Extractable Nutrients And Ph Values From Nine Soil Associations Of Arkansas, A. W. Tennille Jan 1973

Extractable Nutrients And Ph Values From Nine Soil Associations Of Arkansas, A. W. Tennille

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Soil samples from the 0-10-cm and 10-20-cm depths were obtained from nine of the 11 soli associations of Arkansas. Sites sampled had a heavy forest cover and showed no evidence of cultivation. Routine soil tests showed that pH values ranged from a low of 4.38 for the Loessial Hills to 5.83 in the Ozark Highlands. Potassium ranged from 69 to 206 kg/ha. Phosphorus was very low in nearly all sites; the extremes were 9 and 83 kg/ha, but most values were less than 30 kg/ha. Calcium ranged from 122 to 1,523 kg/ha. The data indicate that when woodland areas are …

Farm Operations Management, H E. Fels, A. W. Hogstrom Jan 1973

Farm Operations Management, H E. Fels, A. W. Hogstrom

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The main defence of Australian farmers against the cost-price squeeze has been to increase productivity. The tendency is to run more and more stock per man and to grow more crop per man.

Some farmers run unusually large numbers of animal units per man-year.

The operations of 16 such farmers over one year were examined to find out whether it had been profitable for them to reduce labour inputs to such an extent.

Summary Of 1972 Seasonal Results "Decide" Superphosphate Rates On Pastures, J. W. Bowden Jan 1973

Summary Of 1972 Seasonal Results "Decide" Superphosphate Rates On Pastures, J. W. Bowden

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

A total of 53 pasture trials were topdressed. Of these, 37 trials were quantitatively assessed at different times during the growing season. Of the 15 wheat trials sown, only four trials gave useful results because of multiple drilling techniques used on most trials. Until the trial results have undergone comprehensive statistical analysis, no conclusions can be drawn. about the levels of response or "optimum" rates of superphosphate application at individual sites. However, because of the very short growing season in 1972 responses were generally poor. It appears that nil superphosphate application would have been optimum for animal production in the …

Tissue Culture Of Camptotheca Acuminata Decaisne (Nyssaceae), Ron Charles Cooke Jan 1973

Tissue Culture Of Camptotheca Acuminata Decaisne (Nyssaceae), Ron Charles Cooke

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Camptotheca acuminata Decaisne (Nyssaceae) is endemic to China. The plant was brought to the United States only on a few occasions and thus can be considered rare in this country. A search of the plant kingdom for species that produced anticancer substances revealed that ethanolic extracts of Camptotheca acuminata had such a property. The active constituent was identified eventually. Further testing and possible marketing of the active principle, and alkaloid, (camptothecin) depended on a combination of factors: obtaining the plant from China, organization of a mass planting program in the United States or chemical synthesis of the drug.

Due to …

The Effect Of Insect Damage On Indian Ricegrass (Oryzopsis Hymenoides) In Western Utah, Luis S. Guerra Dec 1972

The Effect Of Insect Damage On Indian Ricegrass (Oryzopsis Hymenoides) In Western Utah, Luis S. Guerra

Theses and Dissertations

Indian ricegrass at the Desert Range Experiment Station forty-seven miles west of Milford, Utah, is damaged by the larvae of Coenchroa illibella, Diatrae sp. and Typoceris ceraticornis, the latter being the most destructive. The biology of the insects and the extent of damage inflicted are discussed. Uninfested plants produced more new stems than infested plants. Plants having a basal diameter of 4 to 6.9 cm and 7 to 9.9 cm were the most frequently infested and, consequently, the most severely damaged.

