In this work, continuum kinetic formulations are employed as a mechanism to include closure physics in an extended magnetohydrodynamics model. Two continuum kinetic approaches have been implemented in the plasma fluid code NIMROD [Sovinec et al., “Nonlinear magnetohydrodynamics with high-order finite elements,” J. Comput. Phys. 195, 355 (2004)] including a Chapman–Enskog-like (CEL) formulation and a more conventional δf approach. Ion kinetic closure schemes are employed to describe the neoclassical flow properties in axisymmetric toroidal geometry. In particular, predictions for steady-state values of poloidal flow profiles in tokamak geometry are provided using both the δf formulation and two different solution …

A point source interferometer (PSI) is a device where atoms are split and recombined by applying a temporal sequence of Raman pulses during the expansion of a cloud of cold atoms behaving approximately as a point source. The PSI can work as a sensitive multi-axes gyroscope that can automatically filter out the signal from accelerations. The phase shift arising from the rotations is proportional to the momentum transferred to each atom from the Raman pulses. Therefore, by increasing the momentum transfer, it should be possible to enhance the sensitivity of the PSI. Here, we investigate the degree of enhancement in …

We propose energy band engineering to enhance tunneling electroresistance (TER) in ferroelectric tunnel junctions (FTJs). We predict that an ultrathin dielectric layer with a smaller band gap, embedded into a ferroelectric barrier layer, acts as a switch controlling high- and low-conductance states of an FTJ depending on polarization orientation. Using first-principles modeling based on density functional theory, we investigate this phenomenon for a prototypical SrRuO3/BaTiO3/SrRuO3 FTJ with a BaSnO3 monolayer embedded in the BaTiO3 barrier. We show that in such a composite-barrier FTJ, ferroelectric polarization of BaTiO3 shifts the conduction-band minimum of …

High-momentum configurations of nucleon pairs at short-distance are probed using measurements of the C-12(e, e' p) and C-12(e, e' pN) reactions (where N is either n or p), at high-Q(2) and x(B) > 1.1. The data span a missing-momentum range of 300-1000 MeV/c and are predominantly sensitive to the transition region of the strong nuclear interaction from a Tensor to Scalar interaction. The data are well reproduced by theoretical calculations using the Generalized Contact Formalism with both chiral and phenomenological nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction models. This agreement suggests that the measured high missing-momentum protons up to 1000 MeV/c predominantly belong to short-ranged …
Multi-Gaussian Random Variables For Modeling Optical Phenomena, Olga Korotkova, Milo W. Hyde Iv
Multi-Gaussian Random Variables For Modeling Optical Phenomena, Olga Korotkova, Milo W. Hyde Iv
Faculty Publications
A generalization of the classic Gaussian random variable to the family of multi-Gaussian (MG) random variables characterized by shape parameter M > 0, in addition to the mean and the standard deviation, is introduced. The probability density function (PDF) of the MG family members is an alternating series of Gaussian functions with suitably chosen heights and widths. In particular, for integer values of M, the series has a finite number of terms and leads to flattened profiles, while reducing to the classic Gaussian PDF for M = 1. For non-integer, positive values of M, a convergent infinite series of …
Identifying Geomorphological Changes Of Coastal Cliffs Through Point Cloud Registration From Uav Images, Xiangxiong Kong
Identifying Geomorphological Changes Of Coastal Cliffs Through Point Cloud Registration From Uav Images, Xiangxiong Kong
Physics and Engineering Science
Cliff monitoring is essential to stakeholders for their decision-making in maintaining a healthy coastal environment. Recently, photogrammetry-based technology has shown great successes in cliff monitoring. However, many methods to date require georeferencing efforts by either measuring geographic coordinates of the ground control points (GCPs) or using global navigation satellite system (GNSS)-enabled unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), significantly increasing the implementation costs. In this study, we proposed an alternative cliff monitoring methodology that does not rely on any georeferencing efforts but can still yield reliable monitoring results. To this end, we treated 3D point clouds of the cliff from different periods as …

