Susceptibility Of Selected Alfalfa Clones To Lygus Bugs In Relationship To Seed Production, Charles G. Summers
Susceptibility Of Selected Alfalfa Clones To Lygus Bugs In Relationship To Seed Production, Charles G. Summers
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Utah ranks as one of the major producers of alfalfa seed in the nation. In 1964, 6.02 million pounds of cleaned seed were produced in the state. This resulted in an income of 1.7 million dollars to Utah seed producers for that year (Agricultural Statistics, 1965).

A Study Of The Factors Influencing The Synthesis Of Tobacco Mosaic Viral Rna In A Partially Purified Synthesizing System, Agnes P. Fok
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Research on biosynthesis of tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) ribonucleic acid (RNA) in vitro has been reported by Cochran, et al; Karasek and Schramm; Kim and Wildman; Cornuet and Astier; and Tongur and Baland in. It has been postulated that the replication of a number of viruses containing single-stranded RNA is accompanied by the formation of a virus-specific double-stranded helical RNA, the replicative form. This has been demonstrated both for animal and bacterial viruses including MS2. The double helical structure of purified replicative form of MS2 was established by X-ray diffraction studies. One of the strands was shown to be a …
The Complex Formation Of Silver Ion With Ribonucleic Acid, Guanosine, Inosine And Related Compounds And Peroxidase-Like Activity Of A Haemundecapeptide Prepared From Horse Heart Cytochrome C, José Angel Reinosa
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The importance of nucleic acids in plant and animal cells as carriers of genetic information and as protein biosynthesis agents is well recognized. It is also known that nucleic acid is a component of all viruses.
Takahashi (45) and Fraenkel-Conrat (16) demonstrated that the protein component of tobacco mosaic virus is non-infectious to the host plant, although it is identical to the original virus morphologically. The virus ribonucleic acid (RNA) alone was infectious, however.
Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), which is present in chromosomes, displays a very specific function. The chromosome long has been accepted as the carrier of the hereditary unit, …

Continuous Grazing On Rose Clover At Northampton, R J. Parkin
Continuous Grazing On Rose Clover At Northampton, R J. Parkin
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
BECAUSE of its upright growth habit, it is often thought that rose clover may require some form of specialised grazing management.
It has also been said that the sheep find the plant and in particular the seed head, undesirable in the dry stages.
However, more recent observations refute this (Bailey 1966). The present commonly-grown strains of rose clover are later flowering generally than the medics or Geraldton subterranean clover and stay green later in the season.

Stocking Rate And Rate Of Superphosphate In A Higher Rainfall Area, P P. Mann, B. J. Gorddard, R. N. Glencross, E. N. Fitzpatrick
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
In its virgin state the area carried a forest association of red-gum and jarrah, and the soils are typical of large areas in the south-west of Western Australia.
These gravelly soils have a high requirement for phosphate during their first years under pasture, and this trial was designed to investigate the relationship between rate of phosphate, stocking rate and pasture production over a number of seasons.

Changes In Fungi With Age I. Chemical Composition Of Rhizoctonia Solani And Sclerotium Bataticola , David Gottlieb, James L. Van Etten
Changes In Fungi With Age I. Chemical Composition Of Rhizoctonia Solani And Sclerotium Bataticola , David Gottlieb, James L. Van Etten
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
The chemical composition of the mycelium of Rhizoctonia solani and Sclerotium bataticola was determined in cells of various ages. The percentage, per unit of dry weight, of soluble amino nitrogen, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), ribonucleic acid (RNA), ergosterol, and protein decreased with age in both fungi. Total lipids and fatty acids increased with age in S. bataticola but remained constant in R. solani. Total carbohydrate increased with age in R. solani and decreased in S. bataticola. Fewer changes with age were observed when the results were calculated in ratio to DNA. There was no change in the ratios of protein, …

Changes In Fungi With Age Ii. Respiration And Respiratory Enzymes Of Rhizoctonia Solani And Sclerotium Bataticola, James L. Van Etten, H. Peter Molitoris, David Gottlieb
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
The rate of respiration of Rhizoctonia solani and Sclerotium bataticola decreased with age. This decrease in respiratory rate might be produced by a decrease in the specific activity of one or more enzymes involved in carbohydrate metabolism. Specific activities in cell-free extracts were measured for most of the enzymes in the hexose monophosphate shunt, Embden-Meyerhof-Parnas pathway, tricarboxylic acid cycle, and terminal electron-transport system. In addition, glucose oxidase, isocitritase, and malic enzyme were measured. In R. solani, increases in activity with age occurred for hexokinase, α-glycerolphosphate dehydrogenase, malic dehydrogenase, and cytochrome oxidase. Decreases occurred for phosphohexokinase, aconitase, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide-specific …

Where Is Moly?, A. L. Hatfield
Where Is Moly?, A. L. Hatfield
Agronomy Notes
Is moly in hiding or has it gone down the river? Recent tests in Graves County suggest that it is probably just in hiding.
Moly (molybdenum) is of importance to Kentucky farmers because of its unique relation to soil acidity and legume growth. Many other trace or minor elements necessary for plant growth are most available to crops under acid soil conditions. Molybdenum becomes more available as the soil acidity approaches neutrality.

A Survey Of The State Of Utah For Areas Infested With The Stem Nematode Of Alfalfa, Dwayne R. Buxton
A Survey Of The State Of Utah For Areas Infested With The Stem Nematode Of Alfalfa, Dwayne R. Buxton
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Plant nematodes belong to a large group of invertebrates known as round worms, They derive their name from the Greek word "nema," meaning thread. In literature some authors refer to nematodes as nemas. In England and many parts of the United States, plant-parasitic nematodes are called eelworms.
While some damage to plants results from mechanical injury, salivary secretions injected by the nematode into the plant are usually the major cause of damage. Experiments conducted in the first part of the present century have demonstrated large differences in plant growth in soil infested with nematodes and soil freed of nematodes by …

Host-Parasite Relationships Between Prunus Mahaleb And The Parasitic Nematodes Pratylenchus Neglectus And Meloidogyne Hapla, Bernard Al Tait
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Utah orchardists have encountered problems which they have needed to control for continued successful and economical fruit production. Some of these problems are diseases such as western-X virus, cytospora canker (Wadley, 1955) and codling moth (Davis, 1957). These diseases, because of their nature and severity, have received more attention than others.
