The Effects Of Periodic Inundation On Corticolous Lichens Along Big Seven Mile Creek, Cabell County, West Virginia, Stephen Leslie Beckelhimer

The distribution of corticolous lichens was studied along Big Seven Mile Creek, a tributary of the Ohio River using step-wise discriminant analysis. The populations appear to respond to complex interacting gradients of humidity, periodic inundation and the abrasive action of water transported debris. Hacroepiphytic coverage and species richness increased with height of the tree bole. Of all species observed, Arthonia caesia (Flot.)Korb and Physcia acinulata Mul. Arg. possess­ed the highest tolerance to periodic inundation. In addition, these species were found to have the highest resistance to scouring by water-borne debris. Candelaria concolor (Dicks.) B. Influence Of Vesicular-Arbuscular Mycorrhizae On Water Movement Through Bouteloua Gracilis (H.B.K.) Lag Ex Steud, Michael F. Allen

Root growth characteristics and water transport were compared between non-mycorrhizal Bouteloua gracilis and vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal Bouteloua gracilis infected with Glomus fasciculatus. Mycorrhizal plants did not have significantly different leaf area or root length from non-mycorrhizal plants, hut did have significantly fewer and shorter root hairs. Mycorrhizal plants had 50% lower leaf resistance with no change in leaf or root water potentials; thus transpiration was increased 100% with a 50% reduction in whole-plant, soil-to-root and root-to-leaf resistance. Tillage practices can influence crop root development. Root distributions were determined for wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) grown in a wheat-fallow rotation during the 1977-1978 winter wheat crop year on an Alliance silt loam (Aridic Argiustoll). The fallow tillage treatments were plow, subtillage, and chemical (no tillage). Each tillage treatment was split into subplots for N application of 0 or 45 kg/ha.

Rooting density was determined by washing the roots in soil cores 7.6 cm in diam by 15 cm long extracted to depths of 90, 105, and 120 cm on 28 Mar., 2 May, and 8 June 1978, respectively. …

Castration has long been a traditional practice in the United States. Research studies indicate that intact males grow more rapidly, utilize feed more efficiently and produce a higher-yielding carcass with less fat and more edible product. The disadvantages of the intact male include aggressive behavior (bull and boar); undesirable odors and flavors (boar and ram); lower quality grade (bull); lower meat tenderness (bull and ram) and undesirable meat color (bull and ram). The effects of contrasting photoperiods (16L:8D vs 8L: 16D) and ambient temperatures (5 C vs 18 C vs 31 C) on performance traits of ewe lambs have been evaluated. Seventy-two lambs were paired and allotted to one of six treatment groups in a 2 • 3 factorial experiment. The lambs were fed a pelleted diet ad libitum. throughout the 14-wk study (i.e., as Iambs progressed from 12 to 26 wk of age). A plot of land on the University of Central Arkansas campus has been permanently designated as a Nature Reserve which is to remain much as it is with woods and open, grassy fields for class use and other educational purposes. The 1.5 hectare open field is a particularly good site for prairie restoration, since the area has not been under cultivation in recent time. Andropogon gerardi, A. scoparius, Sorghastrum avenaceum, Panicum virgatum, Liatris pycnostachya, Eryngium yuccifolium, Rudbeckia hirta, and Helianthus sp. are examples of plants naturally occurring here with some frequency. The plant pathogenic corynebacteria are a fascinating group of bacteria that produce effects as diverse as any in the microbial world, ranging from wilts to abnormal growths. Several new pathogens have been discovered since this group was reviewed by Jensen (75), Starr (157), and Lelliott (96). Most subsequent reviews have dealt with taxonomy. The areas covered in this review necessarily reflect my biases and limitations. However, this review attempts to be comprehensive in some areas, and it calls attention to other areas that would benefit from more detailed investigation.

This mini-review aims to summarize some of our recent findings relating to testicular function and feedback control of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis by testicular steroids in rams and bulls. Testosterone secretion in intact males is not tonic, but is characterized by episodic pulses. This pattern of secretion is dictated by inputs of the central nervous system via secretions of the hypothalamus (luteinizing hormone- releasing hormone; LHRH) and anterior pituitary (luteinizing hormone; LH). A temporal relationship exists between concentrations of LH and testosterone in serum and evidence is presented that strongly suggests that their episodic secretion is dependent on discrete episodes of …

A comparative study was undertaken of the changes in woody vegetation of Burgner Acres during the past 18 years. This ten acre woodlot, located in east-central Illinois was surveyed using a method identical to that of a previous study. A literature review describing the composition of three general types of forests in the Grand Prairie Division of Illinois is included.

Decay Rates And Nutrient Dynamics In Confines And Nonconfined Leaf Litter In The Great Dismal Swamp, R. Frederick K. Yates

This study was designed to quantitatively compare decay rates and nutrient dynamics by the confined and unconfined litter techniques in a seasonally flooded swamp. In this study both methods indicated the same order of decay rates among sites (cedar>maple-gum>cypress> mixed hardwood), but the unconfined method showed faster decay rates at all sites. As in two years of previous data collection, the stands exhibiting some seasonal flooding showed greater decay rates than the mixed hardwood stand which was not inundated. Nutrient dynamics were not different between litter bag and leaf pack methods.
