Soft Magnetic Composite Substrates For Rf/Microwave Applications, Poonam Lathiya
Soft Magnetic Composite Substrates For Rf/Microwave Applications, Poonam Lathiya
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Novel soft magnetic ferrite materials will play a crucial role in next-generation over one trillion sensors (also known as “trillion sensor economy) related to 5G communications and internet of things, as these materials can achieve improved wireless power and signal transfer efficiency with high operation frequency. In this work, Ni-Cu-Zn and Ni-Co-Zn ferrites with high permeability, high permittivity, and low magnetic and dielectric losses were prepared for RF and microwave device applications. Frequency dispersion of RF complex permeability of Ni-Cu-Zn ferrites prepared under different applied hydraulic pressures and durations have been thoroughly investigated. The Ni0.35Cu0.19Zn0.46Fe2O4 ferrites were prepared by conventional …
Finding Signal In The Noise: High-Fidelity, Quantitative, Optical Blood Perfusion Imaging With Interference, Abdul Mohaimen Safi
Finding Signal In The Noise: High-Fidelity, Quantitative, Optical Blood Perfusion Imaging With Interference, Abdul Mohaimen Safi
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
For label-free, non-invasive, wide field-of-view (FOV) imaging/monitoring of blood flow, speckle-based approaches are gaining popularity. However, to obtain quantitative flow information, speckle techniques rely on the multi-exposure scheme which requires complex, bulky, and expensive instrumentation, limiting its application to preclinical studies. This dissertation directly addresses these issues. In the first part of this dissertation, we report a novel single shot synthetic multi-exposure speckle imaging (syMESI) method to synthetically produce multi-exposure images from one short single exposure speckle image using spatial binning/averaging. We demonstrate that syMESI can reimagine conventional hardware based MESI, with low-cost single exposure laser speckle imaging (LSCI) instrumentation. …
Light-Controlled Magnetism And Magnetic Sensing In Two-Dimensional Vanadium Dichalcogenides And Related Semiconductors, Valery Ortiz Jimenez
Light-Controlled Magnetism And Magnetic Sensing In Two-Dimensional Vanadium Dichalcogenides And Related Semiconductors, Valery Ortiz Jimenez
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) semiconductors hold enormous potential for modern optoelectronic devices, magnetic sensing, and quantum computing applications. By inducing long-range ferromagnetism (FM) in these semiconductors by stacking them with other magnetic TMDs or through the introduction of small amounts of a magnetic dopant, it is possible to extend their potential in emerging spintronic applications. In this dissertation, we aim to demonstrate two important applications of these materials: magnetic sensing and light-mediated, room temperature (RT) FM in V-doped WS2 (V-WS2) and V-WSe2 monolayers and in ML VSe2/TS2 (T = Mo and W) heterostructures. In this work, we developed …
Possible Studies On Generalized Parton Distributions And Gravitational Form Factors In Neutrino Reactions, Shunzo Kumano, Roberto Petti
Possible Studies On Generalized Parton Distributions And Gravitational Form Factors In Neutrino Reactions, Shunzo Kumano, Roberto Petti
Faculty Publications
Spacelike and timelike generalized parton distributions (GPDs) have been investigated in charged-lepton scattering and electron-positron collisions via deeply virtual Compton scattering and two-photon processes, respectively. Furthermore, we expect that hadron-accelerator-facility measurements will be performed in future. The GPDs will play a crucial role in clarifying the origins of hadron spins and masses in terms of quarks and gluons. It is also possible to probe internal pressure within hadrons for understanding their stability. Gravitational form factors of hadrons used to be considered as a purely academic subject because gravitational interactions are too weak to be measured in microscopic systems. However, due …

The basic operating principle of photovoltaic (PV) devices is the conversion of solar irradiation into electricity. There are various applications of this principle in many countries such as Egypt, Nigeria and Denmark. Most of the solar PV projects are designed for street lighting, water pumping and water desalination. However, we hope about wide range of using the appropriate components and best technical procedures, standard PV projects with maximum performance output. The present systems now provide 20% to 40% only of the community's heat or lightness on annual basic needs. These include innovative and alternative ways to reduce material uses and …

