Effects Of Vacancies And Electron Temperature On The Electron Phonon Coupling In Cubic Silicon Carbide And Their Connection To The Inelastic Thermal Spike, Salah Al-Smairat
Effects Of Vacancies And Electron Temperature On The Electron Phonon Coupling In Cubic Silicon Carbide And Their Connection To The Inelastic Thermal Spike, Salah Al-Smairat
Doctoral Dissertations
“The electron-phonon interaction is an important interaction in many solids as it influences transport phenomena and related quantities such as the electrical and thermal conductivities, especially in nuclear and space applications. The importance of the electron-phonon interaction in primary damage production in 3C-SiC is the subject of this research.
The electron-phonon coupling factor was calculated using a hybrid Density Functional Perturbation Theory - Classical Electron Gas model. The coupling factor was calculated as a function of electron temperature in pristine and defective 3C-SiC, and relaxed defective cells. The electron-phonon coupling is found to depend strongly on the electronic temperature and …
Disorder Effects In Frustrated Magnets And Absorbing State Transitions, Xuecheng Ye
Disorder Effects In Frustrated Magnets And Absorbing State Transitions, Xuecheng Ye
Doctoral Dissertations
"Correlation, topology, and disorder can fundamentally affect the properties of interacting many-particle systems. After a short introduction which covers the basic concepts of phase transitions and scaling as well as the physics of Josephson junctions, the dissertation focuses on three separate projects.
The first project is motivated by the stripe and nematic phases observed e.g. in cuprate superconductors and iron pnictides. To understand the effects of disorder on such phases, we have investigated the behavior of the diluted J1-J2 Ising model. Spinless impurities generate a random-field disorder for the spin-density (stripe) order parameter, which destroys the stripe …

Irradiance Source For Exoplanet Atmospheric Spectra, Savannah Lyons
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The quantity and diversity of the known exoplanets have grown in recent years. This has brought about a need for more efficient methods of narrowing down the list to those exoplanets most likely to sustain life. The Atmosphere in a Test Tube project, which began at the University of Padova, Italy, is accomplishing this in a laboratory setting through examination of exoplanet atmospheric responses to photosynthetic bacteria under simulations of the irradiance conditions of a planet’s host star. The goal of this project was to design and construct a second-generation apparatus at Eastern Michigan University. The team focused on an …
Measuring The Diphoton Production From Higgs Boson Decays And In Association With Heavy Flavor Jets, Brianna Lynn Dwyer
Measuring The Diphoton Production From Higgs Boson Decays And In Association With Heavy Flavor Jets, Brianna Lynn Dwyer
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
In this dissertation, two important measurements are presented related to diphoton production, the differential cross-section measurement of the Higgs boson in the diphoton decay channel as well as a measurement on inclusive diphoton production with associated heavy-flavor jets. Selections between the two analyses are complimentary, making them a natural pairing in the context of this dissertation. The cross-section measurement is performed in a fiducial region of phase space to closely matches experimental selections. This allows for a largely model-independent measurement, providing a meticulous test of the Standard Model as well as other theoretical predictions. The production of diphoton + heavy-flavor …
An Upgraded Photoinjector For The Argonne Wakefield Accelerator, Emily Frame
An Upgraded Photoinjector For The Argonne Wakefield Accelerator, Emily Frame
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
The Argonne Wakefield Accelerator (AWA) is planning an upgrade of the drive-beam accelerator’s photoinjector, the driving force of electron generation. The upgrade’s main goal is to improve beam brightness using linear accelerating cavities and a radiofrequency-gun cavity. In the process of this upgrade, one of the beam focusing solenoids is being redesigned. A beam dynamics optimization is performed for two new solenoid designs, with considerations for producing low-charge (∼ 1 nC) electron bunches as well as operations at higher charges (∼ 50 nC). This project focuses on the optimization study for both the low- and high-charge regimes, exploring the impact …

Computational Single-Cell Analysis Of Confocal Fluorescence Images With Dapi-Generated Masks, Munirah Alduhailan
Wayne State University Theses
Lipolysis is a metabolic pathway in which free fatty acids are mobilized from stored triglycerides. The rate-limiting enzyme in this process is adipose triglyceride lipase, which is regulated by α/β-hydrolase domain-containing protein 5 (ABHD5) via both natural and synthetic pathways. With advanced artificial neural networks, image processing methods can extract quantitative results from fluorescence images. The segmentation of complex biological images, in which regions of the image are labeled as distinct masks, is the first step in image analysis. Ilastik, a machine-learning software, performs image segmentation with a user-trained neural network and custom key feature labels. The software’s results are …

