WILLIAM F. SMITH, JR., reveals the depth of meaning, both for students of the American Indian and for those seeking better to know the human personality, in the historical novel, Seven Arrows. Now Chairman of the English Department at Saginaw Valley State College in Michigan, Smith has published extensively on topics dealing with American Indian literature.

Joining the parliamentary and the presidential types of democratic government, according to WALTERS. G. KOHN, is a new, French model, the "presidential prerogative system." Author of many articles on politics in Liechtenstein and the rest of Western Europe, Kohn …

Policy Dilemmas And Political Unrest In Poland, David S. Mason Jan 1983

Policy Dilemmas And Political Unrest In Poland, David S. Mason

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

The recent unrest in Poland is not simply a struggle between the workers and the regime over political freedom and economic reform. A basic cause of the unrest, as in past years, is the failure of the regime to balance adequately the conflicting policies of promoting long-term investment in industry, raising the standard of living, and reducing social class inequalities. Each of these policies represents a major goal of the regime, and of socialist ideology. The regime has not been able to emphasize all three goals simultaneously, and has shifted resources and attention from one to the other over the …

The Evolution Of The Non-Aligned Movement: Conceptual Orientations And Basic Issues, Haroub Othman

Faculty Book Chapters

With the thaw of the cold war and the emergence of detente between the superpowers, it was widely argued that the policy of non-alignment had almost lost its relevance. Behind this belief was the assumption that non-alignment was the outcome of the cold war. However, non alignment did not go into oblivion as predicted by the cold war theory. On the contrary, the Movement was able to adapt itself to the new international conditions of the 1970's and to reemerge bigorously as a major political force in the 1980's. The papers published in this volume tackle these questions from various …

Canadian & American Agriculture: Competitors? Cooperators? Or Both?, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

It is a pleasure for me to be in Toronto, for the first time ever. My wife and I honeymooned in Canada 30 years ago, so every return trip to your beautiful country is a nostalgic experience. With an 80 cent exchange rate, we really ought to come back for another honeymoon in June and stay the rest of the year! Marshall Loeb, one of our outstanding business journalists, delivered a speech a couple of years ago in which he predicted the winning nations in international economic competition for the next decade or two. His top category encompassed only five …

The Matheson Coalition, Becky Snow

Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies

In political circl~, the State of Utah is often referred to as a "hive of conservatism." Several factors seem to indicate that this reputation is well deserved. For example, recent survey data indicate that 54 percent of the voters in the state identify themselves as either strong, not so strong, or leaning Republicans--this is far above the national average of 23 percent Republican identifiers as estimated by Gallup opinion polls. Also, many political observers feel that Utah's all Republican Washington delegation currently constitutes the most conservative team in Congress. Additionally, in the Presidential Election of 1980, Jimmy Carter, the Democratic …

The Political Philosophy Of John Rawls: An Examination Of His View Of Man And Social Stability In The Just Society, Calvin Jay Mouw Aug 1982

The Political Philosophy Of John Rawls: An Examination Of His View Of Man And Social Stability In The Just Society, Calvin Jay Mouw

Masters Theses

The thesis constitutes a critical examination of Rawl's psychological assumptions in A Theory of Justice. Rawl's psychological theory, derived from Rousseau and Kohlberg and characterized by his "Sense of Justice", depends upon overly altruistic assumptions about man's nature. These assumptions, along with resultant high levels of public motivation, lead to a high degree of social instability. Rawls fails to address this instability adequately.

The alternative model developed in this thesis takes as given the demonstrated ability of human beings to cooperate with one another and bases this capacity, in the tradition of Hume, on a mechanism of sympathy which brings …

James David Barber's typology for categorizing political leaders forms the foundation for this study.
