A Study Of The Phylogenetic Relationships Of Agropyron Scribneri, Agropyron Trachycaulum, And Sitanion Hystrix, C. Lorenzo Pope
A Study Of The Phylogenetic Relationships Of Agropyron Scribneri, Agropyron Trachycaulum, And Sitanion Hystrix, C. Lorenzo Pope
Theses and Dissertations
Agropyron scribneri Vasey (spreading wheatgrass) is endemic to the Rocky Mountains of the Intermountain West. Each distinct population is widely separeated by valley and desert floors. It is morphologically similar to the hybrid between Agropyron trachycaulum (Link) Malte and Sitanion hystrix between Agropyron trachycaulum (Link) Malte and Sitanion hystrix (Nutt.) J. G. Smith as well as the hybrid, A. trachycaulum x A. scribneri. It appears that A. scribneri may have originated de novo from hybidization products of A. trachycaulum and S. hystrix. Agropyron scribneri appears to be morphologically similar to the population of S. hysterix with which it is associated. …

Reproductive Wastage In Sheep On Clover Areas, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Reproductive Wastage In Sheep On Clover Areas, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Western Australia's 67 per cent lambing for 1970 compares poorly with that of other Australian States, and other countries. From the 12.3 million ewes mated in this State's agricultural areas in 1970, only 8.2 million lambs were marked.
This low 77.7 per cent conception rate sparked the present series of reproductive wastage investigations by the Department's Sheep and Wool Branch.
This report describes the first year's results of the project in W.A.'s "clover disease" areas.

A Study Of Seed Germination And Establishment Of Seedlings Of Lodgepole Pine In Different Soil Types Under Certain Bog Conditions, Yun-Fan Yuan
Theses and Dissertations
Soil texture, organic matter content, and hydrogen-ion concentration of soil samples were determined to find the correlation between soil characteristics, seed germination and seedling establishment of Pinus contorta. Scarification and stratification were treatments used for determining germination requirements of dormant seeds. Seeds were planted in different soils and experiments were conducted to determine the effects of different light intensities, temperatures, and depths of the water table on apparent photosynthesis rate and seedling establishment. Soil samples, pine cones, and young trees needed for the experiments were collected near Lily Lake, in the Uintah Mountains. The greatest and the fastest germination was …

Some Effects Of The Under Snow Environment On Growth And Carbohydrate Content Of Claytonia Lanceolata Pursh, Bryce D. Bennett
Some Effects Of The Under Snow Environment On Growth And Carbohydrate Content Of Claytonia Lanceolata Pursh, Bryce D. Bennett
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Studies were conducted in a mountain habitat to determine the effects of altered light and temperature upon the natural growth and/or carbohydrate cycles of Claytonia lanceolata during the period of winter snow cover. Treatments included natural control, light exclusion, and temperature alteration by insulation and by heating for a brief period. Monthly measurements were made of soil temperature (upper 12 cm), shoot development, soluble sugar, and soluble starch. The quantity and quality of light penetrating the snow cover was also determined.
About 0.0052% of the available visible light (400-750 nm) penetrated 70 cm of snow and 0.02% penetrated 50 cm …

A Taxonomic Study Of Crotaphytus Collaris Between The Rio Grande And Colorado Rivers, William Ingram Iii, Wilmer W. Tanner
Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series
Little work has been done previously on the taxonomy of Crotaphytus collaris baileyi. This and the demonstration by Fitch and Tanner that C. c. baileyi is a heterogeneous grouping prompted the present study. Only the populations of the type material, the Upper Colorado River Basin, and the Chihuahuan Desert were studied. Multivariate, variance, canonical and discriminant analyses of external characters were performed, and pattern-coloration characters were examined on living specimens.
The results of the analyses show significance between all three populations. The discriminant functions distinguished between the populations with 80% reliability and patternal characters were discriminatory with near 100% reliability. …

An Ecological Study Of Coliform Bacteria Associated With Vaccinium Corymbosum, Harry C. Bittenbender
An Ecological Study Of Coliform Bacteria Associated With Vaccinium Corymbosum, Harry C. Bittenbender
Honors Theses
Recent research has shown that there are coliform populations associated with the cultivated high bush blueberry, Vaccinium corynbosum. This study is aimed at determining the ecology of these colofirms, as they are related to blueberry production from the farm to the warehouse. Tests will be made to identify the Salmonella group, those associated with "food poisoning." Total bacterial coliform counts will also be made. This paper is primarily an ecological study of the coliforms found on blueberry farms near Grand Junction, though fruit samples were taken from all warehouses of the M.B.G.A.

