Examining The Optical Properties Of Monosodium Urate For The Detection Of Gout Using A Magneto-Optical Device (Mod), Victoria Marino
Examining The Optical Properties Of Monosodium Urate For The Detection Of Gout Using A Magneto-Optical Device (Mod), Victoria Marino
Senior Honors Projects
Currently, there is a need for a cost-effective and more efficient option for gout diagnosis. Traditionally, gout is diagnosed by the presence of monosodium urate in blood or synovial fluid. The purpose of this research is to quantify the magneto-optical properties of monosodium urate crystals using a magneto-optical device (MOD). Characterization of these magnetic and optical properties is achieved through measuring the initial light intensity and the transmitted light intensity of a laser shone through a sample of monosodium urate with or without a static magnetic field. The comparison of the transmitted intensity through a solution of MSU crystals with …

3-D Printed Arduino Powered Drone, Michael Floccare
Senior Honors Projects
With the 3D technology available today creating something in a lab has never been easier. Using 3D printers, the body of a drone is created and printed using a combination of programs. With a body created using PLA filament the drone is durable and light weight. The drone’s flight system and controller are programmed with the built-in software from Arduino. Adding the Arduino nano to the drone body then gives the drone capabilities to fly.
The Meaning Of Dark, Light And Shadows: Inferences In Art, Materiality And Cultural Practices, Frank Prendergast
The Meaning Of Dark, Light And Shadows: Inferences In Art, Materiality And Cultural Practices, Frank Prendergast
Book/Book Chapter
Our visual awareness relies on light acting on the eye to perceive materiality and colour. Medieval thought wrestled to articulate and comprehend its nature. The notebooks of Leonardo Da Vinci, for example, included his descriptions to define light and make comparisons so as to differentiate between light and shadow. His focus was on the illumination of surfaces from the perspective of a painter, seeing shadows as ‘the diminution of light by the intervention of an opaque body’ and ‘the counterpart of luminous rays’. In his mind, a shadow ‘stood between light and darkness’, with darkness being ‘the absence of light’. …

Impact Of Proton And Neutron Irradiation On Carrier Transport Properties In Ga2o3, Andrew C. Silverman
Impact Of Proton And Neutron Irradiation On Carrier Transport Properties In Ga2o3, Andrew C. Silverman
Honors Undergraduate Theses
This project studies the properties of minority charge carriers in beta gallium oxide (β -Ga2O3). The behavior of minority carriers is of high importance as it greatly affects conduction and consequently device performance. Cathodoluminescence (CL) spectroscopy and EBIC (Electron Beam Induced Current) are the main experimental techniques used to study minority carrier behavior.
High energy radiation affects minority carrier properties through damage to the material and through the production of carrier traps that reduce the conductivity and mobility of the material. In this investigation, we study the effects of various kinds of high energy radiation on …

A goal of introductory physics for life sciences (IPLS) curricula is to prepare students to effectively use physical models and quantitative reasoning in biological and medical settings. To assess whether this goal is being met, we conducted a longitudinal study of the impact of IPLS on student work in later biology and chemistry courses. We report here on one part of that study, a comparison of written responses by students with different physics backgrounds on a diffusion task administered in a senior biology capstone course. We observed differences in student reasoning that were found to be associated with prior or …
Development Of Scent Detection And Categorization Algorithm Using Gas Chromatography And Machine Learning, Alex Driehaus
Development Of Scent Detection And Categorization Algorithm Using Gas Chromatography And Machine Learning, Alex Driehaus
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
There are many looking to connect human senses to quantifiable data. Scents are categorized by their descriptions into scent families. These include citrus, floral, and woody. Similar descriptors designate similar families, while different descriptors correlate with different families. Dravnieks compiled an Atlas of chemical descriptors [1]. Such descriptors are cinnamon, fruity, and cadaverous. By analyzing the applicability of these descriptors, the chemicals will be sorted into their scent families.
Gas chromatography generates sample-specific signals of voltage over time. Chromatograms of known scents will serve as a basis for a convolutional neural network. This algorithm will be trained on these signals …

We present Hubble Space Telescope Cosmic Origin Spectrograph (COS) UV line spectroscopy and integral-field unit (IFU) observations of the intragroup medium in Stephan's Quintet (SQ). SQ hosts a 30 kpc long shocked ridge triggered by a galaxy collision at a relative velocity of 1000 km s-1, where large amounts of molecular gas coexist with a hot, X-ray-emitting, plasma. COS spectroscopy at five positions sampling the diverse environments of the SQ intragroup medium reveals very broad (≈2000 km s-1) Lyα line emission with complex line shapes. The Lyα line profiles are similar to or much broader than those of Hβ, [C …

