United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Continuous cultures of pluripotent prenchymal hepatocytes were derived from the epiblasts of 8-day-old pig blastocytes. The cells were polygonal and had phase-contrast dark, granular cytoplasm with prominent nuclei and nucleoli. These feeder-dependent cell cultures differentiated into large, multicellular, secretory, duct-like structures or formed small canaliculi between individual cells. Alternatively, the cells accumulated droplets that stained intensely with Oil Red O, a lipid-specific stain. Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), albumin, and β-fibrinogen mRNAs were expressed as the cells differentiated in culture. Serum-free medium that was conditioned by the cells contained transferrin, AFP, and albumin. The growth and viability of the cells were inhibited by …
Anatomical And Sem Studies Of The Pericarp And Aleurone Layer Of Two Supersweet Corn Cultivars, Tufail Ahmed
Anatomical And Sem Studies Of The Pericarp And Aleurone Layer Of Two Supersweet Corn Cultivars, Tufail Ahmed
Masters Theses
Supersweet corn (Zea mays L. var. rugosa.) which contain endosperm mutant shrunken -2 exhibits low seed vigor and poor field emergence especially when soil temperature is 10-15 °C. Based on their emergence in the field at low temperature, they can be divided into two groups as tolerant and sensitive cultivars. Two cultivars 'Illini Gold' (Tolerant) and 'Honey 'n' Pearl' (Sensitive) were studied to see any anatomical differences, holes and cracks in the pericarp and air pockets between pericarp and aleurone layer. Significant differences were found in the thickness of pericarp. 'Illini Gold' cultivar has thicker pericarp and thin walled aleurone …

INTSORMIL Impacts and Bulletins
Sustainable production of food and forage with a focus on plant adaptation to stress environments will be a continued priority for developing countries in the future. Since many areas of the world which support substantial human populations are drought prone, such as the subsaharan African zone and others, the primary focus has been on drought. However, one of the greatest restraints to sustainability of agriculture worldwide is the lack of sufficient soil nutrients for crop growth, or other soil constraints such as acidity or salinity which hinder crop production substantially.
Optimizing soil fertility or amending acid and saline soils to …

Effect Of Salinity (Nacl) On Germination, Growth, Ion Accumulation, And Protein Synthesis In Alfalfa (Medicago Sativa L.), Thamir S. Al-Niemi
Effect Of Salinity (Nacl) On Germination, Growth, Ion Accumulation, And Protein Synthesis In Alfalfa (Medicago Sativa L.), Thamir S. Al-Niemi
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
To study the effect of NaCl stress on gene expression in alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), greenhouse and laboratory experiments were conducted with 22 cultivars during germination and post-germination growth. The ability of alfalfa cultivars to germinate at the different NaCl concentrations was not related to their postgermination performance (salt tolerance) under those conditions.
Genetic effects were evident for Na and Cl ion uptake and accumulation in alfalfa shoots and roots. The strategies of alfalfa cultivars to cope with NaCl stress includes exclusion of Na from shoots and Cl from roots or from the whole plant depending on cultivar and …

Comparison Of The Phosphate Requirements Of Burr Medic And Yellow Serradella With That Of Wheat In The Low Rainfall Wheatbelt Of Western Australia, Blakely Paynter, Mike D. Bolland
Comparison Of The Phosphate Requirements Of Burr Medic And Yellow Serradella With That Of Wheat In The Low Rainfall Wheatbelt Of Western Australia, Blakely Paynter, Mike D. Bolland
Grain and Other Field Crops Research Articles
The responses of burr medic (Medicago polymorpha) and yellow serradella (Ornithopus compressus) to topdressed phosphate were compared with the response of wheat (Triticum aestivum) to drilled phosphate on a range of soils in the low rainfall wheatbelt of Western Australia. Species were compared firstly on the amount of applied phosphorus (P) required for 90% maximum yield at 3 harvests, and secondly on the ratio of their curvature coefficients from the Mitscherlich relationship between absolute yield and P applied. On 7 marginally acidic, medium-textured soils, the comparative requirements of burr medic (cvv. Serena or Santiago) and wheat (cv. Gutha) for applied …

Grazing Alfalfa — State Perspective, W. Roy Burris, Garry D. Lacefield
Grazing Alfalfa — State Perspective, W. Roy Burris, Garry D. Lacefield
Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference
Alfalfa has been grown in Kentucky for many years, but in the last decade, its acreage has increased dramatically- from 208,000 in 1978 to 350,000 in 1981 (Ky. Agri. Statistics Service). Alfalfa is generally thought of as a hay crop but the practice of grazing alfalfa has received considerable attention recently. Much of this interest was generated by "Graze-More-Beef" demonstrations which have been conducted in the state. Demonstrations in which alfalfa was grazed averaged 791 pounds per acre during 1986-1988. Alfalfa's ability to withstand dry weather and its excellent nutritional qualities make it an attractive grazing alternative to fescue - …

