Pathologies In De-Bureaucratic Public Organizations In Nigeria, Joseph E. Imhanlahimi
Pathologies In De-Bureaucratic Public Organizations In Nigeria, Joseph E. Imhanlahimi
Journal of African Policy Studies
Because of the nouveau and rapidly growing interests in, and acceptance of, de-bureaucratization (popularly called "deregulation" in Nigeria), as a more attractive organization concept than bureaucratization, the central concern of this paper is an identification and objective analysis of bureau-pathologies in de-bureaucratic public organizations in Nigeria, in response to those of bureaucratic organizations which have already been analysed in the literature. The major and prevalent bureau-pathologies identified and analyzed are inconsistency and unpredictability, informality and denials, unlimited or uncircumscribed flexibility, personalization, limitation of de-categorization, laziness, and goal displacement. Their effects can be summarized as the prevalence of worrying degree of …
From Importer To Exporter: The Changing Role Of Nigeria In Promoting Democratic Values In Africa, J. Shola Omotola
From Importer To Exporter: The Changing Role Of Nigeria In Promoting Democratic Values In Africa, J. Shola Omotola
Journal of African Policy Studies
This paper takes a critical look at Nigeria's changing role in the promotion of democratic values in Africa since its return to democracy in 1999. The paper argues that the changing role of Nigeria from an importer to an exporter of democracy can be understood in terms of the global wind of change; Nigeria's African centre-piece policy; perception of threats to its leadership position in Africa especially from South Africa; and the personality of Obasanjo given his international credentials and stature. The paper however notes that inherent contradictions in the domestic political economy such as nsmg poverty, inequality and politics …
The Problems Of Financing Library Services, David E. Amadasu, Matilda Ebahi Amadasu
The Problems Of Financing Library Services, David E. Amadasu, Matilda Ebahi Amadasu
Journal of African Policy Studies
Funding of libraries is a problem whether in Nigeria or anywhere in the world. The reason is that libraries are relegated to the background economically or otherwise when competing with facilities or products for limited budget or financial resources. More importantly is the fact that library service is incorporeal and cannot stand political selection. The library service does not enjoy the status of economic or private goods susceptible to price or excludability and public or social goods for which price cannot exclude users. This is the significance of library service or circulation and should therefore attract or enjoy enough budgetary …
Of Corruption And Anti-Corruption Strategies In Nigeria: The More You Look The Less You See, Sylvester Olubani Fajonyomi
Of Corruption And Anti-Corruption Strategies In Nigeria: The More You Look The Less You See, Sylvester Olubani Fajonyomi
Journal of African Policy Studies
This statement from the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria reflects the outcome of the regime's efforts at fighting corruption in its first four years (1999-2003) in office: "Some members of the Nigerian public have expressed their opinion to the effect (that) our anti-corruption crusade in the last four years has been deficient in credibility because it appeared to lack the support of the Federal Executive Council who only rarely expressed their support in public. The situation has to change with the new cabinet. Each and every one of you must do more than give a nodding support for …
Vacant Voices - An Architectural Response To Spatial Neglect, Logan G. Handwork
Vacant Voices - An Architectural Response To Spatial Neglect, Logan G. Handwork
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
Vacant Voices explores how architecture can confront and reverse urban neglect by transforming long-abandoned land into civic space. Centered on the vacant lot at 3rd Avenue and James Street in Seattle—left undeveloped for over 20 years beside City Hall—this thesis investigates how public spaces can reflect the priorities of a government and the voices of its people. Through literature from Charles Wolfe, Rem Koolhaas, and Margaret Crawford, the project builds a theoretical foundation around everyday urbanism, adaptive reuse, and spatial justice.
The methodology incorporates case study analysis, expert interviews, and iterative prototyping. Precedents such as Zuccotti Park, Boston City Hall …
The Youth Vote: The Role Of Social Media Trends In Candidate Favorability, Brooke Lynch, Adam Thal
The Youth Vote: The Role Of Social Media Trends In Candidate Favorability, Brooke Lynch, Adam Thal
Honors Thesis
Following the announcement of her 2024 presidential candidacy, Kamala Harris’s team unveiled a neon green header with the word ‘kamala’ displayed in stretched black Arial font on her X account, a reference to the popular summer album ‘brat’ by English singer Charli xcx and the subsequent popular culture trend inspired by the album. As social media becomes increasingly more utilized for political campaigns in the United States, social media trends have become more relevant in reaching voters, especially young ones. Inspired by the publicity following Harris’s use of cultural trends as well as continual research finding connections between voter activity …
The Technological Dimension Of Africa's Crsis Of Development: An Agenda For The 21st Century, Osita Agbu
The Technological Dimension Of Africa's Crsis Of Development: An Agenda For The 21st Century, Osita Agbu
Journal of African Policy Studies
This article critically examined the ways that technological underdevelopment had contributed to the deepening crises of Africa's technological backwardness. Adopting a holistic and historical approach, it tried to show how technological underdevelopment and the dearth of technologically driven approaches to addressing developmental questions had adversely affected the continent.
The article opines that beyond the technological is the fundamental understanding that the problem which Africa is facing is not just a technical one, but involves also a polical dimension which must not be ignored. It sought to explicate the question of whose technology for what, and in whose interest? It maintained …
Patterns And Determinants Of Fertility In Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 1974-1998, Asfaw Yitna
Patterns And Determinants Of Fertility In Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 1974-1998, Asfaw Yitna
Journal of African Policy Studies
Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia, reported a surprisingly low TFR level of 1.8 births per woman in the year 1994. Such a low level has never been experienced by any other large African city. In this paper, we attempt to confirm the adjusted level fertility of 2.1 births per woman and thus the fertility decline reported by the Central Statistical Authority (CSA), and to explore the important demographics, socio-economic and proximate determinants of fertility decline of Addis Ababa from 1974 to 1998.
We use data from fertility surveys of 1990 and 1995, conducted in Addis Ababa by CSA, …