Mutual Exclusion Between Salmonberry And Douglas-Fir In The Coast Range Of Oregon, Kenneth Ray Still Jun 1972

Mutual Exclusion Between Salmonberry And Douglas-Fir In The Coast Range Of Oregon, Kenneth Ray Still

Dissertations and Theses

One serious problem faced by the forest industry in the Pacific Northwest is poor regeneration of commercial trees on land which is harvested and subsequently dominated by brush species. In Coastal Oregon, salmonberry is one of these brush species. Detailed investigations of field sites indicate that light intensity in the brush stands was low but sufficient for germination and early growth of Douglas-fir seedlings and soil moisture percentages and nutrient levels were high enough to support early Douglas-fir growth. Laboratory tests demonstrated the presence of leachable phytotoxins in the leaves of salmonberry. The hypothesis resulting from this study is that …

An inclined point frame was used to measure leaf area indices in an alpine tundra Kobresia stand and Deschampsia meadow on Niwot Ridge, Colorado. Measurements were made throughout the summer of 1971 at various heights in the canopy and for each species in the two communities. Maximum leaf area indices of 2.2 and 2.0 occurred in the Kobresia and Deschampsia sites, respectively. The Kobresia site was characterized by a single dominant species, Kobresia myosuroides, and a predominance of vegetation within 2.5 cm of mean ground level. The Deschampsia site had no single dominant species. The region of maximum foliage …

Limitation Studies Of Seed Set In The Onion Allium Cepa L. (Liliaceae), Nizar Shukri Shasha'a

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Two field experiments were carried out. In the first experiment, 13 variables were studied for 3 inbred groups as influenced by genetic differences, source of pollen, soil moisture, fertilizers, and size of bulbs. Path-coefficient analysis was made of various insect pollinators influencing seed yield in different inbreds, and of components of seed production in all inbreds together. In the second experiment, 4 variables were studied for one male-sterile inbred and one male-fertile inbred as influenced by soil moisture and fertilizers.

Genetic differences among inbreds were the most important source of variation in seed yields. This points out that a major …

An Isolation And Partial Purification Of A Small Tobacco Mosaic Virus Nucleoprotein Unit And A Study Of Its Polymerization By Carbodiimides, Alicia Bruna De Tosso May 1972

An Isolation And Partial Purification Of A Small Tobacco Mosaic Virus Nucleoprotein Unit And A Study Of Its Polymerization By Carbodiimides, Alicia Bruna De Tosso

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A small tobacco mosaic virus nucleoprotein unit, thought to be the basic infectious unit of TMV, was isolated and purified from systemically-infected Turkish tobacco leaves. This small TMV particle was characterized by a doughnut shaped form as shown in the electron micrographs and by the induction of gray lesions when inoculated on Scotia bean leaves. Four carbodiimides, organic chemical condensing reagents, were compared for effectiveness in inducing polymerization of this starting material into longer rod-shaped viral particles. Dicyclohexyl carbodiimide, a wax-like solid, was found to be the most suitable reagent when used with an organic solvent such as ethanol in …

Inorganic Mercury Uptake And Mercury Tolerance Demonstrated By Several Species Of Algae, Daniel S. Filip May 1972

Inorganic Mercury Uptake And Mercury Tolerance Demonstrated By Several Species Of Algae, Daniel S. Filip

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The inhibition by low concentrations of inorganic mercury has been established for several species of freshwater algae, and a method has been developed to determine mercury levels in algal cells, having good precision at levels as low as one hundred parts per billion.

Rapid sorption of inorganic mercury by glassware was minimized by using heavy algal cultures and short term incubations. The rates and extent of mercury uptake by three species of freshwater green algae were delineated under laboratory conditions. Replicate mercury containing cultures yielded slightly different mercury concentrations upon analysis due to analytical errors and glass sorption. Therefore, percent …

Adaptations Of Orchid Flowers To Their Pollinators, Judith Rae Jablon Johnson May 1972

Adaptations Of Orchid Flowers To Their Pollinators, Judith Rae Jablon Johnson

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Study of the angiosperm flower, linking form with function, has lead to the investigation of the interrelationships between flower and pollinating agent. The dependence of certain plants upon specific insects to make possible the production of fruit has been known since Biblical times, in the case of the date and the fig (Condit, 1947). Observations of this nature, however, long preceded understanding of what pollination represented and the concept of sexuality in plants.