Cholesterol (Chol) content in most cellular membranes does not exceed 50 mol%, only in the eye lens’s fiber cell plasma membrane, its content surpasses 50 mol%. At this high concentration, Chol induces the formation of pure cholesterol bilayer domains (CBDs), which coexist with the surrounding phospholipid-cholesterol domain (PCD). Here, we applied atomic force microscopy to study the mechanical properties of Chol/phosphatidylcholine membranes where the Chol content was increased from 0 to 75 mol%, relevant to eye lens membranes. The surface roughness of the membrane decreases with an increase of Chol content until it reaches 60 mol%, and roughness increases with …
Designing Reactive Oxygen Species Producing Materials For Cancer And Wastewater Treatments, Nil Kanatha Pandey
Designing Reactive Oxygen Species Producing Materials For Cancer And Wastewater Treatments, Nil Kanatha Pandey
Physics Dissertations - Archive
This dissertation is focused on using nanotechnology to improve conventional photodynamic therapy (PDT) and advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for cancer and wastewater treatments, respectively. Even though PDT has a great potential for cancer treatment, the insufficient penetration depth of the external light source and hypoxic nature of the tumor microenvironment severely hinder PDT’s applications in clinical settings. Fortunately, microwaves (MWs) offer a potential opportunity to overcome these limitations. In the first part of the dissertation, a facile synthesis method of copper-cysteamine (Cu-Cy) nanoparticles is discussed, and their reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and cancer cell killing performances upon MW exposure …

We experimentally probe the multilevel response of GeTe, Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST), and 4% tungsten-doped GST (W-GST) phase change materials (PCMs) using two wavelengths of light: 1550 nm, which is useful for telecom-applications, and near-infrared 780 nm, which is a standard wavelength for many experiments in atomic and molecular physics. We find that the materials behave differently with the excitation at the different wavelengths and identify useful applications for each material and wavelength. We discuss thickness variation in the thin films used as well and comment on the interaction of the interface between the material and the substrate with regard to the …
Zernike Integrated Partial Phase Error Reduction Algorithm, Stephen C. Cain
Zernike Integrated Partial Phase Error Reduction Algorithm, Stephen C. Cain
Faculty Publications
A modification to the error reduction algorithm is reported in this paper for determining the prescription of an imaging system in terms of Zernike polynomials. The technique estimates the Zernike coefficients of the optical prescription as part of a modified Gerchberg-Saxton iteration combined with a new gradient-based phase unwrapping algorithm. Zernike coefficients are updated gradually as the error reduction algorithm converges by recovering the partial pupil phase that differed from the last known pupil phase estimate. In this way the wrapped phase emerging during each iteration of the error reduction algorithm does not represent the entire wrapped phase of the …
The Foundations Of Inference And Its Application To Fundamental Physics, Nicholas Matthew Carrara
The Foundations Of Inference And Its Application To Fundamental Physics, Nicholas Matthew Carrara
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This thesis concerns the foundations of inference – probability theory, entropic inference, information geometry, etc. – and its application to the Entropic Dynamics (ED) approach to Quantum Mechanics (QM) [21, 22, 41, 53, 56–61, 150–153, 165, 195, 196, 268]. The first half of this thesis, chapters 2-6, concern the development of the inference framework. We begin in chapter 2 by discussing de- ductive inference, which involves formal logic and it’s role in access- ing the truth of propositions. We eventually discover that deductive inference is incomplete, in that it can’t address situations in which we have incomplete information. This necessitates a …
Simulation Analysis Of The Snowball Chamber, Thomas Guile
Simulation Analysis Of The Snowball Chamber, Thomas Guile
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Dark matter is non-baryonic, weakly interacting matter that makes up nearly 85% of the mass ofour universe, as seen through many different phenomena such as gravitational lensing and flat galactic rotation curves [48]. There are many experiments across the globe that are working to find these dark matter particles, but despite increasing levels of detector sensitivity, dark matter has been difficult to detect. Because of this, it is possible that dark matter has a lower mass than originally predicted. A new detector, the Snowball Chamber, could be used to aid in this search. By using the light molecule of water, …

