Regional Subcultures Of The United States, Joel A. Lieske Nov 1993

Regional Subcultures Of The United States, Joel A. Lieske

Political Science Faculty Publications

This study develops the case, theory, and statistical methodology for a new measure of American regional subcultures. Using principal component and cluster analysis on some 45 measures of racial origin, ethnic ancestry, religious affiliation, and social structure, I show how the entire population of U.S. counties can be partitioned into 10 distinctive, regional subcultures that are relatively homogeneous and contiguous. Next, I identify the cultural characteristics of each subculture and relate my new classification scheme to the work of Elazar, Gastil, Garreau, and Fischer. Finally, I compare the relative utility of this new measure with Elazar's typology in explaining the …

The Intellectual Grounding Of The San Francisco Committee Of Vigilance Of 1851, Jon Jeffrey Walker Jul 1993

The Intellectual Grounding Of The San Francisco Committee Of Vigilance Of 1851, Jon Jeffrey Walker

Dissertations and Theses

Vigilantism has a long history in the United States stretching back to the Regulator movement in South Carolina in 1767. These extralegal movements are distinguished from spontaneous and ephemeral mob activity by their regular organization and limited life-span. The San Francisco Committee of Vigilance of 1856 was the largest vigilante movement in American history. After a summer of vigilantism that included four hangings, the committee turned to politics and formed the People's Party which dominated San Francisco's city government for the next decade. The 1856 committee is generally considered the great exemplar of American vigilantism and has received considerable attention …

Hannah Arendt, National Socialism And The Project Of Foundation, Robert Mayer Jul 1991

Hannah Arendt, National Socialism And The Project Of Foundation, Robert Mayer

Political Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Foundation is a crucial concept in Hannah Arendt's work. She was especially interested in modern attempts, successful and unsuccessful, to found new bodies politic. Arendt maintained, however, that totalitarian movements were hostile to the project of foundation. Far from seeking to stabilize the world, totalitarianism set the world in motion and tried to keep it moving. But when we turn to National Socialist ideology itself we discover that foundation was vital to the Nazi project; Hitler understood himself as the founder of his people. Arendt's own interpretation of Nazism is mistaken, but I believe that her general theory of foundation …

Transnational Corporations Versus The State: The Political Economy Of The Mexican Auto Industry, D. C. Bennett, Kenneth Evan Sharpe

The historical-structural method employed here rejects analyses that are excessively voluntaristic or deterministic. The authors show that while the state was able to mitigate certain adverse consequences of TNC strategies, new forms of dependency continued to limit Mexico's options.

A Comparative Study Of The Members Of Citizen Advisory Committees In Two Cities, Maryam Hasan Dec 1984

A Comparative Study Of The Members Of Citizen Advisory Committees In Two Cities, Maryam Hasan

Masters Theses

This research describes and compares locally initiated citizen advisory committees in two Michigan cities, Kalamazoo and Portage. The goal of the description and comparison was to assess the differences, if any, in advisory members' definitions and perceptions of advisory committee purposes, membership characteristics, activities, organization, and members' satisfaction with advisory committee's recommendations and other activities. The study has revealed that there is no significant differences statistically or analytically between the two cities in the area of locally initiated advisory committees even though Kalamazoo is a central city of a metropolitan area with a more heterogeneous population than Portage, a suburban …

Religion In Democracy: Tocqueville's Defense, Gary Novak, Kelly Patterson Jan 1983

Religion In Democracy: Tocqueville's Defense, Gary Novak, Kelly Patterson

Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies

It is sometimes held to be paradoxical that liberal democracy has offered no sound justification of itself. For those who are citizens of liberal democracies, and therefore are concerned not only with the regime of the fatherland but a 1 so with the good regime genus, this paradox causes not only confusion. The citizen is left a so without justification for the patros: his love of the fatherland has then no rational logos. There have been various recent attempts to provide liberal democracy with the justification necessary to survive the attack of various schools. However one assesses …

Criteria For Majority Party Leadership Selection In The United States House Of Representatives : Evidence Of Institutionalization In The Collegial Style, 1962-1976, Rowena Lewis Walker Jan 1978

Criteria For Majority Party Leadership Selection In The United States House Of Representatives : Evidence Of Institutionalization In The Collegial Style, 1962-1976, Rowena Lewis Walker

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This paper will explore further the process of selection of majority party leaders in the United States House of Representatives. It will seek to show that there were certain common denominators that existed among those who were selected for leadership positions between 1962 and 1976, and that these common denominators were not present in those individuals who challenged the leaders and lost. Additionally, it will be argued that those certain qualities were particularly important to the style of leadership during that period, and that their importance to that style allowed the development of an institutionalization of the selection process during …

The Ku Klux Klan In Indiana In The 1920'S As Viewed By The Indiana Catholic And Record, Joseph M. White Jan 1974

The Ku Klux Klan In Indiana In The 1920'S As Viewed By The Indiana Catholic And Record, Joseph M. White

Graduate Thesis Collection

The Ku Klux Klan during the 1920's attained a high level of influence though not outright control in the political and social affairs of Indiana. The Klan with its nativist vision of American life regarded with hostility the deviant values represented by Negroes, Jews, Roman Catholics, and aliens. The irony of the rise of this movement in Indiana was that the population of these minorities was proportionally lower in the Hoosier state than in most other states.

