For the Christian preacher Jesus Christ the Lord is both the model and the message. Our purpose is concerned with Him as the model. Observation reveals that modern preaching is desperately in need of such a model. This thesis may serve to stimulate interest and provide thoughts and hints concerning the preaching skill of the Savior that will lead to public preaching akin to His.

It is an interesting phenomenon, and one entirely in keeping with the lessons of church history, including the history of dogma, that a period of intense interest in doctrinal matters and in doctrinal discussions in any church-body may be followed by a period which is characterized by evidences of fatigue and of being surfeited with studies and discussions of this nature. In other words, we may expect periods of externalization to follow generations of the required emphasis on Scriptural doctrine in its fulness and comprehensiveness.

One of the strangest distinction which is observed when men are being trained for the ministry and, for that matter, when men are in the ministry, is that which prompts ministers to lay just about the exclusive emphasis of their office on preaching, that is, on delivering the sermons and addresses in public gatherings of the Christian congregation. In the year 1516 Luther had been called as pastor of St. Mary's, or the City Church of Wittenberg, and at once began to expound the catechism to his congregation. Beginning in June and continuing to February, 1517, he preached on the Ten Commandments, following up this series by another on the Lord's Prayer, February till April.
