Phenotypic Plasticity Of Native And Invasive Cool-Season Grasses In Response To Frequency Of Moisture Availability, Ming-Yu Stephens
Phenotypic Plasticity Of Native And Invasive Cool-Season Grasses In Response To Frequency Of Moisture Availability, Ming-Yu Stephens
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Phenotypic plasticity, the ability of an individual to alter its growth in response to environmental conditions, is an attribute that is considered a likely invader attribute, as it provides the opportunity to expand its ecological niche breadth. Adaptive phenotypic plasticity can affect not only the ability to establish in a new environment, but also the ability to outperform the existing vegetation over time. Bromus inermis (smooth brome) and Poa pratensis (Kentucky bluegrass) are invasive species in tall- and mixed-grass prairie ecosystems. The objectives of this two-part study were to quantify the adaptive plasticity of biomass accumulation and tiller production in …
Identification Of Physiological And Morphological Traits Governing High Water Use Efficiency In Alfalfa, Krishna Ghimire
Identification Of Physiological And Morphological Traits Governing High Water Use Efficiency In Alfalfa, Krishna Ghimire
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Alfalfa is an important forage crop worldwide. Being deep-rooted, N2-fixing and high yielding, alfalfa has great economic, ecological and nutritional benefits. While alfalfa is a high yielding crop, its high productivity depends on irrigation water in many areas and consumes the greatest amount of water among all the major crops. With a growing demand for water resources due to an increase in human population and industrial water use, plus frequent drought due to climate change, irrigation water has become increasingly scarce and expensive. To sustain high production of alfalfa with limited water resource, alfalfa cultivars with improved water use efficiency …
Elucidation Of Abscisic Acid In Stress Resistance Of Mnium Cuspidatum Through Salt Exposure And Chlorophyll Content Analysis, Kurt Corsbie
Elucidation Of Abscisic Acid In Stress Resistance Of Mnium Cuspidatum Through Salt Exposure And Chlorophyll Content Analysis, Kurt Corsbie
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Upon exposure to stresses, a battery of reactions occurs within the model moss Physcomitrella patens that induces the expression of defense-related genes. One of these reactions results in the production of abscisic acid (ABA), a plant hormone that helps a plant resist desiccation by inducing the activation of defense genes which results in protective physiological reactions. In this study, experiments were conducted on the moss species Mnium cuspidatum to see if it responds similarly to P. patens. This comparison was investigated as sample groups of M. cuspidatum and P. patens were pre-treated with 0µM, 50µM, or 500µM ABA to …

Maintaining Ecosystem Resilience: Functional Responses Of Tree Cavity Nesters To Logging In Temperate Forests Of The Americas, Jose Tomas Ibarra, Michaela Martin, Kristina L. Cockle, Kathy Martin
Aspen Bibliography
Logging often reduces taxonomic diversity in forest communities, but little is known about how this biodiversity loss affects the resilience of ecosystem functions. We examined how partial logging and clearcutting of temperate forests influenced functional diversity of birds that nest in tree cavities. We used point-counts in a before-after-control-impact design to examine the effects of logging on the value, range, and density of functional traits in bird communities in Canada (21 species) and Chile (16 species). Clearcutting, but not partial logging, reduced diversity in both systems. The effect was much more pronounced in Chile, where logging operations removed critical nesting …

