Shared Culture, Individual Strategy And Collective Action: Explaining Slobodan Milošević’S Charismatic Rise To Power, Takis S. Pappas
Shared Culture, Individual Strategy And Collective Action: Explaining Slobodan Milošević’S Charismatic Rise To Power, Takis S. Pappas
Takis S Pappas
Slobodan Milosevic was the central actor in the recent Yugoslav drama that began with the rise of nationalism and ended with the dissolution of Yugoslavia. How did he emerge as a charismatic leader, and why did the Serbian people follow him to national disaster. It is argued that Milosevic owed his charismatic authority to the sense of widespread social discontent he helped be forged by strategically manipulating key cultural symbols of the Serbian nation. The claim that charismatic leadership, far from being an effect of existing real crises, may also become a major cause of prospective ones suggests new ways …

Men, Masculinity, And Male Domination: Reframing Feminist Analyses Of Sex Work, C. Heike Schotten
Men, Masculinity, And Male Domination: Reframing Feminist Analyses Of Sex Work, C. Heike Schotten
C. Heike Schotten
Prostitution has been considered by feminists as, alternatively, a gendered relation, an issue of sexuality, and a kind of labor. In this paper, I argue for an integrated feminist analysis of sex work which focuses on the first and third of these (leaving the second in the background) and orients itself toward consideration of sex work as a symptom or function of various masculinities.
Hegemony And Autonomy, Howard H. Lentner
Hegemony And Autonomy, Howard H. Lentner
Howard H. Lentner
This article analyzes the concept of hegemony and examines its relationship to power and autonomy. Refuting the conventional belief that it is ideology that distinguishes hegemony, the article argues that it is autonomy that constitutes the distinguishing characteristic. Although hegemons tend to evolve into imperialists, hegemony involves leadership of an alliance, not domination by coercion. It is impossible to conceptualize hegemony without also including autonomy. In this conceptualization, the primary source of autonomy lies in a specific hegemonic system of domination that itself embodies the notion of autonomy for both the polity and its citizenry, a limiting construction that hinders …
Racist Extremism In Central And Eastern Europe, Cas Mudde
Racist Extremism In Central And Eastern Europe, Cas Mudde
Cas Mudde
Based in part on the results of a unique, comparative research project, the aim of this article is threefold: (1) to provide a comparative summary of racist extremism in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE); (2) to compare the situation of racist extremism in CEE to that inWestern Europe; and (3) to come to some further insights about racist extremism in the region. It concludes, in contrast to many of the alarming statements on the topic, that CEE is neither a hotbed of racist extremism nor a safe haven for racist extremists. In fact, if one compares the state of racist …
What’S Left Of The Radical Left? The European Radical Left Since 1989: Decline And Mutation, Cas Mudde, Luke March
What’S Left Of The Radical Left? The European Radical Left Since 1989: Decline And Mutation, Cas Mudde, Luke March
Cas Mudde
We make a three-fold contribution to research on the European radical left. First, we will offer a clear and comprehensive definition of the term ‘radical left’. Second, we will look at the main developments within the European radical left as a whole, and not just at one sub-set of political parties. Third, we will take a pan-European perspective, focusing on both Eastern and Western Europe. The radical left in Europe post-1989 is both in decline and in mutation. Decline is evident in both the marginalization and moderation of Communist organizations (notably parties), a direct result of the fall of the …

Desafios Da Constituição Europeia À Teoria Constitucional, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha
Desafios Da Constituição Europeia À Teoria Constitucional, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha
Paulo Ferreira da Cunha
The project of the “Treaty that establishes a Constitution for the Europe”, beyond its political consequences, puts some challenges to the classical constitutional theory. At first sight, it seems completely heterodox towards canon constitutional tendencies, and first of all in what concerns the constituent power classical theories. However, a more rigorous analysis of the history of the modern constitutionalism and its founding texts, mainly French, can lead us to detect very revealing bridges between the liberal modern constitutionalism of the XVIIIth century and the present constitution making of a codified European Constitution. The “treaty” formula that was adopted also represents …

Alvarez Machain was wrongly decided because the Supreme Court rejects natural law arguments out of hand. Natural law and positive law are not dichotomous. They are complementary. The Supreme Court will eventually be forced to review all cases rejecting arguments due to a rejection of natural law.
No Longer Little Known But Now A Door Ajar: An Overview Of The Evolving And Dangerous Role Of The Alien Tort Statute In Human Rights And International Law Jurisprudence, Donald J. Kochan
Donald J. Kochan
Human rights’ and other international law activists have long worked to add teeth to their tasks. One of the most interesting avenues for such enforcement has been the Alien Tort Statute (“ATS”). The ATS has become the primary vehicle for injecting international norms and human rights into United States courts – against nation-states, state actors, and even private individuals or corporations alleged to actually or in complicity or conspiracy been responsible for supposed violations of international law. This Symposium Article provides an overview of the ATS evolution (or revolution), discusses the most recent significant development in the evolution arising from …

Does She Exploit Or Doesn't She?, Karl Widerquist

Gijs Van Donselaar uses a Guathier-based definition of exploitation (A exploits B if A is better off and B worse off than either of them would have been had the other not existed) and a related concept the abuse of rights in a series of two-person examples to demonstrate that an unconditional basic income can be parasitic and to make the case that everyone has both a right and responsibility to work. This paper argues that the same conclusions cannot be made in a world of more than two people. Exploitation may be indefinable, and information problems may make both …