Modeling Of Argon Bombardment And Densification Of Low Temperature Organic Precursors Using Reactive Md Simulations And Machine Learning, Kwabena Asante-Boahen
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
In this study, an important aspect of the synthesis process for a-BxC:Hy was systematically modeled by utilizing the Reactive Molecular Dynamics (MD) in modeling the argon bombardment from the orthocarborane molecules as the precursor. The MD simulations are used to assess the dynamics associated with the free radicals that result from the ion bombardment. By applying the Data Mining/Machine Learning analysis into the datasets generated from the large reactive MD simulations, I was able to identify and quality the kinetics of these radicals. Overall, this approach allows for a better understanding of the overall mechanism at the atomistic level of …

A systematic computational study to evaluate the electronic structures and transport properties including resistivity, thermal conductivity of several binary diborides (ZrB2 , TiB2 , TaB2 , CrB2 , and AlB2 ) and the ZrB2 alloyed with Cr, Al, Ti and Ta has been performed. Due to the p-d hybridization, the characteristic pseudo gap at the Fermi energy level (Ef) from the density of states (DOS) is presence in the DOS of both ZrB2 and TiB2 in contrast to those of TaB2 and CrB2 with only a partial occupation on the anti-bonding states. AlB2 is also similarly shown the presence of …

Study Of Nonlinear Optical Properties Of Gold Nanoparticles Dispersed In Nematic Liquid Crystals, Changshuo Fu
Graduate Masters Theses
Gold nanoparticles come in various sizes and shapes. Their optical properties arise from surface plasmon resonance, collective excitation/oscillation of conduction electrons. The study of the nonlinear optical properties of these materials is essential for photonic and biomedical applications. In this thesis, nonlinear optical properties of gold nanoparticles dispersed in the nematic liquid crystal were studied using optical and photoacoustic Z-scan techniques. Results show enhanced nonlinearity when gold is dispersed in planar-oriented 5CB liquid crystals compared to when liquid crystals were not oriented (degenerate). Also, sample with low gold concentration, by weight percentage, shows the better nonlinearity. Reasons behind the influence …

Combined photoelectron spectroscopic experiments and computational studies have been performed on Al3Hn- (n=1-9) clusters. Three modes of hydrogen bonding to the Al-3 moiety have been observed: terminal, bridging, and capping. Among various hydrides, Al3H5- and Al3H8- clusters have highest HOMO-LUMO gap and largest electron affinity, respectively. Our studies indicate that as the number of hydrogen atoms increase the presence of AlH2 groups, representing the tetrahedral coordination of the Al atom, which in turn led to the stoichiometric ring structure.
Acoustic Parameters As Discriminators Of Wall Events In Pico Dark Matter Search Data, Lucia Volkova
Acoustic Parameters As Discriminators Of Wall Events In Pico Dark Matter Search Data, Lucia Volkova
University Honors Program Senior Projects
Bubble chambers are one of several detector types that particle physicists use to search for the as-yet-undetected dark matter. The PICO collaboration – formed from the merger of the similar PICASSO and COUPP experiments – runs such a bubble detector using superheated fluorocarbons (with and without iodine). Bubbles that form along chamber walls exhibit different behavior than those which nucleate in the bulk of the target liquid due to shape distortions from the wall boundary; in previous analyses when searching for dark matter, these wall events have been cut from the data to control for the differing behavior using information …
Hyperpolarizability Dispersion Measured For Carbon Disulfide Vapor, Rodrigo N. Fernandez
Hyperpolarizability Dispersion Measured For Carbon Disulfide Vapor, Rodrigo N. Fernandez
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The second hyperpolarizability (γ) of carbon disulfide (CS2) was measured by gas phase electric-field-induced second harmonic generation (ESHG), for laser wavelengths in the range of 765-1064 nm. The observed hyperpolarizability is decomposed into electronic (γ^e) and vibrational (γ^v) contributions, and the dispersion curve for γ^eis extrapolated to the static limit, with the result γ^e_0 = 12558 ± 93 atomic units. The results of this experiment agree with other recent nonlinear optical measurements and theoretical calculations.
Localized Bands And Their Effects In The Strongly Correlated D And F Electron Systems: A First Principles Study, Hori Pada Sarker
Localized Bands And Their Effects In The Strongly Correlated D And F Electron Systems: A First Principles Study, Hori Pada Sarker
Physics Dissertations - Archive
Strongly correlated materials such as d and f-electron systems manifest a broad range of interesting phenomena such as metal-insulator transition, high temperature superconductivity, topologically insulating behavior etc. Due to the highly localized nature of d and f-electrons, they are tightly bound about the associated atoms within the crystal lattice and hence strongly interact with intra-site electrons and the corresponding ionic cores. Such a strong localization of electrons results in the creation of polaron quasi-particles in strongly correlated system like BiVO4, a promising photoanode material for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting for H2 fuel generation using solar irradiation. Using first principles density …
Quantitative Magnetic Resonance Imaging For The Early Prediction Of Treatment Response In Triple Negative Breast Cancer, Benjamin C. Musall
Quantitative Magnetic Resonance Imaging For The Early Prediction Of Treatment Response In Triple Negative Breast Cancer, Benjamin C. Musall
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive subtype of breast cancer which lacks upregulated hormone receptors. Because of this, it is not vulnerable to clinically available targeted therapies. When treated with standard of care neoadjuvant systemic therapy (NAST), TNBC only shows approximately a 40% rate of pathologic complete response (pCR). A biomarker which could predict TNBC response to NAST early during treatment would be useful, as it would allow for non-responders to be triaged to alternative therapies and potentially allow for the treatment of responders to be de-escalated.
Quantitative Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) may be used to probe and …

