A Proposal On The Law Of The Sea, Alexander Nadesan Jan 1967

A Proposal On The Law Of The Sea, Alexander Nadesan

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

There has been no agreement until now on the breadth of the territorial sea. This study proposes a uniform law on the breadth of the territorial sea. The concept of the three-mile limit is reviewed briefly. The question of national security is analyzed and the consequences of extending the breadth of the territorial sea beyond six miles is also discussed.

The Dilemma Of A Civil Libertarian: Francis Biddle And The Smith Act, Thomas L. Pahl Jan 1967

The Dilemma Of A Civil Libertarian: Francis Biddle And The Smith Act, Thomas L. Pahl

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Although society may have good reasons for protecting itself against both sedition and conspiracy, history demonstrates that statutes directed against these offenses are particularly prone to result in the abuse of power. A possibility of just such an abuse in the first application of the Smith Act - the Minneapolis Trotskyite trial of 1941 - led to a consideration of a civil libertarian caught in the cross-pressure of enforcing a law anathema to his professed liberal beliefs. The study showed that, during time of threat, internal or external, our democratic society permits our government officials, in the name of survival, …

An Analysis Of The 1964 Idaho Second Congressional District Election Campaign, Dean Maurice Hansen Jan 1967

An Analysis Of The 1964 Idaho Second Congressional District Election Campaign, Dean Maurice Hansen

Theses and Dissertations

After having been elected to Congress from Idaho's Second Congressional District in 1960 by a record vote, and re-elected in 1962, Democrat Ralph Harding was defeated in 1964 by Republican George Hansen in the face of a national Democratic landslide. The objective of this thesis was to analyze the Harding-Hanson contest and attempt to identify the factors which produced the Hansen victory. The methodology employed in this analysis included library research, a comprehensive survey of newspapers serving the Second District which covered the congressional race, correspondence and interviews with candidates, campaign managers and other involved individuals and groups, a grass-roots …

Order And Organization As Problems Of Developing Political Systems: Ghana And Nigeria, Hugh Michael Stevenson Jul 1966

Order And Organization As Problems Of Developing Political Systems: Ghana And Nigeria, Hugh Michael Stevenson

Masters Theses

Introduction

The study of political development has come to dominate that branch of the discipline of political science concerned with comparative politics. There is, however, a terminological and methodological confusion in the literature that is in need of clarification.

Tension And Rationality Of Decision Making In The International System., Preston G. Mccrossen May 1966

Tension And Rationality Of Decision Making In The International System., Preston G. Mccrossen

Political Science ETDs

"Since wars begin in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that the defenses of peace must be constructed." This first sentence in the Preamble of the Constitution of the United Nation's Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization is a concise statement of the motivation of the psychologists now involved in the study of international relations. The end of World War Two and the beginning of the nuclear arms race held special significance for these scholars. Other disciplines had shown their inability to adequately understand the nature of the international system, while at the same time demonstrating …

The Ideology Of The John Birch Society, Max P. Peterson May 1966

The Ideology Of The John Birch Society, Max P. Peterson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study is designed to examine and evaluate the basic beliefs and actions of the John Birch Society. It is not intended to determine the proper location for the Society on the American political spectrum, but to merely represent an opinion. An objective approach is intended, but the conclusion expresses a point of view, which, I hope, is clear and consistent enough to allow those who may disagree to take issue.

There is a great deal of room for disagreement on a subject such as this. The sources used in determining the content of this presentation are listed in the …

Two Views Of Non-Voting: A Critique, Stephen L. Wasby Jan 1966

Two Views Of Non-Voting: A Critique, Stephen L. Wasby

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The view that non-voting is bad is contrasted with the view that non-voting can be functional for a political system. Works by Schattschneider and Berelson et al. are examined. Limitations in their arguments are pointed out, particularly the farmer's assertion that non-voters are being manipulated and the letters' emphasis on the short-run aspects of the system. The arguments are related to traditional conceptions of democracy.

Authoritarianism And Proposition 14, Herbert Henry Foster Jan 1966

Authoritarianism And Proposition 14, Herbert Henry Foster

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In November of 1964, California voters approved by a very substantial margin the legislative measure known as Proposition 14, a hotly contested constitutional amendment which abolished all then-existing Fair Housing Legislation and prohibited local levels of government from acting in such matters in the future. This legislation was sponsored by the California Real Estate Association and essentially was a response to a recently passed Fair Housing Law known as the Rumford Act, which prohibited discrimination in the sale and rental of housing and assigned enforcement responsibilities to the State Fair Employment Practices Commission.

During the year preceding the election, the …

ACKNOWLEDGING the fact of last month's outer-space rendezvous of Gemini 6 and 7 is one thing; realization of its meaning and ultimate significance is quite another. To groundlings in Southeast Kansas, the whole magnificent but virtually incredible achievement is too far out rationally as well as spatially. Moreover, there seems to us to be a more than ample supply of earthbound (even earthy) problems which cry for attention, questions which require fuller discussion, matters more immediate than moon-shots. The contents of this winter issue demonstrate our prior involvement in matters more humane and, to us …
