Mammals and their ectoparasites were collected in all parts of Venezuela between 1965 and 1968 by the Smithsonian Venezuelan Project. Ecological and geographical data are summarized here for 38,213 specimens of 270 species of mammals obtained by the project.

Ecotypic Differentiation In Ohio & Mississippi Populations Of Acer Negundo L., Anthony Greco

Laboratory investigations of Acer negundo populations from two widely separated habitats revealed distinct patterns of ecotypic differentiation in budbursting, leaf fall, and chlorophyll levels. Second year seedlings of Mississippi seed origin had complete leaf emergence before any evidence of budbursting in the Ohio progeny of similar age. Leaf fall patterns showed a clear difference between the two populations with Ohio plants dropping their leaves 2.5 weeks prior to complete defoliation in the Mississippi progeny. Significant differences in chlorophyll levels were demonstrated with the more northern (higher latitude) Ohio population showing consistently greater amounts of chlorophyll per gram dry weight than …

Spacing patterns of shrubs were studied at a series of sites in the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts. There were significant numbers of occurrences of both aggregation and regularity in dispersion of individuals. These may be due to vegetative reproduction or environmental heterogeneity, and competition between plants, respectively. Different size classes of shrubs tended to follow the trend of aggregated → random → regular with increasing size. This suggests the increasing importance of competition as the plants grow. Further evidence of competition between plants was provided by the correlations of plant size with the distance to their neighbors. Root systems were …

Large areas within alpine and subalpine tundra have been by disturbed by mining during this century. The most promising method for retarding deterioration of these areas is revegetation with native species through both seeding and transplants. One natural process of revegetation which occurs on portions of many existing disturbances seems to be the establishment of a few species that expand with time to form matts of plants.

Two factors which affect leaf ontogeny and ultimate leaf size: (1) the rate and duration of cell expansion, and (2) the rate and duration of cell division, were examined for their role in the slowed early growth rate and smaller ultimate leaf size when plants are exposed to ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation. Rumex patientia L. was grown in controlled environment chambers under enhanced UV-B radiation (equivalent to daily solar UV-B irradiation at 40°N latitude in mid-May with an atmospheric ozone concentration of 0.20 atm-cm) and control treatments. Soil and plant analysis can be used to identify problems in soils, diagnose nutrient deficiencies and as a guide to fertiliser usage.

Soil testing is particularily useful where large amounts of phosphorus and potassium are leached or removed from the paddock in hay or silage.

Actual rates of fertiliser can only be recommended from soil testing and only in conjunction with additional biological and economic information.

Unialgal Growth Of Anabaena And Dictyosphaerium In Lake Itasca, Charles P. Mason

A relatively new field technique was employed to determine the growth of algae in natural waters. Anabaena sp. (Cyanophyta) and Dictyosphaerium sp. (Chlorophyta) were grown in separate membrane filter chambers situated in Lake Itasca and LaSalle Lagoon, a sewage effluent pond. Physical and chemical determinations before and after each two-week experiment were correlated with changes in algal biomass. Wet weight determinations of Anabaena were twice as great in the lake as in the sewage lagoon, while Dictyosphaerium growth was the same in both habitats. The leaves of three cultivars of Cyclamen persicum were examined at several stages of development in order to determine the pattern of elongation in both the lamina and petiole. Although there is a considerable literature on lamina elongation, relatively little is known about the growth of the petiole. In the latter structure it is usually assumed that an intercalary meristem is involved. Elongation of the young leaf is initially due to activity distributed throughout the deve1opint organ. Maturation of the leaf progresses acropetally from the base of the petiole and basipetally from the tip of the lamina. As the leaf …

The productivity of natural stands of cattails (Typha latifolia) has been correlated with the amounts of nutrients in the soil and water by Boyd and Hess (Ecology, 51: 296, 1970). The direct effects of varying levels of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) on productivity were examined in our study by growing cattails in Hoagland's nutrient solution. Concentrations of ¼, 1/16, and 1/64 the amount of N present in complete Hoagland's solution (0.01Ml resulted in 63 percent, 48 percent and 26 percent of the dry weight of plants grown in complete solution. Following a Cabinet endorsed recommendation by the Environmental Protection Authority in 1976 an area of vacant Crown land (the Wandana Area) north-east of Yuna, Western Australia, was examined during March and September, 1977.

The geology, soils and vegetation of the area are described and annotated lists of mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians are presented. The area lies near or on the boundary of the South- Western and Eremaean Botanical Provinces and vegetation formations typical of both occur. The vertebrate fauna is a mixture of South-Western and Eyrean species and is especially rich in reptiles, 41 species being recorded. Comparisons between …

Vascular Vegetation And Flora Of Remnant Forest In The Ohio River Floodplain Between The Great Kanawha And Big Sandy Rivers, West Virginia, John Carl Furry

A total of 246 species of vascular plants representing 75 families were recorded from six physiographically defined forest types in the Ohio River floodplain between the Greet Kanawha end Big Sandy Rivers, West Virginia. Distinct woodlands were those associated with the River flats, River front, bottoms of secondary streams, stream banks, the high floodplain end swamps. Only two species, Acer saccharinum and Platenus occidentalis representing 0.81 percent of the total species encountered, were present in all forest types; 105 species (42.7 percent) were restricted to one forest type. The soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) is a very important world crop. The seed is rich in both protein and oil, making it a valuable human food resource. Many scientists believe that there are physiological barriers preventing increased soybean yields. Any agronomic discovery that would consistently increase soybean yields would be important to world food production. One possible yield barrier in soybeans concerns the mineral nutrition of the plant during the seed-filling stages of growth.
