch's statements had this to say, "The concept of mediation is of great potential value for the psychological analysis of learning, thinking, and insight." (Bugelski and Sharlock, 1952, p. 334) The views of Bugelski and Sharlock represent the current thinking in verbal learning circles relevant to the importance of mediation in symbolic forms of behavior. The experimental emphasis, at the present time, is upon the conditions underlying the process. …

Effects Of Radiation Upon Consumption Of Alcohol As A Discriminated Fluid Stimulus In The Rat, Joseph A. Straka
Effects Of Radiation Upon Consumption Of Alcohol As A Discriminated Fluid Stimulus In The Rat, Joseph A. Straka
Masters Theses
Introduction
In the recent history of psychology, considerable interest has arisen concerning the use of radiation (usually as a UCS fitted into a classical conditioning paradigm) to effect changes in behavior. Mechanisms by which radiation induces behavioral changes are obscure, and psychology, along with the disciplines of physiology and medicine, has been attempting to clarify variables in operation.
The study of drug {including alcohol) effects upon behavior has had a somewhat parallel development in the field of psychology in terms of its recency and the obscure nature of the variables operating upon resultant behavior.
These two areas of interest have …

Creativity And Deviant Set Responding In Third Grade Children, Elizabeth S. Waller
Master's Theses
This study will be an investigation of the relationship between test scores of creativity, according to the Minnesota Tests of Creative Thinking (Torrance, 1960), and teacher ratings of creativity for third grade children. The hypothesis that highly creative individuals tend to give deviant response patterns on the PRT will also be tested.
An Investigation Of The Novelty Effect In Programed Instruction, Frederick Sale Jr.
An Investigation Of The Novelty Effect In Programed Instruction, Frederick Sale Jr.
Master's Theses
The present study was designed to overcome, at least to some extent, the problems by using older, experimentally naive subjects am shorter programs. A comparison is made between successive performances by a group of college students on a series of three programs. The null hypothesis is that there will be no significant differences between performances on the three programs. On the other hand, significant decreases in effectiveness of performance by the subjects on the successive program could be taken as evidence that the expected novelty effect operating initially in the learning situation dissipates with increasing exposure of the subjects to …
An Examination Of The Phenomenon Of Preference For Bar Pressong Over Freeloading, Phyllis Thomson
An Examination Of The Phenomenon Of Preference For Bar Pressong Over Freeloading, Phyllis Thomson
Honors Projects
Since the discovery of the law of effect, psychologists have been investigating a number of the parameters of reinforcing stimuli. The law of effect states that a response is learned, or not learned, depending upon the events (effects) that follow it. To evaluate the aspects of reinforcing stimuli. typically an organism is deprived of food or water and an increase in the probability or speed of a response is noted when small amounts of food or water are made to follow a response. Using this type of paradigm, characteristics of reinforcing stimuli which have been investigated are number of reinforcers, …

The Behavioral Effects Of Partial Reinforcement As A Function Of The Stimulus Similarity Of The Intertrial Interval, Dennis L. Mclaughlin
The Behavioral Effects Of Partial Reinforcement As A Function Of The Stimulus Similarity Of The Intertrial Interval, Dennis L. Mclaughlin
Master's Theses
Although Pavlov (1927) and Skinner (1938) had published articles dealing with the effects of less than 100% reinforcement upon acquisition and extinction, it was not until the Humphrey's investigation (1939) that partial reinforcement became an enigma for leaning theorists. Hull's theory came under the sharpest criticism because with a decrease in the number of reinforcement in acquisition there was not a corresponding decrease in habit strength as measured by resistance to extinction. Despite much criticism, Hull did not deet it necessary to consider the problem of partial reinforcement in his Principles of Behavior (1943). Humphreys, on the other hand, proposed …
