Studies Of An Electrical Method For Generating Ultrasonic Waves, Yung-Yien Huang Jan 1964

Studies Of An Electrical Method For Generating Ultrasonic Waves, Yung-Yien Huang

Masters Theses

“Ultrasonic waves have proved very valuable in the observation of both the velocity and the absorption coefficient of sound in various media. From the velocity measurements of ultrasonic waves in metals, it is possible to obtain elastic constants, such as the compressibility, and the specific heat. Also, the observed attenuation depends greatly on the type and structure of the material. One of the widely used methods for investigation of the internal losses in solid state physics is the pulse-echo technique. This method is being used almost exclusively in internal friction investigation"--Introduction, page 1.

Longitudinal Spin Relaxation Of Optically Excited Rubidium., John Robert Martin Jan 1964

Longitudinal Spin Relaxation Of Optically Excited Rubidium., John Robert Martin

Masters Theses

"This thesis is intended to be a guide to the theory and experimental procedures of optical pumping in one of its most usual applications. It is also intended to be an extension of the work done here by Steinbruegge1 in 1963 along with several significant changes and improvements in experimental techniques. A study is made of the optical pumping of rubidium vapor, and results are given stating the most efficient methods with which to produce large populations of optically oriented rubidium atoms, and thereby determine the relaxation properties of a given rubidium system"-- Abstract, p. ii

Transverse Spin Relaxation Of Optically Pumped Rubidium., Robert Evans Hufft Jan 1964

Transverse Spin Relaxation Of Optically Pumped Rubidium., Robert Evans Hufft

Masters Theses

The study of the transverse spin relaxation of rubidium vapor is a continuation of the work done by Kenneth Steinbruegge1 and that in progress by John Martin2 at the University of Missouri at Rolla. The purpose of the experiment is to study the change of intensity of the transmitted pumping light at resonance in the longitudinal direction, and the observation of the high frequency modulation of a second "cross" beam of light perpendicular to the first. Under resonant conditions this "cross" beam will exhibit a phase coherence and a loss of phase coherence when parameters of the experiment …

The Dielectric Properties Of Thallium Nitrate., Gene E. Gowins Jan 1964

The Dielectric Properties Of Thallium Nitrate., Gene E. Gowins

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this research was to investigate the dielectric behavior of thallous nitrate and to determine whether it belongs to space group Pbnm or to Pbn2.

The growing of single crystals of thallous nitrate which are suitable for dielectric measurements is difficult because the crystals are prone to initiate a dendritic growth habit. In the present work single crystals of thallous nitrate were obtained, however, by slow evaporation of an aqueous solution at 55 degrees centigrade. The crystals were plates, not larger than 8 x 8 x 2 mm, whose principal faces were subsequently indentifled as (001) planes. The …

A Study Of The Effect Of The Crystal Orientation On The Internal Friction Of Magnesium Single Crystals., Robert Ray Nothdurft Jan 1964

A Study Of The Effect Of The Crystal Orientation On The Internal Friction Of Magnesium Single Crystals., Robert Ray Nothdurft

Masters Theses

"The method of growing, etching, and cutting magnesium single crystals is described in some detail. Ten single crystals of magnesium of different orientations were prepared and studied. The internal friction and relative Young’s modulus were measured for each specimen as a function of applied stress on a quartz composite oscillator. The effect of the orientation on the strain amplitude independent decrement, the strain amplitude dependent decrement and the ratio of the strain amplitude dependent decrement to the relative Young's modulus is compared to the theory of the pinned dislocation model of Granato and Lücke"--Abstract, p. ii

Aging Of The Dielectric Properties Of Some Perovskite Ceramics, Hector Troche-Maldonado Jan 1964

Aging Of The Dielectric Properties Of Some Perovskite Ceramics, Hector Troche-Maldonado

Masters Theses

"The effect of aging upon the dielectric constant and the dissipation factor were investigated for a number of lead titanate zirconate ceramics of varying composition. The ceramics investigated have a perovskite type structure. The materials chosen all have tetragonal symmetry at room temperature but are close in composition to materials of rhombohedral symmetry.