America And Reconsruction, Thomas B. Grier Oct 1973

America And Reconsruction, Thomas B. Grier

IUSTITIA

Reconstruction has variously been termed "repressive. . . uncivilized" and "a sordid time" as well as "a noble experiment." Reflected in those judgments of the era is the dispute over the effects of Reconstruction. To be more correct, one might say that there has been much conjecture in determining what, in fact, Reconstruction was. Questioned also has been the role of the black man during the period; much of what he did, or was responsible for, has, like Reconstruction itself, been subject to many and varied accounts and evaluations. The intent of this paper is to examine several volumes concerned …

Rhetoric And Reality In American Political Pluralism : Jackson-Calhoun Controversy In Perspective, Margaret Spencer Wise Jan 1973

Rhetoric And Reality In American Political Pluralism : Jackson-Calhoun Controversy In Perspective, Margaret Spencer Wise

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The essential problem of politics are ancient general, and persistent. A particular political system, such as that of the United States, can be interpreted as a way of coping with recurring problems. Some of the ways a political system deals with problems may be unique, some commonplace. Because it meets its problems in a particular time and place with a special body of past experiences to go on, each political system is unique; so too the American system is unique. But because some problems have recurred ever since civilized men have tried to live together, every political system has had …

The Rise And Decline Of A Small Midwestern Town, Mitchell, Iowa, Jack D. Frisbie Jan 1969

The Rise And Decline Of A Small Midwestern Town, Mitchell, Iowa, Jack D. Frisbie

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

After the frontier had reached the Midwest, settlement proceeded at a rapid pace. When the Black Hawk Purchase opened Iowa to settlers in 1832, farmers and merchants soon replaced the trappers, miners, and fur traders of an earlier era. By the outbreak of the Civil War the state was one-third settled. By 1890 all of the counties in the state had been settled and developed. Such rapid occupation of these lands encouraged dreams of great cities and the creation of country villages in numbers which were excessive for the survival of many. Numerous communities developed only to become ghost towns …

The Elections Of 1900 In Utah, R. Gary Penrod Jan 1968

The Elections Of 1900 In Utah, R. Gary Penrod

Theses and Dissertations

The 1900 elections have been little touched in historical studies of Utah. However 1900 was a year of special interest and deserves an examination. In that year a Special Election was held, all state offices were up for renewal and a Presidential Election took place.

The special election was necessary because B. H. Roberts had been denied his seat in the United States Congress. Roberts was excluded because he was a polygamist. The Roberts case threatened to revive gentile versus Mormon antipathies in Utah. However, the most puzzling aspect of the 1900 elections is connected with the presidential vote. In …

A Study Of Proposition 14 Of The 1964 California General Election, Arthur Wayne Hartgraves

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In the history of California, there have been few ballot measures of a more controversial nature presented to the electorate than the initiative constitutional amendment known as Proposition 14 which appeared on the 1964 General Election ballot.

Proposition 14 was a propsed amendment to the Constitution of the State of California which would prohibit the state, its agencies, and local government from placing limitations on a person's right to refuse to sell or rent his residential property to another person.1

The controversy stirred up by Proposition 14 caused it to gain national attention. Its opponents made claim that Proposition …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

in this issue. . .

WITH this number, THE MIDWEST QUARTERLY rounds out Volume I and in effect reaches a kind of maturity. Like the April issue, this fourth number moves our horizons further out by broadening the scope of material published. Once more the editors are able to offer a fairly wide variety of intellectual fare for our discerning readers. While the April issue saw us embark for the first time on the wine-dark sea of verse, this issue carries us further with contributions from two poets who write in the modem mood. And, manuscripts already in hand indicate, …

Published as a series sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution Bureau of American Ethnology, the “River Basin Surveys Papers” are a collection of archeological investigations focused on areas now flooded by the completion of various dam projects in the United States. The River Basin Surveys Papers (numbered 1-39) were mostly published in bundles with 5-6 papers in each bundle. In collaboration with the United States (US) National Park Service and the US Bureau of Reclamation, the US Department of the Interior, and the US Army Corps of Engineers, the Smithsonian Institution pulled archeological and paleontological remains from several sites prior to …

The Fruits Of Iowa Progressivism, 1900-1915, William Lavalle Bowers Jan 1958

The Fruits Of Iowa Progressivism, 1900-1915, William Lavalle Bowers

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Progressivism in the United States was more than any mere reform movement or revolution directed against an existent system; it was more nearly a national state of mind-- ''a broader impulse "1--which was both critical and reformist. Technically, there was no such thing as a Progressive movement, for there was no organized campaign uniting all the manifold efforts at political, social and economic reform. 2 However, the broader concept given above had many significant and fruitful manifestations during the early part of the twentieth century, and these may justifiably be called "Progressivism" or "the Progressive movement." Progressivism was complex and …
