The Influence Of Europe On The Young Jfk, Nigel Hamilton Jun 1993

The Influence Of Europe On The Young Jfk, Nigel Hamilton

New England Journal of Public Policy

I think that of all twentieth-century American presidents, John F. Kennedy is considered — by Europeans at least — to be the most Eurocentric in his sympathies and political orientation. In the days ahead we shall be reexamining the history of the Kennedy administration in relation to Europe, but before we do, I think it might help to know the true genesis of JFK's personal attitudes towards Europe, so that we may better understand his eventual role in the history of the early 1960s: culminating in the Cuban Missile Crisis and his anti-Communist speech in Berlin in June 1963, as …

The Press And Politics: A Comprehensive Examination, Heather Long Jun 1993

The Press And Politics: A Comprehensive Examination, Heather Long

New England Journal of Public Policy

This article is based on interviews and research on the press and politicians, whose relationship is shown to be extremely controversial. Views held by members of the press, who see themselves as dutiful to their readers, are radically different from those held by politicians, who see reporters as money-hungry thieves who do not stop short of invasion of privacy for a story. The views of scholars — who attempt to make sense of the relationship — are different from both. The author attempts to amalgamate these views, assess the picture of the institutional relationship as it truly exists, and discover …

Offense Perceived, Appropriate Actions And Possible Solutions: A Research Of Censorship, Sharon K. Van Poolen Jun 1993

Offense Perceived, Appropriate Actions And Possible Solutions: A Research Of Censorship, Sharon K. Van Poolen

Masters Theses

Students at Western Michigan University were asked via a survey to read lyrics and indicate an offensiveness rating. Lyrics containing vulgar or sexual language or derogatory statements about religion received higher offensive ratings. Actions deemed acceptable in response to offensive lyrics include picketing and boycotting. Prevalent themes identified in the lyrics are antagonism toward religion, sexism and unhealthy sexual relations. Groups cited most frequently as potentially harmed by lyrics are children 5-12, adolescents and women. Respondents were questioned about participation in certain activities and what alternatives to direct censorship are acceptable. Most would prefer to be involved indirectly, for example, …

Advocacy And Diplomacy In The Great Lakes: A Case History Of Non-Governmental-Organization Participation In Negotiating The Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, Jack Manno

Buffalo Environmental Law Journal

This article describes and analyzes the role of non-governmental organizations, or NGOs, in the system of governance that has developed to manage the use of natural resources, and that management's impact on the Great Lakes ecosystem. Particular emphasis is given to the organizational history of one such NGO, Great Lakes United, and its actions and strategies in relation to the Canada-U.S. Great Lakes Water Quality Agreements, and to the negotiations leading to the 1987 Protocol to the Agreements. My more general purpose is to contribute to the development of a literature of NGO case histories in order to provide an …

The Midwest Quarterly; Vol. 34 No. 3, Arthur Scherr, Alfred Cismaru, George W. Shields, William M. Bueler, Wade Sikorski, Earl Lee, Jeanne Murray Walker, Midwest Quarterly Editors

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

In Candide, argues ARTHUR SCHERR, Voltaire's women are intelligent, resourceful, and erotic individuals, quite the equal of males, if not infrequently their superiors. Having taught history and English at Bernard Baruch College and Kingsborough Community College of the City University of New York, as well as the New York City high schools, Scherr is a self-styled "Renaissance person" who has published articles in a number of scholarly journals.

Human memory is a curious thing: it remembers what it wants to remember and forgets what it is inconvenient to remember or simply refuses to believe a contrary fact. So it is …

Dorothy Sayers On “The Lost Tools Of Learning”, Steven Alan Samson Jan 1993

Dorothy Sayers On “The Lost Tools Of Learning”, Steven Alan Samson

Faculty Publications and Presentations

The key to education is “learning how to learn.” We must first stand on the shoulders of the giants who preceded us before we can reach far enough to loose their embrace. A liberal arts education is to be liberating. But as Irving Babbitt noted, commenting on Edmund Burke, the basis of genuine liberty is an act of subordination or humility. We tend to mistake the part for the whole and exalt our partial discoveries into idols.