Empirical relations were determined for each specimen giving the rate of aging of the dielectric constant (K) and loss factor in terms of the frequency (f) and the elapsed time (t). The range of frequency was l kcps to l mcps; the range of elapsed time was …

Floating Potential Curves, Charles Frederick Bender Jan 1964

Floating Potential Curves, Charles Frederick Bender

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

A new method for molecular calculations was applied to the hydrogen molecule ion. Energies were calculated at different internuclear separations and simple energy differences were found. The method used was an approximate one which included two basic approximations: the use of Gaussian wave functions and the one-center method. The one-center method gives a good approximation for the electronic energies but does not give near-atomic electron densities. The title "Floating Potential Curves" comes from the fact that the Gaussian wave functions give good potential curves over a restricted region, but these curves are not oriented correctly with respect to the minimum …

A New Determination Of The Homogeneous Nucleation Rate Of Water In Helium, Edward Francis Allard Jan 1964

A New Determination Of The Homogeneous Nucleation Rate Of Water In Helium, Edward Francis Allard

Doctoral Dissertations

"The object of this investigation is to apply the best known cloud chamber techniques to the study of condensation phenomena, directed mainly toward the development of a precise method for the determination of homogeneous nucleation rates. A secondary object is to investigate the properties of re-evaporation nuclei so that adequate precautions may be taken to eliminate their detrimental effect in the homogeneous nucleation experiments"--Statement of Problem, page 10.

On The Kirkwood Superposition Approximation, Russell V. Cochran Jr. Jan 1964

On The Kirkwood Superposition Approximation, Russell V. Cochran Jr.

Doctoral Dissertations

"When the Kirkwood superposition approximation for the triplet distribution function is used in the Born-Green equation for the pair distribution function of a liquid, the fourth virial coefficient is given incorrectly. In view of this, two suggestions for improving the approximation have been investigated. A suggestion, due to G.H.A. Cole, that better results could be obtained by using a second-order integro-differential equation of the Born-Green type with the superposition approximation used for both the triplet and quadruplet distribution functions has been investigated, and results for a hard-sphere model show that this method gives considerably less reliable results than those obtained …

Decay Of Intensity Of Certain Hg Lines In An Hg-Ar Discharge, Edward E. Stepp, Richard A. Anderson Oct 1963

Decay Of Intensity Of Certain Hg Lines In An Hg-Ar Discharge, Edward E. Stepp, Richard A. Anderson

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The afterglow of four mercury spectral lines was examined in a mercury-argon electric discharge. The 2537- Å line decays in a complex fashion with three definite modes of decay. The 4077-, 4358-, and 5461- Å lines exhibited an even more complicated decay. These lines exhibited an initial rapid decay followed by an increase in intensity. Finally the intensity of these lines went through two maxima before they decayed in intensity at a slow constant rate. The actual intensity behavior of the 2537- Å line was masked by the imprisonment of resonance radiation. It is postulated that the main processes governing …

Development Of A Two Channel Counter For Measurement Of Faraday Rotations, Donald R. Flach Aug 1963

Development Of A Two Channel Counter For Measurement Of Faraday Rotations, Donald R. Flach

Masters Theses

Chapter I

Introduction

The rotation of the plane of polarization of plane polarized light when it passes through a substance in a direction parallel to an applied magnetic field is known as the Faraday effect and was discovered by Michael Faraday in 1845.1 It was found by experimentation that the amount of rotation of the plane of polarization was represented by the equation:

Θ = VH1 cos A

where H = magnetic field in gauss, 1 = simple path length in centimeters, A is the angle between the magnetic field and the direction of the light, and V is …

Study Of Fission Neutron Spectra With High-Energy Activation Detectors, James A. Grundl Jun 1963

Study Of Fission Neutron Spectra With High-Energy Activation Detectors, James A. Grundl

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

The energy spectra of neutrons from the fission of U235, U233, and Pu239 have been studied with seven high-energy activation detectors covering the range 0.6 to 16 Mev. Interpretation is in terms of the Maxwellian spectral function E1/2 exp(-E/T). By means of a unique cavity arrangement within a moderator to obtain pure thermal-neutron-induced fission neutrons, the average energies of the three spectra are found to be in the ratios

U235: U233: Pu239= (1): (1.016+or-0.003): (1.039+or-0.003).

