Imagining The Demos In The Demos: Mob Discourse In Thai Politics, William A. Callahan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

eryone believes to some degree that wolves howl at the moon, or weigh two hundred pounds, or travel in packs of fifty, or are driven crazy by the smell of blood. None of this is true. The truth is we know little about the wolf. What we know a great deal about is what we imagine the wolf t

The Scope Of Abortion Rights Since Roe V. Wade And The Next Tier: The Right To Access, Thomas Wayne Gaylord '94 May 1994

The Scope Of Abortion Rights Since Roe V. Wade And The Next Tier: The Right To Access, Thomas Wayne Gaylord '94

Honors Projects

Since the Supreme Court's 1973 decision in Roe v. Wade, abortion has occupied a lot of the Court's time and energy. Beyond the legalization of the procedure, the Court has had to wrestle with several related issues, as well. Ranging from parental consent laws to waiting periods, from state-and federal-funding denials to procedural regulations, the Court has ruled on many abortion-related issues, most of them more than three times. Although most of these issues were ruled on in Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania v. Casey (1992), the Court's invocation of the "undue burden" test will probably cause the Court as …

A Reappraisal Of Diversification In The Federal Courts: Gender Effects In The Courts Of Appeals, Donald R. Songer, Sue Davis, Susan Haire May 1994

A Reappraisal Of Diversification In The Federal Courts: Gender Effects In The Courts Of Appeals, Donald R. Songer, Sue Davis, Susan Haire

Faculty Publications

Prior scholarship on the effect of the increasing number of female judges leads to three contrasting sets of expectations. Early writings and views of affirmative-action activists suggested that female judges would be more liberal than male judges. On the other hand, a series of empirical studies suggest that we should expect no gender differences. In contrast to both of these perspectives, several feminist scholars suggest that women will be more liberal only when that position expresses support for full participation in the community. These contrasting expectations were tested by analyzing the votes of appeals court decisions in three issue areas. …

No-Fault Marital Dissolution: The Bitter Triumph Of Naked Divorce, J Herbie Difonzo May 1994

No-Fault Marital Dissolution: The Bitter Triumph Of Naked Divorce, J Herbie Difonzo

San Diego Law Review

In this Article, the author examines the origins of the no-fault divorce movement, concluding that the abandonment of fault grounds was conceived as a conservative measure intended to facilitate the reversal of the escalating divorce rate and to replace traditional marital dissolution with therapeutic divorce. This reform collapsed at mid-point, achieving only the jettisoning of divorce grounds. The author argues that an unintended consequence of the reform battle was the transformation from mutual consent divorce, the operating milieu for most of the twentieth century, into divorce on demand. The author concludes that this transformation has resulted in a significant loss …

The Atlantic Conference At Argentia (9-12 August 1941) The Anglo-American Agreement On The Defeat Of Nazi Germany, John Michael Sweeney May 1994

The Atlantic Conference At Argentia (9-12 August 1941) The Anglo-American Agreement On The Defeat Of Nazi Germany, John Michael Sweeney

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

The meeting at Argentina, Newfoundland, between Prime Minister Winston Churchill and President Franklin D. Roosevelt in August 1941 was the first "summit" conference of the Second World War. It set the stage for the United States' entry into the war on the side of Great Britain and produced the Atlantic Charter, the noble statement of Western war aims. This study describes how the Nazi threat to England and the Atlantic brought the two democracies together into a de facto alliance before the United States formally entered the war. Its central theme is the "strategy of provocation" whereby President Roosevelt, certain …

Child Witnesses In Sexual Abuse Cases And The Sixth Amendment Confrontation Clause, Kelly Thuet '94 Apr 1994

Child Witnesses In Sexual Abuse Cases And The Sixth Amendment Confrontation Clause, Kelly Thuet '94

Honors Projects

The legal debate over statutes which allow special treatment for child witnesses of sexual abuse has sparked recent discussion. These statutes permit the testimony of the children to be videotaped or transmitted via one-or two-way closed circuit television into the courtroom. Critics argue these statutes violate the defendant's Sixth Amendment Confrontation Right -to be confronted by the witnesses against him/her. Supporters feel these measures are necessary to protect the interests of young victims of sexual abuse. The goal of this paper is to address the tension between society's interest in protecting child victims and the right of defendants to confront …

Post-Cold War Nationalism In Germany And Austria: A Comparative Study, Garett William Graubins '94 Apr 1994

Post-Cold War Nationalism In Germany And Austria: A Comparative Study, Garett William Graubins '94

Honors Projects

A majority of the studies concerning the European continent have focused only upon the well-chronicled sagas left behind by specific countries. Volumes have been published on the French Revolution, German Empires, Italian Fascism, the Hapsburg Empire, and the rises and falls of each individual nation. An increasingly popular euphemism is put forth in Chaos Theory, wherein a butterfly beating its wings in Japan will alter the weather in New York City. In science as in life, it is well known that a chain of events can have a point of crisis that can magnify small changes. From such a perspective, …

Tacit Cooperation Between Enemies: Two Case Studies, Kristina Handy Apr 1994

Tacit Cooperation Between Enemies: Two Case Studies, Kristina Handy

Theses and Dissertations

This research details a point of reference to understand two case studies of cooperation that developed among lower-level, or non policy-making bureaucrats during times of conflict or war. Using components of game theory, I propose that when an international conflictual relationship occurs that resembles an iterated Prisoners' Dilemma, and that meets certain conditions, tacit cooperation can emerge. Tacit cooperation consists of illicit or implied cooperation that is not sanctioned at the national policy level.

