Different Ministries, Different Means, One God! -A Theological Opinion On The Racial Issue, Kenneth F. Korby Feb 1970

Different Ministries, Different Means, One God! -A Theological Opinion On The Racial Issue, Kenneth F. Korby

Concordia Theological Monthly

Consideration of the racial issue in the context of social reform has often been marked by a profound confusion of the Law and the Gospel. As a result, rather ill-defined issues have been confounded by a darkening of the light itself. The Law has not been used lawfully, and the Gospel has not been employed evangelically. The church in relation to culture has been seen as a "Statue of Liberty" that bears the torch of social reform, holding it high in the air as she leads mankind to a better society. She has been viewed as the "conscience of society," …

The Gospel Approach To Counseling, Kenneth Siess Jun 1969

The Gospel Approach To Counseling, Kenneth Siess

Concordia Theological Monthly

Pastors are discovering today that the issue of pastoral counseling comes up repeatedly, both in their pastoral practice and in their study. A survey conducted several years ago revealed that of the people interviewed 42 percent indicated that they sought out a clergyman as their first source for help in an emotional crisis in their lives. Most pastors can attest readily to the reality of such a statistic. Day after day they are being sought out by people who find themselves in some kind of stress and are looking for help. In response to this demand pastors are becoming increasingly …

The Gospel And The Spiritual Life Of The Pastor, John Damm Jun 1969

The Gospel And The Spiritual Life Of The Pastor, John Damm

Concordia Theological Monthly

And yet, though the requirements of this biblical and confessional call to a life of personal prayer and meditation have not changed, the circumstances of contemporary life apparently make it difficult for today's busy pastor to fulfill these requirements. William Hulme suggests that it is often embarrassing to question a person about his prayer life. "Well, it's not what it should be" is the usual response.

Some Implications Of Selected Studies Of Psychosomatic Medicine For The Pastoral Ministry, Bruce Hartung

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This thesis will concentrate on selected aspects of the work of the field of psychosomatic medicine. Chapters II through IV will attempt to clarify the general and accepted usage of the term "psychosomatic" and some of the theoretical formulations of what "psychosomatic" really means. The fifth chapter will specialize in the area of research done on the psychosomatic aspects of cancer. Most of the research material is found in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine, although it is not confined to that journal exclusively. The sixth chapter will deal briefly with the nature of the healing ministry of Jesus and His concern …

The Role Of The Self In Counseling And Its Application To Pastoral Counseling, David Ludwig Oct 1968

The Role Of The Self In Counseling And Its Application To Pastoral Counseling, David Ludwig

Concordia Theological Monthly

Recent experimentation has shown that what a person thinks of himself, that is, his self-concept, is very important in his ability to adjust to life's problems. This article will examine the importance which the self-concept plays in counseling and the way in which pastoral counseling will deal with this self-concept. Since the aim of secular counseling (and pastoral counseling to a large extent) is to help the individual adjust to his marital and other situational difficulties, this article will show that the counselor must be concerned with the typical low self-feelings of his counselee and should try to adopt a …

Sexuality, Marriage, And Divorce In 1 Corinthians 6:12-7:16, Walter J. Bartling Jun 1968

Sexuality, Marriage, And Divorce In 1 Corinthians 6:12-7:16, Walter J. Bartling

Concordia Theological Monthly

No other social institution can begin to compete with marriage as a subject of ethical concern and reflection on all levels and in all periods of Biblical thought (for example, the opening chapters of Genesis, specific regulatory injunctions in the Torah, the ethical message of the prophets, wisdom literature - both canonical and extracanonical, the Sermon on the Mount, the Tables of Duties in Paul and Peter). Equally important for a study of marriage are the varying patterns of marital and familial life reflected in passing references and allusions in historical accounts (for example, the patriarchal family history, the chronicles …

Dialogical Preaching, Harold Deye May 1968

Dialogical Preaching, Harold Deye

Bachelor of Divinity

Dialogue is the big word in communication today, and it is a principle that those who work in group dynamics have put to good use. It is the purpose of this paper to demonstrate that principles of dialogue--principles which have proven their value in group dynamics--are useful, indeed necessary, in preaching, if real communication is going to take place. Implicit in the concept of dialogical preaching is the understanding that preaching is not a one-way phenomenon--from pulpit to pew--but that the listener has a function and responsibility in the communication that takes place on Sunday morning, both in response to …

Premarital Guidance In Military Pastoral Care, Edward Schneider May 1968

Premarital Guidance In Military Pastoral Care, Edward Schneider

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Clergymen are in an advantageous position to give premarital counseling. Some young people take part in family life education if it is offered. Others do not formally study family living before they make definite marriage plans. In preparation for their wedding they do make themselves available to the clergyman whom they have selected to perform their ceremony. The clergyman can use the opportunity to educate the couple to deal with the stresses of family living. He can help the partners prepare themselves for their roles as husband and wife and for the demands which will accompany their marriage. He can …

Overview Of Pastoral Counseling, Leonhard C. Wuerffel Sep 1967

Overview Of Pastoral Counseling, Leonhard C. Wuerffel

Concordia Theological Monthly

In his editorial preface to a volume titled An Introduction to Pastoral Counseling, Wayne Oates makes the observation: "The pastor, regardless of his training, does not enjoy the privilege of electing whether or not he will counsel with his people. … His choice is not between counseling or not counseling, but between counseling in a disciplined and skilled way and counseling in an undisciplined and unskilled way." Recent studies have also made it very clear that pastors hold a central and strategic position as counselors in today's society. Clinebell succinctly phrases the challenge: "It is obvious that clergymen are on …