Bulletin 4247 - Introduction To Commercial Mushroom Growing, Margaret Graham
Bulletin 4247 - Introduction To Commercial Mushroom Growing, Margaret Graham
Bulletins 4000 -
Mushroom cultivation began in Australia in the 1930s in the then incomplete and unused Circular Quay railway tunnel in Sydney. In the 1950s most mushrooms were grown in heaped or 'ridge-beds' of compost in disused railway tunnels.
In the last 15 to 20 years there has been considerable technical change in the method and degree of sophistication of mushroom cultivation techniques. Most growers have invested large sums of capital in specially designed and insulated buildings that control temperature, humidity and ventilation and where pest and disease prevention and control is less difficult.
The bag method also helps to alleviate pest …
Effect Of Light, Nitrogen, And Water Management On Rice (Oryza Sativa) Tolerance To Fenoxaprop, Roy J. Smith Jr., Aurora M. Baltazar, Paolo Nastasi
Effect Of Light, Nitrogen, And Water Management On Rice (Oryza Sativa) Tolerance To Fenoxaprop, Roy J. Smith Jr., Aurora M. Baltazar, Paolo Nastasi
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
The effect of light intensity, nitrogen (N), and water management on rice (Oryza sativa cv. 'Newbonnet' and 'Lemont') tolerance to fenoxaprop {(+)-2-[4[(6-chloro-2-benzoxazolyl)oxy]phenoxy]propanoic acid} was determined in two field studies at the Rice Research and Extension Center, Stuttgart, AR, in 1988 and 1989. In one study, 'Newbonnet' rice was treated with 0.22 kgai ha-1fenoxaprop at 0, 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, 14, and 28 days after N application and flooding. Moderate to severe foliar chlorosis, stunting, and stand and yield reductions occurred when fenoxaprop was applied within 7 days after N application and flooding. None to slight injury or yield reduction …
Breeding Systems In Spiranthes Magnicamporum Sheviak, Christopher D. Loyet
Breeding Systems In Spiranthes Magnicamporum Sheviak, Christopher D. Loyet
Masters Theses
A study of the ecology, breeding systems, and pollinators of Spiranthes magnicamporum Sheviak was undertaken in fall 1992. An initial survey of three glacial drift hill prairies revealed sexual activity in this species via removed pollinia. Two hill prairie populations were used for pollination study. In each population, five individuals were randomly selected and crossed using autogamic, geitonogamic, and xenogamic methods. In addition, ten individuals were fitted with pollinator-exclusion bags. After capsule formation, all plants were harvested. They were examined in the lab for general morphology, the presence or absence of embryo formation, and the prescence of sexual or asexual …
Bulletin 4256 - Pecan Nut Cultivation, Aldo Labrosciano
Bulletin 4256 - Pecan Nut Cultivation, Aldo Labrosciano
Bulletins 4000 -
Pecans Carya illinoensis, an indigenous species to Northern America, are successfully grown between the latitudes of 25° and 35°. There is considerable variation in size and flavour of the 1000 or more varieties of the nuts.
Large scale production is concentrated in north America, Israel and South Africa. Plantings in Australia are in Victoria and New South Wales, and are developing slowly in Western Australia.
Pecans are well suited to Western Australian conditions where the soil is well drained. Though the trees are deciduous, they have no chill requirement and will flourish if water is not limiting.

Dependence Of 3 Nebraska Sandhills Warm-Season Grasses On Vesicular-Arbuscular Mycorrhizae, John J. Brejda, D. H. Yocom, Lowell E. Moser, Steven S. Waller
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizae (VAM) are rare or absent in actively eroding soils of the Sandhills. The objective of this study was to determine if 3 major Sandhills warm-season grasses used in reseeding eroded Sandhills sites are highly mycorrhizal dependent, and evaluate the response of VAM at different phosphorus (P) levels. In 2 greenhouse experiments, sand bluestem [Andropogon gerardii var. paucipilus (Nash) Fern.], switchgrass, (Panicum virgatum L.), and prairie sandreed [Calamovilfa longifolio (Hook) Scribn.] were grown in steam-sterilized sand in pots and inoculated with either indigenous Sandhills VAM, Glomus deserticola, or noninoculated. In the second experiment, VAM inoculated …

Comparison Of The Phosphate Requirements Of Burr Medic And Yellow Serradella With Subterranean Clover In The Low Rainfall Wheatbelt Of Western Australia, Blakely Paynter
Grain and Other Field Crops Research Articles
Burr medic (Medicago polymorpha) and yellow serradella (Ornithopus compressus) were compared with subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum) in their response to freshly topdressed phosphate in the low rainfall wheatbelt of Western Australia. Species were compared on the amount of applied phosphorus (P) required for 90% maximum yield and the ratio of their curvature coefficients from the Mitscherlich relationship between P applied and absolute yield. On marginally acidic, medium-textured soils, burr medic had a higher external shoot requirement for applied P than subterranean clover. Relative differences between the species were affected by season, initial concentration of bicarbonate-extractable P in the soil (0-10 …