In this research I develop a framework of tacit cooperation, relying heavily upon Robert Axelrod's theory of evolutionary cooperation. With the framework in place, I then …

Guiding The Wild Heart: Steering The State Safely Between Scylla And Charybdis, Robert P. Brown Apr 1994

Guiding The Wild Heart: Steering The State Safely Between Scylla And Charybdis, Robert P. Brown

Dissertations

Organizational life and social culture compel individuals toward more radical manifestations of individualism as bureaucracy and society increasingly define personal relationships by rules, regulations and rights. Otherwise incompatible with individualism, this actually contributes to individual and group differentiation when individuals function simply as technicians without the opportunity to gain fulfillment, and they experience existential isolation, becoming detached from their moral and spiritual side. For identity in and control over their own lives, people engage in even more individualistic behavior: working, planning, attaining, or rebelling. The true meanings of freedom and individual rights are perverted and trivialized by this radical individualism …

Representing Interests And Interest Group Representation, William Crotty, Mildred A. Schwartz, John C. Green Jan 1994

Representing Interests And Interest Group Representation, William Crotty, Mildred A. Schwartz, John C. Green

Representing Interests and Interest Group Representation

Interest groups and other “group concepts” of politics dominated explanations of American government and policy-making in the 1950s and early 1960s and, as filtered through the concept of pluralism, have provided what is arguably the most lasting and perhaps the most persuasive theorizing on political decision-making in the United States. Representing Interests and Interest Group Representation explores both the strengths and weaknesses of the current research on interest groups. It points to what needs to be done, the major intellectual concerns that should guide the research, and some of the more productive ways to approach the significant research questions.

The State Of The Parties, First Edition, Daniel M. Shea, John C. Green

The State of the Parties First Edition

This volume originated in a conference entitled "State of the Parties: 1992 and Beyond" held at The University of Akron September 23-24, 1993.

This volume provides students of political parties with up-to-date information on both the state of American party organizations and controversies over how these organizations are studied. The collection focuses on new direction in party scholarship-including debates over the vitality and relevance of the two party system, the analytical usefulness of the traditional model of American parties, and the import of organizational studies.

Situating Political Liberalism, Lawrence B. Solum Jan 1994

Situating Political Liberalism, Lawrence B. Solum

Faculty Scholarship

We have another book by John Rawls, Political Liberalism, published in 1993 and the subject of this symposium. Already, Political Liberalism has been widely cited in law journals and reviewed in a variety of publications. This Foreword situates Political Liberalism in contemporary legal and political discourse. Part I places Rawls's new book in context, briefly recalling the argument of A Theory of Justice, and then exploring the influence of Rawls's work on contemporary legal thought. Part II provides a brief outline of Political Liberalism, relating its themes to the issues raised by Rawls's prior work. Part III introduces the contributions …

South Africa's Long March To Freedom: A Personal View, Aubrey Immelman Jan 1994

South Africa's Long March To Freedom: A Personal View, Aubrey Immelman

Psychology Faculty Publications

In this article I first offer a brief historical account of European white settlement, and ultimately political dominance, in southern Africa. Next, I outline how whites, and in particular Afrikaner-dominated National Party governments after 1948, achieved almost total subjugation of South Africa’s black majority through oppressive legislation and the calculated use of force. In that regard I enumerate some of the draconian laws enacted in the post-1948 apartheid state — laws that served as an impetus for black nationalism, anger, resistance, protest and, after 1960, armed struggle to achieve liberation from white oppression. Against this background, I examine salient factors …

Assassination In Modern America: Political Participation Through A Gun Barrel?, Richard Grossenbacher Dec 1993

Assassination In Modern America: Political Participation Through A Gun Barrel?, Richard Grossenbacher

Masters Theses

Assassination has been a constant companion of the world's societies from the beginning of recorded history. Only relatively recently have social scientists begun empirical study of these acts in an effort to reveal any commonalties and possible predictive traits. Investigation of the assassination phenomenon assumed a special urgency in America as violence seemed to escalate in the 1960s, which resulted in some notable research.

The present research collected data of presidential and non-presidential assassinations and attempts that occurred from 1969 through 1992 and compared the findings with the results of earlier studies.

The data indicate that presidential assaults increased in …

The Assessment Of Political Personality: A Psychodiagnostically Relevant Conceptualization And Methodology, Aubrey Immelman Dec 1993

The Assessment Of Political Personality: A Psychodiagnostically Relevant Conceptualization And Methodology, Aubrey Immelman

Psychology Faculty Publications

The purpose of this article is to narrow the conceptual and methodological gap between existing formulations in psychodiagnostic theory and current practice in political personality. It is suggested that accurate assessment of the personalities of high-level leaders can significantly improve the prediction of political outcomes but that this endeavor has been hampered by inadequate transposition from the source disciplines of personality theory and psychodiagnostics to the target discipline of contemporary political psychology. It is proposed that Theodore Millon’s personological model offers a viable integrative framework for the study of political personality. The present article explicates Millon’s model, specifies the relevance …

Regional Subcultures Of The United States, Joel A. Lieske Nov 1993

Regional Subcultures Of The United States, Joel A. Lieske

Political Science Faculty Publications

This study develops the case, theory, and statistical methodology for a new measure of American regional subcultures. Using principal component and cluster analysis on some 45 measures of racial origin, ethnic ancestry, religious affiliation, and social structure, I show how the entire population of U.S. counties can be partitioned into 10 distinctive, regional subcultures that are relatively homogeneous and contiguous. Next, I identify the cultural characteristics of each subculture and relate my new classification scheme to the work of Elazar, Gastil, Garreau, and Fischer. Finally, I compare the relative utility of this new measure with Elazar's typology in explaining the …
