Nuclear Fuel Cycle: Safe Management Of Spent Nuclear Fuel, Robert L. Sindelar

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

The aim for storage of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) either in wet or in dry storage systems is to ensure general safety objectives are met throughout a desired storage period. Staff at the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL), in collaborations with partners at other national laboratories, industry research organizations, and the University of South Carolina (UofSC), have performed materials aging testing and analyses, and have established nuclear materials aging management programs to support extended periods of safe storage of research reactor (RR) SNF and of commercial power reactor (PR) SNF pending ultimate disposal. Several example challenges include susceptibility of aluminum …

Since the discovery of electron-wave duality, electron scattering instrumentation has developed into a powerful array of techniques for revealing the atomic structure of matter. Beyond detecting local lattice variations in equilibrium structures with the highest possible spatial resolution, recent research efforts have been directed towards the long sought-after dream of visualizing the dynamic evolution of matter in real-time. The atomic behavior at ultrafast timescales carries critical information on phase transition and chemical reaction dynamics, the coupling of electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom in materials and molecules, the correlation between structure, function and previously hidden metastable or nonequilibrium states of …

Recently, electrically conducting heterointerfaces between dissimilar band-insulators (such as lanthanum aluminate and strontium titanate) have attracted considerable research interest. Charge transport has been thoroughly explored and fundamental aspects of conduction firmly established. Perhaps surprisingly, similar insights into conceptually much simpler conducting homointerfaces, such as the domain walls that separate regions of different orientations of electrical polarisation within the same ferroelectric band-insulator, are not nearly so well-developed. Addressing this disparity, we herein report magnetoresistance in approximately conical 180° charged domain walls, which occur in partially switched ferroelectric thin film single crystal lithium niobate. This system is ideal for such measurements: firstly, …

Time-Varying Resonant Mass At Collider And Beam Dump Experiments, Jinhui Guo, Yuxuan He, Jia Liu, Xiao-Ping Wang, Ke-Pan Xie

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

A new particle usually manifests itself as a single resonant peak located at its mass. We propose if the new particle mass is time-varying due to environmental effects, then its mass spectrum typically has a novel double-peak feature. A representative model is the kinetic mixing dark photon interacting with an ultralight complex scalar dark matter charged under U(1)'. We reanalyze the existing experiments, showing the constraints on such a model are drastically weakened than those on the traditional single-peak resonance model, due to the reduction of the luminosity exposure in each resonant mass bin. Consequently, for mass around tens …

First Search For Exclusive Diphoton Production At High Mass With Tagged Protons In Proton-Proton Collisions At √S =13 Tev, A. Tumasyan

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

A search for exclusive two-photon production via photon exchange in proton-proton collisions, pp → pγγp with intact protons, is presented. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 9.4 fb−1 collected in 2016 using the CMS and TOTEM detectors at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeVat the LHC. Events are selected with a diphoton invariant mass above 350 GeVand with both protons intact in the final state, to reduce backgrounds from strong interactions. The events of interest are those where the invariant mass and rapidity calculated from the momentum losses of the forward-moving protons match the mass and rapidity …

Topological photonics seeks to control the behaviour of the light through the design of protected topological modes in photonic structures. While this approach originated from studying the behaviour of electrons in solid-state materials, it has since blossomed into a field that is at the very forefront of the search for new topological types of matter. This can have real implications for future technologies by harnessing the robustness of topological photonics for applications in photonics devices. This roadmap surveys some of the main emerging areas of research within topological photonics, with a special attention to questions in fundamental science, which photonics …

Induced Spin Textures At 3D Transition Metal–Topological Insulator Interfaces, Slimane Laref, Sumit Ghosh, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal, Aurelien Manchon

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

While some of the most elegant applications of topological insulators, such as the quantum anomalous Hall effect, require the preservation of Dirac surface states in the presence of time-reversal symmetry breaking, other phenomena such as spin-charge conversion rather rely on the ability for these surface states to imprint their spin texture on adjacent magnetic layers. In this Rapid Communication, we investigate the spin-momentum locking of the surface states of a wide range of monolayer transition metals (3d-TM) deposited on top of Bi2Se3 topological insulators using first-principles calculations. We find an anticorrelation between the magnetic moment …

A Multi-City Urban Atmospheric Greenhouse Gas Measurement Data Synthesis, Logan E. Mitchell, John C. Lin, Lucy R. Hutyra, David R. Bowling, Ronald C. Cohen, Kenneth J. Davis, Elizabeth Digangi, Riley M. Duren, Andrew Rice, Multiple Additional Authors

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Urban regions emit a large fraction of anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) such as carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) that contribute to modern-day climate change. As such, a growing number of urban policymakers and stakeholders are adopting emission reduction targets and implementing policies to reach those targets. Over the past two decades research teams have established urban GHG monitoring networks to determine how much, where, and why a particular city emits GHGs, and to track changes in emissions over time. Coordination among these efforts has been limited, restricting the scope of analyses and insights. Here we present a …

