Aquatic Plant Communities Of East-Central Illinois, Randolph Lee Vogel

Aquatic plant communities of east-central Illinois were studied during the late summers of 1971 and 1976. Frequencies, relative frequencies and frequency of dominance were calculated for the various taxa. At the pond level, changes in the flora over the 5-year span have taken place, usually consisting of the addition or subtraction of one species. Overall, however, it was found that the aquatic community has remained relatively static, as has the percentage of ponds lacking aquatic plants. Factors influencing distributions and sterility are discussed and it was concluded that all the factors play varying roles, but no one factor or combination …

Germination Study Of Dormant Cercis Canadensis L. Seed, Glenn Hosokawa

Cercis canadensis L. (redbud) seeds have been shown to require both scarification and stratification before germination occurs. Seeds which were leached prior to the scarification-stratification treatments were found to germinate more quickly, and CaSO₄ solution was found to enhance germination. However, the percent germination remained approximately the same and leaching failed to substitute for the stratification requirement. Extraction studies indicated that germination inhibitors were present in scarified-non stratified seeds, however, the presence of germination promoters in scarified-stratified seeds could not be demonstrated. There is at present no recent comprehensive manual of the Great Plains flora. Consequently, students of the flora must utilize monographs, revisions, and other sources in their work. This bibliography was compiled in order to facilitate location of available literature, and will be useful to anyone interested in the systematics of the plants of the Great Plains. This compilation was produced for the Great Plains Flora Association as an initial step in the preparation of a major flora for the region.

Leaf Epidermal Transmittance Of Ultraviolet Radiation And Its Implication For Plant Sensitivity To Ultraviolet-Radiation Injury, Ronald Robberecht

Leaf epidermal transmittance of ultraviolet radiation (280-400 nm) was examined in several plant species to determine the capability of the epidermis to attenuate solar ultraviolet radiation. Epidermal samples were mechanically isolated and examined with a spectroradiometer/integrating sphere for transmittance. A survey of 25 species exposed to natural insolation was conducted. Although the species differed in life form, habitat type, and epidermal characteristics, epidermal transmittance was generally less than 10%. Ultraviolet radiation was attenuated 95 to 99% in more than half of the species. In 16 species, flavonoid and related pigments in the epidermis accounted for 20 to 57% of the …

This account initiates a series of articles concerning the mosses of the Great Plains. The boundary of this region (Fig. 1) is adopted in part from a parallel study currently in progress on vascular plants (McGregor et aI., 1977). However, in addition, this moss study includes that region of Canada studied by Bird (1962). The total area included in this study of the Great Plains thus occupies about 665 thousand square miles, extending from southern Manitoba to southeastern Alberta, south to northeastern New Mexico and northwestern Oklahoma.

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Breeder, foundation, and certified seed lots of Dawson alfalfa, Medicago sativa L., were tested to determine stability in performance during three generations of seed increase under certification. Two field experiments were conducted, a seeded forage yield test and a space-planted test. Greenhouse experiments included separate tests for resistance to pea aphids, spotted alfalfa aphids, and bacterial wilt. Results obtained on certified Dawson alfalfa seed classes in field and greenhouse experiments were in agreement with the original variety description.

Two housed, swine-growing-finishing units were studied for numbers of total bacteria, fecal coliforms, Staphylococcus, and Salmonella in the air. At 30.5 and 122 cm from the floor, total colony-forming particles, as tested, averaged 3.4 x 10) and 1.3 x 105/m³ of air, respectively; whereas fecal coliform counts averaged 24 x 103 and 1.9 x 103/m³ of air, respectively. Only 41% of the organisms growing on Staphylococcus 110 medium tested as Staphylococcus. Of 458 Staphylococcus isolates, 5 were coagulase-positive. No Salmonella were detected in the air of the units tested.

The cryptogamic flora of several soil crusts of arid regions in southern Utah was determined. Twenty-two lichens, Six mosses and fifty-four algal species were identified and their relative abundance estimated.

Concentrations of cAMP increased with time in pea hypocotyls assayed at 24 hour intervals over a period of four days. The highest concentration was 20.1 pmoles/mg protein which occurred in 96 hour hypocotyl tips. Ninety-six hour root bodies (dissected region between tip and embryo) achieved a concentration of 8.6 pmoles/mg. Concentrations of cAMP in embryos remained constant around one pmole/mg for three days and values doubled on the fourth day.

Saffron thistle is a primary noxious weed and is widespread throughout the drier parts of Western Australia. When growing in pasture its prickly growth habit discourages animals from grazing amongst it so that its presence results in the loss of feed. In crops it reduces yield and results in dockage when seed is found in harvested grain.

This study was based on more than 36,000 Venezuelan Streblidae representing ca. 115 species and species complexes in 22 genera, taken from more than 6,800 hats of 95 species. Two new genera are proposed and 45 new species are described. The morphology is briefly discussed and terminology is revised. Collection data are given for each species, together with discussions on variability and host relationships when pertinent. Rock Creek Gorge in Rock Creek Natural Landmark in Laurel County, Kentucky is a deep narrow gorge dominated by Tsuga canadensis (L.) Carr., Oxydendrum arboreum (L.) DC., Betula lenta L. and Liriodendron tulipifera L. Rhododendron maximum L., dominating the understory, is also an important constituent of the gorge. An analysis of the forest composition showed the community to be stable and climax. The dominant species were found in sapling and seedling size classes. The vegetation varied slightly between the east facing and west facing slopes. Hemlock did not attain as high an importance value on the west facing slope, although …

This research used the data on witness trees found in the surveyors' records of the General Land Office surveys of 1805-1815 as the basis for studying the primeval forests of unglaciated southern Illinois. Via computer, the random pairs and closest individual methods of plotless sampling were used to develop stand attributes tables, with soil association boundaries defining the limits of forest stands. A vegetation map was developed from these stands. Four major forest types were delineated: Upland Oak, nixed Hardwoods, Swamp Forest, and Floodplain Forest.