Identification And Dosimetry Of Irradiated Pistachio (Pistacia Vera L.) Using Epr, Elsayed Salama, Ahmed M. Maghrabya, Samy A. Anwar, M. El-Sayed
Basic Science Engineering
In the current study, the EPR signal of both gamma-irradiated shell and kernel of the pistachio is recorded and investigated. The spectrum properties, microwave power dependency of signal intensities, short- and long-term temporal dependencies, and other significant factors are studied. This investigation was done on how varying radiation doses (0–10 kGy) affected the reactions of pistachio shells and kernels. The time dependence of the radiation-induced signal intensity of pistachio showed that the maximum intensity reached about 98.75% and 67% of its original value for shells and kernels, respectively, after the first six hours. These results indicate that EPR is an …

Realizing van der Waals (vdW) epitaxy in the 1980s represents a breakthrough that circumvents the stringent lattice matching and processing compatibility requirements in conventional covalent heteroepitaxy. However, due to the weak vdW interactions, there is little control over film qualities by the substrate. Typically, discrete domains with a spread of misorientation angles are formed, limiting the applicability of vdW epitaxy. Here, the epitaxial growth of monocrystalline, covalent Cr5Te8 2D crystals on monolayer vdW WSe2 by chemical vapor deposition is reported, driven by interfacial dative bond formation. The lattice of Cr5Te8, with a lateral dimension of a few tens of micrometers, …

Persistent photoresponses require optical excitations to metastable states, which are rare of ionic origin due to the indirect photon-ion interaction. In this work, we explore the photoinduced metastable proton states in the proton-transfer type molecular ferroelectric croconic acid. We observe that, after the photoexcitation, the changes of structural and ferroelectric properties relax in ∼10^3s, indicating persistent photoresponses of ionic origin. In contrast, the photoconductivity relaxes within 1 s. The 10^3s timescale suggests that the ionic metastable states result from proton transfer both along and out of the hydrogen bonds. This discovery unveils an ionic mechanism for the phototunability, which offers …

In this paper we present an experimental study of edge turbulence in the Large Plasma Device at UCLA. We utilize a scan of discharge power and prefill pressure (neutral density) to show experimentally that turbulent density fluctuations decrease with decreasing density gradient, as predicted for resistive drift-wave turbulence (RDWT). As expected for RDWT, we observe that the cross-phase between the density and potential fluctuations is close to 0. Moreover, the addition of an electron temperature gradient leads to a reduction in the amplitude of the density fluctuations, as expected for RDWT. However, counter to theoretical expectations, we find that the …

Antiferromagnetically (AFM) coupled skyrmions offer potential advantages for spintronic devices, including reduced dipolar fields that may enable smaller skyrmion sizes and a reduction of the skyrmion Hall effect. However, the topological stability of AFM-coupled skyrmions subjected to dramatic spin deformation through low-temperature cycling has not been investigated. Here we report the discovery of a topological spin memory effect for AFM-coupled skyrmion pairs in [Co/Gd/Pt]10 multilayered films. Photoemission electron microscopy imaging shows that bubble skyrmions in the multilayer that are stable at room temperature evolve into complex in-plane spin textures as the temperature is lowered and reform completely when the sample …

We report on the formation of Néel-type magnetic bubble skyrmions at room temperature in [Pt/Co/Ir]3 multilayered thin films after an in-plane magnetic field treatment. Polar magneto-optical Kerr Effect (p-MOKE) microscopy images show that the dendritic magnetic configurations observed after AC demagnetization evolve into magnetic bubble skyrmions after the application and subsequent removal of an in-plane magnetic field. Micromagnetic simulations were used to systematically investigate the role of the in-plane magnetic field magnitude, misalignment of the sample, and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMI) in generating bubble skyrmions during the field treatment. The simulations show that in-plane fields slightly below the saturation field …

