Plants
This publication provides introductory information on the Plant Information Network (PIN) and a print-out of PIN data. The PIN was a computerized data base containing information on native and naturalized vascular plants of five Western States. Information was included on over 5,000 species found in Colordo, Montana, North Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming. Because of funding restrictions PIN is no longer operated as a computerized data base. This publication makes the PIN data available to resource managers, planners, and others who have a continuing need for this information.
Approximately 500 descriptors were included in the data base for each species. These …

Bulletin Ma 20 - Sheep Yard Plans - Flocks Up To 500, D. Bicknell
Animal production and livestock published reports
Manjimup Regional Office
Owners of small flocks often use much more labour per sheep than do owners of large flocks. Most of the difference in labour use is the design of sheep sheds and sheep yards, and a smaller affect from the mob size and experience in handling sheep.
This booklet gives some detail on design and construction of yards and a number of yard plans to handle up to 500 or so sheep. Many of the plans are from an Australian Wool Corporation publicatiot1 "Wool Harvesting Notes".

N:S Ratio Of Forages In Kentucky, Kenneth L. Wells
Agronomy Notes
Concern has been expressed during recent years that sulfur may have become more limiting for plant growth and subsequently ruminant animal nutrition than was expected. This likelihood is based largely on the fact that (a) the inherent sulfur content of fertilizer phosphates has greatly diminished with declining use of normal superphosphate in manufacture of mixed fertilizers, (b) increased regulatory effect on burning of high sulfur fuels, and (c) increased use of nitrogen fertilizers for production of animal feeds. Assumedly, any or all these factors could result in alteration of nitrogen and sulfur content of forages to the point that either …

Quality Traits In Forage Sorghum Harvested At Early Head Emergence And At Physiological Maturity, Jeffrey F. Pedersen, Francis A. Haskins, H. J. Gorz
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Information about the extent of variation in quality traits among plants sampled at the same developmental stage but on different dates would be useful to forage researchers. The primary purpose of this study was to obtain such information for five forage sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] cultivars. Percent dry matter, crude protein, and in vitro dry matter disappearance of leaf, stem, and whole plant samples were determined for field-grown samples harvested on three different days during early head emergence (EHE) and once during physiological maturity (PM) for each cultivar. Orthogonal comparisons between EHE and PM sampling stages and among …

Performance Of Tall Fescue Varieties, Robert C. Buckner, Paul B. Burrus Ii, Nelson Gay, Garry D. Lacefield
Agronomy Notes
The objective of the tall fescue breeding program is the development of varieties characterized by superior nutritive value (including reduced contents of perloline and loline alkaloids and the fungal endophyte, Epichloe typhina), palatability, disease resistance, and adaptation through the utilization of intergeneric and interspecific hybrid derivatives of ryegrass and tall fescue species. Varieties previously released from the breeding program were, Kentucky 31, Kenwell, and Kenhy. Johnstone tall fescue, developed cooperatively by the Kentucky Agricultural Experiment Station and USDA-ARS, was released March 1, 1982, as,a new variety. Johnstone is characterized as having low levels of perloline alkaloid and the fungal endophyte, …

The Effects Of So2 On N2-Fixation, Carbon Partitioning, And Yield Components In Snapbean, Phaseolus Vulgaris L., Stephen M. Griffith
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The primary air pollutant sulfur dioxide has been shown to affect plant biochemistry and physiology, although very little is known about its effects on N2-fixation in legumes.
This study was designed to determine if N2-fixation, carbon partitioning , and productivity are affected under short term low level, so2 exposures.
Greenhouse grown snapbeans (Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Earliwax), 29 days from planting, were exposed to 0.0, 0.4, and 0.8 parts per million sulfur dioxide for 4 hours day-1 for 5 days in a fumigation chamber. At these concentrations there was no visible damage of …
The Photoregulation Of Phenylpropanoid Metabolism And Amino Acid Accumulation In Triticum Aestivum (Var. Fremont), Daniel J. Guerra
The Photoregulation Of Phenylpropanoid Metabolism And Amino Acid Accumulation In Triticum Aestivum (Var. Fremont), Daniel J. Guerra
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) grown in controlled environments with a 24-hour photoperiod was analyzed for phenylpropanoid and amino acid metabolites. Discrete spectral environments, including a metal halide, high-pressure sodium and low-pressure sodium lamps, provided both photosynthetically active radiation and phenylpropanoid inducing fluences of light. A greenhouse spectral environment supplemented with fluorescent lamps was also used to culture wheat. All four spectral environments were used to culture wheat to maturity separately. The activities of phenylalanine and tyrosine ammonia-lyase were photoinduced in wheat tissue obtained from plants grown in the metal halide, high-pressure sodium and greenhouse spectral environments. These enzyme activities are …