The smart grid and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies play vital roles in improving the quality of services offered in traditional electrical grid. They open a room for the introduction of new services like distribution automation (DA) that has a significant advantage to both utility companies and final consumers. DA integrates sensors, actuators, intelligent electrical devices (IED) and information and communication technologies to monitor and control electrical grid. However, the integration of these technologies poses security threats to the electrical grid like Denial of Service (DoS) attacks, false data injection attacks, and masquerading attacks like system node impersonation that can …

We report TeV gamma-ray observations of the ultra-high-energy source MGRO J1908+06 using data from the High Altitude Water Cherenkov Observatory. This source is one of the highest-energy known gamma-ray sources, with emission extending past 200 TeV. Modeling suggests that the bulk of the TeV gamma-ray emission is leptonic in nature, driven by the energetic radio-faint pulsar PSR J1907+0602. Depending on what assumptions are included in the model, a hadronic component may also be allowed. Using the results of the modeling, we discuss implications for detection prospects by multi-messenger campaigns.

We present a search for dark photon dark matter that could couple to gravitational-wave interferometers using data from Advanced LIGO and Virgo’s third observing run. To perform this analysis, we use two methods, one based on cross-correlation of the strain channels in the two nearly aligned LIGO detectors, and one that looks for excess power in the strain channels of the LIGO and Virgo detectors. The excess power method optimizes the Fourier transform coherence time as a function of frequency, to account for the expected signal width due to Doppler modulations. We do not find any evidence of dark photon …

Hadron-Quark Phase Transition At Finite Density In The Presence Of A Magnetic Field: Anisotropic Approach, Efrain J. Ferrer, Aric Hackebill
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications
We investigate the hadron-quark phase transition at finite density in the presence of a magnetic field taking into account the anisotropy created by a uniform magnetic field in the system’s equations of state. We find a new anisotropic equilibrium condition that will drive the first-order phase transition along the boundary between the two phases. Fixing the magnetic field in the hadronic phase, the phase transition is realized by increasing the baryonic chemical potential at zero-temperature. It is shown that the magnetic field is mildly boosted after the system transitions from the hadronic to the quark phase. The magnetic-field discontinuity between …

Atomically flat (111) interfaces between insulating perovskite oxides provide a landscape for new electronic phenomena. For example, the graphene-like coordination between interfacial metallic ion layer pairs can lead to topologically protected states [Xiao et al., Nat. Commun. 2, 596 (2011) and A. Rüegg and G. A. Fiete, Phys. Rev. B 84, 201103 (2011)]. The metallic ion/metal oxide bilayers that comprise the unit cell of the perovskite (111) heterostructures require the interface to be polar, generating an intrinsic polar discontinuity [Chakhalian et al., Nat. Mater. 11, 92 (2012)]. Here, we investigate epitaxial heterostructures of (111)-oriented LaAlO …

Living systems are composed of molecules that are synthesized by cells that use energy sources within their surroundings to create fascinating materials that have mechanical properties optimized for their biological function. Their functionality is a ubiquitous aspect of our lives. We use wood to construct furniture, bacterial colonies to modify the texture of dairy products and other foods, intestines as violin strings, bladders in bagpipes, and so on. The mechanical properties of these biological materials differ from those of other simpler synthetic elastomers, glasses, and crystals. Reproducing their mechanical properties synthetically or from first principles is still often unattainable. The …

First-Principles-Based Modeling Of Energy Converting Properties Of Conventional And Emerging Ferroelectrics, Maggie Kingsland
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Ferroelectric materials are a type of multifunctional material that exhibit spontaneous polarization reversable by the application of an electric field. They are used in many technologies such as ferroelectric RAM (FeRAM), piezoelectric devices, RFID chips, and capacitors. However, the most commonly used ferroelectrics are often made with rare, expensive elements and are not environmentally friendly. For example, many prototypical ferroelectrics contain elements such as lead, zirconium, and titanium. As technology grows more advanced, there is a need to discover or manufacture cheaper ferroelectrics and to make them less impactful on human health and the earth as a whole. We set …