Book Gallery: Machine Politics, Sound Bites, and Nostalgia

In August 1991, the Political Organization and Parties Section of the American Political Science Association sponsored a workshop entitled 'Machine Politics, Sound Bites, and Nostalgia: Substantive Issues and Methodological Problems in the Study of Party Organization,' which included a panel of scholars presenting brief papers on research questions and a panel of practitioners responding from their personal experience. The results of these panels are included in this publication. The scholarly perspectives include papers presented by Leon D. Epstein, Paul S. Herrnson, Charles D. Hadley, Michael Margolis, and Kay Lawson. Applied perspectives from practitioners include comments from Michael Margolis, John Pitney, …

The Effects Of The Presidency On The Epa, Patrick Cook Jan 1993

The Effects Of The Presidency On The Epa, Patrick Cook

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

This paper is a study of how the Presidency affects, and has affected, the Environmental Protection Agency. The EPA is a relatively new agency having only been created in 1970. Therefore, I have focused my research on the individual administrations from President Nixon to President Reagan. I shall present to you trends in presidential policy towards the Environmental Protection Agency, and how they have shaped the Agency, its direction, and its effectiveness.

To place this research in context, I will begin by presenting a history of the Environmental Protection Agency. This survey will focus on major events and important pieces …

Democratic Discussion, Don Herzog, Donald R. Kinder Jan 1993

Democratic Discussion, Don Herzog, Donald R. Kinder

Book Chapters

"Democracy," remarked H. L. Mencken, "is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard." Mencken found American politics a droll spectacle and showered contempt on the dullards he named "the booboisie." Plenty of other intelligent and perceptive observers have concluded that ordinary citizens are flatly incapable of shouldering the burdens of democracy. Uninformed and uninterested, absorbed in the pressing business of private life, unable to trace out the consequences of political action, citizens possess neither the skills nor the resources required for what Walter Bagehot pithily named "government by discussion." …

Elections And Mass Politics In Yemen, Sheila Carapico Jan 1993

Elections And Mass Politics In Yemen, Sheila Carapico

Political Science Faculty Publications

Yemen's experiment in popular parliamentary elections has shaken things up in the Arabian Peninsula, the last place on earth that the United States wants to see democracy flourish. But internal political differences, profound economic crisis and Saudi hostility puts this achievement at risk.

The Effects Of Racial Polarization On African-Americans Being Elected To Public Office In St. Louis And Kansas City, Missouri, Juanita Head Walton

Theses

The purpose of this paper is to study the influence of race in the process for election and selection of candidates for city wide offices in St. Louis and Kansas City.

The data for this analysis includes census statistics and election results in the cities of St. Louis and Kansas City. In addition, I have examined campaign finance reports, official government reports and manuals, writings of experts in the field of race and politics and other research sources documented in my citations, tables, illustrations and bibliography, as well as interviews with African-Americans holding public offices and local experts in the …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

During the 1989 democracy demonstrations in China, Americans struggled to understand, and in so doing challenged their own stereotypes about the people of China. PETER SCHECKNER, who with his wife was then teaching American culture in Beijing at a tourist college, had hoped to challenge his Chinese students' stereotypes about American society and found his expectations repeatedly called into question. Author of books on D. H. Lawrence and Chartist poetry, Scheckner is Associate Professor of English at Ramapo College of New Jersey.

The great truths often present themselves to us repeatedly and in unlikely circumstances, as EUGENE KRAFT demonstrates in …

Gender, Ideology, Nation: Judou In The Cultural Politics Of China, William A. Callahan Jan 1993

Gender, Ideology, Nation: Judou In The Cultural Politics Of China, William A. Callahan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

ONE DAY IN February 1991 a Chinese film previously noted mostly for its radical use of color - Ju Dou - became an international political event. Politics and culture (once again) became intimately intertwined as China was honored with its first Oscar nomination at the same time that China was castigated for trying to censor this film, and hence control representations of "China."
