P-39 Interdisciplinary Diffusion Lab, Sable Canales, Chloe Gaban, Mickey Kutzner

Celebration of Research and Creative Scholarship

Diffusion is a principle in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. The rate of diffusion is affected by temperature, particle size, concentration, and material type. Students can model the rate of diffusion based on particle size by contrasting blue and yellow dyes. Two petri dishes containing agar-agar receive a drop of dye at the center. The radius of expansion is recorded over time. The variance of the distribution grows as 2=4, where 2 is the variance, D is the diffusion constant, and t is time. Graphing variance versus time gives a slope of 4D. Diffusion constants vary by particle size, allowing for …

Targeted Search For The Kinematic Dipole Of The Gravitational-Wave Background, Adrian Ka-Wai Chung, Alexander C. Jenkins, Joseph D. Romano, Mairi Sakellariadou

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

There is growing interest in using current and future gravitational-wave interferometers to search for anisotropies in the gravitational-wave background. One guaranteed anisotropic signal is the kinematic dipole induced by our peculiar motion with respect to the cosmic rest frame, as measured in other full-sky observables such as the cosmic microwave background. Our prior knowledge of the amplitude and direction of this dipole is not explicitly accounted for in existing searches by LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA but could provide crucial information to help disentangle the sources which contribute to the gravitational-wave background. Here, we develop a targeted search pipeline which uses this prior knowledge …

Controlling Electro-Magnetic Functionality Of Ruthenates By Heterostructure Design, Zeeshan Ali Oct 2022

Controlling Electro-Magnetic Functionality Of Ruthenates By Heterostructure Design, Zeeshan Ali

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Perovskite oxides (ABO3) show wide range of functionalities originating from interplay of structural, spin, charge, and orbital degrees of freedoms. The bulk perovskite structure could be controlled via conventional chemical substitution, though exploiting heterostructure engineering novel ground states could be observed which otherwise are absent in bulk. In this thesis, the interest is to explore the electro-magnetic phenomena as complex oxides are confined in heterostructures.

I first investigate electromagnetic properties of ultrathin epitaxial ruthenate: SrRuO3 (SRO); spatially confined between SrTiO3 (STO) i.e., STO5-SROn-STO5 with n = 1- and 2-unit cells. It …

We report the effect of remote surface optical (RSO) phonon scattering on carrier mobility in monolayer graphene gated by ferroelectric oxide. We fabricate monolayer graphene transistors back-gated by epitaxial (001) Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 films, with field effect mobility up to 23,000 cm2 V−1 s−1 achieved. Switching ferroelectric polarization induces nonvolatile modulation of resistance and quantum Hall effect in graphene at low temperatures. Ellipsometry spectroscopy studies reveal four pairs of optical phonon modes in Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3, from which we extract RSO phonon frequencies. The temperature dependence of resistivity in graphene can be well accounted for …

Ultrafast Electron Diffraction From Transiently Aligned Asymmetric Top Molecules: Rotational Dynamics And Structure Retrieval, Kyle Wilkin, Yanwei Xiong, Haoran Zhao, Sri Bhavya Muvva, S. K. Saha, Martin Centurion

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) from aligned molecules in the gas phase has successfully retrieved structures of both linear and symmetric top molecules. Alignment of asymmetric tops has been recorded with UED but no structural information was retrieved. We present here the extraction of two-dimensional structural information from simple transformations of experimental diffraction patterns of aligned molecules as a proof-of-principle for the recovery of the full structure. We align 4-fluorobenzotrifluoride with a linearly polarized laser and show that we can distinguish between atomic pairs with equal distances that are parallel and perpendicular to the aligned axis. We additionally show with numerical …

Investigating D-Dimensional Behavior Of The Mixed Condensate In Qcd, Jason N.E. Ho, Tong Mu

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

In the context of QCD sum-rules, hadronic properties are related to QCD correlation functions of composite operators. These QCD correlation functions are evaluated using an operator product expansion, where the non-perturbative contributions to the correlation function are parameterized by local nonzero vacuum expectation values multiplied by perturbatively-calculated Wilson coefficients. We present here an updated calculation of the Wilson coefficient of the mixed QCD condensate calculated in d-dimentions up to $O(m^3)$ in quark mass.

Liquid argon time projection chamber detector technology provides high spatial and calorimetric resolutions on the charged particles traversing liquid argon. As a result, the technology has been used in a number of recent neutrino experiments, and is the technology of choice for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). In order to perform high precision measurements of neutrinos in the detector, final state particles need to be effectively identified, and their energy accurately reconstructed. This article proposes an algorithm based on a convolutional neural network to perform the classification of energy deposits and reconstructed particles as track-like or arising from electromagetic …

Two Roads To Retrocausality, Emily Adlam Oct 2022

Two Roads To Retrocausality, Emily Adlam

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

In recent years the quantum foundations community has seen increasing interest in the possibility of using retrocausality as a route to rejecting the conclusions of Bell’s theorem and restoring locality to quantum physics. On the other hand, it has also been argued that accepting nonlocality leads to a form of retrocausality. In this article we seek to elucidate the relationship between retrocausality and locality. We begin by providing a brief schema of the various ways in which violations of Bell’s inequalities might lead us to consider some form of retrocausality. We then consider some possible motivations for using retrocausality to …

