The Combined Effects Of Nacl And Beet Juice On Germination And Early Seedling Growth Among Raphanus Sativus L., Justin Howell

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Salt pollution and soil salinization via secondary pathways is a global problem. One practice which contributes to increased salinity in soils and other natural systems is the application of road deicers in colder regions. Increased salinity in soils negatively affects plant growth and microbial activity. In an effort to decrease the amount of salt applied to roads, salts are applied as brine. Liquid organic additives are incorporated into these brines to foster better adherence of the salt to impermeable surfaces. One common additive is beet juice, a byproduct of sugar extraction. Beet juice contains high levels of phosphorus and organic …

Transcriptomic Profile Of Armillaria Root Rot Fungi Affecting The U.S. Stone Fruit Industry, Jared Weaver

All Theses

Armillaria Root Rot (ARR) is a significant replant disease threatening the future of the United States stone fruit industry. Economic loss in South Carolina peach orchards is estimated to be $8M annually due to approximately 3-4% of annual tree deaths caused by ARR on replant sites. Management solutions are insufficient and can at best extend the life of the orchards on replant sites. The only solution to solving the ARR problem, apart from abandoning the replant site for peach production, is planting orchards on ARR-resistant rootstock. Significant progress has been made towards providing growers with genetically resistant rootstock, however, for …

Four studies were conducted to evaluate the impact the impact of 1) static (NE Yield Goal) vs. dynamic nitrogen (N) recommendations tools (Maize-N, Canopy Reflectance Sensing, Granular, and Adapt-N), 2) three N (optimum, suboptimum, and low) and irrigation rates (farmer’s full irrigation (FIT), 80% FIT, and 60% FIT), 3) conventional N sources vs. enhanced efficiency fertilizers (EEFs), and 4) multiple N splits (2, 3, 4, and 5-N splits) on agronomic (maize yield), environmental (NO3-N leaching), and economic returns (return …

Using Annual Forages To Replace Declining Cool-Season Grass Pasture Availability, Jonathon Matthew Jenkins May 2024

Using Annual Forages To Replace Declining Cool-Season Grass Pasture Availability, Jonathon Matthew Jenkins

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

As land area in grain crop production increases in the US Midwest, perennial pasture availability decreases but the demand increases. Matching the seasonal growth patterns of C3 and C4 plant species to grow forages that are complementary allows producers to fill production gaps in otherwise monoculture systems and possibly increase overall productivity. One way to fill the forage production gap of C3 grass dominated pastures is by producing a warm-season, annual forage in a separate field. However, with continual reductions in land availability, this may not be an option. Using two studies, our objectives were to improve …

Nutrient Management Of Cannabis In Controlled Environments, Julie A. Hershkowitz May 2024

Nutrient Management Of Cannabis In Controlled Environments, Julie A. Hershkowitz

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present

Cannabis has been cultivated for millennia as a multipurpose crop for food, fiber, and medicine. Secondary metabolites called cannabinoids, including cannabidiol (CBD) and the psychoactive Δ-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ-9 THC), are responsible for the medicinal properties of cannabis. The intoxicating nature of THC resulted in legislation prohibiting the possession and production of cannabis within the United States during the 20th century. As a result, research programs on cannabis production were halted at most institutions. In recent years, cannabis production has become widespread within the US as a result of increasing legalization. However, modern cannabis production nutrient management programs often include …

However, the processes to utilize these systems have proven to be more difficult than expected, …

Production And Heat Unit Accumulation Tracking Of Long-Cane Blackberry In Controlled Environments, Leala Machesney May 2024

Production And Heat Unit Accumulation Tracking Of Long-Cane Blackberry In Controlled Environments, Leala Machesney

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Consumer demand for locally produced and high-quality blackberries is projected to increase. Most blackberry production is field-based, however, there is interest in producing blackberries using soilless culture and “long-cane” technique, where plants are grown in containers and trellised vertically. Soilless “long-cane” production of blackberries is viewed as a possible solution to the yield losses caused by soilborne pathogens such as Fusarium oxysporum, and methods of soil-borne pathogen control have become increasingly difficult with the ban of methyl bromide, a highly effective and widely used but environmentally harmful soil fumigant. Other reported benefits of soilless caneberry production include greater yields, increased …

Turfgrass Soil Surfactants: Examining Active Ingredients, Application Strategies, And The Structure–Function Relationship In Sand-Based Putting Greens, Daniel O'Brien May 2024

Turfgrass Soil Surfactants: Examining Active Ingredients, Application Strategies, And The Structure–Function Relationship In Sand-Based Putting Greens, Daniel O'Brien

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Soil surfactants, commonly referred to as wetting agents, are a leading water management strategy for golf courses. Non-ionic block copolymers are the most common type of turfgrass soil surfactant. However, differences in the registration process and labeling requirements allow soil surfactants to enter the marketplace accompanied by far-less data compared to other products used on golf courses. This has led to considerable confusion among golf course superintendents. Three primary sources of confusion are: (i) the widely-used marketing terminology of “penetrants” and “retainers” to classify wetting agents; (ii) active ingredients which in some cases are not disclosed at all; and (iii) …

Ecosystem Response To Increasing Hurricane Disturbance: Comparing Nutrient Cycling Dynamics Associated With Early- And Late-Successional Tree Species In A Wet Tropical Forest, Miriam Kleit

Biology Honors Projects

Puerto Rico has seen changes in the frequency and severity of disturbances in recent years as hurricanes become more frequent and more intense under climate change. In ecosystems experiencing increasing disturbances, we expect that species composition will shift as early successional trees become more common. These changes to species composition and community ecology are likely to affect terrestrial nutrient cycling both directly and indirectly, and it is still not well understood how shifting community composition may alter ecosystem functioning. To address this gap, I measured carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) variables in soils, microbial biomass, roots, leaves, and soil greenhouse …

Harmonizing Soybean-Associated Beneficial Bacteria For Sustainable Cultivation, Jonas J. Padilla Apr 2024

Harmonizing Soybean-Associated Beneficial Bacteria For Sustainable Cultivation, Jonas J. Padilla

LSU Master's Theses

Long-term reliance on agrochemicals, such as fertilizers and pesticides, to improve crop productivity can severely impact soil physicochemical properties and health. This eventually leads us to completely depend on these chemicals to sustain the needs of our crops. To resuscitate the deteriorating state of our arable lands, we need to shift from traditional farming to more sustainable crop management. One of the alternatives that we can use instead of these chemicals is the utilization of microorganisms that can perform a variety of beneficial functions for the growth and development of crops. Recently, seed-treating materials made up of bacterial consortia were …

Effects Of Uv Filter Pollutants On The Growth Of Cucurbits And Possible Implications For Humans, Leia Staples

Undergraduate Theses

One main area of concern is the use of personal care products and pharmaceuticals in society and their long-term persistence when released into the environment (Chaturvedi et al. 2021). Cucurbits, however, are well-known for taking up pollutants (Namiki et al. 2013, Christou et al. 2019, Komives et al. 2009), so it essential to ensure that these pollutants do not negatively affect growth or productivity of plants. These plants are particularly useful in society because they have many health benefits and are consumed regularly by humans. While much research has been done on how much of the pollutant travels throughout the …
