Most people who perform a heroic act will, afterward, deny that their actions were heroic and claim that anyone would have done the same, even though that is demonstrably false (and, often, others were present who failed to act heroically at all). The literature on the psychology of heroism has never investigated why this is. This theoretical paper proposes an answer and seeks to provoke exploration of a previously unexplored topic. We note that people who undertake heroic action face a unique conflict: they embody their community’s highest values, while simultaneously breaking norms to stand apart from that community. We …

Social policies’ responsiveness to rising inflation depends in large part on whether they contain automatic indexation mechanisms, which ensure that the real value of wages and benefits expands during inflationary periods. Here we compare how the indexation of Canadian and U.S. policies on pensions, minimum wages, and food security have affected their responsiveness to the recent cost-of-living crisis. Three main conclusions emerge from our analysis. First, automatic indexation is not necessarily a silver bullet to avoid policy drift. Second, automatic indexation and its design are not the only factors that matter to determine whether high inflation leads to policy drift. …

It briefly analyzes the overlapping maritime claims, their justifications and legal aspects, and key clashes between the actors across the second half of the 20th century. The explosion of super PAC activity in presidential primaries since the 2012 election cycle prompts an examination of these organizations’ behavior and its effects on other types of committees. Specifically, this study investigates how fundraising and spending efforts by candidate-specific super PACs, or single-candidate super PACs, benefit their supported candidate’s principal campaign committee. The field of “transitional justice” refers to a range of processes and mechanisms for accountability, truth-seeking, and reconciliation that governments and communities pursue in the aftermath of major societal traumas, including civil war, mass atrocities, and authoritarianism. This relatively new field emerged in the 1980s as scholars, practitioners, and policymakers looked for guidance to support post-authoritarian and post-communist transitions to democracy in Eastern Europe and Latin America. Originating in the early 1990s with opposition to illegal commercial fishing, the movement has evolved to resist the Chana Industrial Estate Project. The research addresses key questions concerning factors sustaining the movement, tactical adaptations, societal impacts, and its reflection of Thailand’s contemporary political landscape. หลังนางไช่อิงเหวินชนะการเลือกตั้งประธานาธิบดีไต้หวันในปี ค.ศ.2016 จีนกลับมาเพ่งเล็งการดำเนินนโยบายของไต้หวัน และใช้ท่าทีที่แข็งกร้าวต่าง ๆ ต่อไต้หวันส่งผลให้ความสัมพันธ์ข้ามช่องแคบระหว่างไต้หวันและจีนกลับมาตึงเครียดอีกครั้ง ไต้หวันต้องดำเนินนโยบายต่าง ๆ เพื่อรับมือกับท่าทีอันแข็งกร้าวของจีนมาตลอดห้วงเวลา 8 ปีในตำแหน่งของเธอ แต่ยังสามารถรักษาสถานะเดิม (status quo) เอาไว้ได้ สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาเกี่ยวกับมาตรการของไต้หวันในการรับมือความแข็งกร้าวของจีน ในช่วงระหว่าง ปี ค.ศ.2016 – 2024 มีแนวทางการดำเนินนโยบายอย่างไรในการ “รับมือ” ท่าทีแข็งกร้าวของจีน จนสามารถสามารถรักษาสถานะเดิมเอาไว้ได้ตามความมุ่งหมายซึ่งผลการศึกษาพบว่าไต้หวันรับมือความแข็งกร้าวของจีนโดยการการถ่วงดุลอำนาจจากภายนอกด้วยการแสวงหาขีดความสามารถเพิ่มจาก“ชาติที่มีอุดมการณ์เดียวกัน” (like-minded nations) เพื่อให้จีนเกิดความยับยั้งชั่งใจหรือต้องคิดคำนวนความคุ้มค่าในการใช้กำลังต่อไต้หวันเพิ่มขึ้นอันเป็นไปตามแนวคิดการป้องปรามโดยการปฏิเสธ