Characterization Of High Mobility Channels For Use In Quantum Computing Devices, Payam Amin
Dissertations and Theses
Quantum computing promises computation that is fundamentally beyond the reach of classical computers. For the realization of a full-scale quantum computer, millions of quantum bits need to be fabricated on an integrated circuit and operated at cryogenic temperatures. Silicon and silicon-germanium based electron spin quantum bits have the advantage of leveraging decades of semiconductor industry knowledge for high volume manufacturability.
During the process development of any semiconductor device, material characterization is essential to understand and improve the process. Transmission electron microscopy is the only technique that could offer localized high spatial resolution characterization. In this work we have introduced two …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The research in two-dimensional (2D) materials has evolved from ``traditional" quantum wells based on group III-V and II-VI semiconductors to atomically thin sheets of van der Waals materials such as 2D semiconducting Transition Metal Dichalcogenides (TMDs). These 2D materials remain a stimulating field that continues to introduce new challenges. From both a fundamental physics and technological perspective, magneto-optical spectroscopy has been an essential tool in this research field. TMDs, for example, pose the challenge of characterizing their spin-valley-resolved physics and deriving implications in quantum computation and information research. With the discovery of valley Zeeman effects, the spin-valley physics of TMDs …

The last stage of cell division involves two daughter cells remaining interconnected by a cytokinetic bridge that is cleaved during abscission. Conserved between the zebrafish embryo and human cells, we found that the oldest centrosome moves in a Rab11-dependent manner towards the cytokinetic bridge sometimes followed by the youngest. Rab11-endosomes are organized in a Rab11-GTP dependent manner at the mother centriole during pre-abscission, with Rab11 endosomes at the oldest centrosome being more mobile compared with the youngest. The GTPase activity of Rab11 is necessary for the centrosome protein, Pericentrin, to be enriched at the centrosome. Reduction in Pericentrin expression or …

The one square kilometer array (KM2A), a sub-array of Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) experiment, consists of 5195 electromagnetic particle detectors (EDs) and 1188 muon detectors (MDs), has been built over three-quarters scale. Its main scientific goal is to search gamma-ray sources at energies above 100 TeV. Offline calibration method has been used to calibrate thousands of EDs to guarantee the key performances of the array such as angular resolution and pointing accuracy within 0.1° during long-term operation. The experimental results of the 3/4 array show that this method can be used to determine the detector time offset …

The Southern Wide-field Gamma-ray Observatory (SWGO) is the next-generation gamma-ray observatory, currently in an R&D phase. The experiment is expected to have a large array of water Cherenkov detectors (WCD) placed at a high elevation (> 4.4 km a.s.l.) in South America. Here we present a WCD concept with reduced surface area and height of stations comprising four PMTs at the bottom. We show that it is possible to reach an excellent gamma/hadron discrimination by analyzing the data gathered by this station with machine learning techniques. Such performance can be achieved by analyzing the shower patterns at the ground or …

Background showers triggered by hadrons represent over 99.9% of all particles arriving at ground-based gamma-ray observatories. An important stage in the data analysis of these observatories, therefore, is the removal of hadron-triggered showers. Currently, the High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) gamma-ray observatory employs an algorithm based on a single cut in two variables, unlike other ground-based gamma-ray observatories (e.g. H.E.S.S., VERITAS), which employ a large number of variables to separate the primary particles. In this work, we explore machine learning techniques (Boosted Decision Trees and Neural Networks) to identify the primary particles detected by HAWC. Our new gamma/hadron separation techniques were …

The atmospheric quality plays an important role in the air shower observation by the Wide Field-of-view Cherenkov Telescope Array (WFCTA) of LHAASO. A YAG imaging lidar system was developed to continuously monitor the calorimetric information. The accuracy of atmospheric monitoring is dependent on the pulse energy, the YAG lasers beam parameters and the angular repeatability of a High-precision 3D lifting Rotating Platform (HiRoP). Therefore, we designed an optical system for this lidar with a beam splitter to divide the laser beam into a reference beam and a calibrating beam with a certain ratio and coupled the beam paths with the …