Coherent Enhancement Of Optical Remission In Diffusive Media, Nicholas Bender, Arthur Goetschy, Chia Wei Hsu, Hasan Yılmaz, Pablo Jara Palacios, Alexey Yamilov, Hui Cao

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Remitted waves are used for sensing and imaging in diverse diffusive media from the Earth's crust to the human brain. Separating the source and detector increases the penetration depth of light, but the signal strength decreases rapidly, leading to a poor signal-to-noise ratio. Here, we show, experimentally and numerically, that wavefront shaping a laser beam incident on a diffusive sample enables an enhancement of remission by an order of magnitude at depths of up to 10 transport mean free paths. We develop a theoretical model which predicts the maximal remission enhancement. Our analysis reveals a significant improvement in the sensitivity …

Faculty Publications

The adsorption of helium on charged hexabenzocoronene (Hbc, C42H18), a planar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecule of D6h symmetry, is investigated by a combination of high-resolution mass spectrometry and classical and quantum computational methods. The ion abundance of HenHbc+ complexes versus size n features prominent local anomalies at n = 14, 38, 68, 82, and a weak one at 26, indicating that for these “magic” sizes the helium evaporation energies are relatively large. Surprisingly, mass spectra of anionic HenHbc– complexes feature a different set of anomalies, namely at …

Measurements Of The Associated Production Of A W Boson And A Charm Quark In Proton–Proton Collisions At √S = 8tev, A. Tumasyan

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Measurements of the associated production of a W boson and a charm (c) quark in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV are reported. The analysis uses a data sample corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb−1 collected by the CMS detector at the LHC. The W bosons are identified through their leptonic decays to an electron or a muon, and a neutrino. Charm quark jets are selected using distinctive signatures of charm hadron decays. The product of the cross section and branching fraction σ(pp → W + c + X)β(W → ℓν), where ℓ …

Measurements Of The Higgs Boson Production Cross Section And Couplings In The W Boson Pair Decay Channel In Proton-Proton Collisions At √S = 13tev, A. Tumasyan

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Production cross sections of the standard model Higgs boson decaying to a pair of W bosons are measured in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The analysis targets Higgs bosons produced via gluon fusion, vector boson fusion, and in association with a W or Z boson. Candidate events are required to have at least two charged leptons and moderate missing transverse momentum, targeting events with at least one leptonically decaying W boson originating from the Higgs boson. Results are presented in the form of inclusive and differential cross sections in the simplified template cross section framework, as …

Tabletop Experiments For Quantum Gravity Are Also Tests Of The Interpretation Of Quantum Mechanics, Emily Adlam

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Recently there has been a great deal of interest in tabletop experiments intended to exhibit the quantum nature of gravity by demonstrating that it can induce entanglement. In order to evaluate these experiments, we must determine if there is any interesting class of possibilities that will be convincingly ruled out if it turns out that gravity can indeed induce entanglement. In particular, since one argument for the significance of these experiments rests on the claim that they demonstrate the existence of superpositions of spacetimes, it is important to keep in mind that different interpretations of quantum mechanics may make different …

Hydrogen Adsorption And Isotope Mixing On Copper-Functionalized Activated Carbons, C. M. Quine, Hillary L. Smith, C. C. Ahn, A. Hasse-Zamudio, D. A. Boyd, B. Fultz

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

High-specific surface area (SSA) carbons were functionalized with copper nanoclusters and evaluated as potential hydrogen storage materials. The adsorption and desorption behaviors of the copper-functionalized material and pristine high-SSA carbon are compared between 77 and 400 K using adsorption isotherms up to 10 MPa and by temperature-programmed desorption of isotopic hydrogen. The high-SSA activated carbon with copper nanoclusters exhibited two desorption behaviors. (1) A desorption peak at 120 K, which was associated with physisorption on carbon, and (2) a desorption peak at 310 K, which was associated with a chemisorption process involving copper. The desorption from copper was strongly dependent …

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

We have studied the galaxy-group cross-correlations in redshift space for the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) Survey. We use a set of mock GAMA galaxy and group catalogues to develop and test a novel ‘halo streaming’ model for redshift-space distortions. This treats 2-halo correlations via the streaming model, plus an empirical 1-halo term derived from the mocks, allowing accurate modelling into the non-linear regime. In order to probe the robustness of the growth rate inferred from redshift-space distortions, we divide galaxies by colour, and divide groups according to their total stellar mass, calibrated to total mass via gravitational lensing. We …

Role Of Draw Rate And Molecular Weight When Electrospun Nanofibers Are Post-Drawn With Residual Solvent, Adriano Conte, Xiao Hu, Vincent Beachley

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

The postdrawing process is poorly understood for polymer nanofibers due to the difficulty of manipulating nanofiber structures. Here, an angled track system facilitates postdrawing of individual nanofibers with control of parameters including molecular weight, draw rate, draw ratio, and solvent evaporation time. In this study, the effects of molecular weight, draw rate, and relative residual solvent content on final nanofiber properties are investigated. Molecular weight is first investigated to clarify any influence polymer chain length can have on drawing in facilitating or hindering chain extensibility. Polyacrylonitrile nanofibers with 50 and 150 kDa molecular weights behave similarly with postdrawing resulting in …