Superfluid Spin Transistor, Edward Schwartz, Bo Li, Alexey Kovalev Jun 2022

Superfluid Spin Transistor, Edward Schwartz, Bo Li, Alexey Kovalev

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

We propose to use the Hall response of topological defects, such as merons and antimerons, to spin currents in two-dimensional magnetic insulator with in-plane anisotropy for identification of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition in a transistorlike geometry. Our numerical results relying on a combination of Monte Carlo and spin dynamics simulations show transition from spin superfluidity to conventional spin transport, accompanied by the universal jump of the spin stiffness and exponential growth of the transverse vorticity current. We propose a superfluid spin transistor in which the spin and vorticity currents are modulated by changes in density of free topological defects, e.g., …

Complex Energies And The Lambert W Function, A Das, B.G. Sidharth, K. Roberts, Sree Ram Valluri

Physics and Astronomy Publications

We apply the Lambert W function in the context of complex energy values in statistical systems of fermions and bosons. We derive the condition for the transformation connecting fermions and bosons. We discuss the physical significance of these results and investigate the conditions under which bosonization effects take place. The fermion and boson statistical and structural distributions discussed in this work suggest the possibility of their extensions to generalized Planck distributions.

Using the NOvA neutrino detectors, a broad search has been performed for any signal coincident with 28 gravitational wave events detected by the LIGO/Virgo Collaboration between September 2015 and July 2019. For all of these events, NOvA is sensitive to possible arrival of neutrinos and cosmic rays of GeV and higher energies. For five (seven) events in the NOvA Far (Near) Detector, timely public alerts from the LIGO/Virgo Collaboration allowed recording of MeV-scale events. No signal candidates were found.

First-Order Phase Transition And Fate Of False Vacuum Remnants, Kiyoharu Kawana, Philip Lu, Ke-Pan Xie Jun 2022

First-Order Phase Transition And Fate Of False Vacuum Remnants, Kiyoharu Kawana, Philip Lu, Ke-Pan Xie

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

False vacuum remnants in first-order phase transitions in the early Universe can form compact objects which may constitute dark matter. Such remnants form because particles develop large mass gaps between the two phases and become trapped in the old phase. We focus on remnants generated in a class of models with trapped dark sector particles, trace their development, and determine their ultimate fate. Depending on model and phase transition parameters, the evolutionary endpoint of these remnants can be primordial black holes, Fermi-balls, Q-balls, or thermal balls, and they all have the potential to constitute some portion or the whole of …

Hybrid Modulated-Phase-Grating For Phase Contrast X-Ray For A Varying Fringe Period Clinical Interferometry System, Elizabeth Jeong Park

LSU Master's Theses

Phase contrast x-rays are of use due to the range of imaging they can provide. Not only are they useful for attenuation they also can provide phase and small angle scatter X-ray (SAXS) information simultaneously which adds additional contrast and information to the original attention image. In prior work, a phase contrast system with Modulated Phase Grating was shown to eliminate the need for analyzer in standard Talbot Lau Xray Interferometers (TLXI). The system is clinically compatible in footprint due to its length being limited to

Isolated neutron stars that are asymmetric with respect to their spin axis are possible sources of detectable continuous gravitational waves. This paper presents a fully coherent search for such signals from eighteen pulsars in data from LIGO and Virgo's third observing run (O3). For known pulsars, efficient and sensitive matched-filter searches can be carried out if one assumes the gravitational radiation is phase-locked to the electromagnetic emission. In the search presented here, we relax this assumption and allow both the frequency and the time derivative of the frequency of the gravitational waves to vary in a small range around those …

Accident Simulation Study For Nuclear Power Plants Impacting Louisiana, Michael D. Mcmahon

LSU Master's Theses

INTRODUCTION: Louisiana has aligned its radiological emergency program with the 2017 Environmental Protection Agency Protective Action Guides Manual, but has added a child thyroid dose evacuation threshold in lieu of distributing Potassium Iodide to the public. The nuclear power plants will continue to align with the 1992 manual for the foreseeable future, so that under some accident scenarios the state recommendations will differ from those of the utility.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to predict what accident and weather conditions will lead to a differing set of recommendations.

METHODS: More than 1000 simulations were performed of low-filtration nuclear …

Operational Theories As Structural Realism, Emily Adlam Jun 2022

Operational Theories As Structural Realism, Emily Adlam

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We undertake a reconstruction of the epistemic significance of research on operational theories in quantum foundations. We suggest that the space of operational theories is analogous to the space of possible worlds employed in the possible world semantics for modal logic, so research of this sort can be understood as probing modal structure. Thus we argue that operational axiomatisations of quantum mechanics may be interpreted as a novel form of structural realism; we discuss the consequences of this interpretation for the philosophy of structural realism and the future of operational theories.