Feminism, Children And Environmental Policy In Zimbabwe, Saliwe Kawewe
Feminism, Children And Environmental Policy In Zimbabwe, Saliwe Kawewe
Journal of African Policy Studies
This study utilizes a feminist perspective in demonstrating how gender intersects with socioeconomic forces of over a century of patriarchal environmental endeavors such as global modernization: imperialism and colonialism as conditions that have historically perpetuated environmental degradation in Zimbabwe as elsewhere in sub-Saharan Africa. The study examines how environmental policies of both pre and post independent Zimbabwe have had devastating consequences on the poor and marginalized, particularly women and girl children of this Third World in the nation. Additionally, the study proposes gender mainstreaming as a social networking model for socioeconomic and environmental sustainability through grassroots indigenous participation, capacity building, …
Beyond The ‘Berlin Conference/Oau Framework’: A Pan-African Analysis Of Africa’S Security Crisis, Boubacar N'Diaye
Beyond The ‘Berlin Conference/Oau Framework’: A Pan-African Analysis Of Africa’S Security Crisis, Boubacar N'Diaye
Journal of African Policy Studies
The analysis of the security, civil-military relations, and governance crises in Africa generally takes for granted the post-colonial arrangement and uses the nation-state as the unit of analysis. Invariably, the prescriptions never go beyond the confines of what could be dubbed the "Berlin Confcrence/OAU framework." The daunting security challenges Africa faces as the 21st century gets under way necessitate bold, "off the beaten path" analysis and solution that move beyond this framework and the restrictions of the antiquated principles and notions on which it is predicated: the sacrosanct national sovereignty and the "national" army as its symbol. In light of …

The Mujahedeen E-Khalq Of Iran (Mek): Agents Of Democratic Revolution Or Cultic Oppression?, Molly Jones
The Mujahedeen E-Khalq Of Iran (Mek): Agents Of Democratic Revolution Or Cultic Oppression?, Molly Jones
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis focuses on the People’s Mujahideen of Iran (MEK), an Iranian oppositional group that has engaged in a decades-long effort to depose the Iranian government. The goal of this thesis has three parts. First, it examines if the MEK should be classified as a new religious movement/cult. It also addresses the implications of such status given the MEK’s claims that it functions as a democratic entity and that it can be trusted to govern Iran in democratic fashion. Secondly, it examines if Iranian disinformation has influenced the MEK’s reputation. Thirdly, it analyses how the MEK has been able to …
Shifting Alliances: Are Black People Increasingly Identifying As Republican?, Clamont C. Mack
Shifting Alliances: Are Black People Increasingly Identifying As Republican?, Clamont C. Mack
Student Theses and Dissertations
This paper investigates claims that Black Americans are increasingly aligning with the Republican Party. Drawing on theories of party identification and political realignment, I compare competing perspectives to determine appropriate indicators of realignment within the Black community. Using quantitative analysis across several datasets, I find a modest rise in Republican identification over the past decade, but a more pronounced decline in Democratic affiliation. These findings suggest not a realignment toward the Republican Party, but rather a dealignment from the Democratic Party. This challenges popular media narratives of realignment and instead points to growing political disengagement among Black Americans.