The fluid Taylor scale is measured in the Bryn Mawr Experiment (BMX) of the Bryn Mawr Plasma Laboratory and examined as a potential dissipation scale of magnetic turbulence within the plasma. We present the first laboratory measurements of the Taylor scale of a turbulent magnetized plasma through multi-point correlations of broadband magnetic fluctuations. From spatial and temporal correlations, respectively, the measured Taylor scales are 261 and 361 cm. These measurements are on the same order of magnitude as estimated ion dissipation scales within the BMX plasma with ion inertial scales between 1 and 10 cm and ion gyroscales between 0:1 …
X Ray Phase And Coherent Scatter Imaging Measurements, Pikting Cheung
X Ray Phase And Coherent Scatter Imaging Measurements, Pikting Cheung
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Traditional x-ray images are good for distinguishing between materials with very different absorption coefficients. However, detecting breast cancer using conventional x-ray imaging is hard because cancer tissue has similar absorption coefficients as normal tissue. Annually 43,600 women will die from breast cancer. The odds of survival are better if the cancer is diagnosed at an early stage, but mammography tends to have high rates of missed cancers. Mammography also tends to have a high false-positive rate, which leads to unnecessary biopsies. Two techniques with potential to add additional information to breast imaging have been investigated. X-ray phase imaging has been …

X Ray Phase And Coherent Scatter Imaging Measurements, Mahboob Ur Rehman
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
In conventional radiography, anatomical information of the patients can be obtained, distinguishing different tissue types, e.g. bone and soft tissue. However, it is difficult to obtain appreciable contrast between two different types of soft tissues. Instead, coherent x-ray scattering can be utilized to obtain images which can differentiate between normal and cancerous cells of breast. An x-ray system using a conventional source and simple slot apertures was tested. Materials with scatter signatures that mimic breast cancer were buried in layers of fat of increasing thickness and imaged. The result showed that the contrast and signal to noise ratio (SNR) remained …

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This thesis presents the application of Raman spectroscopy, digital holographic microscope (DHM) and transport intensity equation (TIE) in imaging biological samples. Raman spectroscopy is a non-destructive technique that can provide chemical structure, concentration, temperature, and molecular interactions. On the other hand, DHM and TIE provide physical measurements such as height, width, area and volume. We applied Raman spectroscopy to study iron-bound transferrin (Tf) in intact human breast cancer cells. Iron is an essential element required for human life and is highly regulated in the body. As the exact mechanisms of iron-bound Tf in cells are not well known, we developed a …

System Measurements For X-Ray Phase And Diffraction Imaging, Erik Wolfgang Tripi
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
In medical imaging, X rays are used to look inside the body to find fractures in bones, abnormal masses, cavities in teeth, and so on. What makes X rays so good at looking at these types of structures is the X ray’s penetration power. When imaging soft tissue to search for tumors, X-ray images tend to have difficulty performing well. The reason for this is that the background structures, such as fat or fibro glandular tissue have similar absorption coefficients as the tumor. Mammography tends to have a high false positive rate and can miss tumors entirely as well. There …

Design And Analysis Of Marangoni-Driven Robotic Surfers, Mitchel L. Timm
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
We designed and experimentally studied the dynamics of two robotic systems that surf along the water-air interface. The robots were self-propelled by means of creating and maintaining a surface tension gradient resulting from an asymmetric release of isopropyl alcohol (IPA). The imbalance in the distribution of surface tension surrounding the robots generates a propulsive force commonly referred to as Marangoni propulsion. First, we considered a single surfer, which was custom-made with novel control mechanisms that allow for both forward motion and steering to be remotely adjusted solely through the manipulation of local surface stresses. We analyzed the performance of this …

Data-Driven Methods For Low-Energy Nuclear Theory, Jordan M.R. Fox
CGU Theses & Dissertations
The term data-driven describes computational methods for numerical problem solvingwhich have been developed by the field of data science; these are at the intersection of computer science, mathematics, and statistics. When applied to a domain science like nuclear physics, especially with the goalof deepening scientific insight, data-driven methods form a core pillar of the computational science endeavor. In this dissertation I explore two problems related to theoretical nuclear physics: one in the framework of numerical statistics, and the other in the framework of machine learning. I) Historically our understanding of the structure of the atomic nucleus, the quantum many-body problem, has been …
Non-Perturbative Processes In Standard Model \& New Physics: From Standard Calculations To Machine Learning, Cody Michael Grant
Non-Perturbative Processes In Standard Model \& New Physics: From Standard Calculations To Machine Learning, Cody Michael Grant
Wayne State University Dissertations
I calculated non-perturbative processes to study the Standard Model and probe areas of new physics. I found that invisible decays of heavy mesons are not dominated by the leading order contribution in the Standard Model. I argue that this affects neutrino mass constraints and avenues for discovering new physics, such as dark photons. In addition to this, I used a novel approach to approximate a semileptonic form factor with an artificial neural network (ANN). Comparing the results from the ANN to common phenomenological parameterizations, and using it to set a lower bound constraint on the CKM matrix element, $V_{cd}$. Finally, …