Differences between the normalized spectra are most pronounced at high energies as exemplified by the relative Pu239:U235 flux ratios 1.17+or-0.013 for 611 Mev.

Review Of The Physical Aspects Of Osmotic Pressure, Joseph F. Goffaux Jun 1963

Review Of The Physical Aspects Of Osmotic Pressure, Joseph F. Goffaux

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

It should be mentioned that this paper deals mostly with the work done by others and only a certain portion is original. The student wishes to state that he is presenting a thesis that would be considered theoretical and not empirical. The history of the work done in the field of osmotic pressure is treated at length and much of the theory used by the experimenters is derived. Many periodicals carry the papers written by the scientists of osmotic pressure and some of these men have spent perhaps fifteen of twenty years on their experiments.

A Transister Quenching Circuit For Geiger Counter Tubes, Andrew M. Simko Jun 1963

A Transister Quenching Circuit For Geiger Counter Tubes, Andrew M. Simko

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

This thesis attempt to provide a solution to a basic problem inherent in the operation of Geiger-Mueller counting tubes, that is, reduction of the insensitive time, or “dead time”, following the discharge. Many researchers, using various quenching gases for internal quenching and various vacuum tube circuits for external quenching, have succeeded in reducing the “dead time” significantly. Reduction of the insensitive time provides more efficient and accurate counting. The solutions presented in this thesis utilize transistor circuits instead of vacuum tube circuits for external quenching. In an extensive research of current literature, no attempts to transistorize a quenching circuit could …

This work describes an experimental study of the energetics of the fission of U238 performed with solid state detectors. The fissions were produced by fission-spectrum neutrons from a reactor. The procedure used for calibrating the detector response is described and the effects of some experimental uncertainties, such as pulse height defect and neutron emission, are discussed.

A Theoretical And "Experimental" Investigation Of One-Dimensional Molecular Distribution Functions, Samuel Blackman Jun 1963

A Theoretical And "Experimental" Investigation Of One-Dimensional Molecular Distribution Functions, Samuel Blackman

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

The presence of long range forces and of various types of boundary conditions may be expected to cause deviations from the well known Maxwell-Boltzmann velocity distribution, resulting in a spatially dependent velocity distribution. One possible method for obtaining a theoretical spatially dependent velocity distribution is to attempt an approximate solution for Liouville's equation. This is done in this thesis. The effects of a long range repulsive force inversely proportional to the interparticle separation as well as the effects of three types of wall boundary conditions upon the velocity distributions of a one-dimensional set of ordered particles have also been investigated …

A Radio Frequency Power Oscillator And Impedance Matching Device., Charles D. Preston Jun 1963

A Radio Frequency Power Oscillator And Impedance Matching Device., Charles D. Preston

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

Certain molecules, called “globular” molecules, when first solidified form what are called “plastic” crystals. They are called “globular” either because they may exhibit an approximate spherical symmetry about their center of structure or because they may be small enough or of such a shape as to appear spherically symmetric because of rotation. The first case might be exemplified by methane (CH4) which has the configuration of a regular tetrahedron. The second case might be exemplified by hydrogen chloride (HCL).

Transistorized Circuits For Telemetry, Dominick Misciascio Jr. Jun 1963

Transistorized Circuits For Telemetry, Dominick Misciascio Jr.

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

This thesis is concerned with the telemetry of small DC signals from photomultiplier tubes. The circuitry must have a high input impedance so as not to load down the photomultiplier tube and a low output impedance which is capable of controlling the current through a small incandescent bulb. This bulb is used to illuminate a photoresistor. The output of the circuit consists of a variation of the resistance of the photoresistor. This variable resistance is conventionally converted into a variable audio frequency which is transmitted to the receiving station on a radio-frequency carrier. The output resistance must be independent of …