Lepton Flavor Violation And Effective Field Theories, Renae Conlin
Lepton Flavor Violation And Effective Field Theories, Renae Conlin
Wayne State University Dissertations
The Standard Model is believed to be a low energy effective theory of some completetheory at higher energies. This is already evidenced in the observation of neutrino oscillations. Standard Model processes conserve the lepton flavor quantum numbers. Adding massive neutrinos to the Standard Model, the branching ratios of lepton flavor violating processes are found to be incredibly small. For example, a process μ → eγ has a branching ratio order ∼ 10^−54. These tiny branching ratios of lepton flavor violating processes indicate that they are especially clean areas to look for beyond the Standard Model physics. Any observed flavor violation …
Photophysics Of Metalloporphyrins Strongly Coupled To Cavity Photons, Aleksandr Avramenko
Photophysics Of Metalloporphyrins Strongly Coupled To Cavity Photons, Aleksandr Avramenko
Wayne State University Dissertations
This dissertation will discuss the photophysics of metalloporphyrins, mainly CuTPP, ZnTPP, and H2TPP under strong light-matter coupling conditions. Strong light-matter coupling was achieved by embedding the previously mentioned chromophores into a spun coated PMMA polymer coating which is then incorporated as a spacer layer in a FabryPérot nano-cavity. The cavity thickness is chosen so that the cavity photon is of similar energy as the B, or Soret transition (2nd excited state) of the porphyrin molecule. The exchange of energy between the cavity photon and the molecular mode leads to the formation of polariton states.
Increasing the concentration of the molecules …
The Effect Of Interfacial Morphology On The Magnetic And Magnetocaloricproperties Of Ferromagnetic Nanoparticles With Core-Shell Geometry: A Montecarlo Study, Yusuf Yüksel
Turkish Journal of Physics
Within the framework of Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate the magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of a nanocomposite particle composed of ferromagnetic core and shell layers. We found that isothermal magnetic entropy change may exhibit two peaks associated to two different phase transitions of the core and shell layers. We paid particular attention to the microscopic details of the core/shell interface. Our results suggest that for the large values of the interface exchange coupling, the full width at half maximum is expanded at the expense of the low temperature peak of isothermal entropy change $ \Delta S_{M} $ whereas the high …

Scattering Of Kinks In Noncanonical Sine-Gordon Model, Ishmael Takyi, Benedict Barnes, Hoese Michel Tornyeviadzi, Joseph Ackora-Prah
Turkish Journal of Physics
In this paper, we numerically study the scattering of kinks in the noncanonical sine-Gordon model using Fourier spectral methods. The model depends on two free parameters, which control the localized inner structure in the energy density and the characteristics of the scattering potential. It has been conjectured that the kink solutions in the noncanonical model possess inner structures in their energy density, and the presence of these yields bound states and resonance structures for some relative velocities between the kink and the antikink. In the numerical study, we observed that the classical kink mass decreases monotonically as the free parameters …

Properties Of Doubly Heavy Baryons In Qcd, Takhmasib Aliyev, Selçuk Bi̇lmi̇ş
Turkish Journal of Physics
The study of the properties of doubly heavy baryons represents a promising area in particle physics. It can provide us with information about Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix elements and the low energy dynamics of QCD. They have a very rich phenomenology. The investigation of weak, electromagnetic, and strong decays has a vital importance for understanding the dynamics of doubly heavy baryons. The main ingredients of such studies are the spectroscopic parameters, the strong coupling constants, and the transition form factors. For calculations of these quantities, non-perturbative methods are needed. One of these methods is the QCD sum rules. In the present …

Investigating The Impacts Of Microgravity On Methanotrophic Bacteria Metabolism For Methane Gas Oxidation, Daisy Li, Elena Zhu, Stella Ristic '25, Joshua Suarez
Distinguished Student Work
An abundance of waste methane gas is produced on the International Space Station (ISS) as a result of the Sabatier Reaction, a part of the Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS). In order to manage this organic waste, this experiment seeks to understand how microgravity impacts the methane-oxidizing metabolism of methanotrophic bacteria, namely Methylorubrum podarium. As methanotrophs have never been studied in space, this investigation may unlock a novel understanding of their behavior in microgravity, leading to promising future applications such as improved life support systems in deep space. In this experiment, cameras will capture snapshots of the bacterial …