Less than 25% of seats in Indonesia’s House of Representatives are held by women politicians. While studies have explored the topic of women in Indonesian politics, this article adopts a unique approach by examining the use of social media as a political marketing tool by women politicians in Indonesia during the 2024 pre-presidential election period. Key questions include how women politicians are portrayed on social media, how they portray themselves, and how Indonesian youths perceive them. Possible mismatches between portrayals are also considered. This study specifically analyzes and maps the characteristics of social media posts from 36 women politicians across …

Actualizing Bandung Spirit In The Contemporary World: The Study Of Indonesia And East African Countries Relations, Mansur Juned, Mohamad Hery Saripudin
Jurnal Wacana Politik
The Bandung Conference 1955 is an essential foundation of Indonesia and Eastern African nations under the scope of the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Nairobi, Kenya. Yet, contemporary trends in trade, investment, and diplomatic engagement indicate that revitalizing this spirit requires new approaches amid a global economy driven by pragmatic interests. Therefore, this paper studies how the Bandung Conference spirit of solidarity is exercised in the contemporary Indonesia and Eastern Africa nations relations especially in terms of economy and politics. The paper uses the perspective international cooperation theory in scope of the global political economy which emphasizes that there …

Deconstructing The Threat Of Technology: A Critique Of Surveillance Capitalism And Its Implications For E-Democracy, Rafif Sakti Utama, Mudiyati Rahmatunnisa, Ratnia Solihah
Jurnal Wacana Politik
This study critiques the phenomenon of surveillance capitalism in the digital era, focusing on its impact on digital democracy or e-democracy in Indonesia. Drawing from Shoshana Zuboff’s framework, surveillance capitalism leverages human behavioural data as raw material for commercial predictions, threatening privacy, fostering polarization, and weakening the digital public sphere. Using a qualitative literature-based approach and semi-structured interviews with experts and practitioners, the research validates its findings through data triangulation across journal articles, policy reports, and interview insights. The results indicate that social media algorithms contribute to the spread of disinformation, political polarization, and the manipulation of public opinion. For …
What The F**K Happened: An Analysis Of Why The Emerging Democratic Majority Theory Failed, Olivia Mitchell
What The F**K Happened: An Analysis Of Why The Emerging Democratic Majority Theory Failed, Olivia Mitchell
Honors College Theses
Despite the Democratic belief that new generations would usher in a more successful era for the party, the 2024 presidential election saw the Republican Party candidate win the popular vote for the first time in two decades. Both Harris and Trump continued the trend of using social media to appeal to young voters, relying heavily on the use of digital platforms and new media to cater to their target audiences. But their approaches varied drastically, reflecting the patterns of political engagement and activity of young Millennial and Generation Z voters, and their successes and failures served as evidence of the …

Does The Private Prison Industry Perpetrate More Staff Sexual Misconduct Than In Federal Prisons?, Abigail Lutrick
Political Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
This paper compares the reported statistics of staff-on-inmate sexual misconduct allegations in privately and federally operated correctional facilities. The federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) was first created with the goal of protecting public safety and promoting rehabilitation for criminal offenders humanely. As decades have passed, and the support for the validity of this mission has wavered, the federal government has implemented oversight and remedial programs to report on the misconduct that is evident in prison management in an attempt to curb these incidents. Previous research in this field highlights the waning reliability of institutional indicators to the success of correctional …

When 'Weird' Means 'Dangerous': Viruses And Firewalls In Affective Polarization, Nathan J. Locke
All Theses
As traditional sources of epistemic authority face declining trust, alternative narratives have gained prominence - often leveraging the emotional and cultural resonance of seemingly simple terms. In the 2024 election cycle, the term “weird” emerged as a potent meme in American political discourse. Using a memetic perspective that incorporates elements of framing theory and Social Judgment Theory, this thesis investigates the use and reaction to “weird” and its role in shaping perception of Donald Trump, his political allies, his followers, and his opposition during and immediately after the 2024 Presidential election. The memetic perspective, which views ideas as units of …
