The Deconstruction Of Refugees And The Reconstruction Of History, Peter W. Van Arsdale Jan 2001

The Deconstruction Of Refugees And The Reconstruction Of History, Peter W. Van Arsdale

Human Rights & Human Welfare

A review of States and Strangers: Refugees and Displacements of Statecraft, by Nevzat Soguk. Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press (Borderlines Series, No. 11) 1999. 328 pp.

I would characterize Nevzat Soguk as either a neo-liberal operating in the guise of a postmodern deconstructionist, or a post-modern deconstructionist operating in the guise of a neoliberal. This is not a trivial distinction, nor an attempt to play semantic games, but my attempt to classify a brilliant theorist (known for his work in political science) whose book has a great deal of merit—but whose writing at times seems aimed more at discursive analysis …

Incorporating Heterogeneity In Command Center Interactions, Holly A. H. Handley, Alexander H. Levis Jan 2001

Incorporating Heterogeneity In Command Center Interactions, Holly A. H. Handley, Alexander H. Levis

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

One of the many complexities of multinational coalition operations stems from differences in culture, military procedures, and command and control processes between the cooperating command centers. These differences can influence the interactions between decision makers of different command centers and can affect the outcome of the coalition operation. A coalition model, composed of individual models of the five-stage interacting decision maker model, was used in a virtual experiment. The subjective parameters included in the decision maker model can be any attribute that characterizes the heterogeneity of the decision makers. In this case, the parameters of power distance and uncertainty avoidance …

Gender Dan Politik : Kajian Kes Ke Atas Wanita Umno Dan Pas Di Terengganu Dan Selangor, Zaireeni Azmi Jan 2001

Gender Dan Politik : Kajian Kes Ke Atas Wanita Umno Dan Pas Di Terengganu Dan Selangor, Zaireeni Azmi

Student Works (2000-2009)

The achievement and glory of Malay women of high rank have been recorded in history and has a profound impact to our society today. Great respect was shown for their charisma and capability. Women's increasing participation in politics is widely acknowledged but there is little recognition that the changes are far more comprehensive than that. Women still occupy an inferior positions in politics. Thus, this thesis will deal with three main hypotheses that are; firstly, there is a gender discrimination in politics to an extent that it hinders the active participation of women in general. Secondly, the non-equality in gender …

The Global Governance Of “Good Governance”: Financial Regularization And The Construction Of Transparency And Accountability, Benjamin T. Tolosa Jr Jan 2001

The Global Governance Of “Good Governance”: Financial Regularization And The Construction Of Transparency And Accountability, Benjamin T. Tolosa Jr

Political Science Department Faculty Publications

“Good governance” has increasingly become political-economic common sense — often articulated in the call for transparency and accountability. But the question is: transparency and accountability to whom and toward what end? This essay examines the normalization of “good governance,” particularly as it is expressed as a financial discourse of corporate governance that gives primacy to the maximization of “shareholder value” and the promotion of “investor confidence” in the capital markets. I argue that this global discourse privileges institutional investors who are empowered to hold all stakeholders accountable to market expectations and valuations. While the discourse is clearly not socially neutral, …

The Social Dimensions Of A Networked World: Will The Internet Promote Productivity And Fulfillment Or Result In A More Volatile And Ruthless World?, Ross A. Miller

Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications

Technological change has the potential to have profound effects on politics, the economy, and society. Indeed, the Industrial Revolution provides ample evidence of the significant effect of technology on humankind. Today the Internet has transformed the way we communicate, learn, work, and play. What are the dangers and opportunities presented by this new technology? One hundred years from now, will society look back upon this period of technological change as one that led to a more productive and peaceful world, or will they view it as the beginning of a dark period in human history, one characterized by political instability, …

Democratization And Human Rights: Affinity Or Tension?, Sharon Healey Jan 2001

Democratization And Human Rights: Affinity Or Tension?, Sharon Healey

Human Rights & Human Welfare

A review of Democratization and the Protection of Human Rights: Challenges and Contradictions, edited by Patricia J. Campbell and Kathleen Mahoney- Norris. Westport, CT: Praeger Publishers, 1998. 140pp.

Historically, studies on democracy and human rights have considered the two as unrelated issues, and where treated as related, many scholars have assumed a positive relationship between democracy, human rights and development. The contributors to Democratization and the Protection of Human Rights, Challenges and Contradictions examine and critique some of the popular conceptions about the relationship between democracy and human rights.

Universal Human Rights And Cultural Diversity, Hilde Hey Jan 2001

Universal Human Rights And Cultural Diversity, Hilde Hey

Human Rights & Human Welfare

A review of Human Rights: New Perspectives, New Realities, edited by Adamantia Pollis and Peter Schwab. Boulder, CO: Lynne Rienner, 2000. 259pp.

The debate as to whether human rights should be considered universal or culturally relative has come a long way. In 1947, when the Commission on Human Rights considered proposals for formulating a declaration on basic human rights, the American Anthropological Association submitted a statement expressing concern about the universality of the proposed declaration. The association’s main argument was that ideas about rights and wrongs and good and evil that exist in one society are incompatible with the ideas …

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In this brief article I identify and characterize the variety of simulation methodologies relevant to political science research. Having identified them, I then recount a light-hearted tale of one successful application of a computer simulation to a real world problem of enormous significance. Extending the discussion to other examples, I discuss some of the main issues and benefits in simulation models for political science. Finally, I identify some software tools and additional resources for those who would like to learn more about using simulation methods for their own work.

Antidote: Essays Against The Socialist Indian State By Sauvik Chakraverti, New Delhi: Macmillan, 2000., Vivek Moorthy

IIMB Management Review

Sauvik Chakraverti’s colletion of essays is informative and insightful for those who have not read his newspaper column(s) or been otherwise exposed to the broad social applications of free-market ideas (as exemplified in the writings of the late Julian Simon, the Chicago school economist-cum-demographer and in the editorials of the London Economist). But even for the initiated, the length, range and the Indian content and context of these articles make the book engaging and worthwhile reading. The book comprises ten essays on the following subjects-Population, State, Development, Imperialism, Borders, Morality, Prohibitions, Money, Government and Environment. Many of the ideas he …

China's Great Power Aspirations In The Post-Mao Era, Sun Yung, Susanna Yeung Nov 2000

China's Great Power Aspirations In The Post-Mao Era, Sun Yung, Susanna Yeung

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

From the Dengist leadership onwards, China sought to increase its capabilities - economic, military, and diplomatic - in its quest for great power status in the international system. Internally, China began a series of domestic reforms in the economic, military and high-technology areas. Externally, China directed unusual energy to establishing normal relations with other major powers as well as with the Third World. These actions testify to the Chinese leadership’s aspirations and determination to build China into a strong nation. This study, taking cognizance of the endeavors begun under Deng, attempts to follow through with post-Deng China’s continuing quest for …