Shadows Of A Schwarzschild Black Hole Surrounded By A Spherically Symmetric Dark Matter, Ahmad Ibrahim Jun 2022

Shadows Of A Schwarzschild Black Hole Surrounded By A Spherically Symmetric Dark Matter, Ahmad Ibrahim

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, using general relativity, the null geodesics and black hole shadow of a spherically symmetric configuration of a black hole (surrounded by a dark matter shell) are studied. First, the standard

results of the photon sphere of Schwarzschild de-Sitter black hole is revisited and analyzed more carefully. Secondly, using an ansatz (piecewise metric function) commonly used in the literature to describe the mass distribution of the spherically symmetric black hole - dark matter configuration, the null geodesics through vacuum and dark matter are analyzed. Assuming an observer located at a finite distance from the black hole outside the …

Four-Field Hamiltonian Fluid Closures Of The One-Dimensional Vlasov-Poisson Equation, C. Chandre, Bradley Allan Shadwick Jun 2022

Four-Field Hamiltonian Fluid Closures Of The One-Dimensional Vlasov-Poisson Equation, C. Chandre, Bradley Allan Shadwick

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

We consider a reduced dynamics for the first four fluid moments of the one-dimensional Vlasov-Poisson equation, namely, the fluid density, fluid velocity, pressure and heat flux. This dynamics depends on an equation of state to close the system. This equation of state (closure) connects the fifth order moment—related to the kurtosis in velocity of the Vlasov distribution—with the first four moments. By solving the Jacobi identity, we derive an equation of state which ensures that the resulting reduced fluid model is Hamiltonian. We show that this Hamiltonian closure allows symmetric homogeneous equilibria of the reduced fluid model to be stable.

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Resonant tunneling is a quantum-mechanical effect in which electron transport is controlled by the discrete energy levels within a quantum-well (QW) structure. A ferroelectric resonant tunneling diode (RTD) exploits the switchable electric polarization state of the QW barrier to tune the device resistance. Here, the discovery of robust room-temperature ferroelectric-modulated resonant tunneling and negative differential resistance (NDR) behaviors in all-perovskite-oxide BaTiO3/SrRuO3/BaTiO3 QW structures is reported. The resonant current amplitude and voltage are tunable by the switchable polarization of the BaTiO3 ferroelectric with the NDR ratio modulated by ≈3 orders of magnitude and an OFF/ON …

Mos Compatible Deposited Materials For Optical Interconnects, Simone Iadanza

Theses

The recent years' exponential growth of data transmission in datacom and telecom technology (such as in Wavelength Division Multiplexing - WDM) has highlighted the energy consumption challenges of electronics, shifting research and industry interest towards optical interconnects. Novel and more efficient integrated photonics is being given the objective to face the ever-increasing demand for speed and bandwidth. This has initiated, in both industrial and academic environments, a quest for low-power, compact and cost-effective optical interconnects that can be integrated on electronic boards of Datacentres and transceivers all over the world. In this thesis, different types of WDM compatible Hybrid External …

"Examining Continent-Scale Variation In Aerial Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi Communities Using Edna, Raechel Hearth

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi form an important symbiosis with plants that make these fungi critical for plant health and ecosystem functioning. Although previous studies have shown that AM fungi disperse through the air, few studies have examined which environmental factors may be impacting their dispersal and aerial community composition, especially at large geographical scales. The goal of this study was to determine which environmental factors influenced air-dispersed AM fungal species composition across five different research sites in the Midwest and Western regions of the United States. By collecting dust at three different heights in the air, using modified Wilson and …

Symmetry And Control In Thermodynamics, Emily Adlam, L. Uribarri, N. Allen Jun 2022

Symmetry And Control In Thermodynamics, Emily Adlam, L. Uribarri, N. Allen

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We explore the relationship between symmetry and entropy, distinguishing between symmetries of state and dynamical symmetries, and in the context of quantum thermodynamics between symmetries of pure and mixed states. Ultimately, we will argue that symmetry in thermodynamics is best understood as a means of control within the control theory paradigm, and we will describe an interesting technological application of symmetry-based control in the context of a quantum coherence capacitor. Symmetry, the concept from which Noether derived the conservation laws of physics, is one of the most important guiding principles of modern physics. Moreover, symmetry is often regarded as a …

Physics - All Scholarship

In this work, we investigate whether stiffening in compression is a feature of single cells and whether the intracellular polymer networks that comprise the cytoskeleton (all of which stiffen with increasing shear strain) stiffen or soften when subjected to compressive strains. We find that individual cells, such as fibroblasts, stiffen at physiologically relevant compressive strains, but genetic ablation of vimentin diminishes this effect. Further, we show that unlike networks of purified F-actin or microtubules, which soften in compression, vimentin intermediate filament networks stiffen in both compression and extension, and we present a theoretical model to explain this response based on …