Aquatic And Semi-Aquatic Plant Communities Of Utah Lake, Robert E. Coombs
Theses and Dissertations
The aquatic and semi-aquatic plant communities of Utah Lake, Utah County, Utah are discussed. This discussion includes the methods of describing and delimiting the major vascular plant communities, the descriptions of the present existent communities, and the determination of the vegetational changes, particularly since 1925. The vegetation around Utah Lake is divided into plant communities. Each community is discussed using: (a) quantitative data, (b) field observations, (c) general and specific locations of the community, and (d) interrelationships and trends of the community. Historical vegetational changes of Utah Lake plant communities are discussed. In this discussion, the plant communities described by …
Pinyon-Juniper Succession After Natural Fires On Residual Soils Of Mesa Verde, Colorado, James A. Erdman
Pinyon-Juniper Succession After Natural Fires On Residual Soils Of Mesa Verde, Colorado, James A. Erdman
Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series
A mountain brush vegetation typified by Gambel oak (Quercus gambelii) and serviceberry (Amelanchier utahensis) dominates the uplands of Mesa Verde National Park. There is evidence that this brush element is a successional stage that has been maintained by repeated natural fires in a large part of the Mesa Verde landscape. This study was conducted to determine the role of fire in the region's ecology, the nature of the climax pinyon pine (Pinus edulis) and Utah juniper (Juniperus osteosperma) vegetation, and the major successional stages that lead to the climax condition.

A Taxonomic And Ecological Study Of The Desmids Of Lily Lake, James L. Pederson
Theses and Dissertations
During the summero f 1964 a taxonomica and ecological study was made of the desmids (microscopic green algae) found in Lily Lake. The study site is a subalpine lake in the Wasatch National Forest of the Uinta Mountains, Utah. The lake is located about one-half mile west of Trial Lake at an elevation of approximately 10,000 feet. The lake is an acidic, cold, lentic bog pond characteristic of this region. Desmids were collected at weekly intervals from seven sampling sites. The water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, light conditions and length of day from sunrise to sunset were recorded at the …

A Study Of Conifer Invasion Into Meadows Surrounding Small Lakes And Ponds In The Trial Lake Region Of The Western Uinta Mountains, David Harvey Firmage
Theses and Dissertations
The object of this study was to determine whether or not Lodgepole pine is successfully invading meadows near ponds in the western Uinta Mountains as a preliminary step to the invasion of the Spruce-Fir climax forest. Line transects were established at three sites near Trial Lake extending from forest to wet meadow. Along these transects the soil was studied to determine percent organic matter, pH, depth to mineral soil, and texture. Also the depth of the water table was measured and the topography plotted. The age and size of the trees along the transect was determined, and the extent of …

Aquatic fungi in-Powell's Slough were.studied in 1967 & 1968. Collections were made and water temperature, oxygen content & pH values were measured at weekly intervals. For collections, wire baskets containing substrata were submerged in water for one month. After collecting, substrata were brought to the laboratory. Identification was based on the keys of Sparrow, 1960. Aquatic fungi identified included seven orders, nine families, fifteen genera, and thirty species, from thirty-three collections of fifteen types of substrata. The substrata used in this study were: (i) fruits: apples, rose hips, plums, pears, haws; (ii) twigs: poplar, weeping willow, river birch, weeping white …
Overwintering Of Erwinia Amylovora Inside Living Host Tissue In Cache Valley, Utah, G. Doyle Morrill
Overwintering Of Erwinia Amylovora Inside Living Host Tissue In Cache Valley, Utah, G. Doyle Morrill
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Experiments were conducted to see if Erwinia amylovora (Burrill) Winslow et al. overwinters inside living host tissue in Utah. Bacteria, collected from apple, pear, mountain ash, chokecherry and Pyracantha, were used in the experiment. Isolates taken from buds and inner bark plated on nutrient yeast dextrose agar, we re tested by serological and bacteriophage techniques. Those showing positive tests were then inoculated into Bartlett pear seedlings to test virulence.
Both virulent and avirulent isolates were isolated from each species of plant in the experiment. Pathogenic bacteria were isolated from diseased tissue near cankers, as well as from apparently healthy inner …

Light Interception And Radiative Exchange In Crop Stands, John Monteith
Light Interception And Radiative Exchange In Crop Stands, John Monteith
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Crops grow and use water because they intercept radiation from the sun, the .sky, and the atmosphere. Diurnal changes of solar radiation dictate the diurnal course of photosynthesis and transpiration, and the vertical gradient of radiant flux in a canopy is a measure of the absorption of energy by foliage at different heights. Without exaggeration, the distribution of radiation within a plant community is the most important single element of microclimate.
Early ecological studies of radiation climate were mainly descriptive and were limited in scope by rather primitive instrumentation. A new quantitative approach to the subject was initiated by Monsi …