Those who lose economic status lose more than income because they become so socially isolated that they are further frustrated through loneliness (Case and Deaton 2020). สารนิพนธ์ฉบับนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษากระบวนการประกอบสร้างความมั่นคงของไทยต่อปัญหาคอลเซ็นเตอร์ ซึ่งเริ่มต้นจากชาวจีนที่อพยพเข้ามาในไทยโดยมีเจตนาแอบแฝงทำธุรกิจผิดกฎหมายหรือเรียกว่า “จีนเทา” ซึ่งมักจะตั้งฐานปฏิบัติการคอลเซ็นเตอร์บริเวณเพื่อนบ้านของไทย และใช้ประเทศไทยเป็นทางผ่านในการหลอกหลวงคนไปเป็นแรงงานให้กับแก๊งคอลเซ็นเตอร์ โดยรูปแบบของอาชญากรรมเหล่านี้มีความซับซ้อน และเชื่อมโยงกับเครือข่ายองค์กรอาชญากรรมข้ามชาติ ซึ่งส่งผลกระทบทั้งทางเศรษฐกิจและความมั่นคงของประเทศ งานวิจัยนี้มุ่งเน้นการวิเคราะห์การตอบสนองของหน่วยงานในไทยต่อปัญหาคอลเซ็นเตอร์ที่เปลี่ยแปลงไปจากเดิม หลังจากที่ไทยถูกกระตุ้นโดยตัวแสดงบางตัว ทำให้หน่วยงานที่เกี่ยวข้องของไทยได้ออกมาตรการพิเศษต่างๆ เพื่อมาบังคับใช้กับแก๊งคอลเซ็นเตอร์โดยเฉพาะในช่วงเวลานั้นๆ ผลการศึกษา พบว่าหน่วยงานของไทยได้มีการปรับเปลี่ยนมาตรการอย่างต่อเนื่อง ทั้งในเชิงนโยบายและการบังคับใช้กฎหมาย โดยเน้นการเสริมสร้างประสิทธิภาพในการแก้ปัญหาที่ต้นเหตุและเห็นผลได้อย่างเป็นรูปธรรม ตลอดจนการประสานความร่วมมือกับหน่วยงานความมั่นคงของประเทศต้นทางและประเทศเพื่อนบ้าน อย่างไรก็ตาม ยังคงมีข้อจำกัดในด้านการบังคับใช้กฎหมาย การจัดการฐานข้อมูล และการประสานงานระหว่างหน่วยงานที่เกี่ยวข้อง

งานวิจัยชิ้นนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาพลวัตและพฤติกรรมทางการเมืองที่เกิดขึ้นในอำเภอปากพนังตั้งแต่ พ.ศ. 2544 – 2566 งานวิจัยชิ้นนี้ใช้วิธีการศึกษาโดยการวิจัยเอกสารที่เกี่ยวข้อง และการสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึก โดยมีกลุ่มตัวอย่างทั้งหมด 5 กลุ่ม อันประกอบไปด้วยนักการเมือง นักวิชาการท้องถิ่น สื่อท้องถิ่น หัวคะแนน และประชาชนในพื้นที่อำเภอปากพนัง ข้อค้นพบคือพลวัตทางการเมืองของคนอำเภอปากพนังจะแบ่งออกเป็น 3 ช่วงโดยช่วงแรกเป็นช่วงพรรคประชาธิปัตย์ตั้งมั่น (พ.ศ. 2544–2554) ปัจจัยสำคัญในการตัดสินใจในช่วงเวลานี้คือชวน หลีกภัย และความเป็นตัวแทนคนใต้ ต่อมาในช่วงเปลี่ยนแผ่นดินทางการเมือง (พ.ศ. 2562) ช่วงเวลานี้เป็นช่วงเวลาเปลี่ยนผ่านจากพรรคประชาธิปัตย์ มาเป็นพรรคพลังประชารัฐ ภายใต้การนำพลเอกประยุทธ์ จันทร์โอชา ระบบเลือกตั้งแบบจัดสรรปันส่วนผสม ซึ่งใช้บัตรเลือกตั้งหนึ่งใบแต่ได้สส. ทั้งในระบบเขตและบัญชีรายชื่อ โดยการตัดสินใจเลือกเกิดขึ้นผ่านบารมีบุคคลของพลเอกประยุทธ์ จันทร์โอชา รวมถึงนโยบายประชารัฐ จนถึงการเลือกตั้งช่วงที่ 3 เรียกได้ว่าเป็นช่วงการเมืองปากท้อง (พ.ศ. 2562-2566) กติกาบัตรเลือกตั้งกลับมากลับมาเป็นระบบคู่ขนาน ผสมกันระหว่างระบบเขตกับระบบบัญชีรายชื่อ โดยใช้บัตรเลือกตั้งสองใบอีกครั้ง และครั้งนี้แม้ว่าพรรคประชาธิปัตย์ได้หวนคืนที่นั่งอีกครั้ง แต่ไม่อาจกล่าวได้ว่าเป็นชัยชนะของพรรคประชาธิปัตย์ เเต่เพราะกลไกและเครือข่ายทางการเมืองของตระกูล “เดชเดโช” ในขณะที่พลเอกประยุทธ์ จันทร์โอชา ยังคงมีบทบาทในการเลือกตั้งครั้งนี้มาอย่างต่อเนื่อง โดยได้รับชัยชนะในคะแนน สส.แบบบัญชีรายชื่อ ทำให้เห็นว่าพฤติกรรมทางการเมืองของคนอำเภอปากพนังเปลี่ยนแปลงจากการที่ตัดสินใจทางการเมืองผ่านอุดมการณ์และตัวบุคคล เป็นให้ความสำคัญกับนโยบาย และชีวิตความเป็นอยู่มากขึ้น กล่าวคือ คนปากพนังต้องการมีนายกคนดีเช่นเดิม หากแต่จะต้องควบคู่ไปกับเรื่องปากท้องโดยจะขาดอย่างหนึ่งอย่างใดไปไม่ได้
