A Conversation On “Confucius” With Daniel A. Bell, Alec Ash
A Conversation On “Confucius” With Daniel A. Bell, Alec Ash
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
The film Confucius premiered in Beijing last month, to a backdrop of controversyover Avatar being dropped from cinemas to make way for more patriotic fare. I saw the film last weekend with Chinese student friends, and we couldn’t hold back the occasional open snigger: in a word, Confucius is cornier than maize. It also raises interesting questions about the selective interpretation and political uses that modern China makes of its ancient Confucian tradition.
I put some of these questions to Daniel A. Bell, Professor of Philosophy at Tsinghua University, who has written widely on Confucianism (including pieces for The China …
Civil Society Sector And Political Change: An Interview With Catherine Lim, Lien Centre For Social Innovation
Civil Society Sector And Political Change: An Interview With Catherine Lim, Lien Centre For Social Innovation
Social Space
Singapore is a society undergoing transitions. With a burgeoning migrant community, the advent of integrated resorts with casinos and an arguably increasingly effervescent non-profit, civil society sector, Singapore looks to be a society that is rapidly opening up. Yet, as writer and political commentator Catherine Lim controversially proposes, civil society and non-profit activists cannot create change without getting their voices heard and actively participating in the political process. She shares with Social Space, her thoughts on the indispensable ingredients for openness and political engagement in a society that wants to be truly global.

Amazigh Legitimacy Through Language In Morocco, Sarah R. Fischer
Amazigh Legitimacy Through Language In Morocco, Sarah R. Fischer
Human Rights & Human Welfare
Contemporary Morocco rests at a geographic and developmental crossroads. Uniquely positioned on the Northwestern tip of Africa, Morocco is a short distance away from continental Europe, cradled between North African tradition and identity, and Western embrace. The landscape is varied: craggy mountains trail into desert oases; cobbled streets of the medina anchor the urban centers; mud homes dot the rural countryside. Obscured from the outside observer, behind the walls of the Imperial cities and between the footpaths of village olive groves, Morocco’s rich and diverse Arab and Amazigh cultures and languages circle one another in a contested dance. Morocco’s identity …

We Call Ourselves By Many Names: Storytelling And Inter-Minority Coalition-Building, Celina Su
We Call Ourselves By Many Names: Storytelling And Inter-Minority Coalition-Building, Celina Su
Publications and Research
Scholars debate whether new immigrants will join minority native-born groups, especially African-Americans, in battling racial disparities, income inequalities, and discrimination in the United States. Although scholars have investigated inter-minority coalition-building in the context of electoral politics, a substantial share of newer immigrant social and political action has not been formalized. Social change organizations play an integral role in less formalized politics. The article draws upon ethnographic data on two case study organizations to investigate how they built coalitions between immigrants and non-immigrants. It pinpoints the ways in which they engaged in storytelling to emphasize multiple identity – namely, how any …
Evaluating The Vice Presidency Using The Effective Model: A Look At Gore And Cheney, Trisha Miller
Evaluating The Vice Presidency Using The Effective Model: A Look At Gore And Cheney, Trisha Miller
Masters Theses
Historically, the office of the Vice President has been one of little importance. The Mondale vice presidency transformed the office into one of more prestige. Significant' changes have occurred with recent vice presidents, Al Gore and Dick Cheney. For this reason, a way to evaluate the vice presidents becomes imperative. Using the Hargrove model for presidential effectiveness, an applicatio:q can be made to the vice presidencies of Gore and Cheney. The research questions addressed are: vVere Albert Gore and Richard Cheney eventful or event-making vice presidents? Were they effective? The analysis found Gore to be effective while Cheney was not …

The Other Forgotten War: Understanding Atrocities During The Malayan Emergency, Christi Siver
The Other Forgotten War: Understanding Atrocities During The Malayan Emergency, Christi Siver
Political Science Faculty Publications
In this chapter, I briefly outline the dependent variable in this case, the various units actively engaged in combat in Malaya between 1948 and 1952. I then explore the most common explanations for the Scots Guards’ actions and reveal why they are not helpful in explaining why other units did not similarly kill civilians. To better understand this variation, I explore three alternative explanations: Did the military socialize units in the laws of war and appropriate behavior toward civilians? Did government leaders encourage units to kill civilians? Finally, did different units’ subcultures make them more likely to kill civilians? I …

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
The French Communist Party (PCF) played an instrumental role in giving a voice to a segment of the population that was otherwise poorly represented in democracy. This paper attempts to illustrate the origins of communism in France by drawing on French history to connect a unique and separate branch of thought, beginning with Jean-Jacques Rousseau. From Rousseau's ideals on the evil of private property and his disdain for the rule of law being merely a tool to support the existing ruling class, through the Jacobins of the French Revolution, and continued by the French Socialists of the Nineteenth Century, it …

Rules Of Misrule, Meghan Forgione
Honors Scholar Theses
The project seeks to offer an alternative interpretation of sport culture in Renaissance England with respect to theater and football. I seek to show how sport culture, although seemingly threatening to the state, actually reinforces the monarchy due to its ability to provide the people with a controlled social release. The prose explores the function of carnival in sport culture and the way in which the two are manifested in football and theater in the Renaissance.

Some Interviews (And Answering A Question I Wasn’T Asked)
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
I’ve recently been lucky enough to be asked to do a couple of radio interviews to promote Global Shanghai, 1850-2010: A History in Fragments, and also to get an opportunity to explain what I was trying to do in the book to various journalists working for Chinese and English language publications. This is a very nice development because I wrote the book with general readers as well as academics in mind, and because I hoped that my ideas about Shanghai would start to make their way into Chinese as well as English language discussions of the city’s past, present, and …

Negotiating With Separatist Terrorists, Dottie Bond
Negotiating With Separatist Terrorists, Dottie Bond
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
It is in the interest of this thesis to investigate why governments negotiate with separatist terrorists, and why those negotiations succeed or fail. The four cases analyzed in this thesis include: Sri Lanka and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, (1983-2009); Russia and the Chechen Republic, (1994-2009); Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization, (1993-1994); and Great Britain and the Irish Republican Army, (1985-2009). In this study, four basic questions are addressed: When and why do governments agree to negotiate with separatist terrorists? Is negotiation a viable solution to ending historic ethnic conflicts? Are certain peace agreements and negotiation strategies more …

Stephen MacKinnon is a Professor of History at Arizona State University whose most recent book (reviewed by Nicole Barnes on China Beat last August) is Wuhan 1938. He has an abiding interest, as this post shows, in the history of Western journalists in China–an interest that led to publication of earlier books such asAgnes Smedley. During the final three years of his life, I collaborated with Ying Ruocheng on his autobiography in English. Coughlin And Cleveland, Karen G. Ketchaver
Masters Theses
Father Charles E. Coughlin was one of the most prominent, and most controversial, figures in the United States in the 1930s and in the early years of the 1940s. This Canadian-born cleric rose from the life of an ordinary parish priest to becoming one of the leading radio phenomena of his day, masterfully using the new medium to command a vast audience. Coughlin began his radio career addressing religious subjects, but he expanded into the realm of politics by the early 1930s. His views became more and more extreme, and, by the latter part of the decade, he became increasingly …