Impulse Measurement Methods For Pulsed Laser Ablation Propulsion, Ishaan Mishra, Scott Kirkpatrick Oct 2022

Impulse Measurement Methods For Pulsed Laser Ablation Propulsion, Ishaan Mishra, Scott Kirkpatrick

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Research Publications

Pulsed laser ablation propulsion has the potential to revolutionize space exploration by eliminating the requirement of a spacecraft to carry its propellant and power source as the high-power laser is situated off-board. More experimentation needs to be done to optimize this propulsion system and understand the mechanisms of thrust generation. There are many methods used to calculate the impulse imparted in pulsed laser ablation experiments. In this paper, key performance parameters are derived for some of the impulse measurement methods used in ablation propulsion experiments. Regimes discussed include the torsional pendulum system, simple pendulum system, and solid and liquid microspheres.

Computational fluid dynamics modeling was used to characterize the effect of the integration of constrictions defined by the vertices of hyperbolas on the flow structure in microfluidic serpentine channels. In the new topology, the Dean flows characteristic of the pressure-driven fluid motion along curved channels are combined with elongational flows and asymmetric longitudinal eddies that develop in the constriction region. The resulting complex flow structure is characterized by folding and stretching of the fluid volumes, which can promote enhanced mixing. Optimization of the geometrical parameters defining the constriction region allows for the development of an efficient micromixer topology that shows …

Physics and Astronomy Publications

We present the first systematic study of 50 low-redshift (0.66 < z < 1.63) iron low-ionization broad absorption-line quasars (FeLoBALQs) using SimBAL, which represents a more than five-fold increase in the number of FeLoBALQs with detailed absorption line spectral analyses. We found the outflows have a wide range of ionization parameters, − 4 ≲ log U ≲ 1.2 and densities, 2.8 ≲ log n ≲ 8 [ cm − 3 ] . The objects in our sample showed FeLoBAL gas located at a wide range of distances 0 ≲ log R ≲ 4.4 [pc], although we do not find any evidence for disk winds (with R ≪ 0.01 pc) in our sample. The outflow strength primarily depends on the outflow velocity with faster outflows found in quasars that are luminous or that have flat or redder spectral energy distributions. We found that ∼18% of the FeLoBALQs in the sample have the significantly powerful outflows needed for quasar feedback. Eight objects showed overlapping troughs in the spectra, and we identified eleven loitering outflow objects, a new class of FeLoBALQs that are characterized by low outflow velocities and high column density winds located log R ≲ 1 [pc] from the central engine. The FeLoBALs in loitering outflows objects do not show properties expected for radiatively driven winds, and these objects may represent a distinct population among FeLoBALQs. We discuss how the potential acceleration mechanisms and the origins of the FeLoBAL winds may differ for outflows at different locations in quasars.

Binding Of Alpha-Crystallin To Cortical And Nuclear Lens Lipid Membranes Derived From A Single Lens, Raju Timsina, Samantha Wellisch, Dieter Haemmerle, Laxman Mainali

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Several studies reported that α-crystallin concentrations in the eye lens cytoplasm decrease with a corresponding increase in membrane-bound α-crystallin with age and cataracts. The influence of the lipid and cholesterol composition difference between cortical membrane (CM) and nuclear membrane (NM) on α-crystallin binding to membranes is still unclear. This study uses the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spin-labeling method to investigate the α-crystallin binding to bovine CM and NM derived from the total lipids extracted from a single lens. Compared to CMs, NMs have a higher percentage of membrane surface occupied by α-crystallin and binding affinity, correlating with less mobility and …

Metal-To-Insulator Transition In An Anderson Insulator With Kondo Impurities, Weidong Zhang, Elliott R. Brown, Richard P. Mirin

We report a voltage-controlled critical behavior observed in a GaAs epitaxial structure containing a dense array of ErAs nanoparticles. When fabricated with metal electrodes, the structure displays a voltage- and temperature-dependent metal-to-insulator transition and strong hysteresis in the current versus voltage and versus temperature characteristics, with critical temperatures as high as 77 K. Furthermore, we observed a diverging rms deviation of the electrical conductance with respect to the critical bias voltage, which further supports the existence of a phase transition. The insulating phase is governed by Efros-Shklovskii variable range hopping, and the conductance reduces beyond instrument limits as the temperature …

Contact Process With Simultaneous Spatial And Temporal Disorder, Xuecheng Ye, Thomas Vojta

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We study the absorbing-state phase transition in the one-dimensional contact process under the combined influence of spatial and temporal random disorders. We focus on situations in which the spatial and temporal disorders decouple. Couched in the language of epidemic spreading, this means that some spatial regions are, at all times, more favorable than others for infections, and some time periods are more favorable than others independent of spatial location. We employ a generalized Harris criterion to discuss the stability of the directed percolation universality class against such disorder. We then perform large-scale Monte Carlo simulations to analyze the critical behavior …