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Aflatoxins are among themost powerful carcinogens in nature. The major aflatoxin-producing fungi are Aspergillus flavus and A. parasiticus. Numerous crops, including peanut, are susceptible to aflatoxin contamination by these fungi. There has been an increased use of RNA interference (RNAi) technology to control phytopathogenic fungi in recent years. In order to develop molecular tools targeting specific genes of these fungi for the control of aflatoxins, it is necessary to obtain their genome sequences. Although high-throughput sequencing is readily available, it is still impractical to sequence the genome of every isolate. Thus, in this work, the authors proposed a workflow …
Reproductive Biology Of The Critically Endangered Endemic Planterodium Somanum In Turkey, Di̇lek Oskay
Reproductive Biology Of The Critically Endangered Endemic Planterodium Somanum In Turkey, Di̇lek Oskay
Turkish Journal of Botany
The reproductive characteristics of Erodium somanum (Geraniaceae), a critically endangered endemic species, were investigated in order to evaluate the main factors that affect its reproductive success and to evaluate their importance on its conservation. The estimated pollen/ovule ratio was calculated as 1187. Pollen viability and stigma receptivity experiments showed that stigma receptivity and pollen viability were high and synchronous throughout the anthesis. E. somanum is a strictly dioecious species and pollinated by insects. Flower visitors in the studied populations were mostly beetles and ants. The average percentage of fruit formation for each plant was determined as 46%. Capacity of seed …

Proteomic Analysis Of Flowers At Two Developmental Stages In Thermopsis Turcica (Fabaceae), Mustafa Yildiz, Emre Pehli̇van, Hakan Terzi̇
Turkish Journal of Botany
Flower development is a complex physiological phenomenon that is affected by environmental stimuli and endogenous signals. Several molecular approaches have provided a comprehensive view of the physiological processes associated with flower development, but little is known about proteomic changes. Therefore, we investigated the proteomic alterations during flower development in endemic Thermopsis turcica (Vuralia turcica), an unusual legume species with 3-4 free carpels in a single flower. A comparative proteomic analysis to identify proteins involved in flower development was carried out in T. turcica. Alterations in proteomes of the flower buds and fully opened flowers were studied by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. …

Characterization Of Rice Polyphenol Oxidase Promoter In Transgenic Arabidopsis Thaliana, Wasim Akhtar, Ejaz Aziz, Hisashi Koiwa, Tariq Mahmood
Turkish Journal of Botany
Polyphenol oxidase (PPO) enzymes are ubiquitous in plant kingdom and catalyze the oxidation of phenols to highly reactive quinones. The PPO gene plays an important role in plant defense mechanisms against biotic and abiotic stresses but the regulation of PPO promoter in stresses remains unclear. Here Oryza sativa (OsPPO) promoter was fused to firefly Luciferase (LUC) and β-glucuronidase (GUS) reporter genes separately to test the effects of wounding, abscisic acid (ABA), and methyl jasmonate (MeJ) applications on PPO promoter induction. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report about rice PPO promoter induction in response to wounding …

Turkish Journal of Botany
Amorphophallus titanum (Becc.) Becc. ex Arcang., the titan arum, is popularly known for having the world's largest unbranched inflorescence. The enormous flower-like inflorescence is also called 'corpse flower' or 'carrion flower' due to the characteristic putrid odor of the bloom. The present study illustrates detailed anatomy and micromorphology of the inflorescence by light and scanning electron microscopy. Collenchyma was found to be the major tissue providing mechanical support in the spathe. The appendix consisted of a dense parenchymatous cortex enclosing a hollow center traversed by loose networks of aerenchyma. Anthocyanin pigments found in the epidermises and cortical tissues imparted a …

Floristic Differentiation Between Mid-Seral Communities Of Abandonedcharcoal Kilns In The Forests Of The Gargano Promontory (South Italy), Franco Pedrotti, Dan Gafta
Turkish Journal of Botany
We searched for patterns in species composition and richness of mid-seral communities developed on abandoned charcoal hearths that might be induced by differences in succession progress and forest context. One phytosociological relevé was performed on each of the 22 charcoal platforms located in beech (Anemono apenninae-Fagetum) and oak-hornbeam forests (Doronico-Carpinetum). The ratio of forest understorey to non-forest species richness (F/nF) at plot level was used as a proxy for the succession progress. There was a sharp differentiation of plant communities due to their floristic resemblance with the understory vegetation of the forest type in which they were integrated. Nevertheless, these …