The Church's Approach To The Rehabilitation Of Juvenile Delinquents Through An Institutional Setting, Leonard Laetsch May 1967

The Church's Approach To The Rehabilitation Of Juvenile Delinquents Through An Institutional Setting, Leonard Laetsch

Bachelor of Divinity

Christian concern for one's fellow man finds its roots in the example for all Christian living, in Christ Himself. As He was vitally concerned about the welfare of His contemporaries, so Christians through-out the ages have tried to reflect a similar concern for their contemporaries. Christians desire that all men come to a knowledge of Christ Jesus as the Savior and Redeemer of the world, Who brings a new way of life both in this world and in the world to come. Whenever a follower of Christ sees acts of delinquency, he becomes concerned because he recognizes them as results …

What Are The Contrasting Contributions To The Problem Of Guilt In Pastoral Counseling Of Client-Centered Therapy And Reality Therapy, Marc Kluender May 1967

What Are The Contrasting Contributions To The Problem Of Guilt In Pastoral Counseling Of Client-Centered Therapy And Reality Therapy, Marc Kluender

Bachelor of Divinity

This research paper is an investigation of the following question: What are the contrasting contributions to the problem of guilt in pastoral counseling of client-centered therapy and reality therapy? It is important for the reader to know why the area of guilt was chosen for study. First of all, guilt is a universal problem of mankind. Paul Tournier says, "It is abundantly clear that no man lives free of guilt. Guilt is universal." This does not mean that modern man is constantly asking about his guilt

The Doctrine Of Man In Contemporary Existential Psychiatry And Its Adequacy In Christian Pastoral Counseling, Thomas Hammond May 1967

The Doctrine Of Man In Contemporary Existential Psychiatry And Its Adequacy In Christian Pastoral Counseling, Thomas Hammond

Bachelor of Divinity

It would indeed by an exhausting search to try to trace the social and historical origins of the various therapeutic disciplines and far beyond the scope of this paper. This paper is here concerned only with existentialism and its influence upon the contemporary psychiatric scene in a way described by Pattison above.

In the opening section of this paper, an exploration is made of the leading characteristics of five groups of problems which the college student faces.

Guilt And The Terminal Patient-Some Basic Considerations For Pastoral Care, Gilbert Mueller May 1967

Guilt And The Terminal Patient-Some Basic Considerations For Pastoral Care, Gilbert Mueller

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this study is twofold. First, the aim is to take a closer look at the influence and power of guilt in the personality and life of the terminal patient. Secondly, the aim is to structure an evangelical pastoral approach to the terminal patient that will best serve to overcome all guilt and enable the patient to use the time remaining to him in the fullest possible fellowship with, and service to, God and fellowmen, and to victoriously meet a meaningful death.

The Suicidal Person And Pastoral Care, Donald Wunrow

Master of Divinity Thesis

This paper comprises an examination of the problem of suicide, particularly the dynamics operative in the potentially suicidal individual, and the dynamics operative in a pastoral approach to suicide prevention. Towards An Understanding Of And Pastoral Approach To The Potential Suicide, Allan Bruck Nov 1966

Towards An Understanding Of And Pastoral Approach To The Potential Suicide, Allan Bruck

Bachelor of Divinity

That suicide is such a destructive force in the lives of men is reason enough to undertake a serious study of this problem. For the pastor, however, there is a more impelling reason for such study: in his pastoral ministry, the clergyman will be confronted by the potential suicide and will be forced to influence his course of action, either for the better or for the worse. This paper would serve as an introduction to the problem of suicide, and, hopefully; as a motivation for further pastoral study.

The Church's Approach To Death And The Funeral, William Matzat Nov 1966

The Church's Approach To Death And The Funeral, William Matzat

Master of Divinity Thesis

This paper, therefore, will attempt to point out the approach which the church should take regarding the various cultural practices prevalent in the American funeral rite. After a brief historical perspective, it will examine the theological concepts of the body, death and the resurrection, and the psychological concepts of grief and mourning. With this as a basis for analysis, some of the cultural practices of the American funeral rite will be considered.

Reading Programs In Theology: An Overview Of Pastoral Care, Harry G. Coiner, David S. Schuller Oct 1966

Reading Programs In Theology: An Overview Of Pastoral Care, Harry G. Coiner, David S. Schuller

Concordia Theological Monthly

In the midst of the intensifying "explosion of knowledge," the speed with which cultural changes are taking place, and an increased number of specialists, clergymen now are keenly aware of the need for continued professional growth. Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, is attempting to meet part of this need. The ideal answer, of course, lies in intensive retraining in terms of graduate programs, summer school study, and quarter-long sabbaticals from the parish for concentrated study. Regional institutes and workshops offer another level of educational experience.

The Constitutive Nature Of A Christian Marriage And Its Application Toward Pastoral Practice In A Remarriage Situation, Walter Koehler

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

It is the thesis of this paper that there is a further dimension of love and faith which is operative among Christian spouses within their marriage relationship by virtue of their relationship to God in Christ Jesus that warrants the appellation “Christian marriage" in the fullest sense of the term. The term "marriage" will be understood in this paper within the context and dimension of this distinctive feature.