Study Of The Decay B^± → K^0_S Π^± Π^0 At The Belle Experiment, Suravinda Janaka Kumara Kospalage
Wayne State University Dissertations
Belle is a particle physics experiment based at the KEK laboratory in Tsukuba Japanwhich ran from 1999 to 2010 and collected 1ab−1 of data. The Belle experiment is focused on studying the properties of particles called B mesons which are produced by accelerating and colliding electron and positron beams. These B mesons show the biggest differences between the properties of matter and anti-matter of any known particles. One of the main goals of the Belle experiments is to understand the differences between matter and anti-matter, specifically violations of charge-parity symmetry (CP violation) and how anti-matter vanished and we come to …

Can Physics Attain Its Goals: Extending D'Agostino's Analysis To 21st Century And Beyond, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In his 2000 seminal book, Silvo D'Agostino provided the detailed overview of the history of ideas underlying 19th and 20th century physics. Now that we are two decades into the 21st century, a natural question is: how can we extend his analysis to the 21st century physics -- and, if possible, beyond, to try to predict how physics will change? To perform this analysis, we go beyond an analysis of what happened and focus more on why para-digm changes happened in the history of physics. To better understand these paradigm changes, we analyze now only what were the main ideas …

Study Of Zyomogen Granule Movement Along Actin Filaments Using A Single Beam Optical Trap, Justin James Raupp
Wayne State University Dissertations
Zymogen granules are enzymatic vesicles in the pancreas. The surface of these zymogen granules (ZGs) has several different kinds of myosin molecules, such as myosin 1c, 6, 5c, and 7b. These molecular motors may contribute to ZG transportation in cells. To understand the molecular motors involved in the vesicle trafficking, we observed the in vitro motility of purified ZGs from rat pancreas and examined the stepping behavior and force that is generated using a single beam optical trap. To be involved in trafficking, molecular motors have certain characteristics, a high duty ratio and the ability to move continuously along actin …

Correlations And Dynamic Fluctuations In High Energy Collisions, Zoulfekar Mazloum
Wayne State University Dissertations
Is thermalization necessary for hydrodynamic flow in nuclear collisions? The discovery of flow-like azimuthal correlations in pA and high-multiplicity pp collisions raises profound questions about the onset of collective flow and its relation to hydrodynamics. We seek independent experimental information on the degree of thermalization in order to identify those hydrodynamic collision systems in which flow is sensitive to equilibrium QCD properties. We aim to develop a protocol for identifying the degree of thermalization using a combination of momentum and multiplicity correlation. To study the effect ofthermalization on these correlations, we use Boltzmann equation in the relaxation time approximation with …

Electronic And Optoelectronic Properties Of Two-Dimensional Heterostructures For Next-Generation Device Technologies, Jesse Thompson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Since monolayer graphene was isolated in 2004, there has been significant interest in integrating layered materials into innovative device designs and hybrid materials to help solve pressing technological challenges. This is partially because they can typically be thinned to a two-dimensional (2D) form without suffering from roughness-induced scattering and can exhibit thickness-dependent variations in properties such as their energy band gap. This dissertation reports on investigations of electronic and optoelectronic device physics in 2D material heterostructures. The investigation of electronic device physics focuses on the interface between 2D molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and gold (Au), which behaves as a resistive switching …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Recent burgeoning machine learning has revolutionized our ways of looking at the world. Being extraordinarily good at pattern recognition, machine learning has been widely applied to many fields to solve challenging problems. This dissertation demonstrates the applications of machine learning on scanning-free fiber-optic imaging systems (FOISs), and on the design of anti-resonant fibers. In the first part, we propose a semi-supervised learning framework called the adaptive inverse mapping (AIP) to stabilize the imaging performance through multimode fibers (MMFs). We show that if the state of the MMF is traced closely, the output images can be used as probes to correct …

Observation Of Anisotropic Properties In Topological Quantum Materials, Gyanendra Dhakal
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
The discovery of the three-dimensional topological insulator (TI) has enormously impacted our understanding of quantum materials. These novel materials are characterized by the topology rather than some order parameters. The TIs are the materials that exhibit insulating properties in the bulk while possessing the metallic state on the surface. These surface states are protected by time-reversal symmetry; as a result, the electrons featuring surface states are spin-polarized. After the discovery of TIs, other topological semimetallic (TSM) states were discovered, which enhanced the understanding and widened the reach of topological materials. Discoveries of various topological phases such as Dirac, Weyl, nodal …