Plant Adaptation To Cold I. Chlorophyll Ii. Minerals, Peter Rosen May 1972

Plant Adaptation To Cold I. Chlorophyll Ii. Minerals, Peter Rosen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A number of montane herbs in northern Utah typically form flower buds beneath the snow cover and flower either through it or immediately after its recession. Two of these species, one naturally occurring, Claytonia lanceolata, and one cultivated bulb, Galanthus nivalis, were investigated for their response to this stress environment.

Snow depth patterns, chlorophyll content of tissues, and plants grown in light-tight boxes, suggest that light passing through the snow to reach plants growing underneath is not critically involved in the timing of their developmental cycles or in their ability to endure this low temperature environment.

Ability to endure stress …

The following herbicides were evaluated for their effect on perennial grasses and water pollution in El Salvador, Central America: MSMA (monosodium methanearsonate), DSMA (disodium methanearsonate), cacodylic acid (hydroxydimethylarsine oxide), paraquat (1 ,1 'dimethyl- 4,4'-bipyridinium ion), dalapon (2,2-dichloropropionic acid), amitrole (3-amino-s-triazole), atrazine (2-chloro-4-(ethylamino)-6-(isopropylamino)- s-triazine), diuron (3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea), and karbutilate (m-(3,3-dimethylureido)phenyl-t-butylcarbamate), The herbicides were sprayed on drainage channels at different dosage levels, Some plots received one application, others received two, and still others received three applications.

All herbicides except atrazine effectively controlled perennial grasses, Cacodylic acid was the most effective contact chemical, with dosage levels of 7 and 10 kg/ha achieving 77 percent …

The Surface Movement Of A New S-Triazine Herbicide From Treated Cropland And Its Environmental Effects, Zeldon A. Nelson May 1972

The Surface Movement Of A New S-Triazine Herbicide From Treated Cropland And Its Environmental Effects, Zeldon A. Nelson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Six days following the application of 1.5 and 3.0 lb/A of 2- methoxy-4-sec.-butylamino-6-ethylamino-s-triazine (GS-14254) to established plots of alfalfa, water samples were collected at several distances from the plots and analyzed for herbicide residues with a Beckman DB-G grating spectrophotometer. The data indicate that GS-14254 is transported in small amounts but that the concentrations in the runoff water decline rapidly with increased distance from the treated areas and time.

S-14254 produced no visual injury symptoms of leaf chlorosis or plant stunting on alfalfa at the two rates used. However, some initial injury has been reported by other workers. …

The Action Of Antibiotics And Antimetabolites On The Tobacco Mosaic Virus Infection Process In Bean Leaves, Virendra Nayyar

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The action of 28 antibiotics and antimetabolites at varying concentrations was studied in coincidence with the bioassay of tobacco mosaic virus on detached bean leaves by using an ultrasonic method of inoculation developed by Lamborn, Cochran and Chidester.1 All tested chemicals were classified, in regard to the virus infection process, as inhibitory or stimulatory and their optimal concentrations in the inoculum were determined. Of the 28 antibiotics and antimetabolites studied, eight were found to stimulate while twenty inhibited TMV infection in bean leaves. From the results of these experiments, an attempt was made to characterize the nature of the …

Understory Characteristics Related To Site Quality For Aspen In Utah, James H. Warner, Kimball T. Harper

Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series

An analysis has been made of the basic ecology of aspen forests of the mountainous areas of Utah and northern Arizona. Forty-nine study areas have been examined in respect to density, height and age of the tree cover, tree reproduction, and composition and biomass production of the understory. A graphic model of interspecific assocations among prevalent understory species has been prepared by a cluster-analysis procedure based on presence and absence of species in 1,225 small quadrats (0.25 m2) uniformly distributed among the 49 stands. The model separates species of relatively stable as opposed to rapidly seral aspen forests. …