The Importance Of Dna Repair Capacity To (And A Model To Predict) Cell Radiosensitivity To Ions, David B. Flint, David B. Flint
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Radiation therapy with ions has a number of advantages over conventional radiation therapy with photons, including favorable depth-dose distributions, greater relative biological effectiveness (RBE) and a lesser dependence on a number of biological factors known to affect radiosensitivity to photons, including DNA repair capacity. Thus, it is expected that an additional benefit of using ions is that they mitigate the great heterogeneities in treatment responses commonly observed in photon therapies.
However, by analyzing the cell survival of human cancer cell lines exposed to clinically relevant photon, proton, and carbon ion beams, we show there is not significantly less relative variability …
Advancement Of A 3d Computational Phantom And Its Age Scaling Methodologies For Retrospective Dose Reconstruction Studies, Aashish Gupta
Advancement Of A 3d Computational Phantom And Its Age Scaling Methodologies For Retrospective Dose Reconstruction Studies, Aashish Gupta
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
We have used a 3D age-scalable computational phantom for over two decades for retrospective dose reconstruction studies of childhood cancer survivors (CCS) treated with 2D historic radiotherapy (RT). However, our phantom and its age scaling functions (ASF) must be updated so that it can be used in studies that include survivors treated with contemporary RT. We aimed to implement our phantom and its age scaling functions in DICOM format and determine the feasibility of applying our ASFs to accurately scale the whole-body CT-based anatomies.
In the implementation study, we developed Python scripts that model the phantom and ASFs in a …
Scattering Of Two Particles In A One-Dimensional Lattice, Seth T. Rittenhouse, P. Giannakeas, Nirav P. Mehta
Scattering Of Two Particles In A One-Dimensional Lattice, Seth T. Rittenhouse, P. Giannakeas, Nirav P. Mehta
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Research
This study concerns the two-body scattering of particles in a one-dimensional periodic potential. A convenient ansatz allows for the separation of center-of-mass and relative motion, leading to a discrete Schrödinger equation in the relative motion that resembles a tight-binding model. A lattice Green's function is used to develop the Lippmann-Schwinger equation, and ultimately derive a multiband scattering Κ matrix which is described in detail in the two-band approximation. Two distinct scattering lengths are defined according to the limits of zero relative quasimomentum at the top and bottom edges of the two-body collision band. Scattering resonances occur in the collision band …
Study Of Weakly Bound Cluster Anions Using Self Interaction Corrected Density Functional Scheme, Peter Obinna Ufondu
Study Of Weakly Bound Cluster Anions Using Self Interaction Corrected Density Functional Scheme, Peter Obinna Ufondu
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The Kohn–Sham formulation of density functional theory (DFT) is a widely used quantum mechanical theory to study chemical and materials properties. The practical application of DFT requires an approximation to the exchange–correlation (XC) functional. These approximations suffer from self-interaction errors due to the incomplete cancellation of the self-Coulomb energy with the approximate self-exchange and correlation energy for one-electron densities. Systems with weakly-bound electrons impose great challenges to semi-local density functional approximations. We use recently developed local scaled self-interaction correction (LSIC) by Zope et al and the Perdew-Zunger SIC method using the Fermi-Löwdin orbitals to calculate the vertical detachment energies (VDEs) …