Methods And Characterization Of Topological And Disordered-Induced Protection Of Coherence In Quantum Systems, Sayandip Dhara
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Quantum computers can efficiently simulate natural processes and solve certain types of mathematical problems. Two of the key issues preventing the development of platforms to realize a scalable quantum machine are the decoherence of the qubits due to the interaction with the environment and the existence of a large overhead to correct errors. Although there already exist noisy intermediate-scale quantum machines, we still need to improve much to be able to solve problems faster than the already existing classical computers. In this dissertation, we explore two approaches to tackle both issues. We propose a scheme where, using quasi-Majorana zero modes …

We report a microfluidic droplet generator which can produce single and compound droplets using a 3D axisymmetric co-flow structure. The design considered for the fabrication of the device integrated a user-friendly and cost-effective 3D printing process. To verify the performance of the device, single and compound emulsions of deionized water and mineral oil were generated and their features such as size, generation frequency, and emulsion structures were successfully characterized. In addition, the generation of bio emulsions such as alginate and collagen aqueous droplets in mineral oil was demonstrated in this study. Overall, the monolithic 3D printed axisymmetric droplet generator could …

Infrared aerosol spectra derived from Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment measurements following the June 2019 Raikoke volcanic eruption are used to evaluate the composition of stratospheric aerosols in the Arctic. A blanket of aerosols, spanning an altitude range from the tropopause (8–11 km) to 20 km, persisted in the stratosphere over northern latitudes for many months. The aerosols within this blanket were almost exclusively sulfates. The percentage of sulfuric acid in the aerosols decreased over time, dropping below 50% H2SO4 concentration at some altitudes by March 2020. Contrary to previous reports, the aerosol blanket was not comprised of smoke …

During the closure of K-12 schools and universities thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, many educators turned to web conferencing tools such as Zoom and WebEx to deliver online lectures. For courses with labs, some teachers provide recorded videos of real labs. Watching recorded lab videos is a passive experience, as the procedures and point of view are fixed, and students do not have any control of the lab and thus miss the opportunity to explore different options, including making mistakes that is important part of the learning process. One approach that holds great potential to enhance laboratory experience for online …

The longitudinal and transverse emittance growth in hadron beams due to intra-beam scattering (IBS) and other heating sources deteriorate the luminosity in a collider. Hence, a strong hadron beam cooling is required to reduce and preserve the emittance. The cooling of high energy hadron beam is challenging. We propose a dual energy storage ring-based electron cooler that uses an electron beam to extract heat away from hadron beam in the cooler ring while the electron beam is cooled by synchrotron radiation damping in the high energy damping ring. In this paper, we present a design of a dual energy storage …

Centrality And Transverse-Momentum Dependence Of Higher-Order Flow Harmonics Of Identified Hadrons In Au+Au Collisions At √𝑠𝑁𝑁=200 Gev, Star Collaboration
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications
We present high-precision measurements of elliptic, triangular, and quadrangular flow 𝑣2, 𝑣3, and 𝑣4, respectively, at midrapidity for identified hadrons 𝜋, 𝑝, 𝐾, 𝜑, 𝐾𝑠, Λ as a function of centrality and transverse momentum in Au+Au collisions at the center-of-mass energy √𝑠𝑁𝑁=200 GeV. We observe similar 𝑣𝑛 trends between light and strange mesons which indicates that the heavier strange quarks flow as strongly as the lighter up and down quarks. The number-of-constituent-quark scaling for 𝑣2, 𝑣3, and 𝑣4 is found to hold within statistical uncertainty for 0–10%, 10–40%, and 40–80% collision centrality intervals. The results are compared to several viscous …

The STAR Collaboration reports measurements of the transverse single-spin asymmetries, 𝐴𝑁, for inclusive jets and identified “hadrons within jets” production at midrapidity from transversely polarized 𝑝𝑝 collisions at √𝑠 =200 GeV, based on data recorded in 2012 and 2015. The inclusive jet asymmetry measurements include 𝐴𝑁 for inclusive jets and 𝐴𝑁 for jets containing a charged pion carrying a momentum fraction 𝑧 >0.3 of the jet momentum. The identified hadron within jet asymmetry measurements include the Collins effect for charged pions, kaons, and protons, and the Collins-like effect for charged pions. The measured asymmetries are determined for several distinct kinematic …