False Positive Results In The Vanillin-Hel Assay Of Tannins In Sorghum Forage, M. F. Walton, Francis A. Haskins, H. J. Gorz
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Vanillin-HCl procedures are widely used for the assay of tannins in plants. In attempts to adapt such procedures for use with sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench.] forage it was found that false positive reactions resulted, that is, red color developed in the presence of HCl with or without vanillin. Leucoanthocyanidins (monomeric proanthocyanidins) may be the constituents responsible for this red color. A "chloroform-HCl" procedure was developed for measuring leucoanthocyanidins in sorghum forage. The procedure avoids interference by chlorophyll or other chloroform-soluble constituents. With vanillin added to the solution, this procedure should also be useful for the assay of condensed …

Variability For Traits Used To Estimate Silage Quality In Forage Sorghum Hybrids, Jeffrey F. Pedersen, Francis A. Haskins, H. J. Gorz, R. Britton
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
The variation among 49 F1 forage sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench.] hybrids from a 7 X 7 cross-classified design was explored in 1979 and 1980 for the following silage traits: dry matter (DM), crude protein, in vitro dry matter disappearance (IVDMD), neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, acid detergent lignin, ammonia, lactate, and Brix of the juice from fresh stalks. Wider ranges generally were found for male than for female parental means. Means for most traits were significantly different among entries. Significant differences among hybrid means over males and over females were found for only DM, IVDMD, and …
The Effect Of Indoleacetic Acid And Related Chemicals On Growth Patterns Of Decapitated Bean Plants, Lewis V. Buchanan
The Effect Of Indoleacetic Acid And Related Chemicals On Growth Patterns Of Decapitated Bean Plants, Lewis V. Buchanan
Masters Theses
Bean plants were used to study effects of IAA and related chemicals on plant growth patterns. Plant apical growth tips were removed, eliminating apical donimance. Decapitated plants were treated in experimental groups with IAA, tryptophan, 5-hydroxy indoleacetic acid, serotonin, and melatonin. Two other groups served as controls, one cut, and one uncut.
Growth measurements were taken to determine if the treatments could effectively restore apical dominance. Cut control plants showed a loss of apical dominance, with decreased apical growth, and release of inhibition of axillary growth, when compared to the uncut group.
Tryptophan and meltonin treatments restored little or no …

Yield, Vigor, And Persistence Of Sand Lovegrass [Eragrostis Trichodes (Nutt.) Wood] Following Clipping Treatments, Lowell E. Moser, L. J. Perry
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Individual sand lovegrass [Eragrostis trichodes (Nutt.) Wood.] plants on a choppy sands range site in Nebraska’s Sandhills were clipped with 7 different harvest regimes for 3 years to determine critical defoliation times. After 3 years unclipped plants had the greatest survival rate and plants harvested only once a year on June 10 or July 10 survived better than those with other harvest regimes. Top and root yields, new tiller counts, and total non-structural carbohydrate (TNC) levels were all reduced severely with multiple harvests within one year. Sand lovegrass plants cannot tolerate close defoliation at anytime of the year although …
Weed Management In Alfalfa, William W. Witt
Weed Management In Alfalfa, William W. Witt
Kentucky Alfalfa and Stored Forage Conference
Weeds compete with alfalfa for water, nutrients, light, and space. This competition can decrease yields, lower forage quality, increase disease and insect problems, create harvesting problems, and initiate or poison the animals which will consume the forage. Premature loss of alfalfa stands is usually the result of the interaction of the pest complex - diseases, insects, and weeds.

Great Basin Naturalist
The Pyramid Lake Lahontan cutthroat trout (Salmo clarki henshawi) population was sampled on a monthly basis from November 1975 through December 1977. A subsample of 676 trout, stratified by fish size and lake habitat, provided biological data. The entire population is presently derived from hatchery production, stocked at lengths of approximately 75 to 300 mm. Peak annulus formation occurs in March and April, followed by the period of maximum growth. Scale patterns illustrate a variable growing season. Maximum growth in length is in the first three years of life; after that males begin to grow faster than females. …