On-Chip Terahertz Time-Domain Spectroscopy, Randy Sterbentz
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) allows the direct measurement of optical and charge carrier properties of materials in a region of the electromagnetic spectrum inaccessible to most other spectroscopic techniques. We have adapted the technique to an on-chip arrangement that allows us to measure these properties in nanoscale materials with dimensions below the diffraction limit. In this thesis, we present the operation of instruments and the mechanics behind performing on-chip terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. Three materials were tested to confirm the capabilities of our system to measure THz radiation: indium selenide (InSe), radiation-damaged silicon-on-sapphire (RD-SOS), and an erbium arsenide:gallium arsenide superlattice. Characterization Of Lamellar Liquid Crystal Emulsifiers In Topical Creams Containing A Novel Solvent, Melinda Joanna Sutton
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Diethylene glycol monoethyl ether (DEGEE) is a promising solvent component in topical cream formulations due to its superior solubilizing abilities with certain active pharmaceutical ingredients. One of the goals of this study is to characterize the effects of pH on the physical and chemical stabilities of topical cream formulations containing particularly high concentrations of DEGEE by characterizing a full topical pH profile of 3.5 – 9.0. The second goal is to evaluate the presence, amount, and characteristics of lyotropic liquid crystals (LLCs), molecularly structured in a lamellar phase, in a model cream emulsion utilizing polarized light microscopy (PLM). The presence …
Voltage-Controlled Magnetization In Chromia-Based Magnetic Heterostructures, William Echtenkamp
Voltage-Controlled Magnetization In Chromia-Based Magnetic Heterostructures, William Echtenkamp
Department of Physics and Astronomy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Spintronics promises a new generation of low-power, high-speed, non-volatile memory and logic devices. Heterostructures based on magnetoelectric chromia enable the direct manipulation of magnetization by applied electric fields and emerged as a promising building block for spintronic devices. In this dissertation, several interesting emergent magnetic properties arising in these device-enabling building blocks are examined. In some cases, exchange coupling at the interface between the magnetoelectric antiferromagnet and an adjacent ferromagnet stabilizes the interfacial antiferromagnetic domain state against the electrically induced rotation of the bulk spin structure. Upon magnetically cycling the ferromagnet, the magnetoelectric antiferromagnet relaxes towards a commensurate spin structure …

Manipulation Of Spin Crossover Phenomenon In An Fe(Ii) Molecular Complex And Application To Molecular Spintronics, Guanhua Hao
Department of Physics and Astronomy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Molecules with a large local magnetic moment have attracted considerable attention for application in spintronic devices. One candidate of a suitable device goes to the spin crossover molecule, where these 3d transition metal compounds are able to exhibit a robust spin state transition between distinct states. By proper design, the spintronic devices fabricated via spin crossover molecular thin films could achieve novel functionality while retaining flexibility and other traits based on its “organic” nature.
Controlling the spin state transition is a key factor of these possibilities. This thesis work investigates the manipulation of the spin state transition in [Fe{H …
